thoughts on the doctor who finale?
left me feeling a little cold, which is sad because there's a lot of interesting stuff in it - the doctor as a queer man trapped in a time loop based on a conservative podcaster's ideal world is patently a much more evocative premise for a season finale than what the same showrunner was doing back in the late aughts; it feels like a very pointed thesis statement for the show and more in line with what I like about RTD as a writer. I like the bait and switch of the "character trapped in fake universe realizes the world isn't quite right and breaks out of it" type plot where it turns out the villain is exploiting the inevitability of a universe breaking to other ends. I like that the villain is a weird eugenicist who's goal to revitalize her species is something the doctor is kind of tempted by; that feels spiky and like the thematically correct choice for this version of the show and the anxieties of the main characters. I like the set and creature design of the bone palace and the "fossils" a lot. etc etc. but also you can just tell it was originally a much tighter story that production issues hit hard (like "ending changed while season was already airing" hard), both in longer term ways (it's pretty obvious the story was originally about ruby before problems with the cast, and so attention is split between her and the character written to replace her this season in some pretty frustrating ways, like how the ending with bel and the baby wouldn't be that strange if applied to ruby, who's in a family that fosters) and in short term ways (the pick up filming is like, half the episode, and is a pretty rough and not especially elegiac send off for the characters...). Kind of a mess, but I also appreciate it in certain ways?

I actually think Dorian and Orym should fight more.
Remember when their slowly building tension over and entire episode (full of passive aggressive remarks and blame throwing) led to threats? And how after, Orym thanked Dorian for handing over the crown sadly because he knew Dorian would be mad at him? And Dorian couldn't even look at him because he was legitimately hurt, thinking Orym was disappointed in him for doing what he thought was right? That was peak.
The fact they went from that to their current closeness and trust is the best part of their entire dynamic. Their relationship was hard fought and still will be. They will fight for it because they respect and care for one another deeply, and their disagreements don't change that, only improve it.

Ok so I know that I barely post any of my own takes and shit but I gotta talk about this.
You can have multiple opinions about Doctor Who.
Like do I love Billie Piper? Yeah bitch certified fan I love her work. Was I excited to see her back? Yes I am but; Am I worried about this being the worst thing the show could do? Yes absolutely, really could just be a jingling of keys. Am I angry about the fact that Rose Tyler’s character (and multiple scenes in the finale let’s be real) has technically overshadowed POC characters unintentionally or not? Absolutely cause I also love Martha and the 15th Doctor and Belinda, etc. Do I think David Tennent needs to come back? I adore him but let the damn man rest after this, if they do decide to use him, cause YOU CAN CLEARLY GET THE OTHER DOCTORS ON BOARD (crept the ones who have said they don’t wish to be back. RIP lovelies sleep good go do other fantastic stuff so I can enjoy you outside this narrative)
Yeah I think some characters are not super super well written but I can still enjoy them. There are some concepts that I think sound cool on paper but executed I think are not great. I’m really trying to be optimistic about this that you know maybe it will be really great and we just don’t know what yet. I’m also trying to keep neutral yeah I am super excited about Billie Piper and the haunting of the narrative etc. but I also do think that there are points when you need to get something new in there. And you know what just saying this I understand that there are a couple plot points from the newer seasons where they reference things from old Doctor Who and love that there’s some of those things that are super super interesting but there’s other things where I just don’t give a shit or it doesn’t make sense as to why that character has come back or to why something has happened there’s absolutely no build up to it and there’s absolutely no reason for it. There are good ways for this to be done as well I mean we saw it with the whole Saxon plot line with the master returning and we also see it a little bit with River killing the Doctor though the execution in my mind is not fantastic. But is anything perfect? Hell no. And I like it that way. I enjoy it cause it’s not perfect and that can be said for many other things I like.
What I’m trying to say is there have been points throughout the show where I thought something was stupid or silly or I thought things were great really cool this is just the Way with Doctor Who. I just kind of feel a bit like weird? Cause I see a lot of negative opinions and a lot of positive opinions but not really any neutral opinions about it. It’s always been a fluctuating thing always will be and I’m just here to enjoy the ride the good, the bad, and the ugly.

one small but important perk of more widespread queer rep in media is that it's conclusively shown that gay people carrying each other bridal style is the fucking best

Weiss schnee my beloved
Her and ruby bonding about feeling isolated socially (Ruby’s social anxiety Weiss’s like chronically unsocialized) or about their relationships with not being raised by your dad or about being raised by their sisters or about relationships with alcoholics or about how every interaction with another person feels like it’s defined by your family (yang is famously very popular and also the actual peer of Ruby’s classmates so she’s always yangs younger sister and Weiss is basically branded by the Schnee dust company literally look at her)
Is something I want MORE THEN ANYTHING but I’ll never get it
Where are whiterose people, I don’t even ship them I just wanna see them bond but I’ll take it however I can get it

yeah
I feel like most yang haters consumed media that portrayed siblings in a very stereotypical way and is just pissed that yang isn’t like those stereotypical siblings
and is also mad that she isn’t the same girl she was before losing her arm to adam
The portrayal of sibling relationship dynamics (and family relationship dynamics in general) in media is very important to me. I'm of the belief that relationships need to be depicted with at least some degree of delicate realism to be believable, and unfortunately messy relationship dynamics are realistic. Ruby and Yang's relationship isn't a very conventional sibling dynamic - half-sisters, one of them had to essentially be a stand-in parent for the other most of the time after mom died and dad sort of emotionally bailed on them (Tai did his best for his girls, and clearly they don't resent him for it, but it's still evident that he just wasn't everything they needed him to be as their father) - and therefore because it doesn't fall into most people's standards for what a sibling relationship should look like, it is "wrong". But there is no such thing as a correct sibling dynamic, because every sibling dynamic is different. A lot of people have messy but loving relationships with their siblings.
Life and family are rarely perfect, and to judge a fictional relationship by a rigid, idealized standard of what a sibling bond should look like misses that entire point. Many people have sibling relationships that are complex, full of unspoken understandings, occasional resentments, fierce love, and everything in between. "Messy but loving" dynamics are, at least to me, the most realistic and relatable, which is why I personally prefer them in my media. And why I think Yang is a good sister, and Ruby and Yang have a great relationship.
Tumblr media
Also, I could literally talk forever about how people reacted to Yang's trauma. There's this stupid mass fandom reaction to trauma (nonexclusive to the RWBY fandom unfortunately) and the desire for it to be cute. "I wanna feel bad for her, but I want her to stop feeling bad for herself and just move on so I can mourn for her", "How dare she be traumatized, how am I supposed to romanticize this character's trauma if they keep having it". It's something people don't admit to because I doubt they realize it. They want trauma as an aesthetic. They want the potential tragedy and depth without any of the actual messy, uncomfortable psychological pain. I mean, Christ, look at all the fan art that was made for Yang during her angsty volume 4 period, and then all people did was complain afterwards when she wasn't magically over it after one volume.
People wanted Yang to snap back immediately so they could keep seeing her as a pun-making punchy blonde bimbo with no other character traits, and they were mad when her already alluded to trauma surfaced because it clashed with their initial idea of what Yang's character was. There are tons of other people who have said this better than me, but I stand by what I've said before - Yang is one of the most grossly misrepresented characters in this entire show.

Smut writing tip:
Describe everything. It's the rare instance where more is actually better. You don't have to, obviously, but if you want that added layer of imagery and to help your readers immerse themselves more effectively, then try doing this.
Sure, you can simply write that you undid his pants or shirt, but what if you describe the act itself? How inherently intimate and sensual it can be? Just undoing the buttons one by one and see them react to their skin being slowly exposed for you.
Or how he tugs at the waistband of your pants and gentle teases it, hooking a finger inside... you know what he wants and he doesn't shy away from showing it to you.
To me, this makes all the difference and can turn a good smut into a delicious one!
