The existence of Siegfeld jhs as specifically future stage girls is one of its most fascinating themes.

The central conflict that they all must overcome is finding the determination to become stage girls.

They have all in one way or another already failed. What awaits them now is to exit the stage, unless they can find the resolution to decide to keep standing on stage.

As future stage girls they face extinction, they lack brilliance, and are weighed heavy by their failures. However stage girls can always improve and be reborn. If they can make that step, find that courage, they can continue to stand on stage and can overcome it all.

Throughout all of Regalia we see their failures and struggles made apparent. Akira antagonizes and goads them. It is clearly spelled out that their life on the stage is going to end.

They lose in Revue Siegfeld. But ultimately by then it didn’t matter. Because all of them simply decided that they were willing to stand on stage. From there, a stage girl can do anything.

Elle’s farewell message makes it clear, “A revue is not once-in-a-lifetime. As long as you don’t give up, you will have as many chances as you want.”

Regalia is fascinating because it is a story focused on becoming stage girls rather than being stage girls. Especially because through the somewhat outside lens the many harmful aspects of performance and pressure are made abundantly clear as they are forced onto characters who are the youngest in the entire series.

Regalia does not pull punches. But ultimately the message is that those pressures can’t actually stop you. They are real, and harmful (as revue starlight shows extensively), but as long as you can accept that being a stage girl will mean facing them, and still choose to stand on stage that’s enough.

The only death to fear is before you are reborn. Simply resolving to be a stage girl is enough.

ok short answer! shiro's from a series of stageplays and now EOS-d gacha game. long answer? cracks knuckles

ok so shiro's from the franchise revue starlight, i dont remember if ive rambled to you about it before but it currently has an anime, two anime movies, the previously mentioned EOS gacha game, a visual novel(?) game (which i have not yet played), and several stageplays (more of which are still in production!!). the franchise focuses around the characters from 5 main schools: Seisho, Seiran, Siegfeld, Rinmeikan, and Frontier. Seisho is like the "main" school and the characters from there are the main focus in the anime the first couple stageplays and I think the VN as well, but the other characters get a good amount of focus between the game and the stageplays.

ok. shiro is from siegfeld, specifically the junior high subsection which, while they do show up in the game, most of their story is contained within the Siegfeld Junior High stageplays. they have 3 that are out rn and a 4th one that has been announced! they also recently got announced a collection manga which i am suuuuper excited for!!

ok!! if you wanna get into all this i would say that while the anime and stageplays have different plots I would watch the anime first. it's only like 13 eps so its short! as for the movies the titles are Revue Starlight Rondo Rondo Rondo, which is basically a recap of the series but w a few extra scenes. i can link you a vid w all the new scenes compiled if/when you get there and as for the second movie, Gekijouban, it takes place after the events of the anime and tbh some of the stageplays as well so tbh you don't have to watch it before getting into the stageplays but i would anyway bc its so good. trust me

now! for the stageplays there's a post right here about the order in which to watch them! doesnt include the most recent two which is the two most recent siegfeld jhs plays but it covers most of them!! theres also a couple notes in the post about chronological order etc in the post and it really helped me out when i started watching them this year!

lastly the now EOS-d mobile game, i personally never actually played it but the stories are all translated and on the wiki if you ever wanna look through them! i've been going through them recently and really enjoying them!

8. ive thought about this way too much. siegfeld jhs as australian bush ballad waltzing matilda. stella is the jolly swagman ryoko as the jumbuck and shiro, minku, kuina as the troopers, led by shiro. this is only half a joke

11. oh what do i even choose. from the stageplays i think i would go feral if we got shiro/stella or futaba/suzu kiss animated. from relive i think it would be really awesome to see any of the arcana arcadia in-character scenes animated to the level of gekijouban... especially any of the scenes with tower hikari in them because i feel like they could get really imaginative with it. there's a lot of implied spectacle there in the visual novel format but seeing it in the animated medium would be incredible

for comparison's sake tried to be as literal as i could. honestly the differences between the onomatopoeia for minku dangling and what adjective shiro uses are incredibly negligible, but i tried to exaggerate how the nuances feel to me. might be wrong. doesn't matter

the meat of the joke that makes it hard to translate is minku is going puraaaaan = onomatopoeia for dangling idly, and this gets put into Frau Platin (puratin) in the middle to make Frau Purāntin. doesn't work well for puns in other languages (i do love the tl by TsuNaMy_WaVe that says Frauplatin-side down don't think i could come up w something better)

so the tw translation of "frau platin" puts the platin part first and frau part after: 白金皇君 bai jin huang jun = platinum emperor mr./sir/etc they put horizontal bar after the platinum and before the Emperor +title part so it's like. the emperor of platinum and ALSO the horizontal bar ?? 😭 funny way to reverse translate this translation while screwing it up even more would be "Frau Platin-um Bar" or something

this joke is about stella not knowing much about manzai bc she's not from japan and wanting to be the tsukkomi sooo bad even though she's fundamentally NOT. not enough space to pack this info in a tl without confusing people who don't know anything about manzai—you would at least have to have some sort of t/n about What this is about like "Stella is trying Japanese manzai comedy" and i doubt they wanted to commit to that.

first of all love how in this one shiro accuses her of saying the goofiest thing ever. second thing: rabbit hole time, sorry.

so what was used in place of "saying nandeyanen" is 딴죽 걸다 (ddanjuk geolda). the etymology is 딴 (ddan) from 다른 (dareun) meaning different, and 족 (jok, from 足) meaning foot which became 죽 (juk). 딴죽 (ddanjuk) is a move in ssireum and taekkyeon where one person kicks their opponent's calf and trips them so they fall.

from this, the phrase eventually came to generally mean interfering with something. in 1998, the online newspaper called 딴지일보 (Ddanzi Ilbo) was founded and through this website the term 딴지 (ddanji), which was a non-standard variant of ddanjuk, eventually became the more popular term. they were (and are sometimes still) used interchangeably, but afaik ddanji is way more common.

in 2014, ddanji was officially acknowledged as a standard term with a slightly different meaning from ddanjuk. when ddanji is used, it means to actively get in the way of something, and when ddanjuk is used, it means to do/say something different from what was originally planned (ie changing plans, backing out, breaking a promise).

however, it's still kind of used interchangeably and some people may still think that only ddanjuk is the "correct" term; on the namuwiki page for ddanjuk (where ddanji just gets a cursory mention) it says it is often used when translating "tsukkomi" (verb) from japanese, but i would argue that ddanji is probably the more accurate and common translation, at least now.

less intensive rabbit hole: "what the hell" in chinese here is 什么鬼 (shen me gui) which literally means what kind of [ghost/monster/etc=strange] is that?? it's originally from southern chinese dialect, where the standard versions would be 搞(的)什么鬼 (gao (de) shen me gui, what strange thing are you doing) or 什么鬼东西 (shen me gui dong xi, what strange thing is that).

a term used as a retort, it became very popular after being used in the online show Baozou Big News Events and is now widely used for expressing curiosity as well

by the way, Ddanzi Ilbo and Baozou Big News Events are both like, web content that do/did a lot of political/news satire isn't that such a funny coincidence? i'll conclude by saying my funy slang ver at the top is unfortunately too recent and too not political satire media influenced to hang out with those 2 but alas.

I’m thinking about Siegfeld jhs’s existence as future stage girls, and especially, as being prophesied for extinction.

Revue Starlight is incredibly optimistic about what a stage girl can do, and I think in that sense I might’ve overlooked some of what that ‘doomed to extinction’ entails.

I just haven’t been able to escape the detail about faculty being referenced in Remains, and specifically Romana’s seeming lack of it.

Without any larger spoilers for the plot of Remains, Siegfeld jhs go through a l o t. Especially coming off of the heels of Rebellion in which they also went through a l o t. It is truly a treacherous path that they are walking.

And for what purpose? To be confronted with their inevitable doom? The life of a stage girl is oh so fleeting, and to become one they must truly be willing to lay down their lives for the stage.

But that’s wrong isn’t it? These are the youngest members of the entire cast. They are middle schoolers. They are 14!! To have to face this, just to stand on stage?

Being a stage girl is a harsh existence, but should they be forced to endure so much? Surely it can’t be right to be abandoned by the adults who are meant to guide them amidst a blood thirsty balancing act like Romana.

Stella’s past in Germany… the weight of being a Siegfeld is too heavy for her to bear.

The more I think about the way Romana and Siegfeld jhs are forced to face the same pressures, both Mikoto and Stella being demanded to be perfect, the more it seems apparent that ultimately the greatest harm is the attitude that they need to be treated like this in order to be stage girls.

Just like the top star and the auditions.

This is wrong.

I think there’s a lot of significance to Stella who cares so deeply about friendship and bonds, despite her tragic past being at the center of Siegfeld jhs. Even through everything that she faces she cares for everyone most of all. It’s that kindness that carries all of them forward.

It is the ones who decided they were doomed for extinction that are wrong. You can never write off someone’s potential like that. If they all continue to want to live then surely they can.
