We won't expect all of them in every resume, but we expect a good many of these words on the resume/CV of a reasonable candidate.

although it may come as a shock based on the content of my blog i am in fact a functional adult with a full time job in stem who is somehow entrusted to manage other humans.
and i have something very important i would like to express to any of my college-ish followers who may be entering the full time workforce soon.
think of the resume you submit when you apply for a new job as a fic you just opened on ao3. you see a wall of text, you zone out. you can't process any of it. you back out of the fic and find something you can make sense of.
the lesson is: please please please for the love of god do not apply for a job with a resume that's more than three pages long MAXIMUM. i can tell you from experience literally no one is reading all of that and all it does is make it harder to understand your actual skills and experience.
#honestly two pages is even better#and use keywords from the job posting in case you're applying somewhere that runs resumes through AI first#this is speaking from experience with other hiring managers too not just my personal preferences#nobody has time for that even if they wanted to read it all#and it does NOTHING to convince me you have good communication skills when you can't efficiently prioritize and organize your experience#which is like the number one thing i'm looking for beyond the actual technical expertise#this message brought to you by the 35 ten page resumes in my inbox this morning

The issue with applying for jobs while still employed is that after you work all day the last thing you want to do is apply for jobs. But also appplying for jobs before a shift is annoying cuz it drains the energy you save for work. And then you go “oh ill just apply on my day off” but that day off comes around and you open linkedin and it feels like this

What game were you playing?
It's called The Roottrees are Dead.
You're a geneologist who is contacted after a devastating crash kills several members of this billionaire family called The Roottrees. A mysterious person gives you a huge list of names and asks you to complete a family tree, with a particular emphasis on blood relatives.
You have a basic 1998-era computer with a search engine, library access, and a periodicals database, and you have to figure out what to search and how to link clues to form a family tree.
This is an example of the notes I was keeping the first little bit of the game. You can see how webby it gets. You have to search anything mentioned- companies, books, movies, magazines, they all lead to more information. Hell, the co-stars in shows and movies lead to other connections on the family tree.

#a good example is that one of the names you're given is like lauren roottree#and you find out by searching her that she's an author#so you swap to the library tab and search all of her books under both last names#and find a special edition of one book that has a photo of her you inventory#and then it mentions her father was this one roottree#and on page 6 of random excerpts she mentions 'uncle jr'#so you know one of her uncles names has a 'jr' in it and you can look at the master list of names#and find a roottree with 'jr' in it#but you also have to know on the family tree where he fits in age order among the 5 kids of that generation#certain other names and keywords lead you to a book about the history of candy#and an ad for it from the 1930s where they say the 5 flavors were inspired by the 5 children#each sharing an initial with the kids#you use those first letters to narrow down the list further and get them in age order#or you have this dude having an affair with this girl#but he has 4 ex wives#so you see a mention of later in his life#his daughter#and by her last name you know like on the family tree there is only one wife with 2 children and so that must be the affair girl#because the girls have her last name#and you have to find names; professions; and photos for all of them; with bonuses for finding their spouse names#so... yeah#it's really hard to stop once you've started#but I locked in 18 entries on the family tree- i expect another handful to lock in very soon#so i made a list of keywords to search off of when i resume playing#ask

during the pandemic i used to make resumes with fake names and email addresses to see which ones got more calls back and i kept doing it even after i had results
#which lwk conclusively proved that its better to have 1 resume that caters to ai with keywords and a lot of filler and a more simplistic 1#that is human. some businesses actually go through resumes but its better safe thn sorry i think#mine#but i lost both email accounts so i have no frame of reference for whatim meant to be doing.

#i love having a good resume#takes 99% of the work out of it#i dont even have to apply to jobs i have employers offering me the position outright#and im not even that qualified to work with kids#im like the most unqualified#i was like hell fucking yeah im interested in this position SIGN ME UP for 20 an hour hell fuckign yes#five days a week full time?? fuck yes i will#besties i cannot recommend making your resume according to ATS standards enough. most of you have incredible resumes and qualifications#but the employers simply cannot see it and youre being filtered out by the ai program they use#ik a lot of resume templates use double columns but DO NOT use columns. keep it simple. one column no extra colors or formatting.#and write DETAILED descriptions of everything you are responsible for. Make sure you use common key words that work for all jobs as well as#specialized keywords for any niche roles you want to go in to.#put whatever youre most confident in at the top.#like i am absolutely not qualified and i do not have work history (literally one job in my life) but simply bc my resume is made for ats#i get these emails ALL the time.
