Amethar Rocks the Unfallen. The king who was never supposed to wear the crown. The one who was supposed to die first and kept standing up. The father who survived his own daughter.

What a tragedy he is. They called him lucky because he cannot fall, no matter how hard others push him down. But is it luck? When you have to keep losing your loved ones? Is it luck when you have to keep marching on while your family falls one by one leaving you to lead a country that was never supposed to be yours to lead? Is it luck when you have to hold your daughter's dead body in your arms, knowing the one you called friend was the reason she is now no longer there?

There’s a version of the story in which Amethar is overjoyed to learn he has another daughter. A version where he could give her the family she never had and where he could make up for lost time. There’s a version where Ruby and Jet are thrilled to have another sister and teach her twin speak. There’s a version where he meets her for the first time and opens his arms wide, knowing she lost so much and intent on giving her as much as possible. He’d make up for missed birthdays and holidays, he’d boast about his three strong willed and beautiful daughters. He’d laugh at her jokes and the misadventures of Jet and Ruby and their older sister Saccharina. There’s a version of the story, but not one A Crown of Candy could ever tell.

By her very existence in the story she hurts people. Her place in the story springs from a wound too deep for happiness. It isn’t her fault. It isn’t a character flaw. It’s a machination of the storytelling and medium. A warm and happy family was waiting to invite her in, but the only way she appears in the story is if they’re no longer a warm and happy family capable of inviting her in. That’s so cruel. A terrible irony.

If I had a nickel for every time Lou played the rightful King of Candia whose history involves an affair in the Dairy Isles, I'd have 2 nickels.

Lou Wilson is such a good actor because between the unsleeping city and a crown of candy he went from a man with so much responsibility that loves his responsibility, it is his greatest pride and honor and wish to fulfill that responsibility, to a man with so much responsibility that doesn’t want it, q man who was forced into it and it weighs him down so much and there’s nothing more that he wants than to rescind that responsibility, but he still fulfill it to the best of his ability because regardless of his wants it is his duty, within a single season change Lou gave us complete opposite portrayals of men of duty and responsibility and yet played them both so well that I fully believe him on both fronts and feel to my core the emotional states of those men. Lou Wilson just hits it out of the park thematically every time.
