Wakanda Forever a shuri / namor fic M, oneshot http://archiveofourown.org/works/43022169
Shuri has stepped closer to him. In the distance, the low keening of a reef whale.
Her eyes are molten brown. He is not sure if she means to study him or strike him, but he welcomes the potential contact anyway.
Her fingertips are light on his cheek, tracing the topmost scar.
“You are the ruler of the most powerful nation on land.”
“Yes.”
“So what are you afraid of?”

twitter idiots are comparing namor and wendy, like one of those is a man who cares deeply for his people and is a complex well rounded character, the other is pure white washed shit played by a racist actress.
#with this and the shurinamor shipping discourse already starting up I remember how much I loathe the mcu fandom#anyways im going back to enjoying my character#but my block button got a lot of use tonight#my ramblings

Can't believe how much chemistry Namor and Shuri had to be honest. MCU romances found in the dust.
To be very fair, the MCU by and large doesn't like to allow for good canon romance, though I still have a few ships I enjoy or enjoyed (T'Challa and Nakia among them)--but yeah the chemistry was insane. And maybe that's part of the issue. By and large franchises like Star Wars, LOTR, and the MCU are uncomfortable with romance and sexuality. So the canon ships are left with a few kisses here and there, max, companionable relationships that develop in the background.
Whereas ships like Reylo, Galadriel, and ShuriNamor exist based off of the actors' chemistry, and because there's no expectation that a canonical romance will occur (or at least go beyond a confused moment) the franchises they belong to feel comfortable letting them linger. They feel comfortable teasing.
Like, I do think that in a post-Reylo world there has absolutely been more of a door opened intentionally for these things. Whatever Amazon execs wanna say now, I know that Sexy Sauron spent a whole season adventuring with Galadriel for a reason.
And ShuriNamor took that a step further, because Namor is very much... not a traditional villain, deeply sympathetic, and highly charismatic. Shuri is in a truly low place throughout the novel, vulnerable. They have shared trauma, a shared need for vengeance. Both are given this revered status among their people and must act as a protector. And on a very basic level, Tenoch and Letitia were both acting their asses off with tons of chemistry.
But yeah, this is one of those ones where I was a bit shocked by how intentional it was. I have no expectation of this ever being canon (at least, in a way that is requited lol) but Ryan Coogler knows what he did. Let's burn the world together? The underwater date with Con La Brisa in the background? The weirdly erotic fight scene in which Shuri at one point quite literally claws his back? (The feminine murmur in my audience lol.) His little "the day Shuri beat my ass" mural?
Like, they know it's all a subtextual tease, but it was a subtextual tease that was absolutely done on purpose, imo.
