Hello Internet!
I’ve been working on a project that involves compiling a bunch of information on sewing and mending, so I’m putting it out to the world so that more people can see and benefit from it!
The best way I could figure to do this was to attach PDF links of my guides that I made, so sorry if there are technical issues with accessing them, I’m still trying to figure out how to attach them properly
This one goes over basic handsewing stitches and mending techniques
And if you know a bit about sewing and how to use a sewing machine, but are still figuring out different techniques and things, I’ve compiled a list of a variety of beginner friendly sewing projects, with instructions and pictures!
Hope this is helpful for someone!

Finally got the pattern pieces for my next dress cut out. It's been a little while since I've been able to do anything sewing wise and it feels amazing to get back into the thick of it.

the waistcoat I mentioned in my last sewing projects post! since this has a lot more moving parts and involved some more complex work than the shirts, this was something of a practice exercise, so I did it with a kinda cheap print from a quilting fabrics store. since I had a lot of fun with this I plan to make more in blue and red/gold fabrics that I have, which will hopefully, unlike the print, not leave little white marks everywhere a needle pokes through.
big note for next time is to try and pay more attention to the pocket welts (the little strips that cover the opening), since the pattern doesn't quite match up on either of them & the attachment is a bit shoddy.
...but a very exciting note for next time, or the time after, whenever I use the red/gold fabric, is that I will be using these:

these brass buttons were dated to the late 1830s by the antiques store I bought them at (a cursory Google suggests that button enthusiasts concur.) there are seven in total, which is a couple more than I need for the front closure, so I might see about making that one double-breasted and keep the seventh around for a spare or memento or what have you. hang it off my watch chain maybe.
also, it's a bit too dark to get a good image of it right now, but soon I'll have a picture to share of my "new" sewing machine! I mostly plan to use it for seams and other concealable structural elements--hand finishing is too much fun & provides too neat of a finish for me to give it up.
#sewing projects#historical fashion#the pattern is Black Snail Patterns' c. 1830 waistcoat if you're interested!#also re: the other clothes in the 1st photo: the shirt is one I bought & the pants are loaned. nothing else exciting today unfortunately#though the watch (not pictured) on the end of the chain (pictured) is mine & it's pretty cool. maybe i'll post a photo of that tomorrow

i love those sleeves!!! are they reversible? did you work off a specific historical inspiration? they look so heavy, are they pulling hard on the point where they are affixed?
Hi! Thank you very much!
I had a bunch of references like those :

And I used mostly this pattern :
The sleeves were straight from this but i made a lot of modifications in order to make the bust work for me
As for the sleeves, yes, the fabric is fairy heavy, but it's not pulling too much on the sleeves ! (My bag, however ... ToT)
I could either have sewn them on the dress with ribbons (like in the portraits, I think), but they could also be separated, which was the option I prefered. (I need to sew in some eyelets, but because i was pressed for time, I chose to use rings hidden under the fabric and they work fine ! ) It's really nice to be able to detach them when it's a bit hot, like when we went dancing !
Ah and no, they're not reversible! They would be too heavy .... but (it's not finished yet) they can be pulled close to my hand with a thread :) i need to finish thos eylets too ..

hat level: unlocked. still a WIP but the shape is there! it's gonna be too tight on my head but maybe I can resew the lining so it's not bunched up in the tightest part of it. I've already taken hours just for the beading on both sides.
this is the rest of the dress of course

finished my new shirt a week or two ago but didn't have an opportunity to take good pictures till just now! (don't mind the modern pants lol)

the design is quite close to the specifications of the same book I used for the last couple (The Workwoman's Guide, published 1838), but for a formal/"gentleman's" shirt instead. the main differences lie in how much fabric is used and, of course, the frills/ruffles. I did leave out the bib or front that the book directs you to let into the chest; I couldn't find any reference examples online of a shirt with both frills and a let-in front, so I just did the frills.
very happy with how this one turned out--I have some quibbles with the collar, which I think could stand to be taller/fuller, but I have other things I wanna get to so I'm leaving it as is. for now I have a fancy shirt suitable for wearing in any situation where I want to look poetic and/or fancy. ideal wear for drowning during an ill-advised Italian boating trip
also depicted in the first image is my new cravat that I made the other night--an 18 x 18 right triangle of red muslin, folded up and tied. I fancy it is rather grand, if you will
next time i might have a waistcoat to show? maybe?
