Excerpt from this story from Canary Media:
Smart Wires has spent more than a decade putting its grid-boosting technology to the test in Australia, South America, and Europe. Now, the Durham, North Carolina–based company is finally getting a crack at projects in the U.S., backed by federal funds and policies supporting technologies that could unlock gigawatts of capacity on the country’s existing power grids.
In October, Smart Wires was selected for two projects that will receive a combined $60 million in U.S. Department of Energy funding. They will be the first large-scale U.S. deployments of Smart Wires’ SmartValve power flow control devices, which can digitally increase resistance on individual power lines in a transmission network to redirect power onto underutilized lines.
These advanced power flow control (APFC) systems are among a set of so-called grid enhancing technologies — GETs for short — that could play an important role in mitigating grid bottlenecks. These logjams block wind and solar farms from being connected to the grid, causing billions of dollars in congestion costs and making the grid less reliable during summer heatwaves and winter storms.
But U.S. transmission utilities, which earn money by building new infrastructure rather than making their existing transmission networks run more efficiently, have lagged other countries in deploying these technologies. That lag has spurred the Biden administration and some states to institute a set of policies to speed GETs deployments to help meet clean energy and grid reliability goals.
At an event last month to introduce a new grid modernization collaboration between the White House and 21 states, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm called GETs “the lowest-hanging fruit for being able to get additional capacity on the grid — and for the least amount of money.”
Ted Bloch-Rubin, Smart Wires’ director of business development for the Americas, was at last month’s White House event. “Secretary Granholm said what we’ve been trying to say for a long time,” he told Canary Media in an interview last month. “This is low-hanging fruit. Let’s get on it.”
Smart Wires’ U.S. efforts are among 58 projects across 44 states targeted for a total of $3.5 billion in DOE grid modernization grants from a program created by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
One of the company’s two projects is with transmission utility Vermont Electric Power Co. (VELCO) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and targets a key interconnection for moving wind and hydro power between New York and New England.

How Electric Actuator Valves Improve Safety and Control in Commercial Enterprises
In the fast-paced world of commercial and industrial operations, efficiency, safety, and control are paramount. One crucial component that plays a significant role in maintaining these elements is the electric actuator valve. This technology is revolutionizing industries by providing precise control over fluid and gas flow, while enhancing the safety protocols of operations. In this article, we will explore how electric actuator valves improve safety and control in commercial enterprises, and why they are essential for modern businesses.
What is an Electric Actuator Valve?
An electric actuator valve is a device used to regulate the flow of various substances such as liquids, gases, or slurries within pipes and ducts. The actuator is powered by electricity, which provides precise control over valve operation. This combination of electric power and valve technology allows for faster, more accurate responses to changes in system conditions, ensuring optimal flow control. Electric actuator valves are commonly used in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, oil and gas, water treatment, and HVAC systems.
How Electric Actuator Valves Enhance Safety
In commercial and industrial environments, safety is always a top priority. Electric actuator valves contribute to safety in several significant ways:
1. Improved Shutoff Capabilities
One of the primary safety features of electric actuator valves is their ability to quickly shut off flow when necessary. In cases of emergency, such as equipment failure or a hazardous leak, an electric actuator valve can be activated instantly to stop the flow of dangerous substances, preventing accidents and minimizing damage. Unlike manual valves, which rely on human intervention and can introduce delays, electric actuator valves provide automated shutoff, significantly reducing the risk of human error.
2. Precise Control and Monitoring
Electric actuator valves offer the advantage of remote control and continuous monitoring. This means operators can track and adjust the flow parameters of a system from a distance, without being physically present at the valve. This capability is particularly crucial for high-risk systems such as chemical processing or oil refineries, where even small fluctuations in pressure or temperature could lead to catastrophic outcomes. With real-time data feedback and precision control, electric actuator valves help operators make informed decisions, enhancing overall system safety.
3. Fail-Safe Features
Many electric actuator valves are designed with fail-safe mechanisms that ensure they default to a safe position in the event of power failure or system malfunction. These fail-safe designs guarantee that the valve will either open or close, depending on the application, to maintain the stability of the system. This automatic response adds an additional layer of security and helps prevent dangerous scenarios such as uncontrolled fluid or gas flow in critical systems.
How Electric Actuator Valves Improve Control in Commercial Enterprises
Apart from safety, electric actuator valves are essential for maintaining control in industrial and commercial operations. Here’s how they contribute to superior system control:
1. Enhanced Precision and Accuracy
Electric actuator valves provide unparalleled precision when controlling fluid or gas flow. The electric actuator allows for fine-tuned adjustments in response to changes in pressure, temperature, or flow rate. This level of control is critical in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and chemical processing, where exact measurements are required to maintain product quality and compliance with industry regulations.
The ability to regulate flow with high accuracy reduces the risk of overflows, product spoilage, and production inconsistencies, leading to better operational outcomes and improved product quality.
2. Automated and Remote Control
The automation capabilities of electric actuator valves are a significant advantage for business operations. With these valves, businesses can automate complex processes and workflows that would otherwise require manual intervention. This not only improves control but also reduces labor costs and the potential for human error.
Furthermore, the ability to remotely operate and monitor valves means that operators don’t need to be on-site to adjust settings. Remote monitoring is especially valuable in large-scale industrial facilities, where access to valves may be difficult or dangerous.
3. Integration with Smart Systems
As industries continue to adopt smart technologies, electric actuator valves are becoming increasingly integrated with digital control systems. These systems allow for seamless communication between the actuator valves and other equipment, such as sensors, alarms, and automated controls. This integration creates a more cohesive, responsive system that can make real-time adjustments based on changing conditions.
By leveraging smart systems, businesses can optimize their processes, improve efficiency, and prevent issues before they escalate into costly problems.
Frequently Asked Questions About Electric Actuator Valves
Q: What industries benefit most from electric actuator valves?
A: Electric actuator valves are widely used in industries such as manufacturing, oil and gas, water treatment, HVAC systems, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage production. These industries rely on precision, control, and safety, which makes electric actuator valves an ideal solution.

Passing the Test: Simulations at NYPA’s Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory for Energy Ensure System Reliability
Tumblr media
Our recently developed Advanced Grid Innovation Laboratory for Energy (AGILe) is already proving to be useful in deploying advanced new technologies on our generation and transmission system. AGILE’s real-time simulators use detailed digital models of the statewide grid to run hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests. In these tests, protective relays are physically hooked up to the digital simulator, allowing our engineers to evaluate and adjust equipment settings before installation on the grid.
We recently used AGILe to evaluate how the installation of SmartValve devices by Smart Wires Inc., part of the $15 million Moses-Adirondack Advanced Power Flow Control Project, could affect the grid. SmartValve technology allows for power to be pushed and pulled from congested to underutilized transmission lines, improving the flow of power along our north-south corridor. However, series devices like SmartValves can potentially cause instruments and protective relays to receive incorrect currents or voltages, or to falsely identify system faults. To proactively identify and correct for these factors, engineer Francisco Martínez utilized AGILe to test the potential impact SmartValves could have in order to mitigate any challenges before the technology is installed  on the grid.
Tumblr media
“At AGILe, we digitally simulated the SmartValves in the power system under fault conditions to test relay performance before installation of the new, non conventional elements in the system,” Martínez said.
Starting in March 2019, Martínez and his team developed the detailed system model and logic, deciding where and when to insert internal and external faults into the test system. The team ran approximately 3,000 fault scenarios with the new equipment modeled on the Moses-Adirondack transmission line to analyze how protective relays, the new equipment and the rest of the grid reacted.
Once testing was complete, Martínez and his team generated a report summarizing relay operation under various fault scenarios with the SmartValves installed. The report showed that the SmartValves had limited impact on the existing protection scheme and the grid continued to function as intended. This testing, completed in September 2019, ensured there were no unintended consequences from the technology integration. The installation of SmartValves is planned to begin in Fall 2020, with completion planned for Spring 2021.
Tumblr media
Before AGILe was developed, NYPA engineers relied on third-party labs to conduct system testing for non-conventional elements. Transitioning to internal NYPA resources makes testing faster and reduces the cost. NYPA teams are gaining valuable hands-on testing experience at
AGILe, which will make future testing projects even more cost-effective and timely as HIL testing becomes more important and widely adopted industrywide.
AGILe is already proving to be a key resource for us to maximize its efficiency without sacrificing reliability. Strategic investments like AGILe are helping us achieve its goal of becoming the first end-to-end digital utility.
