0161: Defenders #33
Cover Date: March 1976 On-Sale Date: December 16, 1975
We draw closer to the conclusion of the current tale, but we're not quite there yet. In fact, we'll see the re-introduction of a previous pain in the Defenders' collective rear-ends and the introduction of a brand new alien race. Hint, they're in it together!
The splash page was far too precious not to include the entire thing. How can one not love an angry baby deer staring ferociously into the Orb of Agamotto while the Defenders are unconscious on what appear to be operating tables. Nighthawk remains unbound and I think there's a clue in that. Let's read on and find out why Bambi is so angry.
The captions tell us that Bambi is angry because his allies have been duped. Who on Earth are Bambi's allies? He was rescued by the Hulk, wasn't he? Is Bambi who we think he is? I think not. Bambi is taking the reader through previous events that he really shouldn't know about.
We relive Nighthawk's capture. We get confirmation that Nighthawk's brain was surgically swapped with Chondu's.
We see Nighthawk/Chondu's encounter with the Hulk after he just rescued Bambi from the naughty hunters he had just brutally punished. We see Doc defeat Nighthawk/Chondu and the flashback ends. Bambi goes downstairs. Apparently he needs to have the expositional part of the flashback elsewhere in Doc's Sanctum Sanctorum. We see Doc figure out that Nighthawk isn't Nighthawk and then we see... something new.
The next caption very clumsily tells us that Doc put Chondu's mind in Bambi's body and Jack Norriss's mind in Nighthawk's body. I think this may have inspired that Futurama episode where Professor Farnsworth switched everyone's minds and had trouble getting people back where they belonged. And, did Doc save Bambi's mind somewhere? I hate to think that it was erased like a cheap cassette tape in the 1980s.
We go back to known event as the Defenders arrive at the Headmen headquarters and Ruby TueThursday blows up her head to knock them out. We even get a cool panel of Ruby using her head to transport the unconscious Hulk.
Bambi/Chondu realizes he needs to escape and warn his fellow teammates of this deception, but he can't. At least not at this moment.
Back at Head Headquarters, Gorilla Man puts funky helmets on our heroes. Shrunken Bones asks what they're for and he is told they'll subtly alter their minds so they're more agreeable to the Headmans' ideals. Then they'll let the Defenders go. Nighthawk/Jack Norriss nearly slips up and realizes he needs to be very clever about how to handle this. Unfortunately, Jack isn't the brightest bulb in the room.
Transitioning to a view of Central Park, we watch as a young couple take a canoe onto what is presumably the big lake in the park. After the woman assures her boyfriend they won't get mugged on the lake (this was NYC in the 70s after all) they are promptly attacked by red skinned reptilian things. We welcome the Ludberdites to the Marvel Universe. Although they haven't actually been named yet. After being pulled under, a very stereotypical saucer flies up from the river.
Oh look, we're back at Head Headquarters. Gorilla Man introduces Nighthawk/Jack, who he thinks is Chondu, to the latest Headman, Ruby. Nighthawk/Jack responds by telling her that most of her is attractive and she turns her giant ruby colored sphere-head into a giant pair of lips. Is Steve just bad at this sort of thing or is this a reflection of the era?
In the next panel, Gorilla Man makes a bad pun and asks who he thinks is Chondu how to best exploit their enemies.
Caught with his metaphorical pant's down, Nighthawk/Jack says some idiotic things and just as he's verbally beaten to crap by the Gorilla and Saggy Man, Ruby comes to his defense. She appears to like things in a lighter vein. Jack is smart enough to goad the other two into recounting the whole plan. Go Jack! Maybe your bulb just got a few more watts!
One by one, the members tell their stories. Gorilla man wants to control the world and make everything run with precision eliminating all chance. Shrunken Bones has no plan. He just laments that he discovered cellular shrinking a decade before Hank Pym but was left a saggy mess. Ruby wants everyone to have a features ruby globe in place of their current heads. Now Nighthawk/Jack needs to pretend he knows what's on Chondu's mind. He says he wants freedom for his mystic soul to roam wherever.
In an ironic twist, the actual Bambi/Condu gains his freedom by jumping out of a Sanctum window and is immediately captured by a Lubderite. He winds up in what appears to be the interior of their flying stereotype.
Back at Head Headquarters, the Defenders have awoken. Hulk is angry and needs to be restrained. Doc wants to know where Nighthawk's brain is. Ruby then grows some tentacles out of her head to attack Doc. Val attempts to help, but Ruby is a woman meaning Val gets sick trying to attack and Ruby disarms here. The Hulk realizes that his fists being bound aren't as big an obstacle he initially thought and punches so hard all of Head Headquarters is collapsing. Oops!
Doc has managed to shield everyone and realizes that peace isn't the answer in the case. Everyone starts fighting and Doc sends Nighthawk/Jack to retrieve real Nighthawk's brain. Nighthawk grabs it and flies away. Gorilla Man, thinking it's still Chondu believes he'll come to his senses. The fight continues. Doc laments that he doesn't approve of revenge as a motive to fight. Val asks him to make an exception and he does. Shrunken Bones is too scared to fight so Ruby coats everyone in pink ooze. The Headmen leave to plan futher.
We see Nighthawk/Jack flying with real Nighthawks head in dish (with the life preserving chemicals sloshing out the bowl) when he's kidnapped by the flying stereotype. Inside we see our new friends, the Ludberdites and their friend, Nebulon the Celestial Man. He's returned to once again be a pain the Defenders' collective behinds.
Good heavens, what could possibly happen next? This was definitely action-packed with enough smattering of exposition to move things along. Enough new elements were introduced that this arc may last longer than I originally thought.
Will Nighthawk get his brain back. Is there enough of that life preserving fluid left for Nighthawk's brain to survive long enough to What's up with Chondu? Is he stuck as Bambi. Is Bambi's brain leaping through animal heaven? So many questions!
I still think that the Defenders should have mopped the floor with the Headmen almost instantly. Ruby doesn't seem the type to be able to handle a Norse goddess, a gamma giant and a sorcerer supreme with some cotton candy colored ooze. It may not be consistent or all that plausible, but it's loads of fun. I really can't wait to read what happens next!

The Scholomance by Naomi Novik (2020-2022)
A Deadly Education is set at Scholomance, a school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death (for real) — until one girl, El, begins to unlock its many secrets. There are no teachers, no holidays, and no friendships, save strategic ones. Survival is more important than any letter grade, for the school won’t allow its students to leave until they graduate… or die! The rules are deceptively simple: Don’t walk the halls alone. And beware of the monsters who lurk everywhere. El is uniquely prepared for the school’s dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out millions. It would be easy enough for El to defeat the monsters that prowl the school. The problem? Her powerful dark magic might also kill all the other students.
Fablehaven by Brandon Mull (2006-2010)
For centuries, mystical creatures of all description were gathered to a hidden refuge called Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. The sanctuary is one of the last strongholds of true magic. Enchanting? Absolutely. Exciting? You bet. Safe? Well, actually, quite the opposite...
Kendra and her brother, Seth, have no idea their grandfather is the current caretaker of Fablehaven. Inside the gated woods, ancient laws keep order among greedy trolls, mischievous satyrs, plotting witches, spiteful imps, and jealous fairies. However, when the rules get broken, powerful forces of evil are unleashed, forcing Kendra and Seth to face the greatest challenge of their lives, to save their family, Fablehaven, and perhaps even the world.
Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan (2004-2011)
They have always scared him in the past--the Rangers, with their dark cloaksand shadowy ways. The villagers believe the Rangers practice magic that makes them invisible to ordinary people. And now 15-year-old Will, always small for his age, has been chosen as a Ranger's apprentice. What he doesn't yet realize is that the Rangers are the protectors of the kingdom. Highly trained in the skills of battle and surveillance, they fight the battles before the battles reach the people. And as Will is about to learn, there is a large battle brewing. The exiled Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, is gathering his forces for an attack on the kingdom. This time, he will not be denied. . . .
Ruby Red Trilogy by Kerstin Geir (2009-2010)
Sixteen-year-old Gwen lives with her extended - and rather eccentric - family in an exclusive London neighborhood. In spite of her ancestors' peculiar history, she's had a relatively normal life so far. The time-traveling gene that runs like a secret thread through the female half of the family is supposed to have skipped over Gwen, so she hasn't been introduced to "the mysteries," and can spend her time hanging out with her best friend, Lesley. It comes as an unwelcome surprise when she starts taking sudden, uncontrolled leaps into the past.
She's totally unprepared for time travel, not to mention all that comes with it: fancy clothes, archaic manners, a mysterious secret society, and Gideon, her time-traveling counterpart. He's obnoxious, a know-it-all, and possibly the best-looking guy she's seen in any century...
The Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale (2003-2009)
She was born with her eyes closed and a word on her tongue, a word she could not taste.
Her name was Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, Crown Princess of Kildenree, and she spent the first years of her life listening to her aunt’s stories and learning the language of the birds, especially the swans. And when she was older, she watched as a colt was born, and she heard the first word on his tongue, his name, Falada.
Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins (2010-2013)
Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father—an elusive European warlock—only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tag-along ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.
Fables by Bill Willingham (2002-2015)
When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the ""mundys,"" their name for normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society that they call Fabletown.
From their exclusive luxury apartment buildings on Manhattan's Upper West Side, these creatures of legend must fight for their survival in the new world.
Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey (1968-2018)
On a beautiful world called Pern, an ancient way of life is about to come under attack from a myth that is all too real. Lessa is an outcast survivor--her parents murdered, her birthright stolen--a strong young woman who has never stopped dreaming of revenge. But when an ancient threat to Pern reemerges, Lessa will rise--upon the back of a great dragon with whom she shares a telepathic bond more intimate than any human connection. Together, dragon and rider will fly . . . and Pern will be changed forever.
Thursday Next by Jasper Fforde (2001-present)
England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection. But when someone begins kidnapping characters from works of literature and plucks Jane Eyre from the pages of Bront 's novel, Thursday is faced with the challenge of her career.
The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir (2019-present)
The Emperor needs necromancers.
The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman.
Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense.
Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service.
Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die.
Of course, some things are better left dead.

0160: Defenders #32
Cover Date: February 1976 On-Sale Date: November 18, 1975
The cover blurb promises us the origin of Nighthawk. As he was lying nearly dead at the end of the previous issue, let's hope we don't get a beginning and an end in the same installment. We also get the introduction of Ruby Thursday. She makes the HeadMEN less of a sausage fest. She'll go on to trouble Marvel heroes for years to come.
In-between the end of the previous installment and the splash page of this one, Doc has called in Daimon Hellstrom a.k.a. The Son of Satan. After unmasking what Doc assumed was an imposter and finding Kyle Richmond, Doc now assumes that Kyle is possessed by an evil force. Daimon is the Marvel Universe's resident exorcist and here we are. It is a rather nice splash.
Nighthawk awakens momentarily to scoff at Daimon's efforts and collapses back into unconsciousness. Both Daimon and Doc are puzzled. It's not a demon and not sorcery. What could it be?
Doc tries an old tactic to get to the bottom of things. He focuses the All-Purpose Amulet on Nighthawk and reveals...
Jack Norriss, who has been watching the proceedings recognizes the face. He tries to make Val remember it as well as it was on one of their dates when she was still Barbara. Val, not being Barbara, doesn't remember any of it and Jack finally spits it out. He's Chondu! It seems a rather forced way to remind everyone of Val's identity crisis.
Looking in on the Headmen, Gorilla-Man and Shrunken Bones are playing around with Nighthawk's brain when Ruby Thursday introduces herself.
Great body, but that lack of face leaves something to be desired. Gorilla-Man explains that Ruby's head isn't just a mask, it's an organic computer and can shapeshift! That means she can look like anyone or grow nasty tentacles out of it. That happens when Shrunken Bones voices an objection.
Back at base, Doc attempts to contact Nighthawk and they see an image of him in space at a crossroads. Doc explains that this is because he lacks any awareness of his location. This allows him to deduce that the switch was surgical, not magical. Doc has a plan and for some reason, Jack Norriss is a part of it. His response is less than enthusiastic.
The Defenders fly off to find Nighthawk's grey matter. Meanwhile, Nighthawk is caught in a nightmare world. (Sadly, Nightmare himself doesn't appear.) Nighthawk is seeing visions of Death. Death attempts to scythe him, but there's no effect. Nighthawk suddenly realizes he may already be dead. Nighthawk journeys back through his memories. Little Kyle in the Nighthawk costume is adorable!
The first memory takes him back to his mother's death, which leads his father to dumping him at a boarding school. In a wholly original story point, Kyle gets bullied at school. But he fights back. The school faculty don't seem to like him either. The principal says he'd love to expel him, but Kyle says he won't because he loves his daddy's donations to the school. The principal slaps Kyle and says he can't get into college with a letter from the principal, but Kyle correctly gambles that daddy's cash will buy him into whatever school he wants. He wins that gamble.
At school, Kyle meets Mindy, who will be important in a few years. He makes an honest effort to study, but years of fighting bullies and principals have taken their toll. We find out that Kyle likes to drink and he likes to drive and when he puts that together, Mindy winds up dead. (Or so we think.)
With no where else to turn, Uncle Sam sends Kyle a draft notice. Kyle thinks this will be it and he'll get killed in Viet Nam, but a heart murmur makes him a 4F. That same day, his dad is killed in a plane crash. Richmond enterprise is now Kyle's. But he has better things to do.
Kyle finds himself back at the crossroads with nowhere to go.
Back in the real world, the Defenders arrive in Westbury, Connecticut. Nighthawk is with them, but isn't acting all hateful. The band rings a doorbell. It's answered by an angelic looking woman who explodes after greeting our heroes. Seems they found the right place.
The angelic beings head puts itself back together again she's revealed as Ruby Thursday. Shrunken Bones and Gorilla-Man enter the room and see the bodies lying around. Are they dead? Gorilla-Man says no. If they can't control the world peacefully, why bother?
I mostly liked this one. The possession red herring was a little bit of fun. Doc knowing Daimon makes sense. They both circulate in similar circles. I don't know if Doc is aware of Daimon's heritage, but I would presume he does.
Doc figuring out the brain switch also makes sense. He was the world's top neurosurgeon before becoming the world's top sorcerer. He would be the one to recognize the signs.
Ruby takes the heroes out a bit too easily. Yes, we know she's a brilliant scientist so maybe she devised the perfect explosion to counter all the heroes various abilities, but it seems a stretch. I'm sure we won't get any further explanation.
Not a ten out of ten, but I'll take it. The story drums up enough interest to see how Kyle gets his brain back into his body. I wonder if they'll tell us why Chondu wanted to make the switch in the first place?
