Ohhh my God I just found out my headmate reblogged this almost two months ago (way before I even got into the french revolution lol) and now I'm giving him the BIGGEST side eye. Like no disrespect to the original artist, it's very good art, but I personally disagree. I honestly think that Robespierre didn't have to die in order to "preserve his dignity" or whatever. He was spiraling into hasty decisions that led to horrible outcomes because of paranoia and fear, but I KNOW he still had the best interests of the people of France at heart. That was his whole purpose, his whole reason for doing what he did. People are sooo quick to blame him for the dramatic rise in executions after the law of 22 prairial passed, but Robespirre was straight up GONE. He was absent from the public. Chilling in his room, probably having a prolonged mental breakdown. You can't pin this one on him. A lot of other things, sure, but not this. There were other solutions. Other options for helping him. Other than, you know, DEATH.

Honestly I feel like retirement, maybe to another country (with a little luck, he would realize foreigners aren't evil schemers out to get him) and a new special interest could have done him a world of good. But who knows.
