Nostalgic Lookback: Digimon
So I just talked Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. Behind those, what was the third anime to tickle my fancy in 1999? Well, it was actually Pokemon, but I can't cover just the anime with that subject. Digimon: Digital Monsters was on Fox Kids at the time and I caught a few episodes of it infrequently (the Frigimon episode, the Skullgreymon episode, DemiDevimon's debut, and the one where Sora's Crest of Love glows and Birdramon becomes Guradamon to defend against Myotismon stick out in my memory as early exposures), but I wasn't sure it was for me. It just seemed like too blatant an attempt to cash in on Pokemon's popularity, right down to having "mon" in its title!
In the year 2000, however, something changed and Digimon just suddenly reached out and grabbed me. I think what helped was that I caught reruns of the Odaiba arc and the first airing of the Spiral Mountain arc, the two more gripping, dramatic and exciting arcs of the Digimon Adventure series. I was hooked and couldn't get enough of these kids and their Digital Monster companions' exploits now!
So for the early 2000s, Digimon was one of my main things. I got to experience Digimon Adventure from start to finish, caught Adventure 02 as it was regularly airing on Saturday mornings, and while I lost track of Fox Kids and the new Digimon series for a while, reruns on ABC Family and the premiere of the D-Reaper arc episodes on Fox Kids once I was able to find it and pinpoint the airing time put me on the dark, twisted rollercoaster ride that was Digimon Tamers. I saw Digimon Frontier every now and then when it was running on ABC Family, and even more on Toon Disney's Jetix block, but it was overall my least favorite and it seems I was far from alone there.
Oh yeah, you'd better believe Digimon The Movie was a theatrical event for me. It exists in absolute infamy for many reasons, and it was mostly working during the beginning and middle sections that span their own separate films, especially the Our War Game section, but by the time the constantly built-up Willis finally turns up for his own story, it absolutely falls apart. It is a disasterpiece and I love it.
The Digi-Battle Card Game, Digimon Trading cards and toys, and the virtual pet game Digivices were also essential to my Digixperience. Digimon cannot be said to be anywhere near as huge nowadays as it was back then in the late 90s and early 2000s, but barring some huge missteps (Xros Wars: The Young Hunters, Adventure Tri, Last Evolution Kizuna), it still provides the general quality and fun factor that I like to see in such a property. Digimon, forever the champions!

Digi Dynamic Shipping Game
Send me two names among the following 12 and I’ll write a short analysis post about them:
Taichi Yagami | Yamato Ishida | Sora Takenouchi | Koushirou Izumi | Mimi Tachikawa | Jyou Kidou | Takeru Takaishi | Hikari Yagami | Daisuke Motomiya | Miyako Inoue | Iori Hida | Ken Ichijouji
Whether canon provides input on them or not:
Takeru and Koushirou are probably one of the “most unlikely duos” at face value due to the fact that Adventure and 02 initially did not put a lot of emphasis on them interacting. Despite them being among the youngest members of the original Chosen Children, there were only very minor instances of them talking to each other. Interestingly enough, there isn’t any indication to assume that they do not get along though. On the contrary - the interactions they do have are all friendly at the beginning, with the notable moment being Takeru asking Koushirou whether he could evolve Patamon with his laptop as well and Koushirou getting super excited as a result. Once again, you can tell they’re among the younger members, whose experiences shape their roles as “knowing superiors” in 02 towards the new kids - even if their interactions with each other are rather limited. However, the longer the series progresses, the more it becomes apparent that a bond has indeed been growing between them - even if it’s not immediately visible.
Tri has chosen to “pair” these two together in the third movie - which was an interesting choice, considering how both of them are usually paired up with other characters respectively. Even prior to this, there have been instances that showed them casually enjoying and respecting each other’s company - in a fun little role-reversal, Koushirou is portrayed as seeking fashion advice and Takeru, being two years younger than him, immediately catches on his intentions, basically turning into his own personal wingman when it comes to impressing Mimi. Other scenes portray Takeru being among those that regularly spend time in Koushirou’s office, helping to clean and checking on his health - and in the stageplay, he is the one who prevents Koushirou from mis-reading the room any further while Taichi and Yamato have an awkward silence contest. It almost feels like he has become somewhat of an impulse control for Koushirou - which is further implied by the little scene in the 02 movie in which he states that “it looks like Koushirou-san hasn’t gotten a lot of sleep lately”. He is observant of Koushirou’s quirks and behaviours and seems to be regularly in touch, in person and in written form, as they’re also seen communicating constantly throughout the early stages of Kizuna.
The care isn’t just one-sided though - and it’s not like Koushirou doesn’t act as a senpai for Takeru in return after all. The scene I’ve chosen for this post is one of my favourite moments between them - Takeru ends up blaming himself for not having been able to do anything to prevent Patamon from getting infected. Instead of letting him dwell in self-pity, Koushirou encourages him not to focus on what he couldn’t do - but on what he will do instead. And that inspires Takeru so much that he ends up using the exact same analogy to try and pull Meiko out of her own state of apathy as well...
Long story short, while Koushirou and Takeru don’t have the most obvious, most elaborated on relationship in the series, there is a lot of respect, support and comfort they give each other and while their screentime doesn’t state how deep their bond goes, it still exists - and is interesting to speculate about.
Whether I think why and how they’d work:
While I haven’t paid a lot of attention to their relationship prior to this analysis, there are aspects about it that could be potentially very intriguing - especially in regards to their family backgrounds. First of all, they’re both care-takers in their own rights, with a tendency to blame themselves when things don’t go well - which can definitely be traced back to their respective childhood traumas, with one of them questioning his whereabouts and self-worth, whereas the other struggles with abandonment issues and the urge to keep everyone (in the broken family) together. They’re also both prone to hiding these feelings - behind laptop screens and fake smiles respectively. So in theory, only very specific people may be capable of breaking through to them, making them open up and feel safe and vulnerable. And honestly? Seeing how Takeru is already prone to worrying about Koushirou, his trusted senpai - how much would it affect him to hear about all the self-doubts he had been dealing with himself? How much would he be able to relate to that, wanting to help him to process everything? We can assume that Koushirou would eventually tell him about his past, about being adopted, considering how Takeru is the one who writes about all their adventures in his novel - and even if Koushirou may not open up about every single detail, these aspects could still be something for them to bond over even more. On the other hand - Koushirou, as depicted above, is also (more or less intentionally) able to break through Takeru’s barriers, making him be more honest about his emotions and facing them head-on. And again, only very few people may get him/them out of their shells like that - and they do it in very calm ways, as far as we can tell.
They’re both connectors, they both like to use computers/networking to stay in touch with everyone - and each other, bringing the squad together. They’re also both very, very fond of their families, so it’s not unlikely to assume that they could be good and soothing for each other once they’ve started opening up even further. There seems to be a lot of understanding and relatability between them - so besides a purely brotherly or platonic bond, there is a certain romantic potential between them healing together as well.
Whether I’d prefer them as platonic or romantic ship:
As mentioned above, I hadn’t focused too much on them prior to this analysis, since I had always found it a bit... Weird to see them get paired up in Tri. It had felt like they had replaced their “usual interaction partners” just for the sake of pairing them up as “left-over pairs” (since Taichi/Yamato and Mimi/Jyou were already pairs in the prior movies, Sora had to be paired up with the former and Hikari with Meiko, which all fell out of “the usual order”). However, digging deeper into their portrayal, they have managed to convince me of their bond actually having an organic dynamic with each other - that could really bloom once they grew a little older. Overall, I may still prefer them to be platonic, but as outlined before, there is a romantic potential in two people, who like to see their families happy, to become happy together as well.

Daisuke Week 2023 • Day 5
Day 5- Welcome to World’s No. 1 Noodle! (Best Partner Kizuna- HEY-rasshai! duet)
sub prompt b) What’s your favorite extra material piece’s moment with Daisuke & V-mon? (Movies, Drama CDs, Character Songs, Media Crossovers, etc)
There's a ton of extra-material stuff I love, and y'all know it~~
First, there’s MenAS which led me to love Daisuke’s failed attempt to become a villain – Daisuke Kaiser – which got stopped by Ken and Pucchiemon. Everyone who knows me is aware of my passion for this drama CD hehe~ Also Kiuchi’s impersonation of Park’s Kaiser laugh is so funny and cute!
Then, there’s Natsu e no Tobira drama CD too, which was the first Drama CD material to go serious and angsty with Daisuke – also has the beautiful response-song “Reach for You” – which is the answer to Natchan’s “Only Lonely” song. I think this drama CD only convinced me Daisuke can be used for a serious story. I love how this story also includes Wallace and Gummymon, and I love Natchan portrayal too. I totally recommend listening to it while reading Onkei’s translation.
And there’s Goggle track from Original Stories Spring 2003, where we learn a bit more of the hidden lore from Daisuke – about how he was a victim of Vamdemon who witnessed Taichi and the Chosen Children saving Odaiba and thus he started to try to become strong in order to protect his family and everyone. This tracks pretty much with the BelialVamdemon showdown scene, huh? Ah, this track was written by the series director Kakudou, so I think this has been there since 02 started its production…
And then there’s Kizuna material where the drama CD is all about Daisuke wanting to go on a trip with his friends while he’s doing his research! It’s so cute seeing him getting excited about every suggestion given by his friends~ Not to mention Dai-Vee duet HEY-rasshai! which is very funny to listen to and I love how they’re still bickering in the middle of a song!
About movies, Hurricane Touchdown (if you want to watch with good subs, please search for “Hudie subs”), Diablomon Strikes Back and Kizuna (please search for "L subs" or "Kizuna" fansubs because the official ones mistranslated a ton of things!!) as a whole are still my top favorite digi-movies with lots of cool Daisuke moments in them that I cannot pick one now oof ;v;
But from the classics… 2-TOP duet and Ashita are my top favorite songs of all time. 2-TOP is pretty funny and they even seem to bicker during the song~ Meanwhile Ashita is the song I listen to when I feel down, because this pretty song with positive and optimistic lyrics can calm my soul and make me keep doing my best!!

Digimon Adventure 02 (Blind Watch) - Episode 40
Damn! This was a lot to take in. I really enjoyed it despite the information overload. Loved seeing the international digi-destined/chosen children. Yeah, they were very stereotypical, but nothing really offensive, I thought they were pretty wholesome and cute. This episode was mainly focused on New York and Hong Kong with some other areas of the world thrown in in the background (and space lol, that's was a nice touch). Totally down for this 3-parter (got a little spoiled by the DVD menu).
Digimon introduced: Syakomon, Flareizamon, Gorillamon, Octomon, Apemon
Notes:
-So...some questions. Imperialdramon can breath in space apparently (or maybe he's flying so fast he doesn't need to breathe?) Also, the main kids' digimon made it clear that they only speak Japanese. So like...are digimon programmed to speak the language of their partner? Is it regional? Maybe it's like how if I buy an Alexa in Japan it'll come out of the box speaking Japanese. I wonder if digimon are capable of learning other languages...or if Koushiro could tweak their programming.
-So Michael's a digi-destined AND his dad's a movie star? How main character can one kid be!?
-Okay so new squad members:
New York digi-destined: Tatum (Airdramon), Maria (Centarumon), Lou (Tortomon), Steve (Frigimon), Sam/Phil (Flareizamon)
Hong Kong digi-destined: The Poi Brothers (Syakomon), Yue Hong (Apemon), Dien (Gorillamon)
India digi-destined: Mina
They're all so cute! The American team kinda gave me Captain Planet vibes with the diversity. As a Latina, I was excited to see Maria <3 Also, it's a cool idea to have triplet kids with matching digimon (the Poi brothers).
-Omg Syakomon's design is adorable! They look like a Polly Pocket :D
-It was cool to see different digimon partners, most of them being digimon the main kids have fought before. I kind of wish we got to see more of them in their rookie forms like we did for Syakomon.
-Why does Palmon get to evolve to Lilymon but Michael's Betamon only goes to champion level? With Benjamin there I would think everyone would power up, but I guess that's too much effort for the animators lol. (Either that or Betamon hasn't achieved a higher digivolution yet...)
-Loving the chilly winter vibes on this chilly winter day. Seeing anime characters bundled up makes me feel better about the cold.
-What is this Creation of Adam pose? Lol suddenly Hikari's in a renaissance painting with Angewomon. (No wonder the Poi brothers fell for her)
-Yue kinda seems like a badass, wish we could have seen more of her.
-Mysterious ending with Mummymon creepin' on a little boy. Nice eerie setup to entice me to watch on. It's funny how drastically everything's improved now that we've dropped the previous arc.

Before I start reviewing Digimon Adventure: (2020) I want to give a little background to my thoughts on the parts of the franchise I've experienced up to now and how they inform my opinions on the reboot.
The original canon:
I watched the original Digimon Adventure and Digimon Adventure 02 when I was a kid, probably around age 5-8. I never saw every episode but I saw most, and rewatched them in adulthood when they first released them on DVD in the UK. The reason I liked it as a kid is that it had a large cast of characters who all had real flaws and individual qualities that made them feel real. When I watched as an adult I really appreciated that it didn't shy away from Yamato's and Takeru's parents being divorced, Koushiro being adopted or the children experiencing grief when their friends and allies died. It also made it feel like there were real stakes in the story which made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Another main reason I liked it is because the characters actually aged between each series so in 02 we got to see more mature versions of the Digi-destined as well as new characters, who for the most part I liked. Their flaws grated on me a bit more than the original characters as they felt slightly more superficial. (Davis/Daisuke being obsessed with Kari being the major source of irritation.)
As far as Tri. is concerned, I enjoyed it 99% of the time. I didn't mind Meiko as a character or her partner. I felt the original characters got some good development even if it was a little rushed in places. (Biyomon and Sora's relationship in the fourth movie particularly stands out to me.) I would also have liked to see the 02 kids properly and did feel it was out of character for the original kids to not worry about them for the most part. I hear this is addressed in the new movie but I haven't seen that yet so can't really comment.
The last major thing I enjoyed about the original is that it was partially set in the real world. I'm a sucker for anime/fantasy series set in the real world and as much as I love the digital world, I really enjoy it when the characters are hanging out in Japan or even battling in the real world. That sentiment will definitely tie in to my thoughts on the reboot.
As a whole I really enjoyed the old canon (Kizuna excluded for now) but I don't expect the reboot to follow it too closely, nor do I think they should. We've already seen the old version, give us something new and different rather than repeating the same old stories and format.
Finally, I think it's fair to say my favourite characters in the original were Yamato and Gabumon plus Joe and Gomamon. However in Tri. I really enjoyed the focus on Joe and Mimi as characters in the second movie, that scene in the rain is one of the few times I cried watching Tri.
Basically I love Digimon and I'm very excited for what the new series has in store!

Digimon Adventure (’20) Ep 1 Live Reaction
Here is my reaction as I was watching the First Episode. Next time my reactions will be on my YouTube Channel. Spoilers under cut!
Holy heck. I'm really liking the intro and animation. Kari has a new outfit. So does TK.
New OP song. Butterfly is a great song, but it's nice to have something a bit different. Don't know how I feel about it. It's a bit too screamy. But maybe I'll get used to it.
That dial-up though. XD
Digi-egg
Koromon.
Is that... a Tsumemon? The story starts a bit earlier than the original... before Tai goes to Summer camp.
Kari is going someplace with their mom?
Izzy lives in the same building as Tai? They meet up first?
Izzy seems more shy.
Cyberattack in Toyko.
Tai is still bad with tech. XDDDD At least he admits it.
Oh no! The trains... A reference to Frontier? I hope Kari is going to be okay. I will throw hands if something bad happens to her.
Oh no... the train.... they are on it!
Tai's gets courage to act!
Here comes Koromon!
The Digital World data stream? Koromon's hurt?! Tai reaches out to him and grabs him. Another action of courage to act.
Cameos of the other Digi-Destined.
Izzy curiosity about Tai disappearing opens his crest on his I-Pad (still that pineapple yellow though! XDDD )
Wait. Korromon glows then becomes a small ball of light, which becomes the D1 digivice?
No I guess, Koromon glows and becomes Agumon, the ball of light was separate that the D1 became the D1 digivice.
Tai and Agumon are in the digital data stream in a solid zone.
Introductions. Enemy Digimon.
So Agumon fights a Tsumemon? first and not Kuwagamon? Lots of Tsumemon?!
Agumon is a lot more physical, and more fluid in his movements. Less static with his attacks. I like this.
Oh! Izzy found out that he can contact Tai!
OH HO! Tai joins the fight! The Tsumemon? all burst I guess they defeated this group.
Tai finds out where he's at thanks to Izzy.
Of course Izzy has a laptop too! (Still Pineapple Mac) Of course! NERD! XDDD Izzy helping track where the virus digimon are attacking the train line data.
Naruto reference? Oh no It digivolved! Twice now? Again the courage to act.
Agumon digivolves.
Greymon!
He's pissed!
He continues to be more battle flexible.
I like the battle music.
Collision avoided. Another digital attack!? In the US? A military system. This is bad!
Oooo! Garurumon makes an appearance. He's in the Digital Field as well. With Matt!? How'd he get there?!
The ED is nice. I guess it explains Matt's appearance in the Digital Field.
Preview of next episode. I'm excited! -
I really like how less static things are. Though the story starts off a bit differently, it seems more of a Digimon movie arc sort of beginning. I wonder if that means we will see Willis, get a greater tie to Mimi's ties to America, and to everyone in 02.

Digimon Anniversary
I know this is a day late, but Digimon Adventure just had its 20 year anniversary! In honor of the occasion I created this blog to celebrate my favorite Chosen Child, the Eighth Digi-Destined, Kari Kamiya (or Hikari Yagami in the Japanese version.) There’s so much I want to say about this character and what she means to me, all of which will be explored in future posts! But I want this post to focus on Digimon itself.
I’ve always had Digimon in my life. I don’t remember a time where I didn’t watch the franchise in some capacity. I watched it on ABC Family in the mornings before school. I saw Adventure, 02, Tamers, and Frontier. I saw when Savers first aired. I owned the VHS tapes of the original series. I got the card packs they sold, trying to collect each and every Digimon seen in the show. I owned quite a few of the stuffed animals. I even had a collectible lunch box. I loved it to death. I would go outside with my friends and play Digimon (don’t ask me how, I couldn’t tell you.) It was my entire world.
Until it wasn’t. I got older, and I left those things behind. I got into new TV shows and franchises, only reminiscing on my favorite childhood show once in a blue moon.
But that all changed when I became more adept at using the internet. I was in middle school at that point, and I had discovered anime. Only then did I realize Digimon was my first anime. It inspired me to rewatch the series. And I fell down the rabbit hole once again.
I rediscovered why the show had meant so much to me as a child, while also gaining a new appreciation for the characters. I was actually able to remember events past the Myotismon arc, which I don’t actually recall seeing as a young child. It was like experiencing the magic all over again.
Since then, the overwhelming fondness has come in waves. But my passion reawakened with the announcement of Digimon Tri. I was so excited, I visited the website every day despite not speaking or reading any Japanese. I scoured the internet for news. It was the first time I used Tumblr. I kept up to date with all the Tri news, watching the movies as they came out. And while Tri certainly has its flaws, I still love it.
Fast forward to today (or rather, yesterday.) It’s been 20 years since this life changing series began. We’ve received news there will be more content soon with the original Digi-Destined. I will see the characters I’ve loved my whole life, the friends they have become to me. I’m 21 now. I still collect the stuffed animals. I still buy the merchandise. It brings me back to when I was a kid. I think that’s a large point of the series to begin with. I’m so thankful to have grown up with this wonderful series beside me. It’s given me so much. I hope it can continue to give others what it’s given me.

I'm excited for the last movie so it all can end I I'm sure tai would end up finding the 02 kids with a poor explanation on where they were. I'm tired of mei, all the movies where we were suppose to have the original digi kids just went down the drain the only thing I enjoyed was tai and matts bromance but other than that mei and her digimon who I can't even Remember the name is sucking the soul out of me I didn't van watch this whole movie this time only the end and when tai died no one looksad
if i hear “mei” from meicoomon one more god damn time, im going to fucking lose it.
yeah i guess they sort of took it........too well when tai “died” but i excpect the last movie to have SOME scenes of them crying. i mean if the give meiko 3 movies of her constantly crying, then surely they can make the others cry too, because...well...TAI SACREFICED HIMSELF FOR YOU GUYS!

Rewatching Digimon 02 13-17
His Masters Voice I love how Patamon and Gatomon spy on the kids Teacher: *Monotone* Now isn't that exciting Takari confirmed These school announcements though. Whoever was in charge of writing those lines I give praise They never went more in depth with this story line since the writers couldn't agree on a direction but it would have been interesting I like she had to explain herself "Get back I play a lot of soccer!... So I know how to kick!" The ending of this episode is the DigiRap XD This episode must have come out close to when the movie did. The Samurai of Sincerity Mimi throws the best parties at other people's houses Frickin Digitamamon They like to use 'wipe out his enemies' a lot And tell me why you didn't do shit about the Dark Masters? Yeah, Matt asked for half off on his meals. Jesus TK, how did you not remember this? Dude you're from America not Britain Digitamamon's shell opens and closes with a robotic door noise When did they get back? There is an infinite universe inside his shell. Big Trouble in Little Edo The reporters speech inflections "The boy genius has been gone for 2 months" He's probably dead Shogungeckomon is giant, just blast the damn spear 20,000 Digi-Leagues Under the Sea "MegaSeadramon attack with! Whatever you feel like man." "How about if I shove my foot up your ass" There are turtles in the digital world Ghost of a Chance First of all, just from seeing the title. I know what this is, and I don't approve. Stop it. I'm not okay with this. The feels. Mustard on a pizza? WTF Davis!? That date is August 1st. They returned from the Digital World that day but they didn't defeat Myotismon that day 8/1 Odaiba Rememberence Day Cody: I have to say I'm afraid we won't be able to live up to you original digidestined Nope, you can't Matt lives like a college kid Working at the tv station, they make it look like he's a cop D3s are needed to open the portal? Then how did Mimi and Michael get in? Aww Gatomon, no, don't cry! Poor baby
