This is my first fanfic for Whumptober 2023! I hope you enjoy it! You can find it here or on AO3
Posting Day: 1
Prompt Day 1: Safety Net
Fandom: Once Upon a Time (TV)
Couple: Rumplestiltskin & Belle (Rumbelle)
Belle woke up gasping and clutching her bedsheets, cold sweats taking over her. Another one of her nightmares- memories from the Ogre War, more likely- returning to disturb her night. She took some time to regulate her breathing and calm her racing heart, that seemed to not be giving her any peace. After a few minutes, she analyzed her surroundings, slowly letting go of the tightly-gripped linen bedsheets and letting her hands rest at her side.
Her bedchambeds were illuminated by the moonlight coming through the large windows, as well as the flames that were continuously crackling in the fireplace. The girl could see her oaken wardrobe, her nightstand holding a few of her books, as well as the vanity table in the other corner of the room, her armchair, her blue plush rug and the small chandelier above, which was now turned off, basking her room in darkness. As comforting as she found her bedchambers to be, she left her bed, shoving her feet in a comfortable pair of slippers, grabbed a candle which she lit as fast as she could, then carefully left her room, locking the door behind, and shuffled downstairs. As late as it was, she knew she could count on the almost constant presence of her master in the Great Hall, spinning continuously throughout the night.
As her steps finally led her to the Great Hall, leaving the carpeted stone brick staircase behind, a lulling sound could be heard coming from the room- the sound of the spinning wheel creaking and turning as straw was undoubtedly turned into gold. Sure enough, Belle entered, only to find Rumplestiltskin spinning close to the fireplace, his fingers expertly turning the wheel, twisting the straw and leading the gold to pool close to his feet. She walked in, leaving the candle to sit on a small table, then allowed her hand to brush against his shoulder, startling him slightly and letting the wheel come to a stop. His gaze finally moved up to meet hers, noticing her eyes of a blue as deep as the ocean, that seemed disturbed, restless.
"I couldn't sleep" was all she said, her voice soft, low, tinged by the very few hours of slumber that she managed to catch. She didn't have to mention the nightmares, the memories of the war still plaguing her, as he had become relatively used to this transpiring. He simply nodded, quickly fixed her a cup of tea, very gently handling it to her, and plumped up the plush pillows close to his wheel to allow her to sit and rest there for a while, enveloped by the warmth of the flames and the familiarity of his presence. Belle sat on the pillows, instead of occupying her usual armchair, grabbed the quilt she usually kept there and wrapped it around herself as her back came to rest against his stool.
"Are you alright, dearie?" Was all he asked, a tinge of concern coming to the surface. He didn't wish to seem weak, but in the comforting darkness of midnight, when nobody else was around to notice such trivialities, Rumplestiltskin allowed a sliver of humanity to creep up in front of his little maid. It was the least he could do for all the times in which she did not let herself be pushed away by his beastly self and even acted so kindly, with such care, towards him. When the girl nodded, relief came flooding in and he responded with a stroke of her curls and a tentative smile, which was returned with a content smile and a squeeze of his hand. She carefully grabbed the cup of tea he had prepared for her and took a sip, letting it soothe her nerves.
Thus, the sorcerer returned to his spinning, letting the creaking of the wooden wheel fill the room as the maid sighed and allowed herself to melt into the peacefulness of it all. The two of them had been stranger only months prior, and now, when she was plagued by darkness and crippling fear, she trusted she could find him there and trusted he may bring her light and comfort. As dangerous as everyone else found him, she had become to see him as her safety net.

Launching Google Sensitive Data Protection for Cloud Storage

Google Sensitive Data Protection
In order to fuel their businesses, organisations rely on insights that are driven by data; nevertheless, in order to maximise the potential of data, organisations must undertake the duty of handling it safely. When data growth can rapidly outpace the ability to manually review it, this can be a concern. Additionally, data sprawl can lead to sensitive material appearing in unexpected places, which can occur when data is spread out.
Sensitive data protection
In an effort to be of assistance, google cloud are pleased to announce that their Sensitive Data Protection (SDP) discovery service now supports Cloud Storage, joining BigQuery, BigLake, and Cloud SQL in this regard. Cloud Storage is a fully managed service that is enterprise-ready and offered by Google Cloud for the purpose of storing unstructured data.
You should perform continuous monitoring of your data assets throughout the entirety of your organisation, specific folders inside the organisation, or individual projects. In the cloud console, a user interface that is both powerful and simple to operate. The security, privacy, and compliance posture of your organisation can be informed by using data asset profiles. You can select from more than 150 established detectors, or you can add your own custom types. You can also modify detection levels and tailor detection rules to meet your requirements and cut down on noise.
The Security Command Centre Enterprise risk engine has a complete and comprehensive integration of the Google Sensitive Data Protection technology. In addition to continuously monitoring your data, identifying your high-value assets, analysing weaknesses, and simulating real-world attack scenarios, this powerful combo also does vulnerability analysis. Because of this insight, you will be able to protect the data that is the driving force behind your organisation and take preventative measures to address security, posture, and threat issues.
Specific sensitive aspects within your data can be classified and de-identified with the use of the tools that are provided by Google Sensitive Data Protection. In order to ensure that you comply with legislation and corporate policy, this fine-grained data minimization can assist you in preparing data for the training of AI models or protecting customer IDs in chats, feedback, AI prompts, and generated responses.
When it comes to protecting your assets, Sensitive Data Protection works to assist you in taking a data-centric strategy. By transforming your data, de-identification helps you to lower the risk associated with your data while maintaining the utility of your data. The DLP API and Cloud Data Loss Prevention are both integral components of the Google Sensitive Data Protection framework. Utilise the built-in functionality that the DLP API provides for a variety of Google Cloud services.
Additionally, the in-line content methods of the DLP API make it possible to accommodate additional data sources, custom workloads, and applications that are either hosted on or independent of the cloud. In addition, you can leverage insights to implement more granular access rules at the column level, as well as dynamic masking capabilities.
The most common services that their customers use to store data on Google Cloud are now supported by SDP discovery as a result of this upgrade. Google Sensitive Data Protection discovery is a continuous data monitoring service that helps identify the locations of sensitive data in order to assist with the management of compliance risk, as well as security and privacy implications. In addition, it has the capability to identify data such as personally identifiable information (PII), financial data, and credentials, all of which may be utilised to make informed decisions regarding your security, privacy, and compliance posture.
With the help of SDP discovery, monitoring your data footprint may provide you with information regarding the types of file clusters that are contained within each storage bucket, as well as whether or not any sensitive data is shared openly or is not configured to employ customer maintained encryption keys.
You now have the ability to construct data profiles of your Cloud Storage buckets, in addition to BigQuery and Cloud SQL tables, by running discovery at the organisation, folder, and project levels. This gives you the ability to acquire a bird’s-eye perspective of your data assets and rapidly discover any unexpected results, such as highly sensitive data that is located in a new geographic area or with insufficient controls.
This allows you to get a data profile for each and every asset that is within the scope of the project. You can also drill down to specific projects, buckets, databases, tables, and columns. In addition, you are able to achieve more sophisticated filtering, as well as construct individualised dashboards and reports by utilising the readymade dashboard that is provided by Looker Studio.
An integral component of your safety net
When it comes to your data assets, Google Sensitive Data Protection serves as a source of truth and can automatically produce alarm events and submit metrics for audit reports.
Additionally, it can report metrics automatically. Specifically, it is deeply linked with Security Command Centre Enterprise, which is google cloud solution for managing risks and ensuring security across many clouds. It is possible to detect high-value assets with the assistance of the risk engine that is included in Security Command Centre. Additionally, it can analyse posture misconfigurations and vulnerabilities in your databases and simulate real-world attack scenarios.
You will be able to more effectively manage risk and protect the data that drives your business, analytics, and artificial intelligence workloads if you have access to deep insights for Microsoft Cloud Storage buckets.

The Vital Link: How Communication Safeguards Our Wellbeing
From the intricate coordination of surgeons in an operating room to the simple act of asking a neighbor for directions, communication forms the cornerstone of safety in every facet of life. While seemingly mundane, our ability to share information, express concerns, and collaborate effectively creates a powerful shield against potential harm.
This article delves into the multifaceted ways communication underpins safety, exploring real-life examples and delving into the science behind this crucial connection.
The Scaffolding of Safety: Communication in Action
1. Collaborative Communication:
Imagine a construction site bustling with activity. Workers operate heavy machinery, navigate precarious heights, and work alongside various materials. In this scenario, clear, concise communication becomes the lifeblood of safety.
Job Briefings: Before commencing work, teams gather for briefings. Leaders outline the project, identify potential hazards like falling objects or electrical hazards, and emphasize safety measures. This collaborative exchange ensures everyone is aware of the risks and takes necessary precautions.
Spotters and Signals: When operating heavy machinery like cranes or forklifts, clear communication between the operator and a spotter is crucial. Hand signals, voice commands, and radio communication ensure awareness of blind spots, potential hazards, and safe maneuvering.
2. Communication as Self-Awareness:
Safety doesn't solely depend on interacting with others. It also involves a dialogue we have with ourselves.
Job Safety Analysis (JSA): This crucial practice involves individuals outlining the steps involved in their tasks, identifying potential hazards associated with each step, and implementing control measures to mitigate those risks. By meticulously filling out a JSA, individuals are essentially engaging in self-communication, actively analyzing risks and planning for safe execution.
Pre-task Checklists: Similar to JSAs, checklists act as prompts for self-communication. By following a checklist, individuals are prompted to check equipment, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and their own physical and mental state before undertaking potentially risky tasks. This self-communication ensures readiness and adherence to safety protocols.
3. Communication in Crisis Situations:
In emergencies, the ability to communicate effectively can be life-saving.
Emergency Response Protocols: Clear communication protocols are vital during emergencies, ensuring timely and coordinated responses. Whether it's a fire drill at school or a disaster response plan in a workplace, established communication channels guide individuals on what to do, whom to contact, and how to report emergencies.
Providing First Aid: Even basic first aid requires communication. Asking about allergies and medical conditions, assessing the situation, and communicating with medical professionals are crucial steps in ensuring effective care.
4. Fostering a Culture of Safety:
Effective communication goes beyond just conveying instructions. It involves fostering a culture of safety where individuals feel empowered to speak up and voice concerns without fear of judgment or retribution.
Open Communication Channels: Organizations must establish mechanisms for open communication, such as anonymous reporting systems or suggestion boxes. This encourages individuals to report unsafe practices, near misses, and potential hazards without fear of repercussions.
Active Listening and Feedback: Leaders play a crucial role in promoting open communication by actively listening to concerns and implementing safety improvements based on feedback. This collaborative approach strengthens the safety culture and encourages everyone to participate in creating a safe environment.
The Science Behind the Connection: Communication and the Brain
Beyond practical application, research sheds light on the neurological basis of the communication-safety link. Studies have shown that:
Effective communication activates various brain regions responsible for planning, decision-making, and risk assessment. This neural activity enhances situational awareness and facilitates safe choices.
Open communication fosters trust and collaboration, which are crucial for building strong social connections. These connections reduce stress and anxiety, which can potentially impair judgment and reaction time in risky situations.
Bridging the Gaps: Communication Challenges in Safety
While the power of communication in safeguarding wellbeing is undeniable, challenges persist:
Language Barriers: Cultural differences and language barriers can hinder clear communication, leading to misunderstandings and potential safety hazards. Implementing multilingual training and communication protocols can mitigate this risk.
Active Listening: Communication isn't just about speaking but also about active listening. This involves paying attention, understanding the message, and seeking clarification if needed. Failure to actively listen can lead to missed information and safety lapses.
Overcoming Communication Apprehension: Some individuals experience apprehension when communicating, especially when reporting safety concerns. Creating a safe and supportive environment, fostering open communication, and offering communication skills training can empower individuals to overcome these anxieties.
Building a Culture of Communication and Safety
Creating a robust safety culture necessitates a multi-pronged approach:
Invest in Communication Skills Training: Equipping individuals with essential communication skills, such as active listening, assertive communication, and conflict resolution, strengthens the foundation of safety.
Promote Open Communication: Encourage open communication by implementing anonymous reporting systems, dedicated listening sessions with leadership, and clearly defined channels for raising safety concerns.
Lead by Example: Leaders set the tone for the safety culture. Demonstrating open communication, actively listening to concerns, and taking prompt action based on feedback fosters trust and encourages participation from all levels.
Celebrate Safety Communication Success Stories: Recognizing individuals who proactively communicate safety concerns, offer suggestions for improvement, or effectively intervene in potentially risky situations reinforces the importance of communication and motivates others to follow suit.
Continuously Review and Update Protocols: As circumstances and risks evolve, safety protocols and communication strategies need to adapt accordingly. Regularly review and update protocols, training programs, and communication channels to ensure effectiveness.
In conclusion, communication is not just about exchanging information; it's the cornerstone of creating a safety net that protects us in all aspects of life. By fostering open communication, actively listening, and building a culture of safety, we can empower individuals to participate actively in safeguarding their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others. By strengthening the link between communication and safety, we build a future where everyone can thrive in a safe and healthy environment.

New research project aims to minimise pre-hospital medication errors for children
When emergencies occur in which children’s lives are at risk, it is of critical importance for paramedics to think – and move – quickly. However, the extremely urgent and fast-paced nature of such situations can pose considerable challenges to medical professionals’ efforts to achieve consistent dosage calculation competency.
With these challenges in mind, researchers from multiple disciplines have come together from such institutions as Western Michigan University, Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine (WMed), and the University of Michigan, with a view to creating a head-mounted display application, using Microsoft HoloLens, to make paramedics’ lives easier in these situations.
Drawing upon the functionality of Microsoft HoloLens for the purposes of dosage calculation competency
At a time when there continues to be much talk about the potential benefits that mixed-reality headsets could bring across a wide range of fields, it is fascinating to read about this latest project that could be so instrumental in improving prehospital care for young patients.
The project bears the title, “Augmenting the On-scene Medic (ATOM): Development of a head-mounted display application to reduce prehospital pediatric medication errors”. It commenced in April 2023, and is expected to run until March 2026.
The team is putting in place the foundations for a new technology that could make an incalculable difference to young lives, supported by a $1.37 million grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
In the words of principal investigator for the project, Dr John Hoyle: “We’re going to use the functionality of the HoloLens to read drug vials and double-check doses pulled up in syringes, in addition to helping paramedics obtain a patient’s weight and calculating the correct drug dose for a patient. This has never been tried before.”
High error rates have been observed in cases of drugs administered to children
The statistics tell their own story about the potential importance of this project. Despite critical paediatric cases accounting for just 1% to 3% of paramedic emergency encounters, studies indicate a 31% error rate in all medication administered by EMS to children. In the case of midazolam and fentanyl, there are even higher rates of 61% and 35% respectively.
Dr Hoyle, who is also WMed’s assistant dean for simulation, and a professor in the departments of emergency medicine and paediatric and adolescent medicine, said that previous attempts to reduce errors with medication dosing had been unsuccessful. He added that already-available cognitive aids for paramedics had not entirely addressed the root causes of such mistakes.
He continued: “This is a difficult process for paramedics because they don’t get large amounts of paediatric training and the encounters in the field are rare so they have limited experience. This new technology has the chance to disrupt the high rates of paediatric dosage errors and finally bring those numbers down.”
A highly capable team has been put together for the project
With other members of the ATOM team including Western Drs Tycho Fredericks, Guan Yue Hong, and Autumn Edwards, and University of Michigan Drs Prashant Mahajan and Vitaliy Popov, there are high hopes for the pioneering study.
The team is set to spend the coming year gathering background information and developing the HoloLens application. In the second year of the grant, it is anticipated that pilot testing of the application will take place, followed in the third year by a randomised controlled trial across six cities in Michigan.
If everything goes well with the above processes, it is hoped that the application could be available for distribution by as soon as 2027.
With dosage calculation competency being such an ever-present priority for medical practitioners, it is crucial to consider every possible resource that could help make this a reality. To find out more about how the renowned safeMedicate suite of programs can contribute to competency in safe medication practice, please do not hesitate to contact us.
