#it's like the Shirley Temple dolls with glowing green eyes because they have trace amounts of uranium in them to enhance the color #as they aged the subtle green became a terrifying intense green #check out pictures it's really interesting (via chibispaz)
So, sometimes dolls will have eyes that discolor. (Either due to being poorly stored - in hot environments, for example - or just because they kind of sucked to begin with and time passed.)
Life of Faith was a "Christian alternative" to American Girl in the early 00s. (These spring up from time to time. Most of them only last a few years with a very niche market. I think, at the time, they had because people were flipping out about American Girl partnering with Girls Inc to fund after-school science programs and stuff, because Girls Inc was - according to the conservatives - "A pro-abortion, pro-lesbian organization".) The dolls were based around the Elsie Dinsmore books and it's all . . . big fluffy dresses on a plantation in the antebellum South. With all that that entails.
It was pretty fucking bad.
With that in mind, this is perhaps the funniest toy defect I have ever seen.

#Yes.#and the worst part for me the really worst part#is that I'm around people who like? They comment on how beautiful it is? #Oh what a beautiful day. what beautiful weather! #and it's easier to just say yeah #but it's like don't you feel the death in the air?? #can't we just be honest about the death in the air? #why are you happy? why do I have to pretend to be happy? #I suppose that I really should just enjoy the weather. since not enjoying it has no benefit to me. but how could I? how could any of you? #or every time people are like Oh man what's going on what's up with this weather like hello??? #why are we doing this song and dance? what do you mean? what's up? we're all slowly dying together. that's what's up. #didn't you catch the memo? we're slowly dying and we just elected a leader who will wreck our efforts to mitigate it as much as possible #can we at least stop acting like we need to be surprised this is just the weather now #can we stop acting pleased at nice weather this is just the weather now (via astrangergivingthestrangewelcome)
it is november, and yesterday it felt like it was supposed to be snowing. in boston, november used a winter month, not a fall month. it is supposed to be chilly; rarely capping over 45F. it is a sweater-and-jacket month. it is a "maybe a scarf too" month. in my childhood, november meant blizzards and sleet.
it did not snow. tomorrow the weather predicts a high of 76.
i have spent so many years of my life studying the longterm possibilities of climate change - the culmination of capitalism wreaking havoc on the bodies of people, animals, plants - but every so often i am still shocked by something small and personal.
in a hundred years, when someone goes outside in boston - will they know the feeling of "snow in the air"?
i know it's a learned feeling, a sensation that maybe only longterm experience can teach. a few years ago, i was walking with my friend who had just moved up from the south. i said it smells like snow and she gave me this look like - what the fuck. i said it feels like snow too, which didn't help. she looked up to the bright blue sky and then back at me and then back at the sky. 12 hours later, we had 3 inches. you can just tell if it's going to snow.
except i can't tell, anymore. i stand outside in a tee shirt and watch my dog dance around a lake. we're in a drought and the skin of the water has peeled back twenty meters. the lake is tamed, quiet, puddlelike and sour. my pokemon go app warns there's a weather condition in my area.
my dog gets too hot from running and sits in the water and i want to laugh about his long frame and how awkwardly he sits - and i can't. some simian part of my brain is scratching the walls. it was supposed to snow. it was supposed to snow, but now it's warm instead.
during the last full solar eclipse, the dogs and the birds and the crickets went crazy under utter darkness. we laughed at them then, promising it will all be okay in a moment. but some part of me is still locked in that long night: some animal sensation.
something is wrong, my body says. i can't afford eggs or rent. i go outside to watch a sunset and listen to birdsong. i don't bring a jacket. allergies are killing me this season, allergies i didn't have as a kid. everyone comments that halloween has started to feel strange, offkilter. that it's hard having "holiday cheer." my body thinks it's april, and then it thinks we're in september, and then june.
something is terribly wrong, she whispers. go outside. it is supposed to be snowing.

I feel like you and I got off on the wrong arm.
“They’re a weird, twisted family. Jinx is the daughter, and Sevika’s the weird aunt? They’re a weird unit, and there’s obviously a lot of jealousy and competition. But I do think that they have more in common than they have differences. That’s actually a really exciting relationship to come out of the second season.” — Ella Purnell (voice actor of Jinx)

#skdjfghdj middle europe losing their white winters is NOT us overcoming some kind of eurocentric idea of how the world is supposed to be #it's a very significant symptom of climate crisis and it SHOULD worry us and it should worry you too #also ''anglocentric even within europe'' what are u on about even #snow in december - sometimes even starting in late november - was *normal* even in middle/south germany up until about a dozen years ago #and going from temperatures around or below zero in december to literally ten degrees above zero is TERRIFYING #it's fucking with our environment and nature in entirely new ways #are u aware many plants here *need* weeks of cold and frost to sprout? #are u aware that our invertebrate pest populations are going to explode bc suddenly the adults from the previous year *aren't* freezing dea #are u aware that this is not ''who's got the ~worse~ winters'' but rather #''hey we're experiencing severe symptoms of a climate crisis and it's WORRYING'' #and your only reaction is 'ugh can u drop your eurocentrism? these are ~normal~ environmental happenings here' WELL FOR US HERE THEY'RE NOT #(you know what actually? australian wildfires are *also* a very -centric phenomenon #but the strong increase of them happening should STILL be worrying people even outside of australia) (via welter-of-thoughts)
Christmas as a cultural icon is starting to get really dystopian in a climate sense, december has historically been a time of year in which there would be snow in a significant portion of europe and north america, and the fact that its not even icy this time of year and all the christmas songs and decorations reference a time of year that will likely never exist in the same way again in my life time is so strange.

#and then they start a riot by going hey. Riot! #And then u find out ur son is not only dating but has somehow bagged the most competent woman in the world #And THEN the fire kingdom princess tries to kill you and dump you into boiling water #Also your son? The boy you had to leave behind? The boy who had to leave you behind? #He's a warrior grown and has a sword now #But it all works out quick pretend you have it together enough for a badass exit line (via chucktaylorupset)
I don't think I've seen anybody talk about how absolutely insane The Boiling Rock is from Hakoda's perspective.
Imagine getting captured, and your son tells you that you won't be apart for too long. That's sweet, but obviously your son has no resources to spare for organizing a breakout. You hope that the Avatar can defeat the Fire Lord soon - that's the earliest time you could hope to be rescued.
You get put into a temporary holding facility until the guards can sort out who is who. After a while, they put you on a prisoner transport to the Boiling Rock. Your captors try to intimidate you by telling you that it's the highest security prison in the Fire Nation, probably the whole world. It's far away from the capital.
You arrive at the Boiling Rock. It really is in the middle of a boiling lake. There's only one way in or out, and it's a gondola that takes you above the boiling lake. You meet the warden. They take you to your cell. You settle down to wait for the end of the war.
And 15 minutes later Sokka comes in like "hey dad I'm here I got the prince of the Fire Nation and an Earth Kingdom ninja leader gf ok let's go I'm busting you out"

there-will-always-be-blood May 3: No offence but whoever wrote this isn't a great liar themselves. Except the four types of liars. That one is bang on, the others are a bit obvious red flags any good liar would cover?
how do you write a liar?
How to Write Liars Believably
Language
The motive of every goal is the make the lie seem plausible while taking blame off the speaker, so liars will often project what they say to a third party: "Katie said that..."
Referring to third parties as "they" rather than he or she
In the case of a deliberate lie prepped beforehand, there will be an overuse of specific names (rather than pronouns) as the speaker tries to get the details right.
Overuse of non-committal words like "something may have happened"
Masking or obscuring facts like "to the best of my knowledge" and “it is extremely unlikely," etc.
Avoiding answers to specific, pressing questions
Voice
There's isn't a set tone/speed/style of speaking, but your character's speech patten will differ from his normal one.
People tend to speak faster when they're nervous and are not used to lying.
Body Language
Covering their mouth
Constantly touching their nose
fidgeting, squirming or breaking eye contact
turning away, blinking faster, or clutching a comfort object like a cushion as they speak
nostril flaring, rapid shallow breathing or slow deep breaths, lip biting, contracting, sitting on your hands, or drumming your fingers.
Highly-trained liars have mastered the art of compensation by freezing their bodies and looking at you straight in the eye.
Trained liars can also be experts in the art of looking relaxed. They sit back, put their feet up on the table and hands behind their head.
For deliberate lies, the character may even carefully control his body language, as though his is actually putting on a show
The Four Types of Liars
Deceitful: those who lie to others about facts
2. Delusional: those who lie to themselves about facts
3. Duplicitious: those who lie to others about their values
Lying about values can be even more corrosive to relationships than lying about facts.
4. Demoralized: those who lie to themselves about their values
Additional Notes
Genuine smiles or laughs are hard to fake
Exaggerations of words (that would normally not be emphasized) or exaggerated body language
Many savvy detectives ask suspects to tell the story in reverse or non-linear fashion to expose a lie. They often ask unexpected, or seemingly irrelevant questions to throw suspects off track.
