City Councilman Dupré Kelly (January 14, 1971) was born and raised in Newark. He became the first platinum-selling Hip Hop artist in the US to win elected office.

He has been addressing the blight and uncleanliness by partnering with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Department of Sanitation for the Sidewalk Soldiers program. Once in office, he will propose to have incentives that will create employment for residents of the community to assist in cleaning their neighborhoods.

He has received numerous awards and acknowledgments from the Newark Public Schools, as well as community organizations. He’s received awards and acknowledgments from several New Jersey cities such as Irvington, Paterson, East Orange, Newark, and the New Jersey State Senate & Congress. “Religion is not the only way to view life, and its problems – and to offer some program for their resolution” – John Lofland.

John Lofland: “It seems likely that there were very few converts … for the simple reason that people have a number of conventional and readily available alternative ways of defining and coping with their problems. By this I mean that they have alternative perspectives, or rhetorics, that specify the nature and sources of problems and offer some program for their resolution. There are many such alternatives in modern society, but I shall briefly describe three particular types: the psychiatric, the political and the religious. In the first the origin of problems is typically traced to the psyche, and the manipulation of the self is advocated as a resolution to problems. Political solutions, mainly radical, locate the sources of problems in the social structure and advocate its reorganisation as a solution. The religious perspective tends to see both sources and solutions to difficulties as emanating from an unseen, and in principle, and unseeable realm.

The first two rhetorics are both secular and are the most often used in contemporary society.”

John Lofland studied Young-oon Kim’s group in San Francisco from March 1962 to January 1963 with her formal agreement. During his research, for about 4 months he spent several nights every week with the group. In January 1963, Young-oon Kim said to him that she was tired of him playing the “studying the movement game”. She decided that he was unlikely to convert.

His book is a classic and a fascinating study of a new religion trying to establish itself, with observations on the process of recruitment.

Charnette Frederic, Irvington Council Member, Builds Bridges Through Education

Growing up in the quaint village of Cazale, Haiti, Charnette Frederic’s parents always put education first for their family. Later, when she gave birth to her son in Irvington, New Jersey, she sought to put his education needs first too. 

Little did Frederic know that would lead to her entering politics and then becoming the first Haitian-American woman elected to office in New Jersey. As a council member and second vice president in Irvington, Frederic now spends much of her time educating Haitian-Americans in Irvington about resources available. She also teaches city officials about the needs and power of her vibrant community.

“My biggest accomplishment as the only Haitian-American on the council has been to encourage people to work together for the betterment of our community,” said Frederic, 42. “You have immigrants coming in that I constantly try to support, especially with the language issue.”

Recently, Frederic’s efforts to drive voter turnout, reduce insurance burdens on taxi drivers and create an environmentally sustainable city have cemented her reputation as a bridge-builder. Particularly, between the immigrant community made up of mostly Haitian-Americans and city officials.

“She’s a dominant star in bringing people together,” said Irvington Mayor Tony Vauss. “She calls me on behalf of her constituents and she’s constantly connecting them with people in the administration through the different departments they need to be in contact with.”

Lessons in determination  

Frederic began developing knowledge of immigrants’ needs when she immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 17 from Cazale. Her mountain village, about 45 miles north of Port-au-Prince, is known for its Polish settlers. 

Growing up, Frederic’s family instilled a love of education at a young age, she said. Her parents, Marie Charite Orelien and Joseph Orelien, sent her to strict schools in Port-au-Prince where failing a class meant expulsion. That level of rigor taught Frederic the importance of determination, a trait she would carry with her when she moved to Irvington in 1999.

In the working-class township, Haitians make up about 14.1% of Irvington’s 54,233 residents. From that established enclave, Frederic faced new challenges — chiefly, completing her education.

“My dad did not like the Irvington school system and he made me apply to the community college, despite having limited English,” Frederic said. “Because I had excelled in math and science in Haiti, I received strong grades in both of these fields.”

And despite the language barrier, Frederic became a math tutor by her second semester at Essex County College. She earned an associate’s degree in biology and two years later, Frederic graduated from Rutgers University with a bachelor’s in biology and chemistry.  

Later, Frederic earned a master’s in health care administration from Seton Hall University, where she is now pursuing a doctorate in biochemistry. She began to use her scientific background to actively pursue making Irvington an environmentally-friendly city. 

While working toward her advanced degrees, Frederic also married Joseph Betissan Frederic and gave birth to her only son Ben. She also learned to navigate life as an immigrant, including becoming fluent in English and accessing various systems, offices and information.

It was after attending the Center for Women and Politics at Rutgers University that Frederic learned more about local government and its impact on citizens’ day-to-day lives, especially those of immigrant backgrounds. She decided to run for a board of education seat, in 2009 and 2010. Frederic was unsuccessful then, but did not rule out another run in the future.

“A friend on the council”

In 2012, an opportunity opened on the city council, and Frederic successfully ran. 

“I wanted to be the voice to help out other Haitians whose first stop was Irvington,” Frederic said. “I was able to change certain laws to give Haitian-Americans more opportunities and remind them that they have a friend on the council.”

Recently, when drivers with the Irvington Taxi Committee complained about insurance prices, Frederic helped amend an ordinance to lower their insurance rates. In the lead-up to the November elections, even though she was not on the ballot, Frederic encouraged the community to be civically engaged. She took to Haitian radio to instruct residents in Creole how to properly complete voting ballots.

“It’s so amazing when you can speak to someone in Creole and be able to use it to help others,” Frederic said. “It’s really important that we provide that kind of support by letting them know that it’s OK to feel welcome and it’s OK to speak Creole. [Being] able to connect with people is priceless.”

Through her eponymous nonprofit civic organization, Frederic also organizes a Haitian Independence Day celebration, brings Haitian-American artists to Irvington for Haitian Flag Day, and otherwise highlights the talent and creativity of Haitian-Americans.

“Anytime I’m holding an event, like a clothing drive, she is always there to support financially and brings other council members to our events,” said James Louis, who works with the Haitian-American Civic Association. “This is not just for me and the organization, but this is the testimony from everybody I’ve talked to within the community.”

Besides lifting up Haitian-Americans, Frederic has also focused on making Irvington part of the Sustainable Jersey program. In 2014, the city became bronze certified, a designation awarded to cities that implement sustainability measures, and she was named a Sustainability Hero.

Her current focus is on educating residents about the impact of lead paint on children and how to remediate such structures and promoting health and wellness in the township.

Balancing city council, her full-time job and a family can be overwhelming and she sometimes feels like giving up, Frederic said. But, remembering the residents in need renews her determination.

Meet Ro Khanna

Congressman Ro Khanna, 42, is a Representative of California’s 17th District in the 116th Congress. I was first elected to Congress in the 2016 general election, and am one of only six members of Congress who does not accept PAC contributions, continuing my efforts to keep politics and special interest money separate. I serve as a member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Committee on the Budget, and the Committee on Armed Services in Congress. In Congress, I serve as a strong voice for a progressive vision that promotes good jobs and wages for the 17th district and the United States of America. .

Following my mother’s example, I was a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Stanford University and an Adjunct Professor at Santa Clara Law School. Governor Jerry Brown appointed me to the California Workforce Development Board for the State of California, where I served as chair for the Advanced Manufacturing Committee. I also served on the Board of Directors of Planned Parenthood Mar Monte and have tutored local Irvington High School students in my spare time. My pro bono legal activity includes work with the Mississippi Center for Justice on several contractor fraud cases on behalf of Hurricane Katrina victims. I have been a strong advocate for local issues in our community. I have worked with Milpitas Mayor Jose Esteves to reduce odor from the Newby Landfill and to hold Republic accountable. I have also worked with Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor to make sure the San Francisco 49ers did not take over the Youth Soccer Park in Santa Clara. I have worked with environmentalists to stand up to Lehigh Cement Plant and insist that the plant be held to modern day envionmental standards. In 2009, President Obama appointed me to serve as Deputy Assistant Secretary at the U.S. Department of Commerce. I broke new ground when I organized clean technology trade missions and expanded the Green Embassy program, which allows American clean technology firms to showcase their products in our embassies overseas. I also served on the White House Business Council, working with both business and labor for policies that promote to bring back American manufacturing jobs. Under my leadership, American exports grew dramatically. I received a letter of commendation for my service from Frank Sanchez, Under Secretary for International Trade.

In 2009 and 2010, I took the lead on defending the rights of workers who were being laid off by New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) as the plant closed its doors in Fremont. I played a critical role in securing a $330,000 grant from the federal government for Fremont to find new uses for the abandoned auto plant, in addition to funds for job training programs to help the skilled workers who found themselves out of work and with nowhere to turn. My strong commitment to the United Auto Workers and the working families in the region is something that I bring to Congress as I advocate for a collaborative working relationship between organized labor and business leaders. After leaving the Commerce Department, I authored a book on the state of American manufacturing and how to keep it competitive in the global economy. Entrepreneurial Nation: Why Manufacturing is Still Key to America's Future has won widespread praise for its strategies to keep the best companies, jobs, and opportunities in America.

My committment to service is rooted in the belief that the American Dream that inspired his family should continue to inspire future generations. My commitment to public service was inspired early on by my grandfather, who told me stories about participating in Gandhi’s independence movement in India and spending several years in jail for promoting human rights. Somewhat serendipitously, I first became involved in politics while attending the University of Chicago, where he worked on the campaign of a little-known candidate for state Senate named Barack Obama. Later, I worked on Obama’s presidential campaign. In 2003, I ran a protest campaign for Congress in California against a Democratic incumbent who voted for George W. Bush’s decision to attack Iraq. Although I lost badly, I was one of the first anti-Iraq war campaigns in the nation. My principled stand was not about receiving political endorsements, or working within the establishment, but about standing up for my beliefs. Like so many families in our area, my parents immigrated to the United States—coming from India to seek opportunity and a better life for their children. I was born in Philadelphia in 1976, and learned the value of education and hard work from my parents. My father studied engineering at the University of Michigan; my mother was a substitute teacher. I benefited from a quality public school education and took out student loans to attend great universities, which I am still paying off today. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in economics from the University of Chicago, and received a law degree from Yale University.
