Thank you so much for following along with Les Mis Letters this year! Even if you haven’t yet finished the entire book, I wanted to congratulate you on making it to the end of 2024. Reading Les Miserables is a massive undertaking, and I’m glad you joined in to make the attempt— whether you stopped reading back in Digne or made it all the way to the tragic ending in the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
Running this online book club means a lot to me. This subscription project is a labor of love that takes a lot of time to put together. Manually setting up 365 scheduled emails without any way to automate the process, administrating a Discord server, and running various social media accounts, all take countless hours of work. However, it’s all worth it to help people find motivation to read or reread my favorite novel– and to have great conversations with the fun, kind, readers who have been following along!
I wanted to send a special thank you to the readers in the Les Mis Letters discord server, whose insightful conversations and goofy baloney helped make 2024 a great year for this readalong. It’s been lovely to make new internet friends through this book club.

Oh my gosh, thank you for saying this! When I first published the TXT skinny dipping story and the TXT public shower masturbation story I didn't think anyone would enjoy them, because they were kind of long with no actual sex (well, the shower one does have gay sex). They also never got that many likes compared to other stories.

Let me reflect on the two ideas in your request:

New on Story Finder: 🗨️ Author Comments on Requests
On the subject of requests, I want to find a way to make it clearer to you what requests others have sent in and what the status of your requests are. The list is simply too long, and even stories I'm writing today are months away from being published, so it can't be easy to understand what is coming, what I'm working on at the moment, and which requests I choose to ignore for now despite including them on my "maybe in the future" list (sorry that I can't respond to everything immediately).
Unless you're new here you already know about my external website Story Finder and the requests page on there. At least with that page you know that I've seen your request and can get a vague idea of what is happening to it. But because the list is long it can be hard to find specific ones (though there is a search feature in case you haven't noticed).
One idea I had recently was to add an "Author Comment" section to some requests. I did this a few days ago. It's basically just me adding a comment with my thoughts on the request, and so far I've only skimmed through the list and commented on those I really do want to make something of (that doesn't mean a lack of a comment means I won't do anything with it ever).
I just know I'll suck at keeping the comments up to date though. I fear it's not a viable long-term solution to making the status of requests clearer to you. I might completely remake the page one day, adding sections and automating things better to make it less time consuming for me to manage.
Stay tuned for that, and if you're curious, check out the comments I just added before I remove them (which I might if they prove too much to maintain) ☺️
Oh, and one more thing: Never apologize for too many requests 😅 I love receiving every single one! You never know what sticks, and even though the list of unresponded requests has grown out of control and I'll never catch up, many up-coming stories are responses to requests – both new and old ones.

Worst Interview Ever
Pitched by tech companies as a cost-efficient means of automating a laborious screening process typically done by an HR representative or recruiter, this A.I. software has the capability to “interview” hundreds of candidates, whom it can then recommend for further interviews with actual human beings. But for those on the other side of these chats, the experience of auditioning for a computer can feel somewhat surreal—and leave a rather unpleasant impression of a potential employer.

The shift to A.I. among human resources sectors is real. Earlier this month, the CEO of IBM confirmed that the company had laid off “a couple hundred” HR workers and replaced them with A.I. agents. A recent survey of 500 HR professionals also found that almost three-quarters of them believe they’re adopting the technology more quickly than other departments. Despite this, HR remains among the fastest-growing sectors in the U.S., with the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting an 8 percent growth by 2033. According to the HR Digestmagazine, although A.I. can be used in this field to automate “an unnecessary amount of manual work,” like payroll management and vacation requests, it can’t yet “oversee the human section” or company culture. Still, amid concerns that the technology may develop algorithmic biases in hiring, Peditto believes that recruiters should be worried. “Good recruiters are more than just box-checkers and 15-minute screeners,” he said. “But for the people who this is sort of all they do, that can be scary, especially those early in their careers.”
The recruiters that are using A.I. are, in one sense, leveling the playing field. After all, some applicants, like Mayfield Phillips, who��ve been interviewed by A.I. bots have themselves used A.I. to boost their chances of landing a job by receiving help in polishing their résumés or tailoring cover letters. (You can even use the tech to practice your answers in mock interviews—a feature highlighted by Google in a recent Super Bowl ad—or have it listen to your job interview in real time and secretly suggest responses.) But Phillips, a 55-year-old IT project manager in New York, said he still found his experience this week of being interviewed by an A.I. chatbot, one also made by Apriora, to be profoundly surreal. Although he knew in advance he’d be conversing with an A.I. program that would listen to his verbal answers and ask him questions via text, he still had to schedule a time to chat with “Alex” (whose avatar appeared as a white woman with brown hair), and a preplanned interview had to be postponed due to technical difficulties the A.I. was experiencing. Phillips said he was also particularly frustrated and unimpressed after the A.I. was unable to answer a question he posed about what success might look like in the position.

Calif. man pleads guilty to Ponzi scheme after trying to evade FBI in a submarine

A Northern California man pleaded guilty Thursday to a Ponzi-like fraud scheme, following his arrest in 2020 where he tried to escape the FBI using a submarine in Shasta Lake, officials said.
Matthew Piercey, a 48-year-old from Palo Cedro, admitted to wire fraud, money laundering and witness tampering in the $35 million investment fraud scheme that occurred from July 2015 to August 2020, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of California said in a news release.
In the operation, Piercey scammed investors by making false statements under the guise of two investment companies, Family Wealth Legacy and Zolla, the attorney’s office said. Piercey lied to investors about an “Upvesting Fund,” which was supposedly a successful “automated algorithmic trading fund.”
Piercey used investor money to pay other investors, the attorney’s office said, and eventually used a chiropractor business in Redding to conceal his operation and money. He gained $35 million in investment funds but paid investors only $8.8 million over the course of the scheme and spent the rest of the money on personal and business expenses, such as two residential properties and paying a criminal defense firm.
Some people invested their “life savings” in Piercey’s companies, FBI Sacramento Special Agent in Charge Sid Patel said in the news release.
Piercey eventually realized he was under investigation and tried to discourage investors and witnesses from speaking out in court, the attorney’s office said. This slowed down the court process as Piercey illegally transferred $775,000 from investors into one of his bank accounts.
When authorities tracked Piercey down on Nov. 16, 2020, and attempted to arrest him, he led them on a vehicle chase through nearby neighborhoods and on a highway, the attorney’s office said. Piercey then left his vehicle and tried to escape into Shasta Lake using an “underwater submersible device,” hiding underwater for about 20 minutes before being taken into custody.
While in jail, Piercey used a coded language to speak with visitors, the attorney’s office said, directing them to a U-Haul storage locker in Redding he had rented under a fake name. When the FBI searched the locker, agents found a wig and 31,000 in Swiss francs (around $37,000).
Piercey is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 4 and could face up to 20 years in prison for each count of fraud and at least $1 million in fines.
