i wanted some inspiration for my toxic exes love triangle, but @beachesgetpeaches said let there be domestic fluff and baby clothes instead, so behold, some maxiel.
Max is sorting through the packages that Daniel’s brought back earlier, piled high on the kitchen island. There shouldn’t be too much sponsored stuff – this is not their business address, it’s out of the way and is officially registered under the Hermanns – but he can spot a few brightly coloured, branded boxes that he supposes are work related still. Perhaps someone at Red Bull forwarded them here, stupid but not impossible. He tosses those to one side, moves the generic brown cardboard boxes stuck shut with Amazon tape to another corner, those will probably be restocks of some basic supplies that they buy in bulk; nappies, diaper cream, cat litter, poop bags.
Olivia is just starting to get fussy, Max can hear her take some heavy breaths that are usually a sign that she’s minutes away from complaining at full volume. He’d really like to finish this one thing uninterrupted, but after contemplating his options briefly, he opts to go over and pick her up from her play mat. Sorting the mail one handed is still a hell of a lot better than dealing with a hysterical baby.
“Look at all this stuff your daddy’s ordered again. He does love a treat, doesn’t he, little one?” Max chats at his daughter with an amused smile while she, now satisfied with the attention, blabbers nonsensically before stuffing the head of the rubber hippo she’s holding into her mouth. Max continues with the task at hand, an understated, pastel coloured box catching his eye. It’s not crass enough packaging to be from any sports brand, but it’s also way more tasteful than those generic boxes sex shops usually use that try so hard to be inconspicuous that they end up looking uncanny. He doesn’t recognize the brand, but that doesn’t mean anything. He considers whether he should open it or wait for Daniel, but for some reason, the parcel has him intrigued, and he’s fairly sure it’s not a sex toy. Plus it’s not like Olivia would be scarred, even if it ended up being something NSFW, whatever is inside, she’d probably only want to clutch it in her little fist, shake it, throw it, or slobber over it, potentially all of the above. Just as he’s trying to get around the logistics of opening the box one handed, Daniel walks in, sweaty and a little out of breath, and drops his earbuds on the counter next to the boxes.
“Hey, you’re back. How was your run?”
“Eh, it was okay,” Daniel comes up behind them, hugging Max’s waist and pressing a quick kiss to his lips before turning his attention to Olivia, “but I missed this little munchkin!”
“Daniel, don’t be ridiculous. You were gone for 40 minutes,” Max scolds, but he can’t keep the fondness out of his voice.
“Yeah and it’s completely unreasonable to miss her after less than an hour. Unlike when you FaceTimed us while getting your hair cut to check in on us.”
“Ah, but that’s different. You know I hate getting my hair cut.”
“And you needed her for emotional support?”
“So they only want to talk about her, and I don’t need to make small talk,” Max explains, rolling his eyes like this is self-evident. He hands Olivia over to Daniel, who is delighted by having both of them back in one place and doesn’t even squirm when Daniel presses a sweaty kiss onto her belly. She just reaches out and tries to tug his damp curls.
“Can you entertain her for a bit, just until I finish this, please? Then you can go take a shower,” Max asks, and Daniel nods. He walks over to the living room, bouncing his daughter in the air and cooing at her, while Max returns his attention to the box in front of him.
“Hey, can I open this?” he shouts, pointing at the pastel coloured box from earlier as if Daniel’s able to see what he’s referring to.
“Sure, go ahead,” comes the answer from the other room. So Max gets to work, carefully slicing the tape open with a knife and pulling off the lid once it’s unstuck. He was right, it isn’t anything R-rated, in fact it’s quite the opposite: it’s children’s clothing. When he holds the garments up, it’s revealed to be a little summery linen set of shorts and a shirt, apparently Italian themed with some pastel coloured flowers, fruit, bowls of ice cream, waves and little smiling suns. It looks exactly like the sort of thing Daniel would wear himself, Max is pretty sure he was disappointed that it doesn’t come in his size. It’s really cute, but with the clothes removed, Max now spots the invoice sitting at the bottom of the box and has to do a double take.
“Daniel, why are we paying 142€ for this?” Max barges into the living room, holding up the incriminating pieces of tiny clothing.
“Come on, Max, they are so cute! She’ll be adorable in them. And it’s getting really warm now, she needs summer clothes.”
“She’s got plenty of clothes,” Max states.
“Yes, because you got 20-packs of everything in like, three basic colours. I refuse to raise a monochrome child, Max! She needs whimsy in her life.”
“Her clothes are the same colours because that’s easier for the laundry. Besides, she’s growing so fast, she will wear this maybe twice! This is stupid money to pay, Daniel. What will we do with it in a month when she’s grown out of it?”
“We’ll keep it, duh. For her baby brother. Or sister,” Daniel flashes a megawatt smile at Max, blinking up at him from the couch, and Max is momentarily dumbfounded.
“Her baby… Daniel, you want to— you want another kid?”
“Of course I do, baby. Olivia’s been the second best decision of my life, after marrying you,” Daniel replies, standing up and pulling Max into a kiss. And Max knows this isn’t how people usually go about discussing these things, really, but when have they ever done things the usual way? They seem to be on the same page, and that’s all that matters.
#words*mine#maxiel#max/daniel#f1 rpf#it seems I can’t go a week without writing anymore and that’s a great thing but#I also need someone to enable me with constant prompts 😅

Fox. Stockings. I won't ever be the same.
Out of curiosity, would he want his partner to put them on while he watches? Or would he want to be surprised?

You’d been reviewing the finer details of a proposed Senate bill for more hours than you could remember. The words seemed to shift and pulse before your gritty eyes, but you were in too deep to notice that you’d reread the same paragraph three times and still didn’t grasp its underlying meaning. A brief knock startled you out of your hyperfocus, and you glanced up from your datapad just as your aide leaned into the room.
“Sorry to bother you, Senator, but a priority delivery just arrived from the Coruscant Guard headquarters. It has a diplomatic seal. I thought you'd want to know right away.”
The kriff?
“You are absolutely correct. Thank you.”
The aide set the parcel on your desk and withdrew, discreetly closing the door on the way out of your office. You took a moment to stretch and yawn before you picked up the pouch and inspected it curiously. It wasn’t the seal that was unusual; the embassy received dozens of such secure deliveries every day. Nor was it unusual for you to receive missives from the Corries: security alerts; logistical updates; requests for information which you routinely ignored, to the chagrin of the Marshal Commander. But a diplomatically sealed delivery from the Coruscant Guard itself? That was unusual.
You broke the seal and dumped out the contents: an official memorandum printed on actual paper, and a small, plain envelope. Damn. If it’s sensitive enough to need to be printed instead of sent as a holo, my day is about to get complicated. You picked up the memo, clenching your jaw as you read the heading.
TO: Senior Representative, Planet Haneli FROM: Marshal Commander Fox, Coruscant Guard SUBJECT: Notice of Compulsory Testimony Under the Enhanced Security and Enforcement Act #192358691 Senator, Due to the Haneli embassy’s persistent lack of cooperation in regards to my repeated official requests for information in the matter of CSF-32610/CG-854201, I have no recourse but to invoke ESEA. Please report to my office tonight at 2100 hours for debriefing. Failure to comply will result in your immediate arrest and detention, and an official investigation will be opened into the matter of your obstructive actions. I trust those steps will be unnecessary. Regards, Marshal Commander Fox
I’m going to murder him. I’m going to make him eat this goddamned sheet of flimsi. I’m going to—wait, what’s in the envelope?
Your hands shook with rage as you tore it open. Inside, you found a brief handwritten note and—you froze, mouth dropping open with shock as you stared wide-eyed at the item inside. Holy Force. You glanced at the clock. Kark, kark, kark. Eight o’clock already. I need to leave now.
You sent a terse comm to your aide to notify your driver that you would require transport immediately, then grabbed the memo and the rest of the delivery, made a quick stop at the refresher, and hurried out of your office. Traffic was kriffed, and you barely made it to the Corrie Guard HQ in time. Luckily, the Commander appeared to have notified his men that you were expected, because nobody stopped you as you strode through the corridors to his office, propelled by adrenaline.
You smacked the control panel to open his door, marched to his desk, and slapped the memo down in front of him.
“What the hell is this supposed to mean?” you demanded.
“Senator, he replied mildly. “So good of you to join me.”
“You didn’t give me much choice,” you snapped. “Threatening to arrest me? Really, Commander?”
He tapped a button on his vambrace, and the door slid shut behind you, beeping softly as it locked. “That was only half of my message. Did you read the rest?”
“Oh, I read it,” you replied in a dangerous tone. “Every single word.”
“Good. I’d hate to have to repeat myself.”
He stood and moved out from behind his desk. He walked deliberately, purposely invading your space, but you refused to back down. Once he was close enough that his chestplate nearly brushed against you, he stopped and removed his helmet and gloves, meeting your eyes with a hint of a smile.
“You look absolutely stunning tonight,” he murmured, stroking his knuckles lightly across your cheek.
“Thanks, it’s the looming incarceration. Really brings out my eyes.”
He laughed quietly and threaded his fingers through the hair at the base of your skull. He rested his forehead against yours, closing his eyes for a moment before his lips met yours softly. “You didn’t really think I’d arrest you, did you?”
“It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve had me in binders.”
“Nor the last. But I have something else in mind tonight.”
“So I gathered,” you murmured, kissing him again and again as you began to unbuckle his armor. “Any particular reason we had to do this in your office instead of at the embassy in my lovely and very clean bed?”
“My office is clean.”
Your gaze dropped pointedly to a suspicious stain on the carpet.
“Mostly,” he added.
“If it’s an office hookup you’re after, we could have used mine. It has a sofa, you know. Very roomy. Very soft.”
“No good,” he replied as his lips traveled down your throat. “Has to be here. That way every time I look at my desk, I can remember what you look like spread out on it.”
“Fair enough.” You eased open the seal of his undersuit and pushed it off his shoulders, pausing for a moment to admire the view. “You’re so fucking gorgeous. I’ll never get over you.”
He rumbled in approval as you trailed your hands over his exposed skin, tracing the scars—both familiar and new—and lines of ink.
“What happened here?” you asked, flicking your tongue over a recently healed scar on his shoulder.
“Trando bounty hunter. It’s a boring story.”
“I doubt that,” you replied dryly.
“It was only a scratch, my love,” he murmured. “A bit of plastcrete shrapnel. No need to give me that look.”
“No doubt they gave you another medal for your display case.”
“Not this time,” he chuckled. “But it’s a good story to tell the shinies.”
“You take too many risks.”
“And you’re stalling,” he said in a low voice. “Take it off.”
“Take what off?” you asked, the very picture of innocence.
“Take it off,” he repeated, trailing his fingertips along your neckline. “I want to see you.”
“Say please.”
His fingertips reached the bottom of your neckline and slid beneath the fabric to caress between your breasts. He lowered his face to your shoulder, then grazed his nose along your neck, breathing in your scent before he whispered, “Take off the goddamned dress before I cut it off you.”
You inhaled sharply as your heart began to pound. That was tempting. Very tempting. But the thought of leaving Corrie HQ in nothing but the tattered remains of your senatorial robe was enough to persuade you to choose the wiser option. You began to unbutton the garment slowly.
Fox drew back to lean against his desk, intently watching the progress of your hands as they descended, revealing a hint more skin with each button that opened. At last, you reached the final button and allowed the gown to fall to the floor, fully exposed to his gaze and wearing nothing but the shimmersilk stockings he’d sent in the diplomatic pouch.
His eyes traveled lazily down your body, taking in the sight of you. All the oxygen seemed to disappear from the room. Your skin prickled with awareness, and for an instant, you felt like a prey animal caught in the grip of a dangerous predator. You swallowed as your pulse began to race, but you forced yourself not to cover your vulnerability in the face of his intense scrutiny.
“Turn around,” he ordered quietly.
You complied, resisting the temptation to look back over your shoulder at his reaction. He moved without a sound, and you nearly flinched when his hand slid around your hip and down your thigh, feeling the sheer, satiny fabric that stretched over your flesh. His breath ghosted over your shoulder, soft and warm, triggering a shudder of desire that raced down your spine.
“You did just as I asked,” he murmured, gliding his other hand up your abdomen to cup your breast, squeezing your nipple softly between two fingers.
“Your note was extremely clear,” you replied.
I don’t want to see anything but these when I get you out of that dress tonight. —F.
“And for once, you followed my orders,” he said. His lips grazed along your jaw. “I think that deserves a reward.”
He pulled you back against his body so you could feel his erection grinding against your ass through the stockings. He stroked back up your thigh and between your legs, and when he reached your pussy, he let out a low groan. “Fuck, love, you’ve soaked through them.”
“In my defense,” you said breathlessly, “I had plenty of time to speculate about what you were planning on my drive over.”
The soft puff of his laugh was warm against your skin, and he began to kiss a slow trail down your spine as he knelt behind you. When he reached your ass, he nuzzled against it, rubbing his face over the shimmersilk, kissing and nibbling, taking the fabric between his teeth and letting it snap back against your skin.
“So good for me,” he whispered. “Such a sweet little thing.”
He turned you around, guiding you with his hands on your hips until you stood facing him. Your mouth went dry at the sight of him on his knees for you, gazing up at you with naked desire in his eyes.
“Spread your legs for me, darling. I want to taste you.”
“Who am I to disobey the Marshal Commander?” you asked, your cheeky tone slightly less than convincing thanks to the noticeable rasp in your voice.
He shot you a lopsided grin, and then his hands slid up the backs of your thighs to grip your ass and pull you against his face.
“Fuck!” you gasped as his tongue slid over the gossamer fabric that covered your pussy.
He let out a soft, choked moan as he finally tasted you. The sensation was strange. It felt almost like a tease: you could feel every movement of his lips and tongue over your skin, but it was muted, subdued by the delicate layer between the two of you. His hands roamed greedily over your legs, massaging your flesh, tugging at the stockings, feeling the smooth, satiny fabric.
Abruptly, he pulled away and stood, gripping you by the waist and spinning you around to sit on his desk. He kissed you hard and deeply, then pressed your shoulders back until you were lying down with your legs dangling over the edge. He knelt once again and kissed a path up the inside of your leg until he reached the top of your thigh, then his hands slid up and tugged down the waistband just far enough for his tongue to plunge into you.
Tightening your legs around his head, you let out a hoarse whimper. A deep, satisfied rumble vibrated from his mouth into you as you writhed beneath him. Your fingers found their way into his hair, twining and tugging. All the while, his hands never ceased to explore and tease and play with you, gliding over your thighs as he reveled in the feeling of you wrapped around him.
He sucked and kissed and licked and teased, working you inexorably toward your orgasm, until at last your thighs locked and you clamped your hand over your mouth to muffle your scream of pleasure. With a grunt of displeasure, he reached up and tugged your hand away so he could hear you. He worked you through your climax as your body thrashed, and when you finally collapsed against the desk in exhaustion, he stood to lean over you, kissing you deeply, the taste of you still on his tongue.
“Let me come on your ass,” he whispered.
You nodded shakily, too spent to speak. He helped you to stand, then bent you forward over the desk and pulled the waistband of your stockings back up. His cock prodded against your thigh, and he took a moment to press and rub it against your ass through the shimmersilk before he began to stroke himself in a firm, steady rhythm. His cock and hand nudged against you with every movement, and his other hand squeezed and slapped your ass roughly. A deep groan tore from him, and his breath grew loud and ragged as his speed increased.
You heard a sharp gasp, and then the hot spurt of his cum splattered across your ass and back. A shudder wracked your body, and you desperately wished you could see his face as he pumped his cock until he had nothing left to give. With a soft grunt, he fell forward, catching himself on the desk with one hand just before he would have landed on you.
“So fuckin’ beautiful,” he panted. “So fuckin’ gorgeous, covered in my cum.”
He trailed his fingertips through the mess on your back, and then flattened his palm and smeared it across your skin, drawing an appreciative hum from you. Rolling over onto your side, you wrapped your arms around him and pulled him close. He melted against you, tucking his face into your shoulder.
“This desk is hard as kriff,” he mumbled. “I’m beginning to see a flaw in my plan.”
You laughed quietly. “Sofa is sounding pretty appealing right now, is it?”
“Mm. Next time.”
“I can’t wait to see what excuse you fabricate to throw my staff off the scent when that happens.”
“If your staff are anything like mine, they’ve already figured it out.” He kissed your shoulder and moved down your chest to suck gently at your nipple.
You brushed your hand up his back and neck to cradle his head against you. “I wonder what they’d say if they knew you were abusing the diplomatic seal to send me lingerie and overbearing demands for a hookup.”
“They’d either applaud my ingenuity or have me stripped of rank,” he chuckled. “I should get you cleaned up. As soon as my legs start working again.”
Later, after he helped you back into your gown, he wrapped his arms around you and pressed a kiss onto the top of your head. You leaned into his embrace, relaxing against his body with a tired yawn.
“That was a thorough debriefing, Commander,” you murmured. “I hope I was able to satisfy your curiosity.”
“For the moment,” he replied. “But the case is still open. I might need you again soon. Very soon.”
“Mm,” you smiled. “I’m sure the Haneli embassy will be happy to cooperate in any way you deem necessary.”
“Trying to avoid arrest, my love?”
“I’m afraid that’s confidential diplomatic information.”

Well, it’s good we’re suddenly paying attention to postal logistics. Retailers, traders, and consumers are trying to figure out what U.S. President Donald Trump’s suspension—and then reimposition—of the postal service’s de minimis rule means. The end of customs-free imports for Chinese goods worth less than $800 was perhaps inevitable, and drugs and artificially cheap clothes should definitely have a harder time entering the United States. So far, though, the executive order has mostly led to chaos that has forced Trump to suspend the measure.
Allow me to nag: Knowing some Latin is exceedingly useful. Those who have had the privilege of learning this versatile language will know that de minimis means “about the smallest [things].” For the past nine years, the United States has been rather generous in its definition of the smallest things. The de minimis rule for goods coming into the country per post has been $800 since 2016, which means that only goods worth more than $800 are subject to customs fees. That can buy quite a lot, especially online.
China has been the big winner of this loophole, especially budget fashion manufacturers like Shein and Temu, which don’t have stores in the United States but ship almost everything directly to their U.S. consumers. (Shein has a warehouse in Indiana, from which it ships some items and also handles returns, and Temu announced last year that it was going to launch U.S. warehouses.)
For $800, one also gets quite a bit of fentanyl. The synthetic opioid that has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans, including nearly 75,000 in 2023, mostly arrives in small parcels from Mexico and China. Six years ago, Beijing imposed heavy restrictions on fentanyl, but crafty entrepreneurs instead began exporting the lethal drug’s essential components. Today, China is the world’s leading exporter of such precursor chemicals, according to an October 2024 report.
That makes the de minimis parcels arriving in the United States every day a mixed bag, and they’re growing at a dizzying rate. By last October, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) was processing some 4 million de minimis shipments per day, up from 2.8 million per day in 2023. “Bad actors are exploiting this explosion in volume to traffic counterfeits, dangerous narcotics, and other illicit goods including precursor chemicals and materials such as pill presses and die molds used to manufacture fentanyl and other synthetic drugs that are killing Americans,” CBP noted.
It’s these drug packages that Trump tried to reduce with a Feb. 1 executive order ending the $800 de minimis rule for goods made in China. “I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, find that the sustained influx of synthetic opioids has profound consequences on our Nation, including by killing approximately two hundred Americans per day, putting a severe strain on our healthcare system, ravaging our communities, and destroying our families,” he explained in the executive order.
De minimis shipments are a mixed bag—and an enormous one at that. Under a normal government, any change to de minimis rules would need to be carefully planned with CBP, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), FedEx, DHL, and other logistics companies. That didn’t happen. And now that the executive order has been signed, it has to be implemented, since lex dilationes abhorret—the law abhors delay.
As a result, the executive order has caused logistical turmoil. To begin with, there are the parcels that were midair when Trump signed the order. Then there are the ones that had just arrived but had not been processed yet by CBP. Remember, over 100,000 de minimis packages arrive in the United States every hour. Not all of them are from China, of course, but that just means that CBP has to go through all the parcels that have recently arrived and separate out the ones from China.
And then, CBP could, of course, destroy the fentanyl packages, but the legal shipments have to be stored somewhere and then returned to their senders, since it’s the sender—not the recipient—that pays customs duties.
Oh, and did I mention the packages in China awaiting shipment to the United States? Since customers are unlikely to want to pay more to absorb the customs costs, and Shein, Temu, and others would be likely to retroactively add to their bills, the parcels had to return to the sellers and refunds had to be initiated.
Facing this mess, shipping giants threw up their hands. USPS and other freight companies suddenly had to deal with tons of packages with unclear destinations—and even less clarity about who would pay. USPS announced it was going to stop handling parcels from China altogether. Then, on Feb. 7, the White House announced the executive order would be delayed to give federal agencies more time to prepare. That suspension was, in fact, inevitable.
It makes sense to close the loophole. The $800 de minimis was a globalization-era luxury. Those who thought it up seem not to have countenanced the possibility of it being used for drug shipments, or that Chinese fast-fashion retailers would systematically use it to undercut competitors that ship and sell their goods the traditional way, via bulk country-to-country shipments and sales to consumers from warehouses or shops within the United States. When it’s closed, that’s going to mean a substantial blow to firms like Temu and Shein, which may not win favor with some of Trump’s allies who have their own stakes in those firms.
This hastily composed executive order has mostly brought chaos upon the United States, and now there’s the embarrassment of having to delay its implementation. That seems to be a consistent pattern with the new administration’s shotgun approach to governance. Trump, let me introduce you to a motto coined by Emperor Augustus: festina lente—make haste slowly.

My mom and I have taken two tour-group style outings for day trips outside of Amsterdam. I haven't loved either of them, but there were still things to enjoy about each. They both reminded me of that quote from A Room With a View:
We residents sometimes pity you poor tourists not a little - handed about like a parcel of goods from Venice to Florence, from Florence to Rome, living herded together in pensions or hotels, quite unconscious of anything that is outside Baedeker, their one anxiety to get 'done' and 'through' and go somewhere else. The result is they mix up towns, rivers, palaces in one inextricable whirl.
As hard as we tried to select options with plenty of free time to explore on our own, the logistics of a group tour feel very impersonal and almost time squandering. And the tour groups by design take you to the most touristy places. Theoretically, tour guide help make the experience more interesting, but most of the information is very superficial, nothing a quick internet search wouldn't tell you.

The above photo is from our day trip to Bruges. The tourists (ourselves included) were like ants crawling all over the city. It felt like Disneyland rather than a medieval Belgian city. Hard to appreciate what a special place it is.
On both of our tours, we befriended a solo traveler. I mentioned to mom that as a person who really enjoys solo travel, I don't think I would ever go on one of these excursions alone. I was having a really hard time explaining why.
It's not like these places aren't beautiful or worthy of seeing just because you're traveling alone. And surely there is a convenience in having someone arrange all the transportation for you. But for me the joy of solo travel is the insane amount of freedom I have to do and see whatever I want. And you just don't have that kind of freedom on these tours.
I like taking in a city by wandering around on my own, stopping when I see something interesting and looking it up online. Or following a walking tour at my own pace. Stopping for coffee and just people watching for a while. Learning the neighborhoods and enjoying them. This is a particularly nice thing to do in cities with good public transit or small city centers where I can really roam safely at my own leisure. I like starting in the tourist centers and radiating out. Going to a park or a botanical garden, hitting the museums.
I'm glad I got to see Bruges and Giethoorn, but I probably would never travel this way again.

Photo of my hand holding a baby desert tortoise at the Desert Tortoise Research Center at the Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Base in Twenty-Nine Palms, California:

Excerpt from this story from the LA Times:
A 3.5-million-acre swath of Mojave Desert between Ridgecrest and the Morongo Basin has received a new federal designation that advocates hope will help protect vulnerable wildlife like the Mojave desert tortoise.
The area has been named a sentinel landscape, a federally led effort to promote sustainable land-use practices near military installations.
“It’s built on partnerships,” said Phil Murray, encroachment manager for the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, one of five installations that surrounds the newly designated land. “A lot of the conservation work that’s done around the Morongo Basin or Mojave Desert is coordinated through different federal agencies, NGOs and private partners.”
The goal is to encourage a more collaborative approach, and to streamline federal assistance to the various agencies, groups and people involved, he said.
The designation doesn’t change who owns or manages the land and does not come with dedicated funding, aside from money for an implementation plan and a coordinator, Murray said. But sentinel landscapes are prioritized for funding through certain grants, he said.
The coalition is expected to support conservation efforts such as erecting desert tortoise fencing to reduce vehicle strikes, creating wildlife crossings, propagating seeds and rehabilitating habitat, including areas that have burned in wildfires, Murray said.
The Mojave Desert Land Trust expects to do much work on the ground, including helping with seed collection and outreach, said Cody Hanford, deputy executive director and chief conservation officer of the nonprofit dedicated to protecting the California desert.
“It will elevate our projects, elevate our goals, which I think in the end will help them become more accomplishable,” he said.
Other partners include various federal and state agencies, conservation groups and San Bernardino County.
The expanse of desert that received the designation is ringed by the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, National Training Center Fort Irwin, Edwards Air Force Base, Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake and Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow.
It’s also the heart of desert tortoise habitat in California, said Ken MacDonald, board member at-large and former president of the Desert Tortoise Council conservation group, a partner in the new effort.
“There’s recreational interests, tribal interests, local community interests,” he said. “So coming together as a partnership, we thought, would make the coalition and the cooperation more effective than everybody chipping away and working independently in their own backyard.”
“And so really, it’s to manage the whole 3 million acres cooperatively and collaboratively and be more effective in conserving and recovering the desert tortoises, and that’s pretty much it,” he said. “Just team up and take care of these critters.”
The stretch of desert includes at least 40 other protected species, including the Western Joshua tree, which California has protected with a conservation plan, and the Mohave ground squirrel, which the state lists as threatened.
But perhaps none is as imperiled as the desert tortoise, which California recently listed as endangered.
The species is facing pressure from a number of fronts, MacDonald said. The slow-moving reptiles are vulnerable to being hit by cars. Development has carved up previously wide-open stretches of desert into parcels that are in some cases too small to allow for the breeding and genetic diversity needed to sustain their population health. Drought conditions meant the wildflowers they like to eat never grew some years, and invasive species outcompeted them in other years.

Wait like what is the story about Jack and Tilly? How’d they get to know each other and like when??
Still figuring some of it (how sick are yall of that old refrain of mine?) but she is involved in the Red Cross prisoner parcels and there were a few gals who would sometimes leave notes and such along with the goods. And I’m not sure if I’m keeping her stateside with this work or if maybe she did go to Switzerland or Sweden both of which were huge distribution centers for the relief work. But any way. That was her war occupation and eventually Johnny Brady begins to write her back.
Honestly wanted her to be Lt. Richard Macon’s cousin. And I want that baby girl to be a logistics whizz and a schoolteacher before the war. She’s one smart and warm woman. Macon’s showing up in camp injured may be catalyst for Brady writing or not, I’m undecided.
. Also.
This babes met each other at the docks face to face for the first time. And smooched each others faces after a brief moment of probably wanting to cry instead. And sure half the stares were from an interracial couple necking in public but many were from the obvious connection these two were sharing. And then, loving each other and thinking each other very dishy and the reason for living these last years, they get married literal weeks later 🥰

But also for low car usership to be effective you do also need delivery services. Like. Go shop in person and they put your large stuff aside for you and a small box truck picks up parcels from a swathe of shops to take it to your neighborhood. IDK how the logistics work except not a gig worker in their car. And preferably not taking a train/bus there and a taxi home which used to be my go-to shopping method when I didn't have a car.
Also: Order groceries the day before and it's delivered on a regular route the next day is a much more rational than. instacart.
