#SHE WAS EVERYTHING

One part of the new live action that I haven’t really seen people talking about but really irks me is that at one point Lilo tells Nani “I like you better as a sister than a mum” and this is a direct quote from the animation.

However, in the original, Nani is warmed by that. She doesn’t enjoy having to take on a parental role for Lilo and she’s happy that there’s still moments between them that Lilo sees her as a sister.

In the live action, Nani feigns offence saying “ouch” and then this conflict is then resolved later on when Lilo tells her she likes her as a mum too.

This further parentifies Nani and completely misses her goals and struggles as a character. She does not want to be a mother to Lilo. She wants to carry on in that sister role where they fight and they scream and they laugh and they hug. She is still sorely missing the gap her parents have left and the line in the animation acknowledges how much they’re both struggling with the grief of missing their parents and how they understand it’s not a role that can just be filled by Nani.

It’s joint struggles in which Lilo tells her that she’s her sister and that it shouldn’t be down to her to fill her mothers boosts. It’s joint struggles in which Nani is finally allowed, for the first time in the movie by the way, to RELAX. and stop being the adult for a brief moment in time. She gladly accepts what Lilo says because she’s been trying so hard to provide that stable mother figure for Lilo and she finally understands that it’s a role that Lilo herself is not expecting her to fill.

Idk man it was just a random and unnecessary change but then again, so was half the movie.

lucrecia crescent is a fascinating character. something i find fond of her is the fact that while she felt guilty it didn't take away from the fact she still conducted and worked in horrible experiments. she convinced herself she was better than hojo when both he and her never quite had the right morals for being a scientist, even if she was better than he was on that side of things. we only see her primarily through other characters' eyes, most of whom are unreliable narrators on what truly went through her head during her time as a scientist and as sephiroth's mother. she is a mystery. like how she was to sephiroth. she was a mystery to everyone. even to herself
