Imagine Lucifer wearing Jess's face as he guilts Sam in the cage. Petting Sam's hair sweetly while he watches her bleeding out in front of him. Sam would get to hold her and say he's sorry, but still can't save her as she dies over and over in his arms.

Things I Wish Supernatural Gave Us But Didn't...

Stanford Era Sam flashbacks that involved little snippets of Jessica and him. Jessica was hardly in four episodes but I always felt Sam and her were the best couple. Even Eileen didn't come close to that.

Sam Winchester riding a motorcycle. Have you seen Jared on a motorcycle? If not I urge you to watch Friday the 13th and Christmas Cottage (yes, that Hallmark movie). I just needed one scene where Sam hops on a motorcycle and saves the day. Dean's hella proud of his badass Sammy but ofcourse he'd never say it to his face.

Sam's Jelly Bracelet origin story. I have already made a post wondering why it never had a backstory. So damn sad.

Demon Dean feeding Sam his demon blood. Wouldn't that be the bitch of all ironies?

More of Sam and Mary moments. I'm so pissed that even after Mary was resurrected, it still remained about Dean and her. The only good thing we got was "For me, having you here fills in the biggest blank." We needed more of that!

Sam + side character bonds. Sammy never got to have deeper bonds outside of Dean. Jody, Claire, Cas, Pamela, Jo, Ellen, Charlie, they all were made to bond with Dean. Why? Dean, stop hoarding people, you already have Sam!

Sam's psychic powers/visions disappeared after S5. Imagine working with Rowena would have unlocked those powers! Sam with powers was hot.

More of Dean apologizing to Sam because Dean has treated Sam like shit and that ain't acceptable.

Sam + pet/animal interaction. Have you seen Jared with animals? It's straight from cutieland. Remember Bones, the dog Sam adopted when ran off on his own? Riot, the dog he hit? Or that familiar dog who turned into a woman? Or the old dog who wouldn't talk to Dog Dean if Sam didn't scratch her belly? Ok, on hindsight they did give us this but it wouldn't hurt to have more of this. Right? Also, why didn't Sam and Scooby have more interaction in Scoobynatural? Sam loves dogs!

Sam taking a shower. How TF did we not have that? Just Sam standing under a shower stream, head hung low, shoulders heavy with the weight of whatever trauma he was suffering with at that time. The steam rising from his wet skin. Strands of hair curtaining his face. How did we not have this glorious moment?

Maybe I’m the odd one out here but What is and What Should Never Be always absolutely destroys me. I weep for almost the entire episode.

Dean has a home. He has someone who loves him. His life is normal and safe. And I cry.

The way he looks at Mary when he sees her for the first time. The way he nearly crumbles when she says “I told you angels were watching over you”. And then he hugs her with everything he has. He’s so happy to be back with him mom, back in his childhood home. His mom makes him lunch and it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him. He gets to mow the lawn like a normal person. The trunk of his car isn’t full of weapons. He’s just ordinary, and he’s so happy about it. So I cry.

And the way he hugs Jess? He only ever met the girl once but he knows how much she means to Sam. And he knows that losing her almost killed his brother. And so he hugs her as tight as he can, because he’s so thrilled that she’s alive and Sam is happy. And I cry.

But what also kills me is the way that Sam and his mom talk about Dean. They’re always asking if he’s been drinking. They’re suspicious of all of his actions and his affections. Maybe the version of Dean from this life wasn’t exactly on the straight and narrow, but they talk about him like he’s a deadbeat. So I cry.

Jesus Christ, and when Dean goes to talk to his dad at the cemetery?

“It's like my old life is… is coming after me or something. Like it like it doesn't want me to be happy. Course I know what you'd say. Well, not the you that played softball but... "So go hunt the Djinn. He put you here, it can put you back. Your happiness for all those people's lives, no contest. Right?" But why? Why is it my job to save these people? Why do I have to be some kind of hero? What about us, huh? What, Mom's not supposed to live her life? Sammy's not supposed to get married? Why do we have to sacrifice everything, Dad?”

He doesn’t say “why can’t I have the life I want?” Sure, he asks why he has to be a hero. But he makes it more about Sam and his mom. Because he wants them to have the lives they deserve. And this moment just gives us another look at what a bastard John was. Dean knew how dismissive and rude John would be. He knew that John would never choose his own son’s happiness over the lives of strangers. And he’d probably scream at Dean for even considering the “selfish” option. The way Dean says that his old life doesn’t want him to be happy also kills me. Because it’s like, no matter where he goes or what he does, he’s destined for misery. So I sob.

And so Dean goes to hunt the Djinn. He chooses the lives of others over everything, like he always does. And he realizes his new life isn’t real. He realizes he’s been unconscious this entire time, and that Jess is dead. His mom is dead. Carmen doesn’t really exist. And I cry.

So he’s ready to kill himself, but the way that his family tries to convince him to stay?

Oh my god. Spiegel im Spiegel starts playing, and Sam asks “why’d you have to keep digging?”

Mary tells him to put the knife down. She says it doesn’t matter that this life isn’t real, it’s still better than anything he had before. And that yeah, in real life, he will die in a few days. But it will feel like years. And there will be “No more pain. Or fear. Just love and comfort. And safety,” none of which Dean has in his real life

But Dean still chooses to return to his life, because he cares more about our saving people than he does about his own happiness.

And he tells Sam about the fake life the djinn created for him. About how Sam was happy with Jess. And their mom was going to have grandchildren. Sam commends him for having the strength to fight it, to leave it behind. And Dean says, “But I wanted to stay. I wanted to stay so bad. I mean, ever since Dad... all I c– all I can think about is how much this job's cost us. We've lost so much. We've... sacrificed so much.”

and it’s like, damn. Why can’t Dean ever be truly happy? Cause even in this “happy” version of his life, everything was tinged with pain and sadness and grief. And I just wish he could get a break. So I cry and cry and cry and cry.

What spawned that ask was me stumbling across a Reddit about how Sam should’ve told Jess the truth, and that one post about how Jess didn’t really know him, but the story sounds insane without proof and uh, it wouldn’t have saved her anyways since the actual threat was possessed!Brady, in which Sam didn’t pick up the signs because a) they rarely encountered demons before the show started so he wouldn’t have realized b) they clearly didn’t know all the signs of possession since it is canon Azazel had demons watching Sam that nobody picked up on what with Lucifer’s reveal being a genuine shock to Sam unless John saw demons around his son and exorcised them without ever once telling Sam about the demons carefully positioned in his life. And I hate to break it to some people, but you can know someone without knowing absolutely every thing about them. Sam’s capable of giving the broad details of his life and who he is, and I’m sure he said something about why his family never visited and he never went to them because he was functionally disowned, without getting into hunting. Jess isn’t surprised when Sam says John’s probably drunk and lost track of time, she knew something

anon, you are so right. i have nothing to add, except that i like you highlighting that it's not like he told her nothing about himself and his past and his family, because yeah. i mean, they were living together, she had to have had some insight into sam and his life, even if it was a somewhat sanitized version.

Ok, I ranted about this in the notes of another post, but it deserves its own rant.

This:

is one of the stupidest things Sam has ever said.

He knows Dean is a hunter. He knows Dean wouldn't break into his house in the middle of the night for funsies - after all, he hasn't done it in the last 4 years. He should be thinking "Is there a monster in my building? Is that why Dean's here?" He also knows that he's been lying to Jess and she doesn't know anything about his past life. He hasn't had a chance to tell Dean to not mention hunting in front of her. Saying that sentence could have been interpreted by Dean as "I've told Jess everything about hunting, go ahead with all the gritty details."

So whhhhhyyyyy would Sam be all "No, my girlfriend should stay and listen to my loose cannon brother"?!

It's performative and dumb. Sam is a better liar than this!

He needs affection, not just hugs and kisses, he needs to feel cared for in ways his family never gave him.

Jess would cut his hair for him when money was tight, and he liked the intimacy of it so much that he didn't let anyone else cut it, especially after she died.

Sam had a mixed relationship with religion in college. The more he prayed and read, the more he felt inadequate and dirty. Even without prayer, he felt that way, so he just buried it, thinking it's normal and that it'll get better with age.

Sam tries not to be clingy, and it works, but the consistency and routine of sleeping in the same bed, at the same time, with another person that was always there, it gave him security and he got angry about it, feeling like he was robbed of this feeling as a kid.

He envied Dean. He was good at everything, and he didn't seem to want the softer things that Sam ached for. It's not fair. In college, his envy turned to indifference, it was his choice to stay anyway.

Sam was always scaring Jess with how he seemed to appear out of thin air. Growing up on rickety floorboards taught him to be light-footed. Never wanting to wake John from his light sleep, many years as a hunter gave him light sleep and nightmares.

I know, I know.. not a lot of screen time.. maybe Eileen is the one or the good old wincest.. etc etc

But something about Sam and Jess felt so innocent, real and MFEO (their chemistry was spot on), I can't let it go. To me, Jess was Sam's one true love. I mourned her loss with Sam. Those brief grieving moments we see.. they wreck my heart 💔

I'm still bitter about not getting more Stanford Era glimpses. Would trade Amy Pond's story arc for it 😭😭😭

And you?? Which ship breaks your heart so much you can't help but ship it??
