alralr the race is starting but im not gonna be able to watch it so im gonna spend the last 20 mins or whatevr i have on yapping abt the fmf design for max 🙏
first, this is explicitly for the northern kingdom soo like the first chapter when he was still living there, this is what he would've looked like. ofc after moving he had to adapt to verhoeven's dress code so !!
last time i yapped a lot abt material and worldbuilding, this time around i wanted to focus a lot more on the actual design and what it means.
so cloak colour change, bc the other one didn't really give what it was supposed to give and i was able to put a lot more meaning into this one. dark inky blue cloak, and a pop of orange somewhere unexpected. the idea is, in an animation sequence the cloak could be affected by the wind revealing the striking verstappen orange. this type of instance would ofc only happen in situations like high up on a podium giving a speech, fight sequences etc. spaces where the show of power from the royals r required, the patriotic orange also showcases specifically on max's character the entirety of his person that he hides behind a heavy coat for the sake of his kingdom.
briefly back to material for a moment but the fur lining the cloak is mixed in an effort to have affordable distribution of resources. the standard quota would be for royalty to have refine. materials while the civilians can get mixed but max insisted on his being just like the ones of the people. his guilt could never.
the undercloak is black, inky like a single brush stroke and it effectively obscures his figure underneath the heavy cloak on top. the whole outfit is an illusion. and it'll only become apparent once we look at his red-cheeked, ruddy young face.
the layers, the fur, the cloak that swishes around his rather thin legs all serve a purpose and it's to obscure his silhouette to make him seem more imposing than he actually is. this young verstappen is the one that harshly trained those trainees and made them men. and he was angry. the orange underneath the sea blue tells many stories and his boyish overgrown winter hair (people r dying there's no time for style) paired with his rosy cheeks tell us an even fuller one.
his hands r hidden beneath his cloak, his knives r tucked in his belt right next to where he rests his palms. sometimes he thinks that he can move the knife as if it were his own head. his whole silhouette looks like an arrow. he's a weapon first. sometimes he forgets where the blade ends and he starts.
hshsj soo those r my thoughts. if we ever get some sort of ficlet or flashback chapters maybe a prologue on max in his hometown then i suppose this design would be relevant lol. i think first establishing who he used to be is important to establish who he became, so even if it's irrelevant rn, the teenage-young adult design would be quintessential to his development as a human methinks.
i loveddd the softness of chapter 6 !! very cute i can't wait to see where it all goes ur writing's beautifulll mwah xx
AHHHHHH OH MY GOD. please know I'm going insane about all the little pieces of this. off my rocker, they're peeling me off of the walls.
his fluffy hair!! and the blush!! hiding behind all the fur I need to squish him.
I love the way you showcased his need to not be seen "above" his people. he uses the same materials they do, he lives in similar conditions. he heats his own water, he hunts for his own furs when necessary, he goes out to the villages to assist however he can. he's a member of the community before he's a verstappen, and that's what's earned him their fierce loyalty.
THE ORANGE I LOVE IT. I see your vision about it being an incredible visual cue, and I think it's also very inspiring, seeing how they don't have bright colors all that often. it makes max easily identifiable in a fight if he wants to be, either to draw attention away from others or serve as a rallying point.
max having to "hide" himself behind those layers, to present an image that's older, larger, more of a figurehead— you get it!!
always having his hands near his weapons, constantly being aware, all of that is an important part of max. survival can be v harsh up north, and when it comes down to survival of the fittest, then it's rightfully assumed that the leader is the most adapted to the environment.
I do actually have a prequel ficlet in the works for him! it'll probably be a tumblr exclusive thing for right now, but it's in progress :)
once again I am going feral about this it's BEAUTIFUL and I'm absolutely obsessed, you've done an absolutely incredible job 🤍🤍🤍

Celebrating July 4th in Strange Times, Pt 2
Of a Too-hot Kitchen, the Sauce, the Meatballs, and the Tater Sallid.
I got goin' as soon as I felt caffeinated, glad I did, as far as time required to get things done. Had to tell my self not to lose focus or get distracted a few times, and things are done, except the oven-roasting of the chicken thighs slathered with The Sauce, which can happen about 5pm. By 1pm kitchen was too hot, so cooling breaks of running back to my room for five-ten mins and back out ensued.
First things first today: Start The Sauce & The Tater Sallid.
for The Sauce:
1 lg yellow onion, finely sliced, and then minced...very finely chopped!
Start clarifying that in about 2 tblspns butter over medium heat. Sprinkle in a teaspoon of salt and about the same in coarse-ground pepper.
6 -8 large cloves of garlic, finely minced, thrown into the pot with the butter and onion mix. Stir and don't let burn. You want extremely clarified onion/garlic bits, speckled with black pepper.
Once you get there, dump in 16 oz tomato sauce, stir and mix thoroughly.
Now pour in 1/2 cup Grandma's Molasses, stir in.
Add in 1 cup Heinz ketchup, and 1/4 cup white vinegar, stir vigorously.
Stir in 1 heaping teaspoon of coarse-stone-ground mustard.
Now pour in 1 cup strong black coffee. Stir it in until you've got a mixture that's pulling together.
Now keep on the back burner to "cook down" until it is a thick, viscous and clingy goo. Perfect for stickin' to da chicken.
Now throw on the potatoes to boil: 4 or 5 lbs of either red potatoes or goldens. You want a waxier tater for this, rather than a gritty one like a russet. Yeah...boil them quickly, salted water to cover by at least a couple inches. Twenty -thirty minutes tops. Until the skins are cracking. Drain and allow to cool for about 20 minutes.
While that's happening, hard-boil 4-5 eggs, depending on what size they are. These were tiny mediums, so I'm using 5. Bring to a boil, cover, remove from heat and let sit for 15 minutes. Voila. Peel.
Meanwhile, chop one big-ass RED onion, and 3 or 4 garlic dill pickles.
Once the taters have cooled some, hold them with a hot-pad in your palm, and roughly chop them. You want them still MOSTLY hot, but cool enough you don't hurt yourself. It's that mid-point that will give you the texture/feel you want.
Now, pour and sprinkle 2 handfulls of the dill pickle juice over the taters. Add the red onion, pickles and a jar of diced pimientos, plus some of the juice as well. Put the eggs in and the use a knife to rough-chop them as they sit atop the rest of the ingredients.

Now, add 1 1/4-1 1/2 cup HELLMAN'S or BEST FOODS MAYO. Period.
Now stir. Keep stirring, as you are folding all the ingredients together.

That's about the halfway point. Keep goin'...what you're lookin' for is this:

Now, Cover tightly and fridge for the rest of the day, until dinnertime.
Now make The Meatballs (which are tasty dipped in The Sauce!):
Do as you did for The Sauce, the clarified onion/garlic mix. Set aside to cool
In a big bowl, pour the following:
2 cups Progresso Italian Breadcrumbs
1 cup grated parmesan
1/2 cup finely chopped parsley
Stir to mix.
Take a 2-cup Pyrex measure, and pour in 1 cup cold water.
Crack in 4 eggs...use a fork and break the eggs up, and distribute through the water. Pour into the bowl and stir into the dry ingredients. Add the onions and garlic (now cooled down.)
Crumble in a pound of ground beef and a pound of hot Italian Sausage. Now comes the fun part. Be four again and squish and squish until it all comes together as a solidly distributed mix.
Form into balls and bake at 350 for about a half hour and you get this:

Did I mention they're killer dipped in The Sauce?
lulz. OK. SO: Meatballs? Check! Sauce? Check! Tater Sallid? Check! It's about ten til four. I'm gonna shoot for a seven-seven-thirty eat time, so I'll start roasting the chicken about 5pm.
Which means I got an hour to CHILL in THE AC.
Will follow up with Pt 3 later.
Y'all chill.

2 min read NASA Reveals Prototype Telescope for Gravitational Wave Observatory NASA has revealed the first look at a full-scale prototype for six telescopes that will enable, in the next decade, the space-based detection of gravitational waves — ripples in space-time caused by merging black holes and other cosmic sources. On May 20, the full-scale Engineering Development Unit Telescope for the LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission, still in its shipping frame, was moved within a clean room at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. NASA/Dennis Henry The LISA (Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) mission is led by ESA (European Space Agency) in partnership with NASA to detect gravitational waves by using lasers to measure precise distances — down to picometers, or trillionths of a meter — between a trio of spacecraft distributed in a vast configuration larger than the Sun. Each side of the triangular array will measure nearly 1.6 million miles, or 2.5 million kilometers. “Twin telescopes aboard each spacecraft will both transmit and receive infrared laser beams to track their companions, and NASA is supplying all six of them to the LISA mission,” said Ryan DeRosa, a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “The prototype, called the Engineering Development Unit Telescope, will guide us as we work toward building the flight hardware.” The prototype LISA telescope undergoes post-delivery inspection in a darkened NASA Goddard clean room on May 20. The entire telescope is made from an amber-colored glass-ceramic that resists changes in shape over a wide temperature range, and the mirror’s surface is coated in gold. NASA/Dennis Henry The Engineering Development Unit Telescope, which was manufactured and assembled by L3Harris Technologies in Rochester, New York, arrived at Goddard in May. The primary mirror is coated in gold to better reflect the infrared lasers and to reduce heat loss from a surface exposed to cold space since the telescope will operate best when close to room temperature. The prototype is made entirely from an amber-colored glass-ceramic called Zerodur, manufactured by Schott in Mainz, Germany. The material is widely used for telescope mirrors and other applications requiring high precision because its shape changes very little over a wide range of temperatures. The LISA mission is slated to launch in the mid-2030s. Download additional images from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio By Francis ReddyNASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Scar, Survivors, and the Earth.
In the context of just recently (15 min ago) having finished Scar's final Secret Life Episode, and thinking about the "celestial" aspect that some people like to assign to the winners, Scar is, without a doubt, the Earth.
Let's go back to the beginning: - Scar fails his initial task. Grian, ever the Watcher enabler, allows him to re-roll, and allows people to help him with his task. - This never happens again. - His second task is still okay! He has to hype up Pearl, which he succeeds at. It's part of his marketing! Trader Scar's, the new and (mostly) honest plan. He will be better this season. He will make friends and it'll all be okay. - Again, this does not happen. - His next tasks are: take, ignore, hustle, corrupt, and destroy. It is obvious that Scar is not in the Watcher's favor. He broke the rules at the beginning, and he must prove himself to win. We've seen what happens to rulebreakers, but we've also seen what happens to winners: they never enjoy their win, and they always die. Scar breaks this last part. Everyone at the end of Secret Life is afraid, and ready for it to be over. There has been increasingly high tension in the past few sessions, and everyone knows that this is the final few hours. They will die, and many know that they are not the ones who will make it to the end. Weirdly enough, Scar does not fit into this. He doesn't think he'll win, sure, but he's not going to just give up! What would be the point in all the villainy if he gave up now? And so, in his words, he will blend in with everyone, not in any attempt to make friends, but just to survive a little longer.
The worst part about this is, that at the end, through the desperation of everyone else, Scar finally makes friends. He helps Joel and Bdubs. He works with Pearl after her original allies have died. Scott asks, betrayed, why Scar didn't join their group. Scar would have made friends if not for his tasks, which after Session 2, all required isolation. But in the end, at the final stand, Scar has more people on his side than he knows what to do with. He bounces between groups, unsure of where he should stick, or why he should stick anywhere at all. He is about survival. And that is why Scar wins.
Scar wins through a number of factors (Grian's TNT attack on Gem, Gem sacrificing herself for Scott, Pearl purposefully missing a few swings with her sword), but he wins. And, most importantly, after winning, he doesn't die. Standing in that ravine with the realization that he killed Pearl, that he won, he lets the zombie take him down to half a heart, but he lives. He towers up out of the ravine. He does not jump. He makes his way back to the Secret Keeper and says "I succeeded." Scar is the Earth in the way that he keeps going. Scar refuses, now, to lay down and die, to let these games keep ending with a final death. He is surprised that he's won, but he is satisfied that he felt it was fair, that he didn't take lives just for the sake of a win. He distributed them, helped others, wanted to make sure people knew that they were good at the game.
He says to Pearl, when she offers her life to him, "I genuinely don't want to win that much, to kill you for that." People see Scar as a liar, a hustler, and a betrayer - but in the end, Scar is, in a way, justice. He knows what it feels like to give up, and he's not doing that anymore. He refuses to win at the cost of others. He is the planet that supports life, the planet that gives and takes, and he is the ocean that supports and drowns and makes hurricanes and gentle waves. Scar is Earth, because behind the layers of the many facades, he helps. He will win, but not by bringing other people down. He is loyal, but not to a fault.
#gtws#secret life smp#secret life spoilers#trafficblr#deer blahs#god just. it KILLS me how he got down to half a heart. and then didn't die. I was just holding my breath waiting for it and it just didnt?#it never happened and that fucked with me a little bit#we all expected a final death#the last survivor always dies. obviously.#idk but. makes you think.

Emerging infectious agents: an unusual case of Metapneumovirus pneumonia in an adult patient by Graziana Francesca Greco in Journal of Clinical Case Reports Medical Images and Health Sciences
Abstract
Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), a relatively new virus, is a common cause of acute respiratory infection, especially common in the pediatric population. Despite hMPV infection in adults is possible, this rarely results in serious clinical manifestation. Here, we describe a hypoxemic respiratory failure related to pneumonia in an adult patient in whom hMPV was detected in respiratory samples.
Keywords
Human Metapneumovirus; SARS-CoV-2; Covid-19.
CASE HISTORY
A 61-yr-old caucasian man presented to the Emergency Department (ASST Mantua Hospital, Mantua, Italy) with fever up to 39°C, poorly responsive to antipyretics, nocturnal dyspnea and productive cough with mucus-purulent sputum for three days. On physical examination he appeared in good general condition, collaborating and oriented. The following parameters were recorded: blood pressure 140/90mmHg, heart rate of 100 beats min-1; respiratory rate of 23 breaths min-1; and body temperature of 38.4°C. His arterial oxygen saturation on room air was 87%. Chest examination revealed abnormal breath sounds with rhonchi and fine crackles in the middle lobe and inferior lobes bilaterally, no wheezes were heard. Laboratory findings revealed lymphocytosis (81000 x 103/µl), low platelet count (113000 x 106/µl) and an increase in alanine transaminase value (59 U/L), total bilirubin value (1.13 mg/dL) and CPR value (112 mg/L). Room air arterial blood gas analysis showed a normocapnic hypoxemia: pH 7.43, carbon dioxide tension 40.5 mmHg, oxygen tension 60.4 mmHg, and HCO3 24 mmol L-1. The SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection test on nasopharyngeal swab was negative. A chest radiograph showed multiple, small, patchy opacities in the right upper and middle lobe and no pleural effusion was observed. Based on these findings he was admitted to the Respiratory Department.
His medical history included chronic lymphocytic leukemia in follow-up which did not require any specific treatment. He denied taking any medications or to be a smoker, he drinks a glass of wine once a day and has no known allergies. The patient was a farmer who cultivates wheat and maize but he had no animal exposure and no travel history in the last few years. There is no family history or childhood history of respiratory complaints. He was vaccinated with three dosesagainst the SARS-CoV-2 infection (Pfizer) but not against the influenza virus.
Based on the patient’s presentation and testing results, on suspicion of bacterial pneumonia he was empirically treated with IV Piperacillin/Tazobactam, the patient required oxygen support at 3L min-1 and an inhalation therapy with Beclomethasone/Formoterol was set up ex adiuvantibus. In the following days, several microbiological investigations were carried out to determine the etiology of pneumonia: blood culture, urinoculture, sputum culture, Legionella, Haemofilus and Pneumococcus serologic tests, Legionella pneumophila and Pneumococcal urinary antigen test, all of which were negative.
A nasopharyngeal swab FilmArray Respiratory Panel Assay (NP FARP) was then requested: it was positive for human Metapneumovirus and the result was confirmed by repeating the test. For non responder fever and further increase of CPR (230 mg/l) and PCT (0.27 ng/ml), Levofloxacin and later Meropenem were added in the perspective of a resistant bacterial etiology. On the 6th hospitalization day a chest computed tomography (CT) scan was obtained (Figures 1 and 2) which demonstrated large opacities with gradient borders, distributed in the peribronchial area at the right upper lobe, middle lobe and both the lower lobes; they tended to the confluence configuring parenchymal consolidations with aerial bronchogram at the level of the cost-phrenic angle. Imaging also showed bilateral hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy (max diameter 3.4 x 2 cm), splenomegaly and absence of pleural effusion. Blood chemistry tests for HIV, Aspergillus antigen and galactomannan were also investigated but turned out negative. To rule out other infectious agents the patient underwent bronchoscopy with bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) into the middle lobe. BAL provides material for various microbiological and cytological tests: Gram stain, culture, Koch’s bacillus DNA, Galactomannan, Cytomegalovirus and P. Jirovecii and immunological analysis were negative. From respiratory virus panel on BAL only human Metapneumovirus was isolated, this unique microbiological data was according to the NP FARP’s result, thus supporting and confirming the new hypothesis of a viral pneumonia in an adult patient with probable secondary mild immunosuppression due to his hematological disease. About ten days after entering the ward, there was a gradual decrease of CPR and a progressive improvement in clinical conditions and respiratory function to allow the suspension of oxygen therapy. At the end of hospitalization, pulmonary function tests were performed and showed a restrictive syndrome (FEV1/FVC 76.2, TLC 68% and VC 79% of predicted) and mild reduction of diffusion capacity (DLCO 62% and KCO 99%), probably representing the residual functional impairment due to viral pneumonia. The patient finally suspended all therapies and at discharge was referred for a one-month follow-up visit.
DISCUSSION
Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), a relatively new virus first discovered in 2001, has been detected in 4-16% of patients with acute respiratory infections [1] [2] [3]. In particular, a recent review of 48 previous articles, including 100,151 patients under the age of five hospitalized for CAP, identified this virus as a cause of pneumonia in 3.9% of patients [4]. A recent study of 1386 hospitalized adult patients identified hMPV pneumonia in only 1.64%, indicating that it was much less common than in the infant population [5]. Metapneumovirus causes disease primarily in infants, but rarely can infect immunosuppressed individuals and elderly as well. Seroprevalence studies have shown that 90-100% of 5-10 years old children have previous infection [6]. Reinfection can occur during adulthood because of defected immunity acquired during the first contact with hMPV and/or because of different viral genotypes. The incubation period varies widely but is typically 3-5 days. The disease severity depends on the patient's condition and it ranges from mild upper airway infection to life-threatening pneumonia or bronchiolitis [7]. Clinically, Metapneumovirus infection is often indistinguishable from RSV infection, particularly in the pediatric population, and common symptoms include hypoxemia, cough, fever, upper and lower airway infections and wheezing [8]. hMPV infant patients are often hospitalized for bronchiolitis and pneumonia [9]. In young adults, a flu-like syndrome with fever may occur in a small number of instances, but infection in geriatric subjects may cause severe clinical manifestations such as pneumonia and, in rare cases, death [10].
As described in this case, it was not surprising that antibiotics and corticosteroids were administered in most patients infected with Metapneumovirus mainly for two reasons: in most cases the specific diagnostic tests for hMPV are not carried out at admission and/or physicians prefer to continue steroid and antibiotic treatment to control potential unidentified bacterial infections in patients in which no etiological agent had been identified associated with hMPV infection. The overuse of these drugs could therefore be reduced through the adoption at admission of specific diagnostic tests for such etiological agent, especially if specific risk factors are present (age, immunodepression, etc.). In addition, the adoption of such tests could reduce the nosocomial spread of this virus, allowing an early isolation of the infected patient [11].

Stockholm Wrap-Up: Tips and Tricks
My time in Stockholm has come to an end. I am now waiting for my co-op to begin! The past semester has been a wonderful 4 months that I will never forget.
I gathered a few tips and tricks for people planning to study abroad! I couldn’t find lots of information specific to Stockholm when I was searching for info, so I thought this could help future students.
Hope you enjoyed my TMI posts, and thank you again for reading/glancing/trying to read them until Tumblr told you to create an account!
The following notes are solely subjective to me so take them as suggestions, not facts!
Basics of Sweden
People:
Very reserved but nice when you ask something
Almost everyone speaks English
Places:
Everyone is entitled to their freedom to roam around - basically, you can go anywhere except for private property
Culture:
Fika = a break with coffee and pastry
Sweden seriously recycles! Make sure you follow all the rules and throw away the right stuff at the right place
Through the pant system, you can get money back from empty cans/bottles. ICA usually has the pant machines so make use of them and get your money back!
Transportation:
Information on Google Maps is accurate
People are generally silent in public places, including the streets
Public transportation (run by SL) is well-distributed and punctual in Stockholm
Metro comes every 5 minutes or so. It runs until late at night around 12 am or 2 am
High-speed trains are mostly free but if you go past a certain point you need to pay an extra fee, so ask the representative in the stations OR check the map OR check the SL app
Buses
Night buses run every day and are free with the SL card that DIS gives you
Trams
Ferries
To and from Arlanda airport:
Arlanda Express - high-speed train
18 mins + alpha to/from your house
Fastest to T-Centralen but a little expensive
Does not run throughout the night
~$16 one way
~$32 roundtrip
Flygbussarna - bus
40-50 mins total
Bus stations are distributed throughout Stockholm so you can get on and off at desired stops
Runs all throughout the night
~$15 one way (to/from Hornstull)
~$27 roundtrip (to/from Hornstull)
Money:
10 SEK is a little less than $1
Swedish crowns = Kroner = SEK
Almost all the stores are cashless - wireless tap or cards are the norms
ICA, The System (national alcohol stores), and flea markets are some of the only places that take cash
DIS program

Suggestions
Start learning the basics of Swedish through apps in advance! Duolingo was mainly how I learned Swedish
Hi = hej (hey)
Bye = hey då (hey do)
Thank you = tack (tac)
Thank you so much = tack så mycket (tac-so-micket)
Sorry = förlåt (fur-lat)
Excuse me = ursäkta (ooh-shak-ta)
Go out and explore the city whenever you can! Get that vitamin D
Traveling:
Main airlines:
Ryanair: cheapest flights that are good for weekend trips with a backpack. It can be strict with the backpack size so ensure that your bag fits the size requirements. You need to buy every little thing you can think of, even water
I heard Easyjet is similar to Ryanair
SAS youth: high-quality service with a cheaper price if you are between 12-25 years old. The seats run out very quickly so book in advance!
If flights get delayed for 3+ hours, SAS provides monetary compensation (a lot more than you think) so check it out if your flight gets delayed or canceled
Norwegian: I personally didn’t fly Norwegian but I heard good things about it
KLM: usually expensive
If traveling with friends, an app called Tricount is very useful to sort out all the money stuff. You can enter who paid how much for every single occasion and at the end of the trip, it gives you a suggestion on who should pay how much to whom
What To Bring:
Bring a wide range of clothing - you will experience all four seasons during your one semester in Stockholm!
Winter suits: thick jackets, gloves, scarfs, hats
Swimsuits: Don’t forget to bring swimsuits for sauna/polar plunging in Stockholm and beaches during your academic/personal travels!
Fanny pack: it was very useful when I was traveling to places known for pickpocketing (London, Barcelona, Italy, etc.)
Travel-size bottles!
Many Airbnbs and hostels did not have shampoo/conditioner, so I always carried around shampoo and conditioner in mini-containers (under 100 mL). They are useful for skin care products too!
International Travel Adapter
Plug types are all different in Sweden, United Kingdom, Malta, Italy, France
Check before you travel!
Hygiene product information for girls
The tampons that they sell here are very small
I didn’t see any stores selling big pads, so I’d bring enough for an entire semester
What Not To Bring:
Toiletries were surprisingly very cheap in Stockholm: cotton pads, toothbrushes, floss, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, etc. No need to bring them if you don’t have enough room!
Normal was my go-to store for these products
Where To Study:
Espresso House - the most popular chain in Stockholm imo
Wifi, charging stations
Good smoothies (mango chia is my fav) and pastries (cheesecakes, croissants, Kanelbulle)
Wayne's - similar chain
Wifi, more charging stations
A lot of people chatting or studying
Illy - chain with chill studying vibes
Wifi can be a little goofy sometimes
Good studying atmosphere - everyone is working on a laptop
Avocado sandwich is good
Where To Go:
For grocery shopping/basic goods:
ICA: $600 gift card that DIS gave me lasted me the whole semester! I cooked and bought groceries with my roommate, so we technically had $1200 together for one semester
BUT I ate out a couple of times each month and traveled a lot so if this is not the case you might run out quickly!
Normal: they sell a lot of basic goods ranging from toiletries to stationery to snacks. It is not too expensive either so if you want something small but don’t know where to go, I’d check out Normal after ICA!
IKEA: We went just for fun and sometimes for food. Cheap Swedish meatballs and 70-cent vanilla ice cream make the visit worth it!
Go thrifting - there are lots of options! Many thrift stores are located side-by-side in Slussen, T-Centralen, and Mariatorget. Keep in mind that there are some vintage stores, but they are generally expensive (average $40). Read the descriptions of each store below if you are interested. This list of thrift stores is in ascending order by price:
Myrona & Humana: both are chains that sell clothes on the cheaper side. I loved to look around the wide selection even if I had nothing to buy in mind
Artikel2: the one I went to was huge - there were lots of jean products
Stockholm Stadsmission: a chain with reasonable price and quality. You can find lots of gems when you spend time digging!
Arkivet: a higher-end second-hand store with abundant high-quality clothes such as Tommy Hilfiger, COACH, BOSS, COS, etc. The one in T-Centralen is my personal favorite! I suggest this store if you’re looking for durable clothes like trench coats, jackets, etc. The expensive clothes are much cheaper than the original price, but the clothes that are usually cheap (ZARA/H&M) are a bit overpriced
Check out museums - the following list is in descending order of preference:
Paradox Museum: plenty of photo spots! I’d suggest going with someone else so that you can take photos of each other
Tekniska Museet: a lot of science and technology stuff, but it’s not boring - it is a multistory building with innumerable interactive activities. Don’t forget to check out the video game rooms on the top floor!
Banksy (pop-up): Banksy’s artwork illustrates the political and historical issues through Banksy’s perspective
Fotografiska: exhibitions switch every few months: I loved Rinko Kawauchi’s photo collection!
Skansen: open-air museum with reindeer and historical housings! It is hugeeee so spare some time if planning on going here
Vasa Museum: museum with a well-preserved 17th-century ship that got salvaged
ABBA Museum: The museum is smaller than I expected, especially when it is on the more expensive side. However, there were a few interactive activities (dancing stage, karaoke stations, silent headphone dancing spot, etc.) and numerous photo spots!
For people who love nightlife - check out the following list:
Cafe Opera: nightclub
Secret Garden: gay bar in Gamla Stan
Liffey: Irish pub in Gamla Stan that has live music and karaoke
RoQ: bar with arcade games
Beer and play: casual drinking bar - a lot of DIS students went on Tuesdays to drink beer and socialize
Avoid Time bar: the $15 cocktails are good but there are too many old men who approach young girls :((
Wander around in…
Gamla Stan: I can’t emphasize my love for Gamla Stan enough; as the old town, they have a lot of historical buildings and museums in addition to rows of souvenir stores and cafes. There are a myriad of small paths (+ the narrowest street in Sweden) you could take - I loved getting lost in Gamla Stan!
Fika and Wine - good authentic Swedish food: meatballs are very good
PANEM - my absolute favorite dessert cafe! The mango mousse cake is one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted
Monteliusvägen: This is a perfect spot in Mariatorget to enjoy a view of the city while you take a leisurely walk. I went there multiple times with friends and on my own. It's the perfect place to have your sunlight intake!
Rosendals Trädgård (Garden): Although it’s a bit far away from the center of Stockholm (on an island that also has Skansen and Grona Lund amusement park), it is a place you need to visit in the spring. Little stores sell postcards (I was about to buy 5 but I realized I’m broke and only bought 1; however, I am regretting my choice right now. If I could go back I would buy all of the ones I picked out), keyrings (I bought four acorn keyrings for my family), vases, etc. There are greenhouse-looking cafes where you can eat food and desserts. And don’t forget to smell and take pictures at the flower gardens!
Kungsträdgården: ice skating in winter and cherry blossom festival in spring!
More places to visit in Sweden:
City hall
Stockholm Public Library
Gröna Lund = amusement park
Westfield Scandinavia = mall
Stockholm Observatory
Archipelago
Östermalms Saluhall = food hall
Day trip to Uppsala
What To Eat:
Burger
MAX - Swedish burger chain
More popular than McDonalds!
There are a ton of vegan/vegetarian options - and I heard they are good
Sweet potato fries are gas
Brödernas - Hamburger restaurant
Right next to the DIS Stockholm building
Outdoor sitting is a must in spring!
Top sweet potato fries
Pasta
Florentine - Italian pasta/pizza place
The pasta here is sooooo good
Cocktails are fabulous too: Florentine on the Beach is my favorite
Carls Deli - Italian restaurant
After eating their pasta I agreed with the 4.8-star rating on Google Maps
In a food hall in T-Centralen
Very busy all the time!
Japanese:
Noburu - best sushi for reasonable prices
Near DIS Building (about 10 minute walk)
DELICIOUS food and AESTHETIC plating
Dry ice for decor 0_0
IPIN - cheap and good Japanese food
Near Hornstull
Everything was around $10
Ramen, sushi, and donburi were all good!
Sushi Yama - a chain where you can select nigiri types
Nigiris are small but delicious
You can choose quantity and type of nigiri - I recommend grilled salmon; it literally melts in your mouth
Matchaya - ramen and bubble tea
Close to DIS (about 15 minute walk)
Good ramen (I suggest the miso base)
Love their fruit bubble tea
TooGoodToGo - you can get leftover food that would’ve gone to waste at the end of the day for cheap prices!
Happy Sweet Potato - bubble tea
I got 3 different bubble teas on top of a cup full of coconut jellies + pudding for less than $8
It sells out rapidly so I’d set a timer and snatch the deal when it opens
ICA - groceries OR fruits and veggies OR bread
I only ordered bread here but I’ve noticed that the other options run out fast
Got a bag for less than $5 if I remember correctly
Good for students who need sandwich bread + want pastries like croissants and vanilla/chocolate bread
Bakery Hornstull - bread OR cake
I love the owner couple… They’re so sweet and kind
I got 4 paper bags filled with all sorts of bread - there were a lot of big bread/sandwich bread though
When I bought a cake for approximately $7, she let me choose between two cakes (we usually don’t get to pick)
Eataly - pizza
My friends did it here and got three pieces of pizza for $3
I missed my chance but you could do it!
Desserts
PANEM - pastries (!!! Mango mousse cake !!!)
PLEASE try the mango mousse cake if you like not TOO sweet fruity desserts
Alcohol
You can only purchase alcohol from The System, which is owned by the government - US ID like driver’s license works sometimes
Briska pear cider is extremely popular for a reason
All the ciders I tasted in Sweden were good but I especially liked Somersby ciders
This is all I can think of!
The four months in Stockholm reminded me what life really is, what I enjoy, what I am comfortable with, what I need to work on, and how I want to live my life.
I am so grateful for all the opportunities and support I have received. Now, it is time for me to move on and enter a new stage in life. I’ll be looking back on these precious memories whenever I need a refresher :)
I genuinely loved studying abroad, especially in Stockholm. I hope you had fun reading these weekly posts as well!
Thank you and goodbye,

So I've made a post about this before but.
In generation 4 pokemon, if you had a copy of pokemon ranger or one of the sequels, you could connect to the internet and download a special mission which rewards you with a manaphy egg. You can then send that egg to a copy of diamond/pearl/platinum and hatch it, and that was the only legal way of obtaining manaphy. This egg was intended to be shiny locked (aka it was supposed to be impossible for the manaphy to be shiny.) However, due to a coding error in the shiny lock, this isn't exactly the case.
This manaphy CAN be shiny, but is widely considered one of the most difficult shiny hunts to take on. Firstly, each individual cartridge of pokemon ranger only contained ONE egg. Once it's been redeemed, that cartridge can never distribute an egg again. So just finding a copy with the egg in tact is a goat rope. Second, to access the special mission to get the egg, you have to have access to an online even that ended over a decade ago (there is a known dns exploit to access old online events, but using that requires specific hardware, like an old out of date internet modem that uses WEP keys)
So. You've gotten an egg (four eggs is optimal, though) and are ready to hunt this thing. Not so fast!! Manaphy can never be shiny on the game the egg was sent to from pokemon ranger. This is the shiny lock working (somewhat) as intended. The manaphy's stats are all determined when the egg is received by a copy of dppt. You can reset and hatch the egg as many times as you want, and it's nature, stats, and ID number will not change.
Now, shinies in these games are determined using a formula that takes into account the trainer ID of the save file and the ID number of the individual pokemon. The way the shiny lock works is it prevents the manaphy's ID from producing a shiny when used in this formula with the trainer ID of the file it is hatched on. However, this only applies to the trainer ID of the file that redeemed the egg originally. If the eggs are redeemed from ranger, then traded to a different copy of dppt, the shiny lock does not account for the new trainer ID - and the same egg that isn't shiny on one game can thus be shiny on a different game.
So what this shiny hunt becomes is less a hunt for a pokemon ID that will be shiny, and more a hunt for a trainer ID that allows the egg to be shiny. The egg's ID number will never change - which means to find a shiny manaphy, you have to change the other variable in the formula used to calculate shininess. You have to change the trainer ID.
So. You redeem the eggs from ranger, and knowing they will never be shiny on this first game, you immediately trade them to a different copy of dppt. You hatch them. If they're not shiny, then you have reset so the eggs are back to being un-hatched. Then take a copy of dppt the eggs are not currently on and play far enough to unlock trading (fastest in diamond/pearl, aprox. 20 mins) catch fodder to trade for the eggs, and then send the eggs to this new save file. Hatch them, and if there's no shiny, repeat the process.
Over and over, until you get a shiny.
Anyway. All this to say uuhh

I got it

The biggest problem with trains and trams is that they don't always go to where you need to go.
What this does is require the use of a secondary means of transport (bus), and sometimes even tertiary (walking, bicycle, scooter, taxi).
This complicates the journey in comparison to a car. For a journey across my city, I can
walk 10 paces to my car,
drive the full journey, park within 50 paces of my destination and
walk those 50 paces.
3 steps. 45 minutes.
But by train or tram it is:
Walk 100 paces to the bus stop.
Wait for 10 minutes (or longer depending on the service) outside in -25C. Get bus. Remember that bus doesn't accept cards, only exact change, and some buses require pre-bought tickets from a corner store. 20 minute bus ride to train/tram (because it doesn't go direct)
Buy another ticket. Wait 5 minutes in -25C
Get train/tram. Ride 40 minutes.
Get off, walk to bus stop. Get ANOTHER TICKET. Wait for 10 minutes in -25C
Bus ride 5 mins.
Walk to destination - could be as much as 15 minutes inside a city. Outside a city you're out of luck.
7 steps! 1hr 25m
It's a lot of work, a lot more time for very little saving.
Even the CO2 saved is negligible at best and actually detrimental at worst (if the trains/trams/buses aren't working at full passenger capacity).
Instead of spending literally billions of dollars on single track rail lines (each!), why don't we spend that money upgrading gas stations to accept and distribute hydrogen so that cars can be modified to run on H2. The only emission from a hydrogen car is water.

Automated Flash Point Analyzers in Petroleum Quality Control
The flash point of a petroleum product—the lowest temperature at which vapors above the liquid ignite in the presence of an ignition source—is a critical safety and quality parameter. Traditionally, determining flash point relied on manual Pensky-Martens or Cleveland open cup methods, which are labor-intensive, subject to operator variability, and require significant warm-up times. Over the past decade, however, automated flash point analyzers have revolutionized routine quality control in refineries, laboratories, and distribution facilities.

Principle of Operation
Automated flash point analyzers typically use a closed-cup configuration, conforming to ASTM D93 standards. A small sample is placed in a sealed cup equipped with a temperature sensor and drugged stirrer. Heating is precisely controlled via a programmable microprocessor, raising the sample temperature at a uniform rate (often 1–6 °C/min). At defined intervals (for example every 1 °C rise), a miniature electric ignition source is introduced into the vapor space. The instrument’s optical sensor then detects the appearance of a flame or “flash”—automatically recording the corresponding temperature. Because the cup is closed, volatile compounds remain contained, improving repeatability and safety.
Key Features and Benefits
Automation and Reproducibility
Compared to manual methods, the automated process minimizes human error. Programmable routines ensure consistent heating rates, stir speeds, and ignition intervals, leading to repeatability within ±0.5 °C. The analyzer’s microprocessor logs all test parameters and results, creating an audit trail in digital or printed form.
Safety Enhancements
Closed-cup systems contain hazardous vapors, reducing operator exposure and risk of accidental fires. Many units feature built-in safety interlocks, flammable vapor detectors, and emergency ram dump functions that rapidly seal the sample cup in case of volatility anomalies.
Faster Throughput
Modern analyzers can complete a flash point determination in as little as 5–10 minutes per sample—up to 50 % faster than manual methods. Instruments often offer “quick test” modes, which use an accelerated heat rate and wider ignition intervals for preliminary screening, followed by a confirmatory detailed run if needed.
Compliance and Reporting
Instruments are designed to meet ASTM D93, ISO 2719, and IP 34 standards. Built-in software can generate customizable reports, flag out-of-spec results, and interface with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) via Ethernet or USB. This seamless connectivity streamlines data management within modern petroleum laboratories.
Applications
Fuel production and storage: Ensuring gasoline, kerosene, and diesel meet flash point specifications for safe handling and transport.
Marine and aviation fuels: Verifying stringent flash point requirements (e.g., jet fuel minimum flash point 38 °C) to comply with international regulations.
Lubricants and specialty oils: Evaluating base stocks and additives to guarantee consistent performance under varying thermal conditions.
Maintenance and Calibration
Automated analyzers require periodic maintenance to ensure sensor accuracy and mechanical reliability. Routine checks include verification of the temperature probe (using certified calibration baths), inspection of the ignition electrodes, and replacement of seals and O-rings. Many manufacturers provide auto-calibration kits or service contracts to maintain compliance.
Future Developments
Emerging technologies integrate rapid infrared heating and non-contact optical detection, further reducing test times and maintenance burdens. Coupled with AI-driven diagnostics, next-generation flash point analyzers will predict maintenance needs, self-optimize test parameters based on sample type, and offer cloud-based data analytics for global quality assurance networks.
Automated flash point analyzers exemplify how advanced instrumentation enhances safety, accuracy, and efficiency in petroleum testing—critical for both regulatory compliance and operational excellence.

Ductile Iron vs Steel Pipe: Comprehensive Comparison of Strength, Cost & Corrosion Resistance
When selecting the right material for pipelines, engineers and project managers frequently weigh the advantages of ductile iron and steel pipes. Both materials are widely used in water systems, gas transmission, industrial infrastructure, and municipal projects—but which one performs better?
This in-depth comparison will explore mechanical strength, cost efficiency, corrosion resistance, installation factors, and typical applications, helping you make an informed decision for your next project.
1. What Is Ductile Iron Pipe?
Ductile iron pipe (DIP) is a type of cast iron pipe enhanced by adding nodular graphite, giving it greater tensile strength and ductility. It is commonly used in:
Water distribution systems
Sewage and wastewater pipelines
Fire protection systems
Key properties:
High tensile and yield strength
Excellent impact resistance
Long service life (typically 50–100 years)
Commonly lined with cement mortar or epoxy
2. What Is Steel Pipe?
Steel pipes are fabricated from carbon steel or stainless steel and are known for their high tensile strength, versatility, and widespread industrial use.
Steel pipe categories:
Carbon steel pipes – Common in oil & gas, construction
Stainless steel pipes – Preferred for chemical resistance and food-grade use
Key properties:
High tensile strength and elasticity
Customizable through welding and fittings
Available in seamless or welded types
Suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure applications
3. Strength Comparison: Ductile Iron vs Steel Pipe
PropertyDuctile Iron PipeSteel PipeTensile Strength60,000 psi (min)60,000–100,000+ psiYield Strength42,000 psi (min)35,000–70,000 psiFlexibilityModerateHighImpact ResistanceHighModerate to HighBurst PressureHigher in bell-spigot systemsHigh in welded or flanged systems
Conclusion: Steel has a higher strength-to-weight ratio and better elasticity, but ductile iron offers superior impact resistance and is more forgiving in buried conditions.
4. Corrosion Resistance: Which Lasts Longer?
Corrosion is a primary concern for any buried or submerged piping system.
Ductile Iron:
Vulnerable to external soil corrosion
Typically protected with zinc coatings, bitumen, or polyethylene encasement
Internally lined with cement mortar for water systems
Steel Pipe:
Prone to both internal and external corrosion if not properly treated
Protection includes galvanizing, epoxy coatings, or cathodic protection
Stainless steel variants offer excellent corrosion resistance but at a higher cost
Conclusion: With proper coatings, both can perform well. For long-term buried service, ductile iron with polyethylene encasement has proven highly reliable.
5. Cost Comparison: Material, Installation & Maintenance
Cost FactorDuctile Iron PipeSteel PipeMaterial CostLower (especially for water use)Higher (especially stainless steel)InstallationEasier with push-on jointsMay require welding or threadingMaintenanceLow with coatingsHigher due to corrosion risksLifespan50–100 years25–70 years (depending on environment)
