* 191 pages (five days to read) * First published 1981-12 * Fourth numbered TOS Pocket Books
Stardate 7815.3 - While the cover image (and a couple of story elements) makes it seem to have been set after the first movie the author had started writing it before that movie was released.
The author was mid-late twenties when he got this published, mere years after having a story he wrote get made into an episode of the Animated Series. Unlike the other two 'new' novels this had an intro, that seems unneeded. Although it did provide a bit of context for the time. The Author's notes also make it obvious that there was a longer turn around for publishing when the Pocket Books Trek Novels were getting started - nearly a year from note to publish. (I think it probably dropped to less than six months before the turn of the century.)
The story is heavily focused on Spock, Bones, and the 'character of the week' as they attempt to reclaim an artifact. Kirk is less present, dealing with a limited threat from Klingons. Chekov gets bookend scenes dealing with weight gain* that seems merely story padding (and would have been to meet contract requirements for minimum screen time if this was an episode). Scotty and Sulu barely get a mention, and while Uhura is slightly more present there's a description of clothing that sexualises her in a very unneeded manner. (At the same age I might well have written similar were I to write, even with 30 more years of social progress.)
Kirk had spent a portion of his early career on a lightly populated planet with strategic resources for starship operation and befriended the King. Klingon interference in the politics of the planet led to the King, Queen, and Princess being taken to another planet for their safety. And them being stuck there for 18 years until it seems possible to bring them back safely. Having the Princess take on the role of ruler requires the artifact of their Gods benevolence be returned so there's an expedition on another planet to reclaim it. Hence the focus on Spock, Bones, and the Princess.
Unlike the earlier couple of books I've reread for this, I didn't feel like most of the characters were written poorly. Spock was logical, and frustrated with the emotional behavior of Bones. Bones was inclined to prod Spock on occasion and reacted based on feelings a lot. On the other hand he was displeased with aging, and was tempted to start a relationship with the much younger Princess.
*Weight gain that only existed as a result of a mis-calibrated scale in the medbay area. Discovered after he spent much of the book, in those short moments he was seen, exercising too much and eating too little.

The con after the con (post report and news!)
First of all, con attendees please check your Conline email for the Post-Con report!
Secondly,
Dear K/S friends,
Greetings! The KiScon newsletter is back – and will resume its monthly frequency to bring you all our announcements (events, fic fests, KiScon 2023 progress reports, and more news from the world of K/S) directly into your inbox.
1. KiScon 2022 – A short recap:
We made it through con farr and enjoyed every minute of it! It was an amazing and immersive weekend filled with many wonderful discussions and presentations, plot bunnies roaming freely, and the delights of fanworks shared among us.
We might not have been all together in a hotel for three days, but despite the virtual format and our dispersion throughout locations and timezones the con still defined a time and place for us, a happy bubble, and everything else around it, in that so-called real life out there, was not allowed to intrude much.
A detailed post-con report (pdf file) has been sent out by email to all registered members a few days ago; it includes a bunch of goodies to prolong the squee: the complete playlist of our vid shows, the Round Robin fic, fic recs, and links to several panel notes and presentations, as well as other important download links (e.g. for the con bag items) and info where you can find KiScon year-round. If you were registered for KiScon 2022, but have not received this email, please make sure to check the (fannish) email you used to register for KiScon, check your spam folder, and get in touch with us.
We've also contacted all winners of our competitions and all buyers and sellers from the auction.
Thank you to everyone who helped at KiScon 2022 in any way: thank you to all of our amazing volunteers and panelists, authors, artists, and vidders; thank you to all who created for and donated to the goodie bags; thank you to all who took part in the auction as buyer or seller, and especially to those who donated their proceeds to support KiScon or to charity; thank you to T’Uhura, Easy (MrsAtoz), and Herself_nyc aka NancyKay who sponsored the KiScon 2022 scholarships; and thank you to all who attended and made the con so much memorable fun. You’re the best!
2. KiScon 2023:
As already announced in the Closing Ceremony, KiScon will return for the weekend 3–5 Nov, 2023. Registration will open in January 2023. Stay tuned for the announcement!
This con will again be an online convention, but we are already working on a hybrid (in-person & online) format for 2024, and we are in negotiations with a hotel.
3. Upcoming Events:
Apart from these K/S-filled con weekends we will continue to host events (e.g. Pub Nights, but also competitions and fests) year-round. Our "KiScord" (KiScon Discord server) will stay open and active. There can never be enough K/S in one’s life.
Starting this week, there will be an online event every Saturday, with alternating Pub Nights and Viewing Parties.

Pub Night – The Afterglow
Aaand the Pub Nights are back! But we'll use Zoom instead of the Discord chat, for better audio and video quality.
Saturday, 26 Nov 2022 11:00 a.m. PST 01:00 p.m. CST 02:00 p.m. EST 07:00 p.m. GMT/UTC 20:00 CET

Cinema of Squee – TOS Viewing Party
Saturday, 3 Dec 2022 01:00 p.m. PST 03:00 p.m. CST 04:00 p.m. EST 09:00 p.m. GMT/UTC 22:00 CET
We are going to watch the two pilots: "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (restored, unaired pilot version). This takes place on Zoom, much like our ST V viewing party at the end of KiScon.
4. K/S Advent Calendar:
The official deadline for K/S Advent Calendar submissions is in the past (with the exception of a few individual deadline extensions), and it enabled the mods to gather enough works to draw up the schedule for the gradual reveal throughout December. However, you can still submit works (fic, art, vids, podfic, even photos of crafted 3D-objects) to the collection until the end of the year, both as fill for a prompt and as extra work (for an explanation how adding a fanwork to a collection works, please see the FAQs and Rules section on the AO3 collection profile).
If there are works coming in very late in December, they will be revealed at the end of K/S Advent, as a kind of New Years Eve firework. Works coming in sooner will be added to the daily reveals. In any case, the collection will be closed to adding new works on 31 Dec, 2022, 11:59 a.m. UTC!

Tumblr callout posts can really be some of the funniest posts on this website because you’ll have someone mixing legitimate accusations of innapropriate behavior with a relatively benign comment from several years ago and they’re treated with equal weight

Can people stop picking “gluten free” as the dietary request of choice to show that a character is annoying/wealthy/privileged/etc?
Not to start discourse, but there are a lot of other really stupid and UNNECESSARY diets to choose from

More Than Bookstores, These Shops are Must-visit Meccas to the Printed Word
Librairie Drawn & Quarterly 211 Rue Bernard O, Montréal, QC H2T 2K5, Canada
For the comic and graphic novel enthusiast, Montreal’s Drawn & Quarterly is a revered pilgrimage site. The thriving store is the physical location of world famous graphic novel publisher Drawn & Quarterly, stocking its own titles as well as books produced by other international alt-presses, like McSweeneys, Fantagraphics, Koyama, New Directions, Breakdown Press, and more. There’s no other place in the world so comprehensive. Whether you’re a comic regular or new to the scene, you’ll be drawn in and swept away by the varied illustration styles and innovative visual storytelling on draft.
Art Metropole, Toronto 88 King St. West, 2nd floor, Toronto, ON, M5V1N6, Canada
This legendary, artist-run non-profit publishes, distributes, and exhibits artists’ publications and other materials. Founded in 1974 by Canadian artist collective General Idea, Art Metropole has always been on the cutting edge of Toronto’s artistic community. Here, you’ll find video, audio, and electronic media carefully set beside bespoke books and thoughtful printed matter on conceptual art, which you can read in between viewings of Art Metropole’s must-see exhibitions and installations.
Penguin Shop 320 Front Street West, Toronto, Canada, M5V 3B6
Here’s one for the committed collector of Penguin Classics, that famous sixpenny, orange-spined series that has become a 20th-century design icon. Penguin Random House’s first permanent shop is here in the lobby of its Canadian headquarters. It’s packed with 300 titles, branded mugs, notebooks, and brightly colored tees. Toronto-based design studio Figure3 created mobile bookshelving for the tiny space, designed to mimic classic Penguin spines. Better still, company staff—both editors and designers—work the store. Go pick a Penguin.
William Stout Architectural Books 804 Montgomery St, San Francisco, CA 94133, USA
Carrying over 70,000 titles in the fields of architecture, graphic and industrial design and urban planning, William Stout Architectural Books is a vital United States resource for anyone in the creative industry. This space was founded 30 years ago when a former architect decided that the US needed a place that stocked the hard to find tomes he appreciated in Europe. Design professionals will let out heartfelt sighs of admiration as they flip through the rare compendiums that they find here.
Hennessey + Ingalls 300 S Santa Fe Ave M, Los Angeles, CA 90013, USA
Since 1963, Hennessey + Ingalls has been Southern California’s largest and most extensive source for books on all things visual. With thousands of art, interior design, graphics, photography, fashion, gardening, and decorative art books, you’re sure to find anything specific that you’re looking for in this 5,000-square-foot space. In 2016, the shop relocated its entire operation to downtown LA, closing its Santa Monica and Hollywood stores, to become one of the major go-tos in the city’s rapidly developing Arts District.
Ampersand Gallery & Fine Books 2916 N.E. Alberta St., Portland, OR 97211
Old and new beautifully collide in this essential Portland destination, a shop and gallery admired by creative locals for its intriguing mix of contemporary design books and vintage postcards, photographs, and other scraps of inspiring antique ephemera. On this snug spot’s walls you’ll find a monthly rotation of contemporary artworks by local artists and illustrators; and below, a tightly packed inventory of titles are aligned tidily in square wooden shelving units. Between bright tempting books on the functionality of decorated letters or contemporary Polaroid art, you might spy a copy of our very own 99U magazine. Nothing average here.
Dallas’ Joule Hotel, The Taschen Library 1530 Main St, Dallas, TX 75201, USA
Stay at the Joule Hotel in Dallas for some basic rest and recreation, but the smart boutique hotel’s Taschen Library will really send you places. The German publishing company, famous for its collectable books on art, photography, interior design, architecture, film, and fashion, curated this small, cozy shop in 2013, just by the Texan hotel’s lobby. It’s been called the “Joule’s jewel box of a bookshop”. re you’ll find items with a jewel’s price tag too, with some volumes ranging reaching up to $1,000+. Quite a trip.

Graham Foundation Bookshop 4 W Burton Pl, Chicago, IL 60610, USA
Located on the premises of a prestigious art foundation, this bookstore offers a selection of publications produced by grantees along with titles related to its public programming, as well as new forward-thinking books on architecture, urbanism, and design. It also carries monographs, catalogues, and theory-based titles from the likes of Sternberg Press, MIT Press, Spector Books, and the Architectural Association. Designers will swoon at the shop’s white mesh display cases, which snake around the wood paneled room, designed by architect Ania Jaworska.
Horse & Buggy Press and Friends 1116 Broad St, Durham, NC 27705
If you’re in Durham and find yourself pining for some traditional, hand-cranked letterpress goodies, you’re in luck. Look no further than the Horse & Buggy Press and Friends. Two sturdy 1960s Vandercook proof presses sit at the bank of this charming graphic design and book production studio, and at the front of the 500-square foot location, you’ll discover an art gallery and gift-shop (presumably constituting the “…and Friends”). The store showcases work by industrious craftspeople from across the Southeast—whether glass and pottery or printmaking and drawings. There’s also a top-notch selection of books and magazines about all things craft based. Craft enthusiasts who make it there will find plenty to share.
Ooga Booga 943 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012, USA
No “best bookstore for designers list” is complete without the cultish Ooga Booga, a hidden away second floor shop in LA’s Chinatown that carries a ramshackle mix of books, zines, mixtapes, records, home goods, and apparel. The store programs—from concerts and film screenings to much-anticipated book releases—in its second location, known as Ooga Twooga and located in the art space 356 Mission. You owe it to yourself to boogie on down to Ooga Booga whenever you can.
Actual Source 50 E 500 N Suite 103, Provo, UT 84606, USA
Those with an eye for the deadpan and heavily typographic will undoubtedly find what they’re looking for here. Actual Source is the collaborative design practice of Davis Ngarupe and JP Haynie, and together they create publications, identities, websites, and spaces. But Actual Source also ambitiously collaborates with designers to release limited edition books, magazines, fonts, clothing, and furniture, which they sell at their office space in Provo and online. In the mood for experimental type specimens, that look like no other specimen you’ve ever seen, or a contemporary magazine musing on the Bauhaus? Look no further.

Ulises 31 E Columbia Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19125, USA
This Philly bookshop was named after the conceptual book artist and theorist Ulises Carrión, who once said, “a book is a sequence of spaces”. The shop’s owners have taken this idea literally, carefully planning how each book is displayed in the warehouse-style interior of the store. How to Let Go of the Thoughts that Cause Depression
Depression is different from other illnesses in that, in addition to the physiological symptoms (loss of appetite, nervousness, sleeplessness, fatigue), there are the accompanying thoughts that can be so incredibly painful. For example, when my Raynaud’s flares up, the numbness in my fingers can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t tell me that I am worthless, pathetic, and that things will never ever get better. During severe depressive episodes, however, these thoughts can be life-threatening: They insist that the only way out of the pain is to leave this world.
Being able to manage our thought stream will direct us toward health, as our thoughts are constantly communicating with the various systems of our body, either sending certain glands or organs an SOS in distress, or a note that everything is fine, resulting in calm. But being able to harness this craziness in the midst of depression and anxiety is so very difficult.
Here are some of the ways I try to let go of the thoughts that cause depression and anxiety. Some days I am much more successful than others.
Identify the Distortions
I have benefited immensely from David Burns’ book Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy — from doing the cognitive behavioral therapy exercises he prescribes to identifying the various distortions in my own thinking that he presents in his book and his workbook. They include:
All-or-nothing thinking – I look at things in absolute, black-and-white categories.
Overgeneralization – I view a negative event as a never-ending pattern of defeat.
Mental filter – Dwelling on the negatives and ignore the positives.
Discounting the positives – Insisting that my accomplishments or positive qualities don’t count (my college diploma was a stroke of luck … really, it was).
Jumping to conclusions – I conclude things are bad without any definite evidence. These include mind reading (assuming that people are reacting negatively to you) and fortune telling (predicting that things will turn out badly).
Magnification or minimization – I blow things way out of proportion or shrink their importance.
Emotional reasoning – Reasoning from how I feel: “I feel like an idiot, so I must be one.”
“Should” statements – I criticize myself or other people with “shoulds,” “shouldn’ts,” “musts,” “oughts,” and “have-tos.”
Labeling – Instead of saying, “I made a mistake,” I tell myself, “I’m a jerk” or “I’m a loser.”
Blame – Blaming myself for something I wasn’t entirely responsible for, or blaming other people and overlook ways that I contributed to a problem.
It doesn’t take long to identify one or more of these in your thinking. Just recognizing these traps can be helpful. You might then try one of the methods listed in Burns’ 15 Ways to Untwist Your Thinking. A warning, though: I’d wait until you have emerged from a severe depressive episode before you attempt some of these exercises. I’ve made the mistake of trying too hard to “fix” my thinking during severe depression, which has made it worse. It’s better to focus on the other ways listed below.
Focus on the Present
Although every self-help book I read touches on this, I am just beginning to really learn what it means to focus on the present and to appreciate the healing power of mindfulness, which, according to meditation teacher and bestselling author Jon Kabat-Zinn, is “paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.” If we continue to practice this, he explains, “this kind of attention nurtures greater awareness, clarity, and acceptance of the present-moment reality.” It’s not that we don’t feel the hurt, rage, and sadness that lives at the surface of our minds. It’s not an attempt to escape all the suffering that is there. But if we can observe all of our projections into the past and future — and all of the judgments that are part of our thought stream — and simply get back to what is happening right now, right here, we can allow a little room between our thoughts and our reality. With some awareness, we can begin to detach from the stories that we spin and from the commentaries that are so often feeding our pain.
One of the best ways we stay present is by keeping our attention on our breath. Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Thich Nhat Hanh instructs us that with each in-breath, we might say, “Breathing in, I know that I am breathing in.” And with each out-breath, “Breathing out, I know I am breathing out.” In his book You Are Here, he explains that mindful breathing is a kind of bridge that brings the body and the mind together. We start by this simple gesture of watching our breath, and then by this mindfulness of breath we begin to stich the body and mind together and generate a calm that will penetrate both.
Apply Self-Compassion
“Self-compassion doesn’t eradicate pain or negative experiences,” Kristin Neff, PhD, explains in her book Self-Compassion. “It just embraces them with kindness and gives them space to transform on their own.” It gives us the “calm courage needed to face our unwanted emotions head-on.” When I’m in the most pain — especially during a severe depressive episode — it is self-compassion more than anything else (cognitive behavioral therapy techniques, mindful breathing, etc.) that saves me and restores me to sanity. Nhat Hanh says that we should treat our depression tenderly, as we would treat a child. He writes:
If you feel irritation or depression or despair, recognize their presence and practice this mantra: “Dear one, I am here for you.” You should talk to your depression or your anger just as you would to a child. You embrace it tenderly with the energy of mindfulness and say, “Dear one, I know you are there, and I am going to take care of you,” just as you would with your crying baby.
It is so easy to be so cruel to ourselves without even realizing it. The ruminations that are part of depression beat us down and shred us until there is practically nothing there. That’s why it is so critical to apply self-compassion from the start, and treat ourselves, as well as our depression, as the scared little child that needs comforting, not scorn.
Acknowledge the Transience of Things
One of my favorite prayers is St. Teresa of Avila’s “Bookmark” that says:
Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing;
God only is changeless.
Patience gains all things.
Who has God wants nothing.
God alone suffices.
If the religious language bothers you, Eckhart Tolle says much the same when he writes in A New Earth:
Once you see and accept the transience of all things and the inevitability of change, you can enjoy the pleasures of the world while they last without fear of loss or anxiety about the future. When you are detached, you gain a higher vantage point from which to view the event in your life instead of being trapped inside them.
Absolutely everything, especially our feelings and emotions, is impermanent. By simply remembering that nothing ever stays, I am freed from the suffocating thoughts of my depression — the formidable fear that this sadness will always be with me, as well as the circumstances that are causing it. By acknowledging the transience of life, I am again called to pay attention to the present moment, where there is more peace and calm than I think.
