The Overall Globe is awarded to the athlete with the most points from all competitions in the different disciplines of the Park & Pipe World Cup tour. Brookes earned a whopping seven podiums from a total of eight World Cup starts across Slopestyle and Big Air for a total of 500 points. “It’s been such a long season–to walk away with this is really special,” said Brookes. In February Brookes claimed her second consecutive big air Globe after amassing two wins and one third place finish from five World Cup contests. She also claim close to winning a third Crystal Globe finishing runner-up to New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, who won slopestyle gold at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games, in the Slopestyle, after the finals in the last Slopestyle World Cup were cancelled in Flachau, Austria, due to weather conditions. Brookes finished the season with 300 points, just 12 points behind Sadowski-Synnott. “Through The Gains Of Industry We Promote Art”
In the 18th century, Birmingham, whose early history was charted by William Hutton, became the ‘city of a thousand trades’ and ‘workshop of the world’.
After cycling to the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port two weeks ago, I thus decided to come to Millennium Point, Birmingham, to learn more about industry, and saw these, in chronological order.
(4-5) The Smethwick Engine, made in Birmingham at Matthew Boulton’s factory, Soho House, itself now a fine museum. The oldest working steam engine in the world, it was designed by James Watt and stood on the canal between here and Wolverhampton from 1779 to 1892. Since 2018 it has stood here; as I said, and as you can see, it is still working as living history.
The rolling mill engines (6) were made by an anon factory between 1820 and 1840, and used at the metal rolling mill Wychall Mill until 1940.(7) is a face plate lathe used at Soho (where the Smethwick Engine had been built) from around 1850 onwards.
The railway came to Birmingham in 1838 and in 1873 trams came along; there is a fine tram from 1911 here, but I couldn’t get a good picture of it so you’d need to go and see for yourself.
(The trams stoped in 1953 but there are ‘plans’ to bring back trams, alongside HS2 which is ‘planned’ to run very nearby; these are both dreadful ideas and I only mention them for the sake of completion; I hope they somehow can be stopped).
By this time Birmingham, under the leadership of Joseph Chamberlain as mayor from 1873 to 1876, harnessed industrial wealth (much of it made by Chamberlain and the men he appointed), and the ideas of the ‘civic gospel’ pioneered by George Dawson and his circle.
Birmingham was only formally recognised as a city in 1889 (the university was founded in 1909) but the recognition lagged well behind the fact that this had become what it is, the second city in England. (Manchester, are you listening?)
(8) is not a local lad but was made in 1904 at Fodens in Sandbach, Cheshire, along that almost-forgotten industrial zone stretching along the Trent and Mersey Canal; cycling through that area to the National Waterways Museum was one of the main inspirations for my coming to Thinktank. This engine came to Birmingham in 1924 and worked for the Children’s Hospital (which was set up in 1862).
Last, (9) the City of Birmingham; trains have been running here for 170 years, and I used one to get in and out of the city when I came. This engine ran from 1945 to 1964 and is now retired.
Since 2001, Millennium Point has stood here and is home to Thinktank, the science museum which replaced an earlier science museum that was in Birmingham from 1951 to 1997.
As well as the above there is a gallery for the Spitfire, which was designed in my home city of Stoke-on-Trent and built in Birmingham; please see my earlier post.
Thinktank is part of a young, diverse city whose universities (have to tell my girlfriend, a UOB graduate, that there’s more than one; Birmingham City University is based here) spearhead the city’s future. After visiting here we were in nearby Chinatown, where Chinese New Year was slightly subdued due to the STILL ongoing Covid pandemic.
(Please note; a lot of great things are here all in one place; while good for the visitor, this is bad for the photographer. I’d urge a visit here in person as the place is much better than the somewhat crammed photos make it look).
Here, until 28 March 2022, is Luke Jerram’s exhibition Gaia. I have followed this artist since he exhibited in my home city of Stoke-on-Trent in 2018 with the moon, and this is my second trip to the earth, which I’d seen at my alma mater, Keele University, when it was there in 2021.
It was humbling to look at the earth from above so that Europe, and the United Kingdom where I live, is certainly not the centre of the earth, and couldn’t even be seen from where we stood.
Stephen Hawking (RIP) said that “to confine ourselves to terrestrial matters would limit the human spirit” (and you can indeed explore outer space here, at the Planetarium) but one could spend a lifetime trying to understand just this one planet and only scratch the surface, though it is fun to try!

Developed under the project name Apex by the Rootes Group to take on the BMC Mini, though the Imp arrived 4 years later than the Mini. Powered by an all aluminium 875cc rear mounted engine . With versions badge engineered as Singer and Sunbeam. Rootes had been given a Government grant for a new assembly plant and a stake in a brand new Pressed Steel plant to be built in Linwood, Glasgow then an employment black spot. But production was beset with stoppages and costs incurred in producing the engine casting at Linwood then transporting them to Ryton, Coventry to be machined and assembled before transporting back to Linwood for to be put in the cars, a return journey of 600 miles. Despite these problems the Imp did prove popular, though not as much as the Mini and the extra cost made them barely profitable The Imp was an innovative car, and was the first mass-produced car with the engine block and cylinder head cast in aluminium. it used a space-saving rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout to allow as much luggage and passenger capacity as possible and a unique opening rear hatch to allow luggage to be put into the back seat rest. it was one of the earliest mass produced British cars to have an engine in the back and the first car to use a diaphragm spring clutch. The unorthodox small/light car was designed for the Rootes Group by Formula One driver Michael Parkes and Tim Fry. and gained a reputation as a successful rally car when Rosemary Smith won the Tulip Rally in 1965. This led the Rootes Group to produce a special rally conversion of the Imp under both the Hillman and Singer marques known as the Imp Rallye. The Imp was also successful in touring car racing when Bill McGovern won the British Saloon Car Championship in 1970, 1971 and 1972. The Imp continued in production following the Chrysler takeover of the Rootes Group in 1967 until 1976 selling just under half a million units in 13 years. PANDA CARS Not sure if this Hillman Imp was ever a Panda Car, but Imps were supplied to a number of Constabularies, during the roll out of Police Panda Car duties, with at one time over 300 Imps used in the role. The Panda car came about from August 1966 when the home office in an attempt to improve the use of man-power in Police Forces throughout the country, Enabling a Police Constable to cover a far wider area more effectively than was possible on foot or a bicycle. Manufacturers of small cars were asked a variety of models for evaluation, in the case of Rootes six Imps were submitted. Finished in Powder Blue they were painted in Panda car livery by the Service Workshop at Stoke, Coventry. The six cars were delivered to Newton Abbott Division of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary. The experiment began on March 1st, 1967, with the cars in use 24 hours a day manned by three one man crews of Police Officers, with their beat including Dartmoor. The cars were equipped with form of shovels, police signs, and fire extinguishers and the Police Constable driver was equipped with a personal radio set, in order to maintain contact with HQ. The cars maintenance was constantly monitored, and by the end of the experiment in August 1967, the cars had covered a total of 120,000 miles, receiving a favourable report and were recommended for service. Devon and Cornwall subsequently purchased Imps as Panda Cars, as did Kent, Surrey, Northumberland, Durham, Somerset, Norfolk, York and many Scottish constabularies. Code name ADO16 the BMC 1100/1300 range went on to become the groups best selling vehicle. First launch via the Morris 1100 in August 1962 and followed the twin carburettor MG, and the Vanden Plas in October 1962 and the Austin 1100 in August 1963 with later additions of the Wolseley 1100 and Riley Kestrel. An Estate version followed in 1966.. The Mark 1 ran from (1962-67) and were distinctive for their use of Hydrolastic suspension, and the marketing heavily promoted the spacious cabin, compared to rival makes, created by the use of the transversely mounted BMC A series engine. The Mark 1 was only available as a four door in the UK although certain overseas markets did receive a two door version. After an eighteen year development the DS was unveiled at the 1955 Paris Motorshow, styled by Italian sculptor and industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni it had an aerodynamic body design and innovative technology, including hydro pneumatic self levelling suspension. Initially deemed expensive the DS was joined by a cheaper less technical ID model in 1957. The DS was third in the 1999 Car of the Century and during it's twenty year production sold nearly 1.5 million. In 1962 the DS received a more streamlined nose to increase the aerodynamic efficiency, still retaining the the round head lights. In 1967 a second restyle brought in the streamlined covered lights on this example. The design had a pair of lights under each cover, the inner set swivelled with the steering wheel to allow drivers to see hazards on turns, this was not allowed in the USA at the time so a version with four exposed fixed head lamps was made for the US market. In 1965 a luxury upgrade, the DS Pallas (after Greek goddess Pallas), was introduced. This included comfort features such as better noise insulation, a more luxurious (and optional leather) upholstery and external trim embellishments.
