1. GENERAL TERMS

All drawings will include a subtle sign or watermark that you may not remove.

I reserve the right to record the drawing process and post it on my YouTube at any time.

Prices are subject to change with notice.

I have the right to reject any order that I do not feel comfortable drawing for any reason.

All art will be protected to fight against Generative AI.

I do not consent to my work being fed into Generative AI, DO NOT FEED MY ART INTO ANY GENERATIVE AI PROGRAMS.

2. PAYMENT

Currency accepted is USD and can be paid through PayPal or Cash App.

Commissions can be paid either 100% upfront or split 50% upfront and 50% after sketch approval.

Don't send me any payment before I have agreed to give you a slot and requested you to send me the payment.

3. PROCESS AND DELIVERY

I will notify you when I have started on your commission and you, therefore, lose the rights to a refund (see point 7 further below for more info on refunds)

While I am working on your commission, I will check in at various stages to ensure it is what you want.

The amount of communication depends on the complexity of the work.

During the communication, you will see the work-in-progress and these images will include a watermark.

The time it takes to finish your commission varies: 1 week - 3 months depending on factors such as health, the complexity of the commissioned piece, and other work.

If anything comes up that will slow the progress of the initially estimated delivery time I will send you an email informing you of the delay.

Once the piece is compete you will receive the full-resolution image along with a web-friendly size. Note that there is no physical product.

4. REVISIONS

Three(3) rounds of revisions to the commissioned piece are included in the price.

A fee will be added for each additional revision on the commission.

If you wish for me to change something in the drawing you have previously approved, there will be a fee to change it. The amount of the additional charge depends on the change you want me to make.

If your reference is unclear from the start, changes will come at an extra fee. If I find your references to be unclear, this will be communicated in our emails.

5. COPYRIGHT / USAGE POLICY

I, Hollowbackg1rl (the artist), claim the rights to the produced drawing, not the buyer. Therefore I am allowed to use the copyrighted artwork to:

Display it on any and all platforms

Promote myself with it on any and all platforms of my choosing

Publish books with it (artbooks, etc.)

The buyer is allowed to:

Use the commissioned piece for personal use unless agreed otherwise (you may upload it on all of your social media profiles, forums, etc.)

Print the artwork and claim the character(s) as your own, but not the artwork itself.

Use the artwork to promote yourself. You are not forced to give me credit when you post it but it is appreciated.

Use the artwork on your YouTube channel and in monetized videos as long as the artwork itself is not the main subject for the earnings.

The following is considered copyright infringement:

Reproducing/using the copyrighted artwork commercially

Claiming the artwork as your own

Removing my signature from the artwork

Altering the artwork without my consent

I reserve the full rights to the image and it's use/distribution unless otherwise agreed upon (rights to the image for commercial use may be purchased at any time).

6. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

I will do everything I can within reason to make my customers happy!

If you have a problem with anything in regards to the commissioned piece, communicate that to me right away so we can find a solution together.

If you do not want me to post your commission publicly, we can discuss this before I accept your commission.

7. REFUND / CANCELLATION POLICY

The buyer is not allowed a refund once I begin work on the commission.

If for any reason I am unable to start your commission, you will receive a full refund.

If you cancel your order before I begin work on it, you can get a full refund.

If you are getting a refund, do not request a PayPal chargeback. I will transfer the money back to you myself.

If you request a PayPal chargeback at any point when you were not allowed to ask for a refund you will lose all before-mentioned rights to the commissioned piece and I will retain the full right to profit further from it in any way. I will decline the chargeback and supply PayPal with our conversations in which we talk about the commission as evidence that I have completed work for you. Furthermore, you will be blacklisted from commissioning me again.

If the buyer breaks any of the terms stated above, they will lose all aforementioned rights to the artwork commissioned from me, Hollowbackg1rl (the artist). I will retain the right to profit further from the commissioned artwork in any way I see fit. These terms are non-negotiable.

What do you get?

Drafts/mockups that you must decide which one I should continue with (depending on the complexity of the commission there may be fewer or more drafts within reason)

Sketch and/or final sketches that you must accept before I continue the work

Insight and involvement in color palette (depending on the complexity of the commissioned piece)

Full-resolution file of final drawing and a smaller version for internet upload. Final file formats are usually PNG.

By purchasing a commission from me (Hollowbackg1rl) you agree to be purchasing my services only. These terms are non-negotiable.

You retain the rights to the intellectual property (IP).

Lots of good information and resources to help you with this event, as well as information on other events which I run.

What is the Dune Mini Bang? A Mini Bang (or Big Bang) is a collaboration between writers and artists who work together to produce fandom-inspired content, in this case Dune, and share it with the world. A writer and an artist are paired up, the writer well writes and the artist will create some form of visual content to go along with their story. The work is then posted together on a selected date at the end of the writing period.

Where can I post my fics/art? Stories and art can be posted to your own personal journal, Tumblr, ff-net, AO3, or wherever you like. For those of you with AO3 accounts, we will set up a collection that will go live on the day of the posting. If you don’t currently have an AO3 account but would like one, you can contact the mods for an invitation code to see if they have any available. You can also add yourself to the AO3 Invites Request queue.

For posting on other social media platforms, such as tumblr or twitter, please tag duneminibang2023 and @dunefandomevents , spread the word!

When do I start posting? We will open the posting date claims ahead of the close date. How many days it will be spread out will depend on how many writers we have signed up. If your story is multi-chaptered it does not need to be posted all at once, you should start posting chapters early so the story can be listed as completed by your posting date. You will be able to select a preference for where in the queue you are but ultimately your posting date will be selected by the moderation team.

What platform are these being advertised/posted on? AO3 will host the main archive collection - The collection will be created and ready to go for the Sept 3rd posting start date. Tumblr - Used for advertising signups and after posting starts we will cross post all stories to a masterlist. Twitter - Used for advertising signups and after posting starts we will be cross posting - Linking AO3 collection / Tumblr masterpost. Reddit - Will be used for advertising signups.

The only account we really recommend to have is AO3 as it is the main collection but so long as you have somewhere you can post your story when it is completed and link it to us that is fine. If you do not already have an AO3 account and would like one please contact us on the discord server or send an email to [email protected] and we will see if anyone has an invitation code available.

What if I have issues or concerns with my artist/author? Sometimes authors and artists do not get along and this may cause problems with working together. If this happens to be the case with you, please email or contact the mods on Discord and we will try to do what we can so that everyone has a chance to have fun!

If you have not heard from your author/artist in some time after trying to contact them, you can reach out to us via email/discord and we will try to get in touch with them for you.

Extensions? I am pretty attached to the idea of starting posting on the anniversary of the Dune Premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sept 3rd but if you really really need one please email the mods as soon as possible. One easy option would be to select one of the later posting dates but if that doesn't work we may allow a few extra days.

Can I drop out? We have high hopes that everybody who signs up can actually finish the round and share in the joy of the reveal with us, but real life can unfortunately get in the way and we completely understand! If you feel like you just cannot finish in time and no amount of assistance from us can help you, just let us know by asap! Ideally we would wish to know before artist claims have opened.

Is it possible to be banned? Yes it is. The following events will result in being removed from the event and a one event ban on next year; Lying about your age in order to gain access to the 18+ content Hate on another participant for their ship/character/content - we are allowing ALL content for the mini bang. Hate on another participant for any reason really Failure to meet the event requirements

WRITER FAQ

What are the word count requirements? Stories for this event should have a minimum word count of 5000 words. There is no official maximum word count but keep in mind the story must be completed and ready for posting by the due date. Ideally we are asking for the stories in this event to be brand new, started and finished during the course of the event. If you would like to enter with an existing WIP we ask that you do not post any updates to the story until the event has finished.

Allowable story types; Prose, screenplay, poetry, podfic, or a translation of an existing story. One-shot or multi chaptered. So long as the 5k word count is reached then it is good to go.

What is Allowed? It is open to all duniverses/adaptations, any rating or pairing. This includes OCs and Y/N stories though we want to warn authors that those kinds of stories have historically been hard to get an artist claim. If you are able to provide references such as face claims that would be great, or if after consulting with your artists they may choose not to include the OCs at all. These extra details should be submitted with your snippet submissions. Open to AUs or crossovers with other fandom universes but we require that the main character or cast of characters be from Dune.

Ex 1. Original Main Character set in the Dune Universe with the cast of Dune characters along for the ride. A-OK. Ex 2. Paul Atreides gets teleported to the Star Wars Universe and is now a Jedi. A-OK.

If you are not sure if your concept will be allowed please feel free to message mods ahead of time.

What is Not Allowed? At this time we are saying yes to everything. ((except the scenario mentioned above)) Yes, EVERYTHING (even incest pairings), so long as your story is appropriately tagged. Like tag all the things, over tag, cannot have too many tags. Please keep in mind if you are using a pairing or a trope/kink which is considered controversial that you might receive negative feedback after posting or struggle to get an artist claim.

How many stories can I submit? We are limiting entries to one per writer but your story may be multi-chaptered so long as all chapters are completed by September 1st and has been fully uploaded by the assigned posting date.

What are check-ins? These are a way for us to see what you’ve been up to and for you to make sure you’re still on track. It will give you a little nudge/reminder if you need it, but they are not compulsory. A form will be emailed out to the address you provided at sign up and posted to the discord server.

We will not be mandating a certain percentage completed between each check in but a good goal point would be; check in 1 = 30% story written, check in 2 = 60% and rough draft due = 80%

What are snippets? We are requesting 2 snippets from each author, 500 words maximum each for artists to use for artist claims. They can be from any section of your story. Literally, just copy and paste a few paragraphs into a document and send it to us. You should also include any visual references needed if your story contains an original character which you may want your artist to incorporate. They can be submitted via email anytime after the event starts until the snippet due date on June 30th.

Once claims have been finished we will be emailing, and posting on discord the final pair ups.

This year we are allowing Writers to find an artist prior to registration and have their concept pre-claimed. If this is the case then a snippet is not required. You just need to provide us with the artist's name when you sign up and they will need to complete the artist sign up when the time comes.

Rough draft requirements? For the rough drafts, stories should be at least 80% complete. You will not have to turn them in to us, just assure us that you are at that point. Anything less is at the discretion of the mods and those authors should speak to one of the mods asap. We will help you as much as possible to ensure the story gets completed on time.

What is, and do I need, a beta? A beta is basically a person who goes over your work to make sure that there are no spelling/grammatical errors and they can even be of assistance in helping you with story lines, etc. It is highly recommended that a beta looks over your work before posting. If you are having trouble finding a beta, try the event discord server. Don't wait too long to go looking though!

ARTIST FAQ

Minimum/Maximum requirements for art? There is no strict minimum, but we do ask artists to remember that the authors are writing a minimum of 5,000 words and your artwork should reflect that. You can do anything you like, including banners, wallpapers, icons, mixes, vids, gif sets, picspams, etc. Suggested guidelines for art are 500x500px (or equivalent of smaller pieces like banner + spacers, cover + icons, etc.) for traditional art, digital art, and manips around 3 - 5hrs; 2 minutes for vids; 10 songs + cover art for mixes; and 6 images for gif sets and picspams. We also ask that when you are in contact with the author, you work with them to see if there is anything specific they would like (i.e. a wallpaper, book cover, etc.). The art is your work, but having ideas doesn’t hurt!

At this time we will NOT be allowing AI Art. There are a lot of reasons for this. If you have questions please send a mod a message!

What are art claims? Artists sign-ups and art claims are the same thing; we use one form for both things, and that way the artists don’t sign up for an event they may not end up participating in. Writers will have submitted 2 short excerpts from their story for artists to read and get a feel for the work. It is based on a 'first come, first served’ and artists may choose up to three potential stories (in case their first choice is unavailable). If there are more stories than artists, there will be a second round of claims wherein artists may choose a second story to work with. And on until all stories are claimed for art.

If a fic up for claiming is rated explicit (R, NC-17, etc.), please only claim the story if you are over 18 years of age. Some authors may be uncomfortable working with underage artists on explicit works. We do not verify ages in any way for the bang, so this is solely on the honor system. Artists are encouraged to join the discord server and follow along with everyone a head of the artist claims being opened. We will be reposting the FAQs frequently and posting the links to sign ups closer to the open date! Keep an eye out here on the blog or join us over on discord! Things are a little quite atm but pick up closer to the event! Feel free to join even just as a spectator!

TOURPOCALYPSE - ARENA TICKET ADVICE

Alright friends, as promised, I said I would give my best advice in light of what we’ve learned with the Loupocalypse, combined with Poptopia, and HSLOT Arena version. Some of these are the same as small venue.

GET ON THE MAILING LISTS - If you go to Niall’s TOUR page, you see a spot to RSVP which takes you to Bandisintown. Personally, I use Bandisintown AND Songkick. Both have good notifications and different info for concerts. But you also want to be on the actual email list. Go to Niall/Harry/Louis/Liam/Zayn’s websites and make sure you’ve signed up. Niall is showing a Live Nation Presale (at least in some cities), so my guess is that you want to sign-up on the Live Nation website in the top left.

BUILD A TEAM - Enlist non-fandom and fandom friends alike. Can a non-fandom friend take 30 minutes out of their day? I realize it’s not the current situation, but I definitely got LOTS of folks to sign up for codes for Arena Harry. Do you have fandom friends in different time zones? The more folks you have trying, the better the chances.

KNOW WHEN YOUR PRESALES START - Niall’s seem to start on November 7th at 10 am local time. But I’d keep checking if it were me.

START 30 MINUTES EARLY - Get ready. Get in your headspace. Make sure all your details are right. There are waiting rooms. They start between 10 and 15 minutes before go time. But get your head in the game. Sing some High School Musical if you want to.

MAKE SURE YOUR PAYMENT SHIT IS RIGHT - Check your credit card and address in your Ticketmaster/Live Nation account. Don’t fuck with that shit in the moment. I got all the way to the end for Glasto tickets and fucked it up because I didn’t have the right credit card info. Don’t make this mistake.

DON’T FUCK WITH A BAD INTERNET CONNECTION - if you have bad wifi, go somewhere with good wifi. Be careful on public connections because you will be transferring credit card data.

PAY ATTENTION TO TICKET LIMITS - Ticketmaster will cross check every bit of your information. So, don’t go over the limits for an individual human for tickets. They’ll check CC, address, name, email, phone. And they’re looking for scalpers. Don’t get caught in the cross-fire. Currently, the posted limit seems to be 8 tickets PER HOUSEHOLD per show. It does NOT say OVERALL for Niall (which is what it said for Louis). But you can check by clicking MORE INFO.

DECIDE ON WHAT YOU WANT - In an arena environment, it’s much less likely that you just straight-up won't get tickets. Like, WAY less likely. I don’t like to speak in absolutes, but I really don’t think that’s the issue. If you want pit or first couple rows, keep at it. I did Poptopia for almost 2 hours and they released better seats later. So, my advice would be, don’t settle for something you don’t want. Ticketmaster seems to be playing on our anxiety. The fear is that we won’t get good seats so then we take the first good seats that we can manage. Then, we keep trying. And when they release better seats, we have to resell the first ones, driving the prices up. (I’m sure I’ll get follow-up questions on this, happy to answer).

ONE ACCOUNT PER QUEUE - This is different. If you are in the same queue with the same account, you’ll get kicked out. And if you were logged in as one and then logged in as another, it doesn’t always realize. So, I would restart your computer and your phone. And if you have 2 accounts, login to one on each device.

KEEP TRYING - You’ll get the, sorry a fan beat you to those seats. Keep trying. It takes longer to get what you want in an arena show.

ASK FOR THINGS - If you don’t get tickets and you feel like you want to cry, talk about it on Tumblr. Let people know you’re looking. I got a second ticket for SF Harry because I was open about needing one. I have found this fandom to be incredibly generous.

REMEMBER RESALE TICKETS MAY BE CHEAPER - All but the best seats will likely be cheaper closer to time. Pit tickets won’t be. The first several rows won’t be.

How to download the tickets and what to do on the day of the live

Even though we've already bought our tickets, it's not enough with the email we've received, we still have a few steps left to get our tickets. The way we'll receive them will depend on the purchase method we've used.

Downloading ID-s basic tickets

For a few years now, SID tickets are not printed anymore, we'll get them through Ticket board. Luckily for us, this website is foreigner-friendly (lol) and has an English version.

We won't have to do anything, two or three weeks before the live, SID's STAFF will create an account for us and update the details of the lives. In order to log in, we have to click on "my page". Our user ID will be our email address and the password will be our birthday in YEARMONTHDAY format.

Next, we'll click on "application/purchasing history" and we'll see a list of all the lives for which we have tickets, although we won't be able to do anything for the time being.

A few days before the live (between 3 and 5 days), we'll receive an email letting us know that our tickets ara available.

If we log in again on Ticket Board, we'll be able to see the details about the tickets and, at the end, we'll have the option to download our ticket and write the personal information about our partner (I don't have pictures of that, but they'll basically be asking their name and email, it's a really simple proccess).

We can't download the ticket to our mobile phone storage, it's online. Also, we can't take an screenshot, we must show them the website, since they'll be stamping the screen with a special device (I don't really know how it works, but when the stamp is near the screen, it somehow sticks on the ticket). For this reason, it's VITAL that we have access to the internet, since they first need to check our name in the details of the ticket and then they'll have to go back and stamp it.

Downloading LINE ticket tickets

About LINE, the proccess is much simpler. A few days before the live we'll receive our ticket on a LINE message and, on the day of the live, the ticket will be resent at the time of the door opening.

If we click on the message, a description of the ticket will pop up and, if we scroll down, we can open the ticket. My advice, though, is for you not to touch anything and let the STAFF do it. I opened my ticket and, in order to validate it, you just have to touch the screen, so I validated it myself by mistake before going in the livehouse and it's not possible to open it again. When I explained what had happened to the STAFF members, they understood what the problem was and said nothing, but just in case, show them the description of the ticket and let them do the rest.

Anatomy of a ticket

Although Ticket board website is available in English, tickets aren't, so we'll see a couple of pictures to understand the relevant parts.

1- Ticket information. They'll have to access that to check your data. 2- Date of the live, opening time, starting time. 3- Ticket type and number, we need that to know where we have to sit or when we have to go in. 4- Stamp that will appear after our ticket has been validated.

In the case of the tickets I've used, the ticket type was "standing", which was the only option available, even for VIP tickets. The letter that appears right after that informs us about which our group is in order to access the venue. The first people to go in will be the VIP (in case there are any), then A, then B... The numbers after the letter tell us the order inside each of those groups. In the Ticket board ticket, in group A, I had to go in in the 19th place; whereas in the LINE ticket ticket, I had to go in in the 53rd place of group B. However, most of SID's lives take place in halls, so we won't be standing, there will be seats. Therefore, in the ticket, we'll get the area where we are supposed to sit, the row and the seat number, like a cinema ticket.

What to do on the day of the live

Even though I imagine that the procedure will vary depending on the live we are attending to, the place where it's held or whether we have a VIP ticket, I'll briefly share my experience. The events I went to took place in livehouses, so they were a lot smaller and there was less people, but I think the procedure to go in is a bit more complicated (in the case of halls, I think you just have to stand in line in whatever order and just look for your spot once you are inside, but it's not like that for livehouses). If you don't know the place, I recommend arriving a little earlier, since some are clearly visible, but others are a bit more hidden (for example, Club Junk Box at Sendai has a sign outside, but it's located in the basement of the building and that's where you'll have to go to stand in the line or buy goods). It is not neccessary for you to stay there for hours, a lot of people just arrive 15 minutes before the opening time. It really doesn't matter when you arrive since you'll have to get in in the order that appears on your ticket. It's true that the sale of goods starts a couple of hours before the opening time (in any case, either on the website or by email, they'll let you know all the details so you know when you have to be there), so if you want to buy something, you can go a few hours ahead (there really were queues to buy merchandise, so I would recommend arriving with a bit of time, also so that you know for sure whatever you want won't be sold out) and leave again until the opening time. Although the STAFF probably won't speak English, there is usually a paper with the goods or they'll be on display, so you can just point at whatever you want. Plus, they'll be showing you the total amount on a calculator so it'll be easy for you to know how much to pay. Most venues have lockers where you can leave your stuff (there were none at vanvan4 in Kanazawa, but they gave us some bags and numbers so that the STAFF could keep our things safe). Normally they'll be between 300 and 500 yen. They are quite big, so your bags, sweaters, etc. will fit. In case there are no lockers at the venue, you might find some at train stations. If we have a VIP ticket, we'll get an email stating when we can go to pick up our passes (for example, the live started at 19:00 and we had to pick them up at 15:30) and the schedule of the VIP event (the VIP tickets for AKi included the rehearsal, an acoustic live and a meet&greet from 16:15 to 17:30, even though we had to be there at 16:00 to go in the livehouse).

The meet&greet was only with Aki (the other band members were not there) and we just went in order, one by one, to the corridor that gave access to the venue, where Aki was waiting to meet us. In general, everyone was quite fast and didn't stop much, but my guess is that if you stay for too long someone from the STAFF will tell you that you have to keep moving. While you are there, only Aki and the STAFF members are around, the other fans will be waiting outside, so it's kind of private. At the opening time, we have to be ready with our ticket and passport in hand, because they'll be checking it to make sure that the name on the ticket is the same as the name in the passport. If we have an ID-s ticket, it's better for us to carry as well the FC card with us. I was never asked for it, but it says on the website that they might want to see it, so it's better to be safe. At this time, someone from the STAFF will stand at the door and start yelling the numbers (and don't think they'll do that in a loud voice, so pay attention). First, they'll yell the group that is going to go in (VIP, A, B...) and then they'll start yelling the numbers one by one (they'll do it in Japanese, so you either ask someone to let you know when it's your turn or you'll have to learn the basics about numbers). At the beginning, they'll be going slow, but if there are unsold tickets, instead of saying the numbers one by one, they might do it ten by ten (it happened to me at Osaka, since there were not many people in the B group). When the person from the STAFF says your number, you'll have to approach them, they'll check the number on the ticket and you'll have to go with another STAFF member who will check your passport and stamp your ticket. Finally, since it's a livehouse, you'll have to pay 500 or 600 yen for a drink you'll be given at the end of the live. It is not optional, you have to pay for that even if you don't want the drink, so keep that in mind. However, if you have a VIP, the drink is included in the ticket fee. Once inside, you can stand wherever you want as long as there is an empty space. If you want to be far from the stage, it's okay if you stay at the back, although people usually respect your vital space and you won't have a person stuck right next to you, so it's not really uncomfortable to be in the middle even if you don't like crowded places (my friend doesn't like them and she said it was okay). Also, some people will just voluntarily stay away from the stage, so it's no problem if you arrive later and want to go closer to the stage (for example, at Osaka, the venue had two levels and a lot of people were in the second even though there was still some space in the first. When I approached them to ask if it was okay for me to go down to the first level, they said I could). Now that you are in your spot, just enjoy the live.

2020 Postmortem: 10 Questions

2020. A year that did not go as planned. Okay, I am massively downplaying just what a complete shitshow it was. The best way I can describe is that episode of Seinfeld where George declares it to be the "Summer of George", only to have him in a hospital bed towards the end, disappointed that it didn't work out.

When I started writing this year's 10 questions piece, I wasn't sure how it would form considering most of the year was spent at home, trying to survive. But the result is the longest 10 questions to date. Guess I had a lot to get out there.

What made up your body of work this year? Which parts are you most proud of?

I should start with one of the major elephants in the room. Since March 12th, I have been working from home. The day before, all of us at work got an email from the home office in the United Kingdom saying the offices there and in the U.S. would be closed for a time to protect employees from the growing spread of COVID-19. Many of us thought we would be back in the office in a month or so. Oh boy, how wrong we were considering later that day, news would come out that Tom Hanks and his wife contracted the virus and the NBA would suspend their season after a player tested positive.

Not being in an office has some significant downsides for me. For one, it was the place where I interacted with people outside of close family. Now, the only real interaction I do with co-workers is either over email or Microsoft Teams, mostly dealing with work stuff. I worry this long period of isolation will hurt my social abilities, which to be fair were at negative levels when I had started this job last year, but were improving. The other is losing the separation between work and home. Since coming home and spending time in my room as an office and place to rest, my anxiety and feelings that I should be working started to come in. Some of this was alleviated by me setting some ground rules such as having a hard stop. But those feelings are still there and likely hampered efforts to try and relax.

Most of my work for the year was spent on three big projects that would set the course for the future of the company. Having this on the back of my shoulders added a bit of anxiety and drained me of a lot of energy. Every day, I found myself crashing in bed to take a quick nap so I could regain some energy.

That brings me to writing. 2020 I was hoping to get back to writing in a big way. Not only with automotive stuff, but doing some more with this blog and launching a new project. But with everything that has been going on this year, a lot of these ambitions had to be shelved. A lot of this stems from not having any energy or motivation to either start and/or finish various pieces. There would be moments where a burst of energy comes on and could I belt out a quick review or news story, but it was rare. At the end of this year, I have a bit of a backlog of new car reviews to get up. But at least I'm not pushing myself to the grindstone and getting them out. This only results in shoddy work and I feel quite bad.

For the personal blog, this is going to be the first and last piece for the year. It wasn't for the lack of trying. Several pieces currently sit on my laptop that are in varying states of completion, but again, I lacked the energy or motivation to go forward.

There are a couple of pieces I want to call out,

Afterthoughts: A Car In Troubled Times: This was written after my Grandfather passed away in June (not from COVID). With this and everything going on in the world, I wrote about how the car became a place where I could escape the world for a bit and work out various thoughts and feelings.

Quick Drive: 2020 Lexus RC F: My last new car review of the year and man what a car. I loved the throaty V8 engine and the grand touring nature of the suspension. I think the last line sums up my feelings about this car,

"It brought me the joy which sometimes is all you need a car to do."

Saving enough money to move forward on finding my first apartment

I know that's only two, but I really can't think of anything else from this landfill fire of a year.

Okay, that was obvious, so let go a bit deeper.

The mess of the 2020 elections are mercifully done. A lot of us knew this was going to be very different, but I don't think we knew how much it would be. Just look at the first debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Then election day rolls around and seeing the collective sadness rear its head as the first ballots are being counted, even though we knew that the mail-in ones were still waiting in the wings to be tallied. It took a few days, but the sense of jubilation when the results were leaning towards Biden was not all that surprising, considering the mess of the past four years. Whether or not this gets better remains to be seen.

How are you different today than you were 365 days ago?

I touched on this with the first question, but loneliness has been a big issue. Not being able to interact with people outside of my own family has brought back memories of some of the dark days of depression where I wouldn't talk with anyone. Thankfully, I'm not fully returning to these ways. But I can't help but worry that my socials skills will be back at a negative level. Twitter and Instagram have filled in some of the missing social aspects, but I can only use it so much before feelings of "Fear of Missing Out" and not being able to interact in person. Also, the deluge of various events such as the killing of George Floyd and the election meant I had to turn off social media at times to allow time to process and work out various feelings.

My mental health has also taken a bit of a stumble. Various aspects of my ADHD have started to come back in force with procrastination, distractions, fear of rejection, and warped perception of time to name a few. There has also been a large amount of stress and anxiety to work through because of the year. I think it's a bad sign when your anxieties have their anxieties to deal with.

To top it off, it has been hard to find something to keep my mind occupied for longer than five minutes. I look at the number of books and video games currently sitting on shelves or stacked in the closet waiting to be open, or the various movies and TV shows I have in queues for various streaming services and my own media server. Yet, they are left untouched. I drift towards scrolling through various social media outlets or watching the same YouTube videos. I've been trying to figure out why these are my go-to and not the items listed above that would give the same pleasure and stimulation, but also open some new windows and ideas. I haven't fully figured it out yet, but I do have some clues and ideas as to why.

On the flip side, I'm very lucky that I am still employed. That may seem like a put-down, but out of my close family, I'm the only one who has stayed employed throughout the year. My mom's last day of school was the day I started working from home, and she wouldn't return until the start of the new year. Both my dad and brother had furloughs at their respective jobs during the late Spring.

I have been slowly messing around with some projects that I've been wanting to do. These include expanding my media sever collection to include music, cataloging various media so I stop buying duplicates, and starting to explore various interests that I had when I younger.

Getting back to reviewing new cars has been quite enjoyable. Despite having a backlog that will not be finished till sometime in February or March, it has been fun again to figure out a vehicle's high and low points.

Is there anything you achieved that you forgot to celebrate?

Nope.

What have you changed your perspective on this year?

Two things come to mind. First is that I don't need a firehose of information. I was subscribed to several sites through RSS and had many people I was following on Twitter to see what was happening. But this massive flow of information was only making my anxiety and stress worse. For the past month, I have started to unsubscribe to a number of newsletters and RSS feeds, along with culling down my Twitter following list.

Second is that I need to slow down. What I mean by this is I need to take my time and not focus on trying to finish everything as fast as possible so I move on to the next thing. There is something about taking a moment to breathe or letting things play out to a point to where you can jump in and provide a different point of view.

Who are the people that came through for you this year?

My therapist came through this year, transitioning from in-person visits to doing chats either through Zoom or on the phone - depending on whether or not either of us run into technical issues. They have been really helpful just listening to whatever was on my mind that week, and point out possible thoughts and directions to chew on to get me into a better place.

There is also a large number of people I interacted with that made the lockdown and isolation a little bit more bearable. Too many to list here, but I would like to say thank you to all.

What were some pieces of media that defined your year?

Casiopea, Mint Jams: There is a person who I follow on Twitter that brings up Casiopea from time to time. This Japanese jazz fusion band has been around since 1976 and produced a number of albums. I had them in the back of my mind for a time to check, but wasn't until the fall when I started listening to Mint Jams - their seventh album (and I believe second live album). I immediately fell in love with the band after hearing the first track Take Me. Something about this brings absolute joy and pleasure. Since then, I have bought the CD and started to dive fully into the discography.

Yakuza Like A Dragon (Playstation 4): I don't know how to describe a game where one minute you're beating up criminals and the next minute you're trying to figure out who is urinating in a river. It seems ridiculous, but that's Yakuza Like a Dragon in a nutshell. There are moments of complete absurdity that is intertwined with tender and heartfelt moments as you interact with your compatriots. I'm currently on chapter five and finding new stuff to do such as a Mario Kart knockoff and running my own business, while trying to figure why I was betrayed by a father figure. It's chaotic and beautiful at the same time.

Zero 7, Simple Things: This album was the one I would play if I was feeling down or needed a reminder to slow down.

Growing Collection of Face Masks: If I am going to wear face masks to protect myself and others, I might as well have some interesting ones. Currently have around twenty masks that I wear and wash, all of them with some distinct pattern or fabric to have them stand out. I'm likely going to be buying a few more in the new year because I'm really like wearing them.

This one hurts but it is the "old normal". I remember listening to a podcast about a couple of months after starting working from home and one of the hosts brought up that the old normal isn't coming back. We need to take time and mourn the loss. I didn't know what to make of this at the time, but it really started to sink in as this mess slowly continued throughout the year.

Think about how much has changed in your day to day routine. For example, I don't leave the house unless I really need to get something from the grocery store, taking the dog for a walk, or going for a drive to clear my head. A lot of places I would have normally gone are either only allowing pickup or closed down. I haven't seen anyone outside my family since March and have seen only a couple of relatives since then.

No one knows what comes after the virus is at a state where all of us can resume some sort of 'normal'. Will our favorite places still be around? Is virtual learning going to be the next step for schools? Are we going to watching new movies over streaming services and not at a theater? Will online shopping take over as the main source of getting goods?

There's a lot of unknowns that will not have an answer for quite some time. But I have started to mourn that the old normal is gone. As much I hate it and don't know what's next, I know that I have to ready myself in some fashion.

What do you hope to accomplish in 2021?

Unfortunately, a lot of the stuff I want to work on in the coming year depends on what happens with the rollout of the vaccine and containing the virus. There are a few things I have marked as priorities.

Moving into my first place: So I never have talked about this publicly except to a few close people, but I'm really looking forward to moving out and into an apartment. Originally I was planning to do it this year, but then everything came to a screeching halt. This proved to be a blessing in disguise as I was able to save a bit more money so that I had two months of rent and the security deposit. I have a few places in mind and the goal is to move in before the end of March. That will give me enough time to figure out several items such as insurance.

Writing: I feel like this is something I mention every year. Some progress is made, but not as much as I would like. This past year, I was hoping to branch out by doing more with this blog and starting a couple of projects that had been sitting around for a while. But none of those things happened. Next year, I have some maintenance items to do for the personal blog. I don't know if I'll have anything worth writing about at the moment since my brain is currently recovering from a pile of mush. As for the projects, I'm hoping to launch one sometime in the next few months. The other is going to sit on the sidelines still as I still need to work out some items with that.

Keeping Records: I always think that I remember 'x' and I don't need to write anything down about it, and it turns out I do forget. Yeah, I'm wanting to change that for this coming year. Primarily, I'm doing this for any vehicle I review because it might be months before I start writing, and have forgotten key parts I wanted to mention. This is also something I want to do with books, video games, and music as a way to remember what I enjoyed throughout a given year.

It would be at this point I would end this postmortem with some pithy note about 2020 getting kicked out and 2021 hopefully being a massive improvement. Except that feels quite insincere. We have various vaccines rolling out, but it remains a massive question as to how fast and whether or not enough people take it. There's also the toll on mental health that is only going to get larger not only from those working in hospitals but in other fields. I could go on with other items, but you get a general idea.

Everything runs on solar power. The roads are made of dirt. Cellphones are mostly useless. Most everyone owns a mountain bike, and maintaining hiking trails is considered a routine leisure activity. (Corollary: Obesity doesn't appear to be a problem.) Friday nights generate vigorous debate – whether to eat at the place with good barbecue or the place with good pizza. There are no other choices. Fourth of July parade ideas this year included a proposed float that would poke fun at the community’s reliance on outhouses. Every year on the Summer Solstice, there’s a hike to a gorgeous summit where everyone holds hands and watches the sun set at 10:30 p.m. There’s a legendary 100-year-old general store, the Mercantile, but even it closes for six weeks during the winter. Everyone carries bear spray. Yes, everyone. Even when riding the mountain bikes. I even hiked with a post-middle-aged woman who last year broke her clavicle when the bear spray came loose from its carrier on her bike. It got caught in the spokes, upending her while at speed on the area’s main dirt road. She spoke about it as if it were a mere shrug of an incident in her day-to-day life. This was the community that was my vacation home for six days last month. Polebridge, Montana, just west of Glacier National Park. Population: 132. I really didn’t know what I was getting into. A Google search had yielded “North Fork Hostel & Square Peg Ranch” as a promising place to stay for a Montana adventure. Other than “bring a headlamp”, I didn’t do much research, in part because I wanted to keep the adventure open-ended, and in part because I was horribly sick for three weeks prior to the trip. (See a previous post for the sordid details of my illness. Not that I like to broadcast incessantly about my sicknesses, but I am trying to do my little part to help spread the word about the evils of opiods.) But before we get to stories from the middle of nowhere, let me tell you a sad story about the Glacier Park International Airport. It’s a not a big terminal – only one place to eat and lots of information about Montana. Because there was a long queue at the rental car counter, I had some lunch and read a few brochures to pass the time. Nearly every brochure touted the natural wonders of Montana, and how it important it was to preserve them. Save the bears! Save the glaciers! Recycle! Camp only where you’re supposed to! I then went to recycle my plastic bottle. There was not a recycle bin to be found. The person at the cafe to eat told me to throw it in the trash. The person at the rental car counter told me to throw it in the trash. I finally walked down a hall and found the airport’s administrative offices, and I told the airport manager of my dilemma. He said he was quite certain there were recycle bins in his airport. He walked back to the terminal, with me following him around. It was sadly comical. It was like following a little kid who swore he did his homework but couldn’t find it anywhere. I pressed him: “Tell me, when you personally have something to recycle – a can or something – what do you do with it?” I asked him twice; he didn’t answer either time, and instead kept looking for nonexistent recycle bins. Finally, he told he would take my bottle back to his office, that he was sure there was a bin there. I told him of my incredulity: “Every piece of paper I read in this airport tells me how important it is to preserve the environment, and you don’t even have a recycle bin.” I also asked him about future passengers: Are they supposed to hunt down the manager of the airport every time they have something to recycle? Anyway, he walked off with my cup toward his office. I had my doubts that it would end up anywhere but the trash. After my trip, I contacted the local newspaper and the major state newspaper and told them what happened, hoping it would be deemed worth a story. Alas, I’ve yet to receive a reply. OK, back to the middle of nowhere, or so it has been officially deemed by at least one publication. My directions took me down a dirt road some 15 miles long, running just west of a beautiful river with views of Glacier National Park on the other side. It had to be the dustiest dirt road of all time. Little did I know that I happened to be driving on it on the dustiest possible day. You see, the road gets so dusty that it’s treated every few months with magnesium chloride, and the next treatment was scheduled for the very next day after my arrival. I’d never heard of such a thing before, but the treatments generate a ton of conversation in Polebridge, where All Things Roads seems to be a constant topic of debate. “Mag chloride” - using the local lingo - is supposedly nontoxic for humans, but it’s as bad as salt for the undercarriage of your car. I suppose there’s a tradeoff for everything. At some point, as you drive down this dusty road, you start to wonder if you’re going to get where you’re going. Eventually, there was a landmark: The Home Ranch Bottoms restaurant and shop, deemed the “7th Best Restaurant in the middle of nowhere in all 50 states by The Daily Meal”, according to the sign. It’s a friendly place with lots of huckleberry options: huckleberry pie, huckleberry ice cream, huckleberry candles, and even huckleberry barbecue sauces. (I have a bit of a hard time comprehending that last item.) I later learned that this was the place with the good barbecue. As an Eastern North Carolina native who is particular about his barbecue, I came back on another day and tried a sandwich. It was Texas style (sort of), and there was a pickle on it. Okey-doke. Actually, it was fine, but I had no desire to try it again. Two more notes about “the Bottoms”: This was also the only public place within many, many miles that had public Wi-Fi. One would think, therefore, that there would be a steady supply of people – like at a Starbucks – hanging around and milking a drink as an excuse to use the Internet. Nope. They just don’t do that around Polebridge. I was guilty of the crime only once over six days, when I took a root beer onto the porch to check my emails and let my roommate back home know that I hadn’t been eaten by bears. Also, I was informed at the Bottoms that Polebridge proper was 5 miles away. Good. I was indeed on the correct road. The center of Polebridge is the Mercantile, an iconic and much-photographed building. There’s been a general store on the site for more than a century, and the population was significantly higher in the old days than now. They have a bakery that sells the most awesome huckleberry sweets. They also sell headlamps and bear spray, both of which I needed. (Yep. I somehow forgot to pack a headlamp, the one item I was informed specifically to bring for the hostel.) Next door to the mercantile is the Northern Lights Saloon and Cafe, the place that serves the awesome pizza on Fridays and other interesting concoctions the rest of the week. Seating is outdoors on picnic tables with a great view of the mountains. Great place to read a book. Or listen to music - they had a performer playing a banjo and singing one of the nights I was there. The hostel was a few hundred yards away. A wonderful spot, near the river. You can stay in a teepee, or a separate “cabin”, or in one of the bunk beds inside the main building. I chose the bunk beds; they’re cheaper, and they also achieve my main purpose for staying at a hostel – to meet other cool people who are traveling the world. The hostel caretaker is a German named Oliver, which was also the name of his cat. Unfortunately, late June is still early season tourist-wise in the Glacier area, so the hostel wasn’t flush with people. I did eventually hang out with some passers-through, sitting on the screen porch and telling stories. Everything ran on solar power, and we were told there would be Internet for perhaps one hour a day in the evening, but I never witnessed it. I highly recommend the place. It was the Summer Solstice, and I learned of a Solstice hike nearby. Thirteen of us (12 locals and myself) hiked to the top of a mountain and watched a glorious sunset, then held hands and gave thanks for the sun. The owner of the Merc and his young daughter were there, and one of the couples invited me to their house for a Sunday brunch that would followed by some community trail maintenance near the Canada border. Yes, please! From there, the trip had its ups and downs. I was still somewhat sick, so I slept more than usual and didn’t hike as much as planned. I spent a day driving the rental car exploring other parts of Montana, including the breathtaking plains to the east of Glacier. I thought the drive would be relaxing, but fatigue set in and I seriously was wondering aloud why I was even in Montana in the first place. (Why was I? Short answer: I’ve always had a fondness for Montana and used to name imaginary baseball teams after cities in the state; my interest was piqued last year when my then-roommate kept listing it as one of the three places she’d like to visit.) But the highlights were true highlights. I hiked Mount Brown, the second-steepest hike in Glacier, with a group of 20-somethings from Iowa. (The trend continues: No matter where I go, I always end up hanging out with the 20-somethings.) It was a relentless and difficult hike, and I was heartened with the others asked me to take the lead because I was the best at setting a pace. We hiked on a glacier-covered meadow near the summit and had a friendly encounter with a mountain goat. The views were stunning. The Sunday brunch at the local couple’s house was interesting, because I got to see a private dwelling in the area. The couples lives waaaaay off the beaten path some 15 miles from the hostel, but they are well-to-do and have constructed a McMansion version of a log cabin with all the modern amenities. I was too tired to do much trail maintenance, but I enjoyed hanging out with some of the kids and then left early for a nap. The next evening, I joined the locals again for Game Night at the Community Center, which is also the place where they hold their New Year’s Eve parties and such. In Glacier Park itself, I took the advice of locals and rented a bike to ride on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, but only to realize that much of the road is closed to bicycles during certain hours. When I pointed this out to upper management at the bike-rental place, I was comped a free kayak rental on Lake McDonald. Not a bad outcome at all. Other noteworthies from the trip: _ The locals love Amazon Prime. That’s how they get stuff. _ While I felt the community was special, it’s not quite the off-the-grid community for me. Because there is no school, the average age of full-time Polebridgians ranks right up there with your median age for “Wheel of Fortune” TV viewing. The locals voted not to have a public school built a few years back because they want to the keep the community small, but the leads to a lack of youthful vibrancy. These people have energy, but I have a different type of energy. I have primitive skills gatherings energy. I have “let’s-go-on-an-adventure-on-the-spur-of-the-moment” energy. These people, while wonderful to hang out with, are more sedate than I could ever be. _ I was also told by the locals to enjoy myself, but to tell everyone else how miserable the place is. They really, really don’t want a whole bunch of people moving there. _ About 1,000 people were expected for the Fourth of July parade. I wondered why they would all come from. _ What if David Lynch directed an airline safety video? I had that every discussion with the person sitting next to me on the flight to Denver. _ My rental car was a stinker. It was a Kia, and you can’t see out the back window worth a dang. Is that a thing now? Are they making rear windows smaller and smaller? Seems like an unsafety feature to me. _ Because I was still recovering from the opiod saga, I was still having weird dreams. In one dream, I was working with Walter Cronkite two days before his retirement. Apparently, I was going to be the one taking his place. Anyway, after his next-to-last broadcast, I went up to him jokingly and said “Good job, Mr. Cronkite. Done this before?” I then drummed on the anchor desk to emphasize I was just exhibiting light humor. He didn’t laugh. _ I also had a very colorful dream involving my brother H.B., and my friend Darcey’s landlord Deward. It seems Deward and I were at Darcey’s house, the Gold Gem, except that Darcey wasn’t there, and the Gold Gem was in North Carolina instead of Colorado. It was also decorated with hundreds of colorful stuffed animals. Many people were wandering through the house, looking at the animals, as if they were part of some sort of fair exhibit. I peaked my head through one door, and saw that the stairs leading to Darcey’s other rooms had been blocked off. I remember this being a very happy dream for me because there were a lot of children around, and they were all eager to learn – and I was excited to teach them something. At some point, I had to leave to bicycle to H.B.’s house so that we could go to Greenville for what I believed was a Little League baseball game. I remember thinking that the me of three years ago would have loved going to the game, but the current version of me would rather be going camping. _ I also had several dreams about my Dad. Nothing particular, other than he was just there. I also remember a dream about spinning turntables, which means it was probably another of those radio dreams in which I can’t stop the dead air, but I retained none of the details. _ I'm again struck by how quickly we can cover vast distances, and how that has homogenized our cultures. Here I was in an isolated area - and, yes, it did have its own special quirks - but overall the conversations and mannerisms wouldn't have been out of place virtually anywhere else in the United States.

There are also two different ways to go through matches. Using OkCupid’s DoubleTake format, you can swipe left or right like Tinder or Bumble for a breezy, low-investment level matching experience.

Alternatively, you can browse matches by scrolling through multiple profiles. In this option, you can open profiles and like and comment on specific prompts to reach out directly with a message. Even though the other person will only see your message if they like you first, this may be a better way to get noticed and can make you stand out from other daters who just like every person in their queue.

TestFlight Tutorial: iOS Beta Testing

Update note: Rony Rozen updated this tutorial. Dani Arnaout wrote the original post and Tom Elliott did the most recent update.

Learn how to beta test your iOS apps!

TestFlight Beta Testing is an Apple product that makes it easy to invite users to test your iOS, watchOS and tvOS apps before you release them to the App Store. This TestFlight tutorial will walk you through using TestFlight as part of your app’s release process.

This is one of those rare tutorials where you don’t code — just follow the steps and you’ll be up and running with TestFlight in no time! :]

Getting Started

This tutorial uses Drop Charge, from 2D iOS & tvOS Games by Tutorials, as the example in this tutorial. Because you’ll be submitting test builds to Apple for Beta App Review, you should follow along with a project of your own.

This tutorial assumes that your app is set up for provisioning, and has an app ID created in both the Developer Portal and on iTunes Connect.

This setup is outside the scope of this tutorial, but you can get all of the information you need on submitting an app and getting it published on the App Store in our two part tutorial How to Submit An App to Apple: From No Account to App Store.

Submitting your Build to iTunes Connect

Open your project in Xcode, make sure you have a correct Bundle Identifier, and that your Team ID and Release Code Signing Identity are properly set. Choose Generic iOS Device in the scheme chooser:

Then choose Product > Archive:

If everything is okay with the build, Xcode will open the Organizer window with your app in the Archives tab. Click Upload to App Store….

Xcode then prompts you with App Store distribution options. Xcode selects all the check boxes by default. Leave them like this and click Next:

The next screen asks you for distribution signing options. You can select automatic signing, or manually select your distribution certificate and provisioning profile. Select the relevant ones, and click Next.

Once Xcode finishes doing some of its magic, it presents a summary page for the app you’re about to submit. Click Upload.

Your app will start uploading to iTunes Connect. Xcode displays various messages as it compiles, verifies and signs your app. When the upload finishes, you should see the following message:

Just smile and click Done :]

That’s all the work required for Xcode. Your beta build is now available on iTunes Connect, and that’s where you’ll be doing the rest of the work to set up TestFlight.

Adding Internal Testers

Your build is ready for testing, but who’s going to test it?

Apple defines two types of testers for TestFlight:

Internal Tester: This is an iTunes Connect user that has an Admin, App Manager, Legal, Developer, or Marketer role with access to your app. This is usually a team member or a client for whom you’re developing an app. You can add up to 25 internal testers.

External Tester: This is any user outside of your team that wants to test your app. An external tester has no access to your iTunes Connect account in any way, and can only download and install the app. You can add up to 10,000 external testers.

Before your external testers can test your app, you must submit your app to Apple for review, exactly as you would with a normal App Store submission. These reviews tend to go faster than normal app reviews, although you shouldn’t count on it, and once it’s approved, you can let external testers test your app.

Internal testers, on the other hand, are instantaneously notified about new builds as soon as they are uploaded and processed within iTunes Connect. If you want more control over the builds that are uploaded then you might want to consider multiple external test groups instead. You’ll learn more about external testers later, but for now, you’ll focus on internal testers.

To add an internal tester, head to the Users and Roles section in iTunes Connect:

Click the + button to add a new user:

Fill in your new user info, using an email address you have access to, and click Next:

Note: If the email address entered is not associated with an Apple ID, your tester will have to create an Apple ID to accept the invitation. This only applies to Internal Testers as they need to access iTunes Connect.

Now you need to assign a role for the new user. View the privileges for each role by clicking the ? button, and choose the appropriate one. You can also choose to limit access to a single app via the Apps dropdown, or leave the default All Apps access.

If you’re unsure which role to chose, use App Manager which allows beta testing management and the ability to download apps. Once you’re done setting up your new user, click Next.

Choose the type of notifications you want your new testers to receive, then click Save:

iTunes Connect now sends an invitation to the new user and, as the message indicates, that user first needs to verify his or her email address before the account will show in iTunes Connect. Go the inbox for the new user’s email address, find the email entitled Welcome New iTunes Connect User and click activate your account. Once you’re done with this process, the new user you added should be enabled on iTunes Connect and can be used as an internal tester.

Creating a new internal beta tester is only the first part of the process. The remaining step is to invite this particular tester to test your latest build.

It’s time to enable testing on your app — so the tester actually has something to test! :]

Starting Beta Testing

To start beta testing of your app, go to the My Apps section on the iTunes Connect home page and click on your app:

Select the Activity tab. This is where you’ll find the build you uploaded earlier. If it’s still marked “Processing”, go make yourself a cup of coffee and come back later. :]

Next, click the TestFlight tab. You may notice a yellow warning sign next to the build you’d like to send internal testers. If this is the case, click the warning sign and complete the required steps.

Once you’re done, the build status will change to Ready to Test:

Next, click Add iTunes Connect Users in the left side menu. You’ll then see a list of your internal testers. Select the ones you’d like to add as internal testers for this build and click Add.

All selected testers now receive an email with a link to download and install this build via the TestFlight app. You can find detailed instructions on the testers’ point of view in the last section of this tutorial.

Before you get into the user flow, you should learn how to add external testers.

External Testers

First, click Test Information in the left side menu, and fill in all of the necessary information. At a minimum, this includes:

As the message indicates, you must provide this information in order to submit a build for external testing. Once completed, click Save.

Now, click Add External Testers in the left side menu. iTunes Connect asks you to create a new testing group. It’s up to you how you choose to manage your groups. You can either have one group for all of your testers, different groups for different types of testers, or different groups for different apps. For this tutorial, you’ll create one group called Top-Testers.

Once you’ve created the group, you can start adding external testers to it. Click Add Testers in the pop-up:

At this point, you can choose between adding new testers manually, adding existing testers (people already testing another app or build), or importing testers from a CSV file. For this tutorial, you’ll add new testers manually. Choose Add New Testers and click Next.

Add the email addresses, first and last names of any external testers you want to add. Once you’re finished, click Add. You can always add more external testers by clicking the + button on the testing group page. All external testers count toward your 10,000 external testers limit:

You now need to select a build for your external testers. On the Builds tab, click the + button:

Then, select your build and click Next:

Note: Why do you select the build separately for your internal and external testers? Well you may want your internal and external testers to be testing different builds. For example, your external testers may be testing your next release candidate, but your internal testers are testing your master build. By making you select a build for internal and external testers separately, iTunes Connect allows this kind of separation. Similarly, you can select different builds for different testing groups.

iTunes Connect may ask additional questions, such as whether the app requires sign-in or not. Complete the remaining steps, including providing testing information to display to your external testers.

iTunes Connect checks the Automatically notify testers check box by default. If you don’t want it to notify your testers as soon as the build is ready for them to review, uncheck this box (you have to notify them for the build to become available). Once complete, click Submit for Review.

iTunes Connect adds your app to the review queue and changes its status to Waiting for Review. To obtain approval, your build must fully comply with the full App Store Review Guidelines. Approval usually takes no more than 48 hours. Once Apple approves your version of the app, subsequent builds won’t require a review until you change the version number.

Once the app has passed Beta App Review, you’ll receive an email with confirmation that your app can now begin external testing. If you checked the Automatically notify testers check box, your external testers will receive notification emails at this point. Otherwise, you’ll have to go back to iTunes Connect to start testing. Your external testers will then receive an invitation email similar to the one received by your internal testers as described above.

Note: A build is only valid for 90 days. If you want your testers to use the app beyond that, you’ll have to upload a new build before the expiration date.

That concludes the developer’s perspective of app testing, but what does it look like from the tester’s perspective?

Testers’ Point of View

This section will walk you through the steps required from your tester in order to access the build you have just made available. It’s wise to be familiar with this side of the process because questions will come up!

Installing TestFlight

The TestFlight app is available on the AppStore. If you haven’t already, open the AppStore and search for TestFlight:

Download the TestFlight app and launch it. When asked to login, sign in with any Apple ID that you wish to use. This could be the personal Apple ID on your test device and doesn’t have to match the email address you added into iTunes Connect.

Redeeming Your App

When a build becomes available, or when you add a new tester, the tester receives an invitation to test the build via TestFlight.

Note: If you’re following along in real-time, it’s unlikely your build is approved, and will only be available to internal testers at this point.

Open this email on your testing device, then click View in TestFlight. This will launch TestFlight and redeem the invitation using the Apple ID currently in use in the TestFlight app. You’ll then see the following app preview page for your app:

Note: The View in TestFlight link in the email works via Universal Links, so if for whatever reason it doesn’t open TestFlight, just copy the link and open it in Safari. You’ll see a redemption code you can manually copy and paste directly into the TestFlight app.

Tap install and the app will download and appear on your home screen! Now you can treat it just like any other app. It’ll have an orange dot near the name in Springboard to indicate it’s a TestFlight install.

From now on, whenever a new version of this app is available, you’ll see a notification from TestFlight. All you need to do is update your app and run the latest version.
