SPOILER WARNING!!!!!!
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷
.
From my account sotr_sunriseonthereaping on Instagram!
.
To anyone who thinks Lenore Dove is a redhead, she's described as having a hint of red in her hair, not red hair. Rachel Zegler was amazing as Lucy Gray but she wasn't Romani and while the Covey are loosely based on them, I think this is their chance to give an unknown Romanichal actress a chance and diversify the film with people who still face severe systemic racism until this day. Many Europeans who claim to be anti racist will have the most baffling racist opinions about them.
I will describe that a bit so,
Trigger warning! I'm going to share some sad facts and experiences with other people
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷
From the 1960s until 2012, Czech Romani women underwent force sterilisations. These people are untrusted, unwanted and cast out by the society, s*xualised at the same time and harassed. Everyone will give you a story of how a Romani person did something to them (as the famous comment I saw on YouTube: "They stole my bucket"). What do people expect them to do to survive when they cast them out? In some countries, they have good lives with racism and in some countries, they live in slums (Serbia). A Turkish guy I thankfully don't know anymore claimed that they shouldn't mix with the rest of us. Horrible, right? When the Romani culture is given the chance to be represented, Hollywood butchers the language and plays on stereotypes or they race-swap/whitewash characters (I'm looking at you, Scarlett Witch). It could help bringing Romani culture to others and maybe fight racism just a little
ˏˋ°•*⁀➷
Casting a Romani actress could also come with problems. More racism and also the Covey aren't Romani, they're loosely based on them. This is a good YouTube short about it: https://youtube.com/shorts/6TF--HdIPHY?si=MCWRGJTsT6c0xJEm (adding it to my bio)
Suzanne Collins is my queen but she had included a review from "The Times" for TBOSAS on her website using the SLUR. I don't know if it's still there

So my Nan died a few months ago, and she was the last of her siblings, so now me and my dad are on a hunt to find out wtf she did with her family’s (crystal) ball because we have no idea where that thing has gone.
But anyway thought you all might be interested and I’ll keep you updated with any progress.

Dikken stor woffa Roma folki 🖤
Hey everyone, I’m trying to find other Roma people to connect with. I’m Romanichal and living in the US. I recently lost my grandfather who passed the heritage on to me when my dad skipped out.
When my great grandfather and other tribe members settled in the US, eugenics laws sterilized and murdered a large number of people I still hold dear. Those who were left either assimilated or laid low. We moved around a lot before finally settling in the middle of absolutely nowhere, and now with him gone, I miss having a community, even a small one.
If it matters, I’m 27, female. I speak Anglo-Romani and casually read palms.
This tell all goes against my better judgement, but what is a Roma without their people?

had a really interesting morning at work that has made me think a lot about the discourse r.e. wuthering heights lol. i had a meeting with a student who is soon to be homeschooled, his parents, a liaison officer, and a representative from the traveller network (a group that supports GRT families in dealing with government stuff) - before the parents arrived, the rep advised us that the family were english gypsies, and wanted to be referred to as such. he made it very clear that there are distinct difference between the different groups within the umbrella term of the gypsy, roma, and traveller community (<- the official name for it), though his group represent all three. i can talk about those if anyone cares. they would have been offended if we had called them travellers, because they're not - they're romanichal english gypsies.
anyway, i know that in a lot of places, and to some groups, gypsy is definitely considered a slur, and that should be respected - but i do find it a bit weird that we automatically censor a term that an actual group identify themselves with - they are proud of it and it is the only label they use. i feel like we should probably be more culturally sensitive to this rather than just blanket banning the term.
#the meeting was amazing and we managed to set up loads of reading materials for while they are travelling#made it easier that i also come from some gypsy stock on my mother's side and we know some of the same romanichal families#anyway. yeah. thought for the day. can we not entirely demonise a word that a whole community use for a label

im gonna infodump about my romani hawkes and amells cus its my house
hawke kids are full romani, speak romani chib, and have romanipen whereas arielle is half romani, half scottish and is thoroughly a didicoy (she remains my self insert no matter how hard i try ✊😔)
the amells immigrated from rivain to kirkwall a few generations before leandra and revka's, and rivain is where they earned their wealth by breeding horses for orlesian chevaliers (strong and imposing but still beautiful enough for a noble to ride)
magic actually isnt common in the amell bloodline itself, its malcolm and hamish's (arielle's father; revka's husband) blood that is filled with magic
malcolm's roma heritage comes from his elf side actually, hes half ferelden dalish and his clan uses vardos instead of aravels, pulled by either strong halla or horses
malcom's father built a vardo as a wedding present for him and leandra. ehren and marcus were born in it and even when the family settled in lothering they still kept it and it was a common place for the kids to play in or have alone time. there were nature murals all on the inside and bethany especially loved studying them. the family thought that the vardo was destroyed during the blight when they escaped but a few years living in kirkwall ehren saw the vardo parked in the street and discovered that when the blight passed over lothering a family of elven refugees found it in good condition still and claimed it as their own, which ehren loved because it meant it was still alive and useful
ehren and isabela (and the other siblings sometimes) often speak to each other in romani chib, mostly gossip. ehren loves being able to actually speak the language she grew up learning but never used in public and for isabela, it brings comfort speaking in her first language
bethany's red scarf is one of her mother's dikhle that she often stole from her drawers to tie it on her head as a child. when she grew older and understood the significance of a dikhlo, she started wearing it as a neck scarf when leandra officially gave it to her, only wearing it on her head after she and sebastian married
ehren only calls carver chavo (it just means boy) and he haaaaates it lmao
#dragon age#romani#also vitsas#amells and hawkes are kalderash#isabela i hc as romanichal#and the dalish roma are welsh kale

S. Jacopo a Lupeta
