can any of eridan dickriders here give any argument other than "but karkat is way worse"? karkat being shitty doesn't equal eridan is any better. they're on the same level at best. esp when you all hate HSBC with passion yet brings it all the time to prove karkat is the worst bastard in earth-c. the thing is even before HSBC fuckup eridan already achieved all those red flags in the base webcomic. yet everyone fails to prove what redeemable qualities eridan has while insisting he is salvageable.

he also did absolutely no fucking attempt to revive or care about his dead friends, but had all the time in the world to suck up to meenah and use their ghosts as meathsields. these two facts are not unrelated, there are SO many canon instances of karkat being a selfish entitled asshole.

because speaking of "eridan achieving all the red flags", where the fuck was eridan writing a fucking schedule to "share" feferi with sollux? fucking nowhere, because that's something only canon karkat did, even though he never even dated terezi in the first place. he had all the time in the world to creepily butt in her relationship with dave that was somewhat healthy at the start, but SUDDENLY he was uninterested in getting involved when it came to defending Terezi from gamzee, HIS MOIRAIL, abusing her? and he said he knew about them for a long fucking time too?

eridan at least apologized to feferi for killing her through fefetasprite, while all that karkat did was apologizing for terezi for not being good enough to choose him instead of dave and making their break up all about him, all while also chastizing her for not breaking up with gamzee even though it was his literal single fucking duty to keep him pacified and he was only alive because karkat stopped kanaya from killing him.

Climate change prompts Alaska fish to change breeding behavior

One of Alaska’s most abundant freshwater fish species is altering its breeding patterns in response to climate change. This could impact the ecology of northern lakes, which already acutely feel the effects of a changing climate.

That’s the main finding of a recent University of Washington study published in Global Change Biology that analyzed reproductive patterns of three-spine stickleback fish over half a century in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region. The data show that stickleback breed earlier and more often each season in response to earlier spring ice breakup and longer ice-free summers.

While several papers have speculated that conditions brought on by a warming climate may allow animals to breed more often in a single year, this has only been empirically shown in insects. This study is the first to document multiple breeding cycles for fish in a single season due to climate change, said lead author Rachel Hovel, a postdoctoral researcher in the UW’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences.

“The exciting thing about this paper is that it shows, for the first time, the emergence of multiple breeding in a vertebrate as a response to climate change,” Hovel said. “Climate change literature features many predictions and vulnerability assessments, but we don’t have many opportunities to actually observe species’ responses over time, as this is very data-intensive. Our ability to detect multiple breeding in fish is attributed to our comprehensive and high-quality long-term dataset.”

alright some basic concepts that i'm going to explain just in case:

Evolution is the process in which species go through changes to their morphology, behavior or any other heritable characteristics.

A species is a group of organisms that are able to produce fertile offspring AND/OR share similar morphology/behaviour/habitat niche/dna sequence

There is no clear consensus on WHAT an species is and how to organize them because evolution happens slowly over the course of a great number of generations, so clean cut limits cannot be put to this concept. Here's an example:

We have three different species: Coyotes (Canis latrans), grey wolves (Canis lupus) and golden jackals (Canis aureus).

These three animals are a perfect example on how non functional the concept of a species is because they break all of the guidelines needed to follow to clasify a species as independant from the rest.

So all three of these animals are able to interbreed and produce fertile offspring, thats the first and most basic requirement a species has. Furthermore, for these animals to interbreed they must share habitat, so that's another common trait. They are morphologically different, but this is a slippery slope as animals belonging to the same species can have extreme differences in morphology (think dog breeds). They share similar or the same behaviors and they are very closely related genetically (reason why they can produce fertile offspring). And still, they are just different enough for us to be able to say ok, this is a jackal, this is a wolf and this a coyote, and theyre similar but I can tell them apart.

So once we know species as a concept is vague and why, here's to what you were asking about. As you said, evolution happens gradually and, most of the time, slowly. This is because the small individual variations need time (and luck) to stack up and become extreme enough they become noticeable, plus they need to eventually extend to the rest of that animal's population. When these changes are noticeable but not enough to classify that group of individuals as a new species theyre put in a subspecies, as a variation of the main/original species. Smaller but clearly diferenciated variations in a subspecies are put together in races. If these variations are not clearly put together in small communities and are just natural variations of the main species theyre called morphs.

What you mention in your post is called rapid evolution/rapid speciation. Sometimes animals will start to divert from their original species in a much much shorter span of time. They may do this in a linear way in which the base species A evolves into species B or they may do this in a much more expansive way called adaptive radiation in which species A evolves into species B, C, D, E, F, G, and so on.

The span of time is still very slow to human standards: what I mentioned before about fishes was about European Flounder (Platichthys flesus) which are believed to have gone through the fastest evolutionary proccess known yet on fishes ∼2,400 generations ago. Here's the paper on this specific case [X]. In 2016 a species of Sickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus) was brought to attention as it was noticed it was splitting into two different species "in real time", over the course of the last 150 years. These numbers sound like a lot, because they are!! But in an evolutionary context, this is nothing. These mutations are stacking up and settling in the population dizzingly fast.

So is it possible for one single organism to be born with a large set of mutations, or with one big and drastic mutation, or for it to reproduce like crazy and change the entire species? Yes, kinda, and most animal variation inside a species comes from this kind of situation, but the scale in which this happens is extremely slow, these mutations might occur instead in several individuals that may not be individually identified, and nothing tells you these mutations might even be positive to the species after all, so they could very well pop up for some time and then go extinct.

okay question. so evolution is a million little mutations towards adaption that ripple out into the population over a long period of time, right?

has there ever been a reported case where one specific animal hit the genetics lottery and got like, idk, 10 different evolution mutation points instead of 0.001 and had a very drastic effect on the development speed of the species? like where you could literally trace back modern adaption to some random guy who fucked like a champ 50yrs ago or smtn? or would it at that point be incompatible for reproduction...?

hi! I understand why you’ve made this blog, but then again I also don’t at the same time? Like. I understand why you hate davekat (I ship them but they are VERY overrated) but also in my eyes ships don’t have to make sense. This could just be me being a multishipper and literally came up with pun ship names for almost every trolls x karkat (my favorite being Eridan x Karkat which I called Selfish shellfish) last night. So can you sort of care to explain this?? Sorry!!

Karkat x Eridan is a good ship too. It is definitely better than Davekat. Shellfish/Selfish is also a good ship name. The play-on wording for it makes sense. MSPA Booru calls them Sickleback in reference to the Stickleback fish.

Karkat and Eridan works since they do have some history with each other as close friends. Sure Karkat may dislike Eridan's attitude at times, but he still helps him in things like love advice. He is one of the few people that tolerate Eridan. It is also interesting that Eridan is close with Karkat despite all his speech on the hemospectrum being a thing. Eridan never questions about Karkat's blood even after it was supposedly revealed by the time they were on the meteor. It shows that Eridan would have never really intended on killing land dwellers. I think the two could help each other out in that Karkat helps Eridan to become a better and less shitty person. Have him think carefully about individuals as people and their feelings when it comes to romance or friendships. Eridan in turn, would help Karkat out of his self loathing and probably help him be direct to vent out what he feels. I even think the true moirailligence was suppose to be with Karkat and Eridan. Of course, redrom or blackrom could work as well for Erikat.
