The more clips I watch of Moominvalley 2019 the more absolutely absurd snufmin becomes to me. The way they behave around each other, especially with how desperate Moomintroll gets when Snufkin is away, it feels so canon it's ridiculous. Like there's no way the creators don't ship it at least a little bit. This is Narumitsu "unnecessary feelings" levels of stupidly romantic

I’ve recently fallen into the Moomin sand pit and I’m so glad someone brought this up! I don’t think Moomin necessarily wants to “hang out” with Snufkin all winter— he’s grieving his absence because even in sleep he wants to know that Snufkin’s there. People talk about Snufkin’s selfishness and the fine balance of maturity and immaturity that keeps him such an enigma of a character but Moomin’s love is selfish as well. Even during the spring-fall he cannot be with Snufkin all the time (he has so many other friends and adventures!) He just wants to know that Snufkin will be there when he calls his name. I also believe he has an underlying fear that someday, Snufkin will leave and never come back. He wants the reassurance that they’ll be by each other’s side at all times— it’s selfish clinginess, it’s childish, it’s the purest form of love. Snufkin’s maturity hinges on him learning to sacrifice his comfort for the sake of his loved ones. Moomin’s maturity hinges on trusting that his loved ones will always return to him.

sorry to be moominposting but it's kind of funny how the fact that snufkin has to leave every year is made out to be the great tragedy of their existence when actually it's literally perfect that he has to leave in the same season moomin literally hibernates. bro even if he stays ur gonna be snoring

i think obviously we all [ or at least majority ] knew snufmin wasn’t going to be canon, i don’t think the creators would create such a drastic change to tove’s work and truthfully we’ll never know how canon snufmin would act regardless . the main issue i find with season 4 is that by them avoiding any queer coding that was established they just low key character assassinated their two most popular characters

again, the writers just avoided any queer coding that could have been picked up besides a few scenes, but usually the queer readings are done in the pov of moomin. scenes of moomin fawning over snufkin , waiting for him, the way his family and friends react to him over his ‘friendship’ with snufkin. while there are scenes of snufkins own queer readings, the first episode shows the feelings the pair have for example, season 4 has so much yearning on mostly snufkin part and then moomin has some. yet in the end those feelings are put aside and he goes back to snorkmaiden, and even their relationship feels kinda placed there because the vast development they had in past seasons. I feel like the trios development kept fluctuating, and I wish we got an episode similar to lonely mountains where we get to see them communicate about their feelings, maybe even a bit during the comet. but any communication or feelings was just placed to the side and it’s just unanswered now

Location wise they’re in Scotland, according to google they say Berk is based on an island “near Staffa of the inner Hebrides in Argyll and Bute in Scotland” so I think it’d be semi urbanized version of Berk? Not city city per say and not suburbs either, just village-like

Hiccup has this MASSIVE fixation on dragons, and he and his friends r on a bike gang and they travel a lot and it’s always hiccup pushing them to go further and further each time, to the dismay of his dad trying to teach him how to b responsible enough for [insert plot convenient position]

For Jack I’m not sure yet, maybe he just travels a lot (dunno y, maybe kinda like snufkin but instead of following spring he follows winter and boom he stumbles to berkkk heheheheheh, he might’ve decided to start traveling out of yearning for winter winds and he lets it LITERALLY guide him, I think I’d like if in this au he willingly left his home but got a goodbye, and def comes back every now and then, in between he writes letters (there’s a movie that’s like that abt a woman who travels w her daughter letting the north wind guide her, don’t remember name tho)) he hates shoes bc it keeps him from being able to razzmatazz, and hiccup’s poor poor anxiety can’t take it. He’s just a silly guy

The Dread Moomin Pirates AU

How Moomin Island Changed

Before Snufkin set out to join the male members of Moomin Island’s pirate community in one of their regular discussions in the middle of the market area, he decided that he needed Moomintroll’s support and presence, so he decided to confess everything that he had been doing to encourage the pirates to become more like the villagers of Moominvalley. When they both woke up that morning in Snufkin’s room, Snufkin told Moomintroll everything.

“I had a feeling that’s what you were up to. I’m not mad at you. I’m happy that you helped me open my eyes to what I was doing and how I was living. My entire family is too, although they’d be more uncomfortable admitting it. They also don’t know how to change course and what to do instead. I would be very happy if this island became another Moominvalley. But, I know that’s not enough. We have to make up for all the harm we’ve done. I know that you have some ideas.”, said Moomintroll

“I do. But, it would be better if Moominpapa, Captain Fuzzy, and Pirate Queen Mymble came together to make a better life for everyone here themselves. I can only hope to nudge them in the right direction. I need your help, though. I will definitely lose my courage if I try to do this alone. Will you join with me, from now on?”, asked Snufkin.

“Absolutely!”, Moomintroll responded. Before he realized what he was doing, he kissed Snufkin lightly on the cheek to seal his promise. They both reacted with surprise, and Moomintroll was about to apologize for moving forward in their relationship too quickly until Snufkin kissed him on the nose in return. They both blushed hard and headed downstairs to start their very important day.

The market area was run by the Hemulens in the community. They had built their own cottages separate from the headquarters of the pirates a bit to the South of them. The pirates naturally trusted them to help them exchange goods, supplies, and services for gold and treasure among themselves for fair prices and with total integrity. Snufkin and Moomintroll pretended to be shopping there as they waited for the male leaders of the pirates to gather there. They didn’t have to wait for long.

Moominpapa, Captain Fuzzy, and the eldest of Pirate Queen Mymble’s boys gathered in the center of the market area. They immediately noticed Snufkin and Moomintroll lurking about in the background and Moominpapa called them over.

“Now, boys, the two of you have been troubling all of our minds with thorny questions and reminders of my time in Moominvalley since the Moomin Pirates returned to the island. Now, you shouldn’t be anxious or afraid. You’ve brought up a number of problems that the three pirate groups have been trying to ignore for several years now. The fact of the matter is that we can’t afford to continue accumulating treasure like we have been……and we are all yearning for a quieter, happier life. But, we are not at all sure where to start. So, I want to hear your suggestions.”, said Moominpapa.

Snufkin gripped Moomintroll’s paw and proceeded: “What do you all REALLY like most about your life as pirates?”

“Going adventuring at sea, of course!”, answered Captain Fuzzy.

“Well, you can still live that adventurous life without stealing anything from anyone or spreading terror, can’t you?”, Snufkin said.

“What if we rescued ships and communities in distress instead of causing them distress? I really want to make up for all the wrong I’ve done, Papa! What if we were rescuers instead of killers?”, added Moomintroll.

“That’s a fine suggestion, my son! Now, please go on your way. We have a lot to talk about now!”, said Moominpapa.

“Do you really think that they’ll go through with all that change, Snufkin? I REALLY hope so!”, said Moomintroll as they walked away.

“We can only hope so. It’s really up to them, to all of you!”, replied Snufkin.

“Snufkin….do you really love me….despite the life I’ve lived….the terrible things that I’ve done?”, asked Moomintroll, looking a little desperate.

“You can’t change your past. But, you have already changed your future by deciding to go in a better direction. I love you for that, for the kind, loving beast I’ve seen inside of you almost from the start. I want to be better, kinder, too because of getting to know you and your family. Most of all, I want to be worthy of your love.”, said Snufkin.

“Oh, you are, you are!”, said Moomintroll. He impulsively hugged Snufkin.

Snufkin returned Moomintroll’s embrace and took his nose in his hands, raising it up to reveal his lips. Snufkin kissed him deeply and lovingly.

“What do you know, my head didn’t explode! Maybe you should try kissing me back just to be sure.”, said Snufkin.

Moomintroll was more than happy to oblige him.

Do tell me if there is an actual answer to this because I couldn't find such a thing myself or atleast stumble across it like I did with other characters but I do really wonder where Snorkmaiden's character came from.

In a world where much of the cast came from inspiration drawn upon Tove's own life, particular family or partners or memories (Signe is Moominmamma, Viktor is Moominpappa, Tove is vaguely Moomintroll, Atos is both Muskrat and Snufkin [and apparently Lars is Snufkin too?], Tove and Vivica are Thingumy and Bob, Tuulikki is Too-Ticky, Muddler is inspired by Tove's memories of playing with her aunt's buttons, Joxter and the Silk-Monkey are based on Tove's cat) Snorkmaiden feels like a very strange outlier amid all of this despite being an important character in the books and a core family member in the comics.

I suppose Sniff's lack of clear inspiration is something I wonder about too but Snorkmaiden grew into something more nuanced as Sniff became pushed into the background as the original series went on (in the comics), she feels she should be someone or something in Tove's life but I can't tell who or what.

I was in the midst of doing a book report on this realist-era novel called Madame Bovary and I discovered how similar the titular Emma Bovary is to Snorkmaiden's comic characterization; A woman who was bound by the small mundanity of her real life that so contradict her romantic idealism which she absorbed from books, becoming so wretchedly displeased and bored of her milk-toast and simple-minded first love and husband (who married her mostly because of her beauty and a forbidden infatuation and not really anything else) that she can't help but chase after men who she finds more stimulating and exciting and rich, constantly yearning for the romance of the upper class and growing resentful of the quant country life she's made to live in and so she spends lavishly, creating a devastating dept that would ultimately pull her hand to a painful suicide (well, maybe not that last part, but still). And there are arguable parallels between Moominpappa and Emma's husband's father, as he was surprisingly similar to Emma in his lavish spending and scorned his son for how boring he is.

Of course, it isn't a one-to-one comparison persé due to the personal circumstances of their characters, but the strong parallels that Snorkmaiden grew into as a character in the comics is still incredibly striking. It makes me believe she was merely a female love interest tacked on for the male protagonist - simply because that's how adventure stories usually go - who grew into a satire of such a trope, a character confounded by a Bovarism and romantic excitement she wants to relive again and again when things become too stale for her.

But, of course, this is just a theory based on a thought I had while trying to do a book report for my language studies class, I could be completely completely wrong and the answer is that she's based on some other girlfriend Tove had, who knows.

Ranting about snufmin (S4 spoilers maybe(?)

Was rewatching clips of them from past seasons and the finale hurts even more because the creators just threw away all their relationship growth from 5 years to make it seem like moomin is still trying to be in a relationship with snorkmaiden and same with her, like pleaseee I thought they would both realize they don't have chemistry and they're better off as friends (comphet snorkmaiden /j) and the many many many scenes all since episode 1 from SEASON 1 there were hints to something in snufkin and moomin's relationship, it's so so so sad because I would've accepted the way it ended this season if it weren't because of the fact that it was a season AND series finale!! And a complete 180 of what they were like in the other seasons :(

Like sure, they had their moments like them wanting to spend winter together alone in the moominhouse but kept getting interrupted by the woodies (like they were their children,,,) or snufkin going with moomin in the quest of going to the observatory in the comet special. And in the second episode of S4 them having a short heartfelt talk that literally everyone watching thought they were going to lean in and kiss. BUT NOOO, THEY JUST KEPT TRYING TO PUSH THE MOOMIN X SNORKMAIDEN DYNAMIC, GIRL LET IT GO THEY DIDN'T WORK OUT THE PREVIOUS SEASONS COME ONNNN

And just the way snufkin looked at moomin with a smile and heart eyes and laughing at his bad jokes and being there for him..... Man. Man. I'm in pain, this is not fair ☹️

Like rewatching their moments from past seasons is so painful because it's all that build up for nothing,,, the zoom in when they held paws, them leaning to each other when they were looking at the northern lights, ALL THE YEARNING AND PINING........

anyways i find him relatable.. something something vulnerability hard and shit yada yada but ALSO i make weird squawking/squeaky noises when im annoyed and i like to imagine he does that with the chirping... its funny

your worst fears come true. youll never let it happen again. youll stand straight, youll make yourself seem bigger to scare off anyone who tries to come close to you. which leads to anyone who couldve helped you being dissuaded and backing off. serves them right, you never needed fixing. you never needed anyone. ...the clycle begins again. it aches. why? it shouldnt. that isnt allowed.

they should stop that, stop poking at the weak spots. it hurts to feel. you KNOW its to help. you dont want to be helped. stop it, stop. everyones going to know. they cant know it aches. theyll use it against you. keep kneeling, head lower, arch your back. maybe theyll be amused enough to give you mercy.

i honestly love his aesthetic i dont know why. the tv/light/dream shit has a lot of potential methinks. i love the thought of a job swap au where prismo uses light/tech as a way to interact with the world while still being stuck somewhere else... and also the visual funkiness of him being projected onto many many tv screens brings me joy. i want that gender...

also. in general i love it when gods are depicted ss being really mortal-like... like, youre a cosmic being with power and omnipotence over the multiverses you watch over, and yet. you like sandwiches and pools and games and hanging out wih friends and its just. on every level but literal you are mortal and alive and wholly r e a l. but youre not. youre a dream, a projection, youre not even in the dimensions of the people you (love) watch. youre an outsider and its very clear. youre THIS CLOSE to being just like them. but youre not. and you never will be.

youre admired by those who are like you, but you dont really care for it. but those who you do care about either dont see you as anything more than a tool to manipulate the multiverse or see you as too grand to be able to connect with in a way that isnt "you are god and i am not". youre stuck in a prison you yourself control. but a prison is still a prison. people want what you have- how you wished they had it instead of you! maybe then, youd be loved. maybe then, things wouldnt be so ear-deafingly quiet. silence sticks out like a sore thumb in the yearning- the wish to not be alone.

i love how people interpret his personality... and i love seeing all the potential angst/drama/whatever you call it that could pop up because of how avoindant he is... and his relationships with the other characters... the way he so easily distances himself from others while (i know this isnt about him but once you talk deeply about one of them i suppose you cant leave out the other) moomintroll clings a little too hard onto him...

ill be honest im a bit rusty on anything moomin related, so forgive my poor memory + hesitation, but i do love em a lot still!!! no hyperfixation is dead, just dormant, as they say........... havent thought about them in a while but i should really brush up on everyones characters and the way they interact ... would be really helpful for some analysis and application to my own work and- YEAH WHATEVER YOU GET IT NEXT ONE

A DAY OR TWO LATE (am I really late if mermay isn't over yet?), BUT I GOT YOU GUYS A LONG POST WITH THE GOOD STUFF FOR MOOMINSEA AU:

Since Snorks are just color-changing Moomintrolls with longer fur, I decided Snorkfishes are just color-changing Moominfishes with longer fins (*accidentally draws the trans pride fish with Snorkmaiden*);

For Sniff, I got help from @lonesome-vagabond, who straight up told me to look up for sea dragons. I don't think he meant an actual Phycodurus, but I swear that when my eyes landed on that small long-nosed and long-tailed scaredy-cat thing I only saw Sniff. So Sniff is a Phycodurus;

Now, of course Little My's best sea-species match would be a siren/mermaid once she is definitely the type to drown sailors and fishermen for fun unlike Selkies do, but I thought a lot about it and I got to the conclusion: all Mymbles should be Selkies. It's not only because of the sweet and carefree nature Mymbles and Selkies have in commun (which we know Little My goes against), but also because of the way both Mymbles and Selkies are absolute simps (again, Little My goes against the two species' nature),

Can't you just see that happening between Mymble Jr and her little siblings? Also, if Moominsea's Snufkin is a Selkie, his mother is automatically a Selkie too, while Joxter is a human.

Now, thinking about Mymble(mamma), she'd be the traditional "I go to the beach to have some cake by the ocean and go back underwater with a child, as my hobbie" type of Selkie, so Joxter would be one of the many sailors/fishermen she saved/found by the beach and had a romantic relationship with only to have a baby Selkie (Snufkin) and take him with her. If Snufkin had been born a human, maybe he'd have gotten to live with his father instead.

Where is Joxter now? Nobody knows. Some say he moved away from the beach, others say he died of broken heart. But Snufkin believes Joxter is still out there trying to find his lost baby, and goodness, he'd give anything to meet his human father during his winter trips too.

has nobody ever thought of how if snufkin represents independence and freedom due to his nature and characteristics while moomintroll represents comfort, familiarity, and home, both of them just inherently yearn for one another in a metaphorical sense

because moomintroll’s character arc is learning to be alone sometimes. he craves independence from his parents and those who coddle him, and eventually he achieves it. he yearns for independence, and snufkin embodies that.

snufkin is similar. he never grew up with a home, joxter/mymble having left him in a box as a child, and his very nature defies any semblance of staying put — he must wander, he must travel, and to do that he must not have many ties.

moominvalley — and, more likely than not, moomin himself — changes that, even if slightly. he will always wander. he will always crave a sense of travel and the freedom which comes from it. but at the end of the day, snufkin needs somewhere to return to, he yearns for it, and moominvalley, especially a particular moomin within it, provides that to him. snufkin yearns for home, and home to him is moomintroll.

so those are my two cents
