Sunday, August 27 - Quebec City
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unlike in Trois-Rivieres, here in Quebec City there was plenty to see that we missed the first time around and we had a beautiful day for it. We had heard there would be a changing of the guard ceremony up at the Citadel, so hurried up there first thing, taking some steep streets rather than the stairs to bypass the funicular and then another series of streets up from the upper town to the fortifications. It turned out they were short-staffed so no changing of the guard, and instead a military concert and guided tour of the inside of the Citadel and the museum was offered, so we took a pass and decided to explore "The Plains of Abraham" on our own. The plains are actually a huge open area just to the west of the fortifications for Quebec City. They were named for a farmer who worked the land here long before the establishment of the city. The plains played an important part in the capture of "New France" by the British in what they call the Seven Years War (and we call the French and Indian War).
Tumblr media
We had been willing to simply walk west and explore, but a staircase down to sea-level and a small enclave beckoned, so we went down 400+ steps passing many folks getting their workout by coming back up. These are the Cap-Blanc steps and the longest stairs in the city. We did not plan to go back that way! At the bottom is a major highway, but also one interior street back against the cliffs with some lovely older rowhouses. It is not connected to the main lower town, but seems to be an isolated section of town. We explored this area, then headed west, sharing the path with lots of bicycles on this beautiful morning.
We never found out how far the bike path went, however, since after about e mile we took another bike path back in and up the cliff. This followed the line of the original French road that led from a natural landing area west of town up to the plains and the western fortifications for the town. Starting at the bottom and continuing with many stops up the path were interpretive panels detailing the events of September 12 and 13, 1759. This was the British Major-General Wolfe's final attempt to take the city of Quebec after months of laying siege to the city. In short, he landed troops near the bottom of the road and below the cliff, managed to get over 4,000 troops up to the plains, and mostly surprised the unorganized French army and their militias and indigenous fighters and eventually won the day. The interpretation was superb, and it made the slog up to the top of the hill pleasant.
There are still three Martello towers built by the British up on the top - put there to help defend the western fortifications - but built too late to ever see action. They are squat and round, and we first heard of them in Folkestone, which seems like years ago, but was actually just over a month past. The plains now also boasts a nice running oval, as well as a hard surface for skating, etc., lots of small pavilions and picnic tables, lawns, and a gorgeous sunken garden.
We also walked to the Parliament building, which seems to be a popular tourist bus stop, and eventually wandered back by the Swiss clock installation by City Hall. This was a gift from Jura, Switzerland to Quebec on the 400th anniversary of the founding of the city, and is the only one of its kind in the world. It took over 10,500 person-hours and six years to complete, involved 28 trades and weighs 2 tons. Watching the mechanisms is mesmerizing, and it is supposedly more accurate than a quartz watch. It's hard to photograph, however, as it is encased in shatterproof glass, a good idea for a clock valued at 2.4 million!
From here we wandered down to the lower town, which I think is my favorite part of the city. The buildings are mostly made of local stone, and the visual variation comes in the colors used for shutters, roofs, and flower boxes. It is also quite touristy, with lots of shops and restaurants, but the late afternoon light was lovely on the warm-colored stone, and we spent quite a bit of time trying to get some good photos. The funicular leaves from this area, too, although it didn't seem that crowded.
We finally headed back to our ship, and were delayed a bit boarding. There had been a mobile "cherry-picker" style machine working on our ship's exterior, and it had finished. Because of security, there were all sorts of moveable barricades to get out of its way, and it was quite amusing to see this giant machine try to navigate the too small openings the security people scrambled to open. With a lot of back and forthing, it eventually lumbered on and we scrambled back on board. We once again had dinner outside as we sailed away around 7. Our only disappointment is that because of a bridge, we had to go around the far side of Ile d' Orleans and missed one last glimpses of Montmorency Falls.
Tomorrow we repeat in Sangueney, and have no plans. We will probably walk around the small town by the dock and relax a bit after six busy port days.

What to Remember While Purchasing Garage Door Openers
Many people know that they need a strong gate for their garage, but shy away from getting one because they are afraid that the gate that they get will be either very expensive or very heavy. However, it is actually a good idea to get a gate that is really heavy because that will increase the security of the garage. It is very important to have secure gates because thieves often break into garages and also gain access into the house through it.
Tumblr media
If you are avoiding heavy gates because you feel that you will have a very difficult time opening them everyday, you have perhaps not considered the option of installing garage door openers. Various types of garage door openers are available, so you have to know a thing or two about them before going out to choose the one which will be appropriate for you.
Garage door openers can be classified into two categories: commercial and residential. The slide, hoist, jackshift, and trolley models are used for commercial purposes. The slide models are appropriate for single or bi-parting slide doors. Hoist and jackshift operators are used for shutters, rolling doors, and grilles. Gates with the sectional models usually require trolley openers.
Garage door openers can also be categorized according to their drive systems. You will have to decide whether you want a chain driven, belt driven, or direct driven model. Generally people opt for systems that provide seven inches lift or drop per second.
Do not forget to check the safety measures that a garage door opener provides. If you are choosing an automatic model, make sure that there is an invisible beam system which ensures that the gate does not close if a person is beneath it. Also look for the emergency release cord in the model that you wish to buy.
Some people also avoid garage door openers because they feel that these are very noisy machines. However, this is far from true. Lately many models have been designed to ensure that they do not make too much noise. You must also keep your opener well lubricated to ensure that it operates silently. If you think that your gate is making too much noise, you may have it inspected by experts.

Exterior Wood Repair Services When painting the exterior of Las Vegas NV homes we frequently encounter rotted or damaged wood on siding, window sills, trim or shutters.  While many paint over it and try to cover damaged spots the best course of action is to repair the affected areas and restore your largest investment.
How to Recognize Wood Rot Rot happens, even to the best of houses. All it takes is wood, water, and warmth. Wood rot is generally easy to repair, although you can't fix it until you find it. With a 5-in-1 tool carefully inspect the horizontal boards that may not drain completely, like corner joints, window sills, drip caps, end grain and wood that is close to masonry or dirt. Also, look for paint that is blistering, peeling or cracked and wood that is darker than the surrounding area or contains green algae. If you're able to push the tool's tip easily into a suspect board, then it's time to root out the rot.
Wood Replacement Patch Depending on the extent and the size of the damage to the wood, there are times when it's best to replace the damaged section with new wood. The methods for replacing wood trim are very similar to these wood siding repair processes.
• Remove The Damaged Section • Cut. siding section (oscillating) • Remove. loosen and remove nails (5-in-1 tool) • Match. clapboard profile (lumber store)
Prepare The Patch • Cut. patch sizes/angles (jig/skill) • Prime. six sides with wood primer • Prime. ends of exposed wall siding • Caulk. sides that butt-up to wall/siding
Install The Patch • Slide. clapboard into place • Nail. plywood, edges of cut wall siding • Nail Set. just below the wood surface • Filler. wood joints, nail holes

The Lost John D. Wendel Mansion - 442-444 Fifth Avenue
To the rear the Wendel carriage house can be seen.  The ample side yard is to the right.  from the collection of the CUNY Graduate Center Collection, Murray Hill
Johann Gottlieb Wendel began his career as a fur merchant with partner John Jacob Astor.  The close relationship between the two led to Wendel's marrying Astor's half-sister, Elizabeth.  And like Astor, Wendel invested his profits in Manhattan real estate, multiplying his fortune.
Johann and Elizabeth had one child, John D. Wendel, who took over his father's real estate business when he died.  Elizabeth Astor Wendel died on November 28, 1846, leaving her son a vast amount of Manhattan real estate.
John D. Wendel and his wife, Mary Ann, had seven children--six daughters (Rebecca, Augusta, Josephine, Henrietta, Georgiana, Mary and Ella) and one son, John Gottlieb Wendell II.
Despite what The New York Herald called his "immense wealth," Wendel was notoriously frugal.  The New York Times would later say that he "let his contractor draw the plans [of his mansion] to save the architect's fees."
That mansion, at No. 442 Fifth Avenue on the corner of 39th Street, was completed in 1856.   The up-to-date Ango-Italianate house sat on a rusticated brownstone base.  Three stories of red brick rose to a hipped roof atop a bracketed cornice.   Two sets of French doors at the second floor facing Fifth Avenue opened onto stone balustraded balconies.
Despite Wendel's wariness not to waste money, the family enjoyed the lifestyle of wealthy Victorians.  Records show seven servants in the 20-room house.  And on March 1, 1860 The New York Times noted that "Mr. John D. Wendel and family have arrived from Paris."  Their summer estate was at Irvington-on-Hudson, near George Merrit's impressive "Lyndenhurst."
It was there, on September 12, 1876 that the Wendels' eldest daughter, Henrietta Dorothea died.  The funeral was held in that house the following day.  The New York Herald announced that the funeral would begin "on arrival of the 2 P.M. train from Grand Central depot.  Carriages will be in waiting."
One month later John D. Wendel died, also at the summer estate.  The New York Herald, on November 30, commented "Mr. Wendel was one of the very few survivors of the class of United States merchants whose frugal industry, exact business habits and unswerving integrity will soon be without a living representative."
Mary and her six surviving children--all unmarried--continued to live in the Fifth Avenue mansion.  Possibly because of her husband's famous frugality, little inside had been changed since the house was opened in 1856.
In 1893 the neighborhood around the exclusive Union League Club, on Fifth Avenue and 21st Street, was rapidly becoming commercialized.  The members began searching for a new location further uptown and on October 11 the New-York Tribune reported "It has a hope of getting the northwest corner of Thirty-ninth-st...where the widow of John D. Wendel lives, and adjoining which is a vacant lot."   The Site Committee would have to keep looking.  Mary was not interested in selling.  And the "vacant lot" was no such thing--it was the Wendels' garden, by now an exquisitely valuable piece of Midtown property.
Mary A. Wendel died on the evening of March 30, 1894.  Her son, John Gottlieb Wendel II, did not open the house for her funeral, as would have been expected, but held it at the Madison Avenue M. E. Church.  It may have been a hint of things to come.
While each of the girls received $340,000 in stocks, John inherited the bulk of the $10 million estate.  A month earlier The Evening World had reported on John's wealth, unaware of course of his pending inheritance.  His personal worth was already estimated at $1.5 million, his annual income at $75,000 and his "daily income" at $205 (the daily income would equal about $7,350 today).
While his father had been frugal, John G. Wendel was miserly.  And he controlled his five sisters tyrannically.  Terrified that the family fortune would be diluted, he refused to allow them to marry, and put an end to entertainments and most outside socializing.
The New York Times later explained that he "taught them they must not marry or dissipate their stewardship and that publicity was demeaning."
Wendel's eccentricities went beyond his control of his sisters.  According to Daniel Okrent in his 2003 Great Fortune, he was "something of a paranoid: fearful that disease could enter his body through his feet he stomped around in a custom-made, mutant form of platform shoes, their inch-thick gutta percha soles extended by fenders reaching another full inch in either direction."
If his mother had allowed any concessions at all to modernity at all, he stopped that.  The mansion became a time capsule.  The furnishings were not updated, his sisters' wardrobes grew out of style, mended and re-mended as necessary, and modern conveniences like electricity were disallowed.  (Luckily plumbing had been installed early on in the history of the house.)
A zinc-lined bathtub (with shower) was state-of-the-art when installed.  from the collection of the New York Public Library
Although he said it was his lack of confidence in the police that caused him not to report a robbery in the mansion; it was more likely that he simply did not want strangers coming in.  In either case, when the family closed the house to go to Irvington in 1894, he left caretaker Samuel McKinney to watch over it.  When they returned "it was locked up and McKinney had disappeared.  A quantity of cash and bonds had also vanished," according to a newspaper.
Years later, on June 8, 1899, The New York Times wrote "When John G. Wendel lost $6,000 in cash and bonds from his home, 444 Fifth Avenue, nearly four years ago, he exhibited less anxiety over the matter than he might have been expected to feel."  The matter would never have been discovered had McKinney not beaten his wife, Rosa.  In retaliation she went to the police and told all.
In January 1899 47-year-old Georgiana Wendel tried to break free of her brother's iron grasp. She escaped to the Park Avenue Hotel.  Apparently to hide her tracks, she checked out on Sunday night, January 22, but retained the key.  The New York Times reported that she "returned quietly" and "having the key in her possession, went to her room without saying anything to the hotel people."
When the suite was given to another guest the following afternoon, she was discovered.  Her brother had her deemed insane and sent temporarily to Bellevue Hospital.
Georgiana was then removed to the Irvington-on-Hudson house where she was in effect held prisoner.  The feisty heiress did not give up easily, however.  She communicated with two friends, Mrs. F. W. Mack and Mrs. Maurice J. Sullivan.  They obtained a writ of habeas corpus to have Georgiana appear in court "to be examined as to her mental condition," according to The New York Times on September 6, 1900.  But she did not appear.
The article noted "Both Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. Mack had visited the Wendel Residence in Irvington on Aug. 22, but were not allowed to have an interview with Miss Wendel, although she spoke to them from an open window.  The women say they think she is perfectly sane, and that she is restrained of her liberty by her relatives."
The attorneys of John Wendel presented an application to the court stating that Georgiana "is incompetent to manage herself and affairs by reason of loss of memory and understanding."
Judge Smith Lent said he saw no reason why Georgiana had not been brought in for examination.  Wendel's lawyer responded "They do not dare to produce her here!"
Lent ordered her to be produced in court the next day.
When Georgiana did not show up, Judge Lent took the court to the Wendel house in Irvington.  The Times reported "She declared that she was restrained of her liberty by her brother, John G. Wendel, who wanted to get her money."  But sadly, when Wendel testified that he had not seen his sister for nearly two years, Georgiana was deemed "undoubtedly suffering from delusional insanity."
In the meantime, John's peculiarities affected his Manhattan neighbors to the rear.  No. 1 West 39th Street, next to the Wendel carriage house, was owned by Neville P. Jodrell and his wife.  In the spring of 1900 they began remodeling the old brownstone into a modern, American basement plan residence.  The architects included windows on the side wall that opened onto a shaft for ventilation.  Wendel suspected they secretly wanted views into his house.
He retaliated with a wall.  On May 12, 1900 The Times reported he had hired architects J. B. Snook & Sons to erect a foot thick, eight-foot wide wall that would rise about 28 feet "to be build right up against the Thirty-ninth Street house in front of the windows."
Both No. 1 West 39th Street and John Wendel's retaliating wall were gone in 1932 when this photograph was taken.  from the collection of the CUNY Graduate Center Collection, Murray Hill
John would have to refocus his attention from spying neighbors to his relentless sister, Georgiana before long.  She had managed to get the verdict of insanity upset "on the ground of irregularity" and now, in September 1901 she sued her brother, claiming that he had not distributed their father's estate in accordance with the will.  She wanted her rightful share.

Georgiana escaped to Europe where she was still living in 1907 when she finally capitulated.  The New York Times reported "A reconciliation was effected.  Miss Georgiana returned willingly to the family roof."
On November 25, 1906 the Colorado Herald Democrat reported on the family's bizarre anachronistic lifestyle.  The article told of the last unimproved lot in the Fifth Avenue business district, the Wendel's former garden, now neglected and barren.  "To the south of the vacant lot stands an old-fashioned red brick house of the type that belonged to the Fifth avenue grandeur of bygone days."
The journalist continued, "Land in that neighborhood is worth more than $10,000 a front foot, and yet this lot has a high board fence around it and lies entirely idle."  Brokers, he said, "were ready to give $600,000" for the lot.  But the Wendel sisters would not give up the garden lot, because, for one thing, it was the only spot where Toby, their dog, could romp.
The far-away publication was not the only one noticing the strange behavior of the mansion's occupants.  The New York Times remarked "Because of his aversion to automobiles and other modern improvements [John Wendel] became known as 'The Hermit of Fifth Avenue.'"
Around 1912 Rebecca Wendel became only sister to successfully break free.   Despite what a newspaper called her brother's "violent opposition," she married clergyman Luther Arthur Swope.  "Thereafter John Wendel discouraged his sisters from going to church," said The Times.
Ella, Georgiana, Mary and Josephine, continued to live in the the antiquated mansion, obeying John's rules.  The New York Times later commented “The sisters dressed in styles of many years ago, lived frugally and simply, and persisted in hanging the family washing in the back yard in defiance of neighbors’ protests," adding that they “never ride in a street car and never in their lives have they been in an automobile.  They never shop in the fashionable district, for things are too expensive there.  They buy all their groceries and supplies in the inexpensive little shops over on Sixth Avenue and make their purchases personally, seldom letting them be delivered but carrying them home themselves and paying for them with cash.  They are quick to see bargains and watch for them like the poorest housewife.”
Josephine died in the spring of 1914, her $3 million estate being divided among her siblings.
John G. Wendel died a few months later, on November 30, leaving an estate valued at $55 million, according to The Real Estate Record & Guide on December 5.  He left control of the family estate in the hands of Rebecca.  Mary became the financial executive for the three sisters in the Fifth Avenue house.
In reporting on John's death The Times said "He lived as simply as a $25 a week clerk with his two [sic] sisters in his big square house on the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Thirty-ninth Street."  There was no telephone, no electric lights, no conveniences inside.  Not even a sewing machine for mending the clothing.
On February 28, 1915 The New York Times again described the house of the Wendel sisters.  "In Winter only the first two floors and the basement are habitable, because the old furnace does not carry heat well above the second floor."  It mentioned that in the side yard was "an old tree and a dog house, with a turf that has not been cut in thirty years.  There, after dark, so that no prying eyes can spy down from neighboring buildings, the sisters take their exercise."
"With them are two old women servants, and the five old women live curiously oblivious of the New York of the moment.  The riot of fashion, extravagance, joy, mirth, sin crime, pride, and ambition which flows past them on the avenue constantly seems not to have affected them at all."
Self-isolated, the aging women rarely had visitors.  "Of social life the old house has absolutely none.  No outsider has dined there in years.  With a few of the old New York families the Wendels still retain friendly relations, and on very rare occasions they receive a call, but as they never return these calls, and as they rarely call on any one themselves, their visitors become each year fewer and fewer."
Oddly enough, years later The Times would mention "There was very little exchange of affection between the sisters who lived in the same house.  They simply spent their lives side by side."
In October 1922 Mary Eliza Astor Wendel died at the Irvington-on-Hudson estate.  Other than bequests to servants, her $15 million estate was divided among her sisters.
Ella and Georgiana continued on as always.  Their lawyer, Charles G. Koss, explained "They simply wished to live alone with their servants in their old home surroundings, and they lived just like anybody else."  That assertion was arguable.
In 1929 Georgiana was stricken with influenza which developed into pneumonia.  She died on January 18 at the age of 79.  Her death was only discovered by the public when her sisters filed for the administration of her estate.   Not long afterward The Times described No. 442 Fifth Avenue saying, "it has never been changed.  The dining room, parlor and library, it is said, are scrupulously kept in the exact condition in which they were left by the builder of the house, John Wendel."
While everything inside the house remained unchanged, by the late 1920's the balconies had been removed, most likely for safety reasons, and the Fifth Avenue enframements shaved off.  Wendel Family Papers, Special Collections and Archives, Drew University Library
Developers were disheartened when it was announced that “Miss Ella V. von E. Wendel, an elderly woman and worth many millions, will live alone with the old family servants and carry on the traditions of the Wendel family in the old rusty brick mansion at Thirty-ninth Street and Fifth Avenue.”
The 20th century did not change Ella Wendel's wardrobe.  Wendel Family Papers, Special Collections and Archives, Drew University Library
On July 20, 1930 Rebecca A. D. Wendel Swope died, leaving Ella the sole surviving sister and the end of the Wendel line.    Newspaper readers were somewhat shocked, although surprisingly so, when her entire estate was left to the 80-year old Ella with nothing at all left to charity.
One of the most bizarre chapters in New York's social history was about to close.  Eight months after Rebecca's death, 78-year-old Ella Virginia von E. Wendel suffered a stroke.  She died in the Fifth Avenue house a week later, on March 13, 1931.   Her massive estate had made her the equivalent of a billionaire today.  The Times reported "The real estate accumulated in the name of Wendel is now valued at more than $100,000,000 and the only living creature that was close to the last holder was a French poodle named Tobey."
In accordance with John G. Wendel's distaste for publicity, there was no crepe hung on the door (nor had there been at the time of his or the other sisters' deaths).  Her funeral was held on March 16.
Little remained of the venerable mansion on December 5, 1934.  from the collection of the New York Public Library
Four years later the Art Deco S. H. Kress & Co. flagship 5-and-10-cent store was completed on the site.  That magnificent structure was demolished in the mid-1980's to make way for Republic National Bank tower.

A door-sized bronze plaque memorializing the Wendel mansion was removed from the Kress Building and installed in the new structure.

th'Eclipse Adventure: Roll 2/3
On the ground floor was the kitchen and dining area, where the men would chow down on their daily meals. Of course because it was a treasured historical site, we could only observe the hall from behind a massive plexiglass wall, but all the same it was an interesting sight.
Upstairs, were the actual barracks. Again, because of their fragility, we silly tourists could only regale the scene from behind plexiglass obstacles. I would have loved to examine the barrack hall and its details more closely, but I had to make do with being trapped in a box (I certainly did understand what zoo animals must feel like in their pens, although the difference being I had the opportunity to leave my cage). The barracks possessed a serene and almost sacred air to them. Each bed appeared as though at any time, their owner would come trudging up the stairs to face-plant into their pillow in exhaustion. Every alcove looked entirely undisturbed, which was disturbing seeing as there wouldn't be anyone returning to sleep there ever again.
Soon, standing in the plexiglass box among the barracks, we found ourselves overrun by other tourists, so we decided to abandon the location for a new sight. Just outside the Cavalry Barracks was a pathway that led people along a rectangular tour around the campus. From our vantage point, near the beginning of this path, we could see it shot straight ahead past some small buildings, a giant white house, and some more ruins before sharply turning left towards some other buildings and ruins. We all walked along the path and as we passed different buildings, our numbers would slowly dwindle until it was just Niky and myself approaching the giant white house. Although, this may be because I made a B-line for this particular structure as it possessed superbly clean lines, highly contrasted light and shadows and many angular nooks and crannies that I itched to take a closer look at and photograph.
Of course, I didn't know it at the time, but as I explained in the previous installment, my camera shutter was sticking and creating black blob-y shadows in the rightmost sections of photographs, so many of the would-be-amazing photos from this location didn't turn out (much sad). The photos featured in this post are the ones from this roll that I could salvage, many of which aren't the most interesting, but it's still some content right?
After I had finally captured Phantom Gleam of Dolly Zoom Proportions I trotted out to the front balcony, discovered some family members standing there, and together we descended the stairway adjoining the rightmost side of said balcony. We walked along the path and followed the 90 degree left turn to approach another building which I believe was the captain's lodging (but don't quote me on that as I was not and am still not sure which particular structure this was) (I guess that makes me a bad tourist oops). After briefly examining this building (it was overflowing with family-fun tourists), we regrouped on the pathway and headed towards another crop of ruins. These next ruins we found to have many windows, and so we looked through them. (just imagine that sentence being said by Jeremy Clarkson in his narrating voice) (I just did and it was hilarious) (But then again, Jeremy Clarkson makes anything ridiculous) (That wasn't at all related to this topic; carry on).
I snapped a few frames of windows through windows on these ruins, but then found I could no longer advance the film. I finished the black and white roll. I was a tad saddened that I ran out of shots as I had wanted to venture into these ruins as I had the others to take photos, but I soon discovered that there was a petite sign sitting before the ruins that read, "Please don't climb on the ruins," so that plan was thwarted from the start. So it was okay that I ran out of film, plus my little herd was ready to move on. I stepped off the path for a second to wind up the roll, place it in its canister, and load a fresh roll of color film. Soon enough we were ambling along to the next location.
The Silent Hum of Collective Anticipation
Essentially, that was the all-encompassing aura of the Fort Laramie site on the day of the eclipse. In the later morning hours as everyone began strolling around the grounds, the subdued jitters of earlier began to fade in exchange for a steady increase in excitement. But seeing as the event wasn't to occur for several more hours, the masses, including myself, my family and our friends, had to suffice with viewing the main campus.
We had finished up at the hospital ruins (mentioned in th'Eclipse Adventure: Roll 1/3) and aimlessly meandered down the hill and again approached the Cavalry Barracks. This time, instead of puttering around the obscenely long porch, we entered the building to see what it had in store for our touristy viewing pleasure.
The one photo from shooting at this house that I am exceptionally and undeniably relieved wasn't obscured by the shutter-shadow is the first photo on this post, Phantom Gleam of Dolly Zoom Proportions. When waltzing around the top floor of the building, I took a glance down and saw this staircase. I was immediately drawn to the many bisecting lines, varied angles, depth, light and shadows in the scene I saw below. I whipped out my trusty Nikon F3 loaded with this roll of Kodak T-Max 100 film and was about to snap the photo when... A flock of tourists entered the house through the doorway seen in the photograph.
Within this herd of tourists were an old grandmother with her two very slow toddler grandchildren. I don't have anything against old people, in fact I greatly appreciate elder folks, but I was so eager to snap this photo that I became magnificently agitated at their slow pace. As they finally ascended the stairway, I lifted my camera to take the shot when... Another school of family-fun tourists marauded my shot. And then another. An another And every so often, in between onslaughts of groups, a single solitary body would enter the doorway and make for the stairs.
I waited there for seven minutes.
At the top of those steps.
Just to get this photograph.
If it hadn't turned out, I would have thrown a hissy-fit.
But do it for the photo, am I right?
Luckily, the photo wasn't ruined in any sort, and even though I was disappointed that almost every shot on this roll was touched by the shutter-shadow, the fact that this photo was unblemished and beyond my expectations made up for the other ruined photographs.
Impatiently slumping at the peak of the stairway was well worth the wait.
Apologies for a slight abrupt end to this part of th'Eclipse Adventure, but like any middle installment to a trilogy, the second section isn't always the best written or composed; it serves as a transition to the climax and falling action to the narrative. So you'll just have to wait to see and read the finale of the tale.
Which will published in closer proximity to this post than this post was in relation to th'Eclipse Adventure: Roll 1/3.
Anyways,
Thanks for popping by.

WINDOW PAINTING SERVICES
When working with windows, sills and frames you want to use a paint that stands up particularly well to higher moisture levels to help prevent water from penetrating the surfaces. Windows play a large role in defining the style of your house and should be painted accordingly. They come in many different types such as single hung, double hung, casement, bay, picture, transom, slider, stationary and jalousie windows. When creatively painted windows and shutters are great ways to accentuate through color and add dimension to your home. In addition to a variety of styles windows are also made from many different materials. Window substrates can require different paints and processes and it's important to know which paints to use with each encounter. Common window substrates include aluminum, composite plastic, fiberglass, vinyl, wood. Window Sills & Frames Peeling Paint. Peeling occurs when window sills and frames encounter consistent moisture. Eventually water penetrates the surface and when it evaporates creates pressure on the paint film causing peeling. Peeling also occurs from poorly sealed window sills that are not caulked or glazed which allows water to penetrate the surfaces. Window Repairs. Remove paint and caulk by scraping, sanding, striping or using a heat gun. Prime any bare surfaces on windows, sills and frames. Caulk with extra attention to angles and crevices which commonly collect moisture. Replace deteriorated wood with redwood, cedar or pressure treated lumber. Prime all 6 sides before install to reduce moisture penetration.

The Most Beautiful Ball
Did you happen to see the photographs on Instagram of the Swan Ball?  If you are a fan of Mark Sikes and Sarah Bartholomew – this year’s Swan Ball was made for you!   I know it was for me.
Each year in Nashville, the Swan Ball is held to raise funds for Cheekwood, the mansion and botanical garden located on 55 acres in the Nashville Hills.
Mark and Sarah served as this year’s esteemed Event Designers of The Swan Ball – and as you can imagine Cheekwood was bathed in their favorite color.  The tables were pure Mark and Sarah.  These two are a perfect match and probably should be working together – they would set the design world on fire, even though they already have, separately!!!
Mark lives and works in L.A., but Sarah lives in Nashville – so their pairing for the Swan Ball makes perfect sense with Sarah holding down the fort, locally.  I was drooling over the table settings when they started popping up on Instagram this weekend.  They were gorgeous.
But first, what IS the Swan Ball?
This year is the 55th Annual Swan Ball and it is Nashville’s social highlight of the year.  Held each June, it benefits Cheekwood Estate and Gardens.   The dress is very elegant – white tie.  This partial list of who’s who from past years Swan Balls gives you a clue of how first class this event truly is.
PAST SWAN AWARD RECIPIENTS:
The Honorable Walter H. Annenberg Dr. Armand Hammer Mr. Kip Forbes Mr. Albert Hadley!!! Mrs. Anne Hendricks Bass Mrs. Lynne S. Wyatt Mario Buatta!!! Bunny Williams!!!
PAST ENTERTAINERS:
Johnny Cash Tony Bennett Jay Leno Diana Ross Aretha Franklin Reba McEntire
PAST DESIGNER EXHIBITIONS:
Oscar de la Renta!!! Bill Blass!!! Carolina Herrera!!! Carolyne Roehm!!! Jacqueline de Ribes Halston
PAST JEWELRY EXHIBITORS:
Tiffany!!! Cartier!!! Bulgari!!! Harry Winston Van Cleef and Arpels Mish
This year the entertainer was the singer Sheryl Crow, the jeweler was Mish, and the honoree was Carolina Herrera.  Not bad!
The event is so special the actual Swan Auction is held three weeks before the Ball.  On the night of the ball, the elders eat at Cheekwood, while the younger set have their own party and dinner at Massey Hall at the Botanical Center. After dinner, they come to see the “late night” entertainment over at the Late Party at Cheekwood.
To read the auction items go HERE.
And before all the festivities even start, in February there is an Unveiling Party to announce the details of the ball and to see a preview of the décor.
In other words, it is quite an event, to say the least!!!
The Swan Ball Event Designers Mark Sikes and Sarah Bartholomew at the Unveiling Party this past February.
Hmmm.  I wonder what their Décor Scheme for this year’s Swan Ball will be?!?!
Meanwhile, I’m busy staring at that Cy Twombly!!
Mark Sikes is known for his casual style and his love of the color blue.  Here is a living room he designed – a vision in blue and white.
But, Mark uses other colors, sometimes, as long as they blend with blue!  I love this room!!!  And that’s his own rug!  Love, love, love that rug.
Mark’s design partner for the Swan Ball, Sarah Bartholomew, is a rising star in Nashville.
Be sure to visit Sarah and Mark’s blogs for their photos from the Swan Ball!!
Sarah’s design for an entry hall is bathed in blue.  One of my favorite foyers ever!!  LOVE!!
While Sarah loves blue and white like Mark, she also does a lot of green.  She especially loves to mix green with blue.
So…what design scheme do you think Mark and Sarah came up with for the Swan Ball?  Blue and white?  Blue with red?  Green and white?  Green with blue???
Patience, patience.
First, let’s take a look at the Cheekwood mansion:
Cheekwood Art and Gardens is located 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville on the once private estate known simply as Cheekwood.  The 55 acres contain 12 distinct gardens, including a Japanese Garden, numerous ponds, fountains, walkways, and paths.   There is the Pineapple Room restaurant on the property, the large Massey Hall, the Museum of Art, the Frist Learning Center and the Wills Perennial Garden.
The Museum of Art, is the centerpiece of Cheekwood:  it is located in the 1920s Georgian mansion once owned by the Cheek Family.  The Frist Learning Center is located in the original carriage house and stables.
The story goes that in the 1920s young Mabel Cheek bought a floor to ceiling gilt mirror at an antique shop.  It was too tall for the home she and her husband Leslie lived in, so he said either sell the mirror or they would have to move.  Apparently Mabel chose to move and that is how Cheekwood came to be built.
The couple met when the single Mabel Wood stopped in Kentucky while on a train trip.  Leslie Cheek noticed Mabel and asked her name and where she was going.  A few days later a mutual friend brought Leslie to Mabel’s house to properly meet her.  He wooed her with weekly gifts of candy and flowers and in 1896, they married in Clarksville.  After the wedding, Leslie worked for CT Cheek & Sons, the family’s wholesale grocery distributor.
The wedding of Mabel and Leslie Cheek.
In 1929, after Mabel had bought her oversized mirror, they hired Bryant Fleming to design a 36 room, 30,000 sq ft house.
Cheekwood, as it was being built.
Originally the property covered 100 acres, and today, it is on 50 acres.   But,  since Cheekwood is right next to The Warner Parks, together, the two properties are over 2,684 acres of woodland, all designed by Bryant Fleming.   Bryant was not only the architect of Cheekwood,  he also acted as the interior and landscape designer.   When built, the Limestone house had 9 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, an elevator, a hidden staircase, and a library to hold the 1000s of books in the Cheeks’ collection.   For their two children, son Leslie Jr. and daughter Huldah, separate suites were built.  The house was furnished with English antiques from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Cheekwood, named after Leslie Cheek and Mabel Wood.
A early aerial view from the rear.  You can see how the loggia on the back side of the house was originally open aired, with no doors.  Today it is closed off with extra tall French doors.  At the left of the main house are the carriage houses and stables.  Today, there is an additional new building there that is the site of the Frist Learning Center.  And notice the reflecting pool at the right of the house.  The drawing room overlooks this area.
1958.  The original fountain at the back of the house.  At one time the open air loggia was closed off by shutters as seen here.  Today, it is completely enclosed behind French doors.
Today:  A winter view of the back of Cheekwood shows the loggia with the installed French doors.  The same fountain remains.  At the left of the house you can see a rather ugly gray addition – this building was added in the 60s in order to provide necessary utilitarian rooms and fire escapes, etc.  for the art museum, as the house now is.
1958.  The original stables.   When the house was completed, the Cheek children were both in college, at Harvard and Bryn Mawr.  They kept their horses at home in the Cheekwood stables.
Today.   The original stables on the right and the carriage house on the left.  A new contemporary building was added to connect these two vintage structures.  This is now the Frist Learning Center.
The stables and carriage house decorated for a wedding.  Cheekwood is one of Nashville’s most popular spots for a wedding and many brides choose this area for their outdoor reception.
The family were world travelers – newspaper clippings reveal they went to such faraway places as India.  One trip to England in 1929 lasted three months and was actually a buying trip for Cheekwood.  Bryant Fleming accompanied the family on this trip to supervise the purchases.
There are invoices and receipts from that trip that survive today.  The family visited Chatsworth and it said the staircase there inspired the one at Cheekwood.   Another source says the staircase was inspired by Queen Charlotte’s palace at Kew.  Hmmm.  The fireplace in the foyer was said to be a Robert Adam but to me there are others in the house that look more like Adam.   The mahogany doors came from Grosvenor House in London.  The receipt above showed they did buy 4 bronze grilles from Grosvenor House, but no mention of doors.   It took seven railway cars to deliver all their London purchases to Cheekwood.
But it all came to an early end for Leslie Sr. who died suddenly in 1935, just a few years after moving into his dream home.  Mabel continued to live in the house, entertaining, gardening and spending much of her time in the library.
Mrs. Cheek passed away in 1945 at 72, leaving the estate to her children and grandchildren.  Her daughter then moved into Cheekwood with her husband and her daughter Leslie.
The family gifted Cheekwood to the public in 1957.  Funds were raised to create the botanical gardens and museum.  The former Nashville Museum of Art offered their permanent collection to Cheekwood and finally in 1960, Nashville’s new attraction opened its doors.
For the past two years and at a cost of many millions of dollars, the house has been renovated and for the first time in years the original mirror is now on display, again.  Before the renovation, the house was used as a museum and for office space.  The renovation will give visitors a look into how the Cheeks actually lived in the house.
Much of the information needed for the restoration was taken from this magazine, published in 1934.  I would LOVE to read this!!!
Alright – I found this on EBay and ordered it!!!  Yeah!!!  I wish it still cost just 50 cents.
Past the front gates, the house, on a rise, comes into view.
In all, the restoration included several of the rooms:   the drawing room, library, dining room, loggia, morning room, recreation room and bedroom suite – all on the first and ground floors.  One the second floor, the Museum will keep its galleries for exhibition space.  The restoration was just completed and the new rooms were revealed at this years Swan Ball.
At one point, the ivy was allowed to grow all over the limestone.  This looks awful!!
Today:  An aerial view shows the front of the house and to the right, the stables and carriage house.
A plan of each 3 floors, thanks to The Devoted Classicist who wrote a long, and wonderful story about Cheekwood HERE.
Because of the hilly property, the house is a fancy kind of split level!  The living room/library wing on the left side of the house is a 1/2 floor below the main floor.  Guests entry the foyer on the ground level and take stairs to the first floor where the decorated grand hallway is.  The loggia runs parallel to the hallway.  To the left is the drawing room which looks out to the side of the house where the Wisteria Arbor and Reflecting Pool are.
Guests at the Swan Ball entering the ground floor front door.  You can see the drawing room wing at the left – which is a half-floor below the main level.  Notice how the drawing room windows are below the first floor windows.   Look at the beautiful limestone façade.   The gray is so on trend for today!
1934.  An early photo of the foyer with its grand stone and iron staircase that leads to the main floor.   A similar tapestry is on the wall today.  It’s a shame the original tapestry is no longer there.  There are two magnificent staircases in the house and they are really the focal points of the mansion.  They are so very elegant and beautiful.
Before the restoration, these two paintings hung in the stairway.
Not the original tapestry, but this one now hangs in the entry hall.
A view from the stairs to the foyer with the Robert Adam? fireplace, which is so gorgeous.  Whether it is an Adam or not, it is an antique mantel from England.
The Foyer.    Here you can see the fireplace more clearly.  Notice the clock above the mantel.  Isn’t it beautiful?
From a Christmas party – the view from the landing down to the foyer.  Flanking the double wood doors are twin gilded mirrors.  These double doors open onto the grand hallway.
1934.   The grand hall off the staircase which is through the double wood doors.  Past the hall are the second set of stairs that lead up to the second floor and the rotunda.  This space is gorgeous.
1958.  A close up of the murals.
A newer view of the grand hallway.  Here you can see the murals.  That looks like the same console that was here in the 50s.
A later view of the grand hallway – you can see the doors that open to the loggia.   The loggia runs parallel to the grand hallway.  It was once open to the elements but today, the loggia is closed in with French doors.   The molding is painted dark here which is more dramatic.   But today the wood is white again – after the restoration.  What a stunning hallway!  Notice the chandeliers.  Past the doorway is the second stairway and the rotunda.
Looking the opposite direction towards the drawing room, which is half a floor down.  Through the double wood doors are the stairs that lead down to the foyer.
Close up of the original chandeliers in the grand hallway.  It looks like there are Oriental figures on the top of the chandelier.
A close of the mural in the hallway.  Amazing!  It looks so real!
Today.  The grand hallway, after restoration.  New curtains.  Newly restored/covered chairs.  The molding is now painted white.
From the Swan Ball, the guests in the grand hallway.  Also, notice the curtains and cornice around the French doors.
Let’s go inside the loggia that runs alongside the grand hallway.
The loggia today.  Through the doors off the grand hallway is the loggia, here set for a garden party.  Notice the medallions embedded in the stucco walls.  And notice the lanterns.
On this end of the loggia, the doors lead into the dining room.  Love the putti!
This view of the loggia, set for another garden party.
Set up for a dinner party.  The doors lead into the dining room.  So pretty!
The  view of the loggia at the back of the house.
For the Swan Ball, a large tent is set up on the lawn and guests enter it through the grand hallway and loggia.
1934.  Back inside, at the end of the grand hallway – are the half set of stairs that led down to the vestibule before the drawing room and library.  More medallions embedded in the stucco.
1958.  In the drawing room with the double wood doors, the view shows the vestibule and the half stairs that lead up to the grand hallway.
At a winter wedding, with the house decorated for Christmas, a bagpiper entertains the guests as he enters the drawing room vestibule.  The molding was painted black back then.
Today:  Looking towards the drawing room – the half stairs lead down to the vestibule.  Through the wood door at the right is a small anteroom that leads to the library.  Notice how pretty the surround around the drawing room’s door is.
And, is that Mabel’s original too-tall mirror?  A wonderful photo of the vestibule.  Notice the medallion embedded in the wall – so pretty!  I love all the medallions that are placed throughout the first floor.
The drawing room – an early view, filled with all the English antiques purchased in London.  For the renovation, the curators tried to recreate this room as closely as possible.
These original photos of the interiors were the ones published in the Country Life Magazine in 1934.
1958.  Later, the room was partially cleared out, probably when Huldah’s family moved out the last time.   Huldah Cheek held her wedding reception in this drawing room.
The one thing I really don’t care for is the red curtains and of course, they reproduced these for the renovation!
Later, a new rug was placed down.  Display cases hold the large Ewers-Tyne collection of Worchester Porcelain.  What is so nice about the drawing room being half a floor below the rest of the house is that the ceiling is taller.
Still, a later view with the rug removed.
The drawing room set for a garden party.  This is the view facing towards the library and the grand hallway, on the right.   The French doors on the left side lead to the Wisteria Arbor and the stairs down to the Reflecting Pool.
Today.   And the newly renovated drawing room, as near to the original décor as possible.
No longer a museum, it is meant to recreate how the Cheeks actually lived in the house.  Notice the mantel.
Notice the pretty ceiling and beautiful molding.
The paint colors were recreated as were the curtains, which do look exactly like the original ones.
And guests admire the fireplace and the newly restored living room.   In the corner is the Steinway piano, a wedding gift from Mabel to her son Leslie Cheek, Jr.  It was signed by Theodore Steinway himself, who wished the couple well.     I would love to see this room decorated for today without having to recreate how it once was.  I would love to see it with whiter walls and neutral curtains, not red, and with a more neutral rug – it is such a beautiful room.
The main view from the room is through the large window at the end of the room and the other view out the side French door, that leads to the wisteria arbor and reflecting pond.
Here you can see the living room’s main window with its Juliet balcony.
The large living room window from the outside, taken at a wedding.  Look how pretty the balcony is.
Another view of the front façade with the left wing where the living room is.  Its large window overlooks the front lawn.
These French doors lead out from the drawing room to the large wisteria arbor.
The Wisteria Arbor overlooks the hills and is a favorite spot where brides pose for a portrait.  Below this is the reflecting pond.
At the side of the wisteria arbor, double stone steps winding around the fountain lead down to the reflecting pond.
Another view of the urn/fountain that shows the French door that leads into the drawing room.
The view of the wisteria arbor from below.
The stairs that lead up from the reflecting pond to the arbor to the drawing room.  At summer the wisteria is so thick!!
In the winter the arbor is exposed.  I wonder why they didn’t use evergreen wisteria.  Maybe it doesn’t grow in Nashville?
The view from the drawing room, down to the wisteria arbor and to the reflecting pond and beyond.
The pond.  You can see the stone stairs that lead up to the wisteria arbor and the drawing room.
1934:  Across from the drawing room is the paneled library.  Here is an early view of the room filled with the Cheek’s English antiques.  Notice the clock above the mantel.  Also, the door to the left of the mantel leads to the vestibule and up to the grand hallway.
Later, the room was cleared out.  The house/museum’s silver collection was displayed in this library.
After the recent renovation, the library looks as it once did, filled with the books the family owned.  Also the furniture is similar to what was once there.  The same original chandelier hangs above.   The door to the right leads to the drawing room.
A closer view of the marble mantel.
Mabel was said to spend almost all her time while inside, in the library.
The vestibule leads to this anteroom that leads to the library.  Notice the antique porcelain portraits on display.
1958:  Going back down the grand hallway – at the end of it is the stairway to the second floor with its rotunda ceiling.
An early view of the rotunda.  Through the arched door is one of the bedroom suites.
Along the wall of the staircase is an arch that opens up to the hall beyond.
Each year there are different artists who do installations for the Swan Ball.  Here it was the great Chihuly who was invited.  One of his light fixtures was installed in the second stair hall.  It is fabulous!!!!!   You can see the rotunda here.
The second stairhall – looking back toward the grand hallway and further, into the drawing room and the French Doors that lead out to the wisteria arbor!  To the right of the mirror and console, out of sight, are the doors that lead to the dining room.
And another art installation – chandelier.  Under this stair, you can barely see an arched door that leads to a bedroom suite.  More about that bedroom, later.
The contemporary light fixture – it looks like rain here!   It hangs down from the rotunda.
1934:  The dining room with dark walls.  The double wood doors open to the stairhall.  Through the doors by the fireplace is the morning room/breakfast room.
1958.  Light painted walls.  The museum’s large snuff collection is through the right door, in what was probably once a butler’s pantry.  The floors are black and white marble.
Another early view of the dining room.  Later, the ironwork on the console will be removed.
Before the restoration, the curtains were red and gold.
Today:  The new dining room under the restoration.  Double doors with the gilded molding open to the dining room.
Furnished in blue to coordinate with the original mantel.  The chandelier appears original too, as does some of the furniture.
This restoration is really pretty.
From the Swan Ball.  The furniture was removed to make room for the jewelry cases to display Mish’s jewels.
The fireplace.
Close up. I wonder if this is lapis or blue marble?
The morning room is going to be restored.  It has marble floors, a bay window and it opens to a terrace.  This room is a stop on the Christmas tour.
The 1934 photo of the recreation room.  What an incredible room!  Look at the furniture.  It looks like a English house in the 18th century.  Most exciting is behind the stove and terracotta brick fireplace is the hidden staircase!   On the far left, notice the suzani fabric on the table!!  Wow!!
1934:  Mabel’s mother slept in this room – through the short door under the stairs.  The two room suite is separated by the black and white marble bathroom.   This room has been turned into an office, but it was restored back to the bedroom.
And here is the office that was once the two bedroom suite.  I wish we could see the fireplace at the left!
1934.  In this room is the original mirror that Mabel bought which was too tall for her house, causing her husband Leslie to build Cheekwood.  Today, the mirror is back at Cheekwood, in the drawing room vestibule, after the restoration.
1934:  The reading room on the second floor.  This amazing room is quite different from the Georgian style.
This girl poses in the Reading Room, an atmospheric, small room on the second floor that will be restored.  With its dark wood beams and stucco mantel, the room is very Spanish in feel!  Wonder what happened to the medallion on the mantel?
Today.  The Reading Room cleared out.
It’s a shame that there is no photograph of the master bedroom suites or bathrooms.
To see more of the Cheekwood, go HERE.
The auction catalogue gives a hint of the decorative scheme for the 2017 Swan Ball designed by Mark Sikes and Sarah Bartholomew.
There were 475 floral arrangements created for the dining tables, along with numerous other arrangements created by The Tulip Tree.
Mark Sikes brought along his biggest fans!  Sarah is in white.  These dresses are all gorgeous!  I love the gingham and the red/pink combination which was custom designed by Mark.
The foyer is decorated for the ball.  Notice the skirted table in striped fabric with trim!!!  OMG!!!  To die for!!!  Those flowers!!!
Too pretty for words.
Gorgeous.  The foyer mantel is decorated with masses of flowers and trellis.
The skirted table with blue and white porcelain.
The guests go up the stairs.
Another view.
A beautiful arrangement in the niche at the top of the foyer stairs.
Guests spilled out onto the Wisteria Arbor off the Drawing Room.  More arrangements decorated the arbor which doubled as a bar.
This young couple posed in front of the second staircase decorated with the trellis motif and flowers in a blue and white bowl.
Appetizers and drinks are served in the grand hallway while guests visit the jewelry display in the dining room.
Off the main hall the guests enter the loggia.   The bar/dinner tent is set up on the lawn right past the loggia.
The loggia decorated by Mark and Sarah.  A skirted table in Mark’s signature blue and white fabric.  A grass wall divides part of the loggia off from the guests.  Topiary balls on the skirted table.  Just beautiful!
Close up of the bench and skirted table.
And another view of the loggia.
Past the loggia the doors open to the tent with the gazebo designed by Mark and Sarah.  This is the area where drinks were served.  Beyond is the dining tent.  Notice how they tented the tent (lol!) with Mark’s signature blue and white fabric – and really Sarah’s too!   The gazebo is covered in wisteria – a nod to the famous Wisteria Arbor outside the Cheekwood drawing room!
The view from the tent looking back towards the loggia.
The party is in full swing.  I wonder how many yards of fabric Mark used?  AND I wonder if they are reusing the fabric???
A view from the loggia into the bar tent and further back to the dining tent.
Hand painted wallpaper was used to decorate the back of the bar area.
At the bar – with another handpainted mural.
Curtains!
The dining tent is a mix of round and rectangular tables.  Chintz fabric skirted the round tables!!!  Round drum chandeliers decorated with greenery.
Another view of the rectangular dining tables skirted in the striped fabric.
Notice how pretty the calligraphy table numbers are.  Rattan votives.  Linen napkins.  Silver mint julep cups.   Very very nice!!!
A mix of flowers at each table.  Just beautiful!!!
A round table, piled with flowers.
A view to the stage at the rear of the tent.
The stage has a blue and white! checkerboard dance floor – and notice the backdrop:  a huge handpainted chinoiserie mural.  Of course!!  This is Mark after all!
Beside this band, Sheryl Crow entertained.
Dinner.
Sarah and Mark with this year’s honoree Carolina Herrera.  Her dress!!!
As guests leave – notice the turquoise blue boxes holding topiary!
The décor?
Genius.   Mark and Sarah outdid themselves!!!
Be sure to visit Sarah and Mark’s blogs for more photos.  Mark has already moved on from the ball.  He is now busy decorating the Newport Coastal Living house all in the blue and white and it is, of course, to die for!
