I started watching Ron Kamonohashi's forbidden deductions and this is my immediate reaction:

Toto: Ron’s conductor of light

In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Hound of the Baskervilles” Sherlock Holmes tells John Watson this :

"Really, Watson, you excel yourself," said Holmes, pushing back his chair and lighting a cigarette. "I am bound to say that in all the accounts which you have been so good as to give of my own small achievements you have habitually underrated your own abilities. It may be that you are not yourself luminous, but you are a conductor of light. Some people without possessing genius have a remarkable power of stimulating it. I confess, my dear fellow, that I am very much in your debt."

The canon Holmes reminds me of this when I watched the episode. This is practically an anime-only addition: when Ron’s mind is in tatters but as soon as he focuses on Toto, the fog in his mind clears up. He sees Toto slowly and suddenly everything is easier to follow.

It is the way Watari Wataru interprets Akira Amano’s manga by adding these scenes (touching each other without qualms) to make sure that the narrative makes more sense. Also the way Ron looks affectionately at his partner as if he’s done the most important fabulous thing in the world bc the case is much more comprehensible with Toto’s own way of seeing the case and in turn, Toto’s deep sadness and concern when it comes to his friend. They only see each other in spite of all the people around them.

It is this partnership that they didn’t know at first craved and then later achieved, which makes it so irresistible.

If you need something to fill the void Ron Kamonohashi has left, let me introduce you to Rinsho Hanzai Gakusha Himura Hideo no Suiri

It is my favourite J-Drama of all time since the first episode aired in 2016 and the first thing I thought after watching the first anime episode of KamoRon was how much the two remind me of each other!

Himura Hideo is a criminologist who is teaching criminology at a university in Kyoto. He is also a consultant for the Kyoto police department and helps them on various cases he also uses for his field work. What many people don't know about though, are the dark thoughts he sometimes has: He has multiple times stated to think about killing a person himself and it's very easy for him to think exactly like the criminal did, putting himself in their shoes.

Enter Arisugawa Arisu, a mystery writer. He is Himuras best boyfriend and usually accompanies Himura on his detective work. He very much sees himself as Himuras protector and constantly worries about Himuras thoughts of killing, thinking he is the only one that can keep him save. Arisu is an absolute sweetheart and cares deeply for the victims and to bring them justice. He gets very upset whenever they confront the murderer and is totally Himuras weak spot (so much so that even some criminals are aware of it).

Himura is very much Ron while Arisu is Toto. Himura often acts weird at crime scenes and Arisu usually has to keep an eye on him, remind him of his manners and to not smile or desotiate around the police. Himura even gets a Moriarty nemesis... And even Himuras hairstyle reminds me of Ron 😂

Arisu is very much the heart while Himura is the head. While Himura is the dark, kinda brooding detective, Arisu is his charming but often clueless sidekick. Arisu at one point even compares them directly to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. They just complete each other. They care very deeply about each other and have a wonderful strong bond, their chemistry is just great. They get mistaken as a couple multiple times and there is so much bromance, bickering and shippy moments that I think people who love RonToto will also love Himura and Arisu! I love them so so much, if you haven't noticed until this point. Dynamics ("Partners in Crimesolving") like theirs just make me weak~

Also, there is a cat!!!

If you really want to watch something similar to Kamonohashi Ron no Kindan Suiri, Rinsho Hanzai Gakusha Himura Hideo no Suiri (literally: Criminologist Himura Hideos Deductions, also known as Criminologist Himura and Mystery Writer Arisugawa) has your back and will definitely fill that urge! I love that they added this early on. I wonder what kind of tough love would Toto apply later. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Toto appears more confident in the anime than in the manga. He’s sure of himself now that his best friend/bf is rattled bc of his discovery.
