Welcome to the Sun Dog AU!🛸
An alternate universe based in the general Moomin franchise created by @flowerbloom-arts, this blog follows the story of Sniff and a few other people in Moominvalley as strange things happen that have to do with their sky.
Sniff is an odd and easily tempted child who may not remember much of his own past, but perhaps time will tell if he is involved with these supernatural shenanigans!

Character Reference Sheets
Each character may be close in design to their canon counterpart (particularly those of the 90s series of Moomin) but they intentionally veer off from them in certain aspects such as the color of a certain primary colored clothing piece or some details which may come in play into the dialog or story.
So these are the characters who have reference sheets thus far:
Sniff
Query (original character)
Snufkin
Moomintroll, Moominmamma, Moominpappa, the Snork Maiden
The Inspector, Stinky, the Muskrat, Mr. Hemulen, Little My, Cedric
Miscellaneous Memories
There are some (rather important) moments or information which don't fit into the main storyline due to timeline issues or simply not fitting into the flow of the narrative, so comics like these are put into their own tag to avoid any messes. Some of these are word-for-word adaptations of the original source material.
These moments are listed in order of timeline instead of order of posting.
Sniff meets the Moomins (Moomins and the Great Flood)
Fearing a ‘secret society’ (Comet in Moominland)
The visit to the Observatory (Comet in Moominland)
First Hibernation (Finn Family Moomintroll, mostly not in book)
A boat made of false teeth (Finn Family Moomintroll, not in book)
The Trial (Finn Family Moomintroll)
The Hobgoblin grants wishes (Finn Family Moomintroll)
Illustrations
While often generally unimportant for information or details, it's nice to have them put in a list like this for viewing convenience, I like to get a little more 'pretty' with drawings like these.
These illustrations are listed in order of posting rather than in-universe timeline.
Sniff with a pearl necklace
100 follower special
Meteor Shower (song)
200 follower special
1 year anniversary special
Tarot Cards
‘The Fool’ (upright)
‘The Fool’ (reversed)
FAQ
Standing for "frequently asked questions", these are questions about the AU which should be basic or fundamental to understand so that they may not be asked over and over again by those interacting with the blog.
-
When does the story take place?
- The story starts in the summer of 1949, less than 4 years after Sniff was found in a supersized dark forest by Moominmamma and Moomintroll while on their search for Moominpappa. After that, it's just a matter of figuring out the timeline yourself.
Which adaptation is this story following?
- The story is its own canon which is a unique hodgepodge of details and stories from the books, the comics, and details or information sprinkled in from the 90s series and even Moominvalley 2019.
Did the stories made by Tove Jansson happen in this AU?
- With very few details skewed here and there, the first few Moomin books (Moomins and the Great Flood, Comet in Moominland and Finn Family Moomintroll) have taken their place over the course of a year and a half from 1945-1946 in-universe. There are also a few comic stories, if changed in detail, which have already taken place for the 2 years before the story begins, these comics are; Moomin's Desert Island, Moomin Builds a House, Moominmamma's Maid, Club Life in Moominvalley, Moomin Falls in Love, Moomin's Lamp and Mymble's Diamond.
Other stories (from the books and comics) may happen in between or in the background of chapters, though chapters themselves will also follow some pre-existing storylines.
[More will be added in the future]

Comic-based episode ideas for Moominvalley seasons 2+
Half a wishlist and half just tossing around ideas for pieces that could translate well into an animated series.
Moomin Begins a New Life: This story’s never been on screen before and while I wouldn’t expect to see the... less than family friendly material used, some of it is very cartoonishly funny - like scenes of the Moomin family trying and failing to help various citizens (without their permission). Plus I’d like to see our 2019 drama queen Moomin take to the role of a highwayman.
Moomin and the Martians: We’ve seen this one adapted twice in the fuzzy felt and 90s series, but with animation limitations and tonal differences to consider, neither were as silly as the source material. The pranks that Moominpappa and the kids get up to would be a lot of fun especially, but there’s a ton of material here that would suit what seems to be a more comedy driven series. Little My could even get some competition from the shrunken down Moomin and Moominmamma.
Club Life in Moomin Valley: Another never-before-seen on screen story and I can’t imagine why! It has everything: crime, secrecy, double lives, and hardcore violence, while functioning as a potential basis for a sweet mother-son episode. This could also be a fun introduction to Stinky should he ever be included in the new series, and he deserves a chance to bond with Moominmamma too!
Moomins on the Riviera: You may say it’s too soon for a new telling of this story, but I wonder what sort of spin they would put on it, and I am interested in how the world outside of Moomin Valley would look in the universe of this new series. Perhaps they could shake up the cast a bit, and give us a glimpse at how Snufkin interacts with the outside world.
Moomin and Family Life: Before you tell me that this story already provided inspiration for the ninth episode of the current Moomin show: I know. However, it lacked any reference to Aunt Jane, who could easily fill an episode alone. Being my favourite of the comic stories, no list I write would be complete without at least a mention.

Okay so... Since you tagged me, I'll just put in my 2 cents here.
I've already answered a question about Moomin ages before but I'm going to go into depth about the book ages.
Nobody is arguing that the characters aren't children in the books... The first half of them, atleast.
Most of the books in English have been translated and published by Ernest Benn from the 50s to the 70s, with the sole exception of Moomins and the Great Flood which was lost to the English until 2012 with David McDuff's translation. The reason why I specify this is because Ernest Benn's translations have been the primary English translation that many people in the UK would get their hands on, but there may be discrepancies on the language used especially to refer to the characters when translating these, so if there are differences in other translations in other languages just know that I'm using these translations as my source.
Now, using the word search function and checking the context in which these words are used;
in Moomins and the Great Flood Moominmamma refers to the rest of the cast as children about 5 times.
In Comet in Moominland the main characters are referred to as "child" or "children" 10 times both in narration and dialog, with Moomintroll being referred to as "Moomin-child" 3 times.
In Finn Family Moomintroll the main characters are called children 7 times.
In Exploits of Moominpappa, in the intermissions where we see Moominpappa talking to Moomintroll, Snufkin and Sniff, they are called children 3 times. (In Moominpappa's Memoirs - the revised version of the story - the book literally starts with "Once, when Moomintroll was quite small", and they're called children 3 times aswell.)
This drop is understandable because the book is mostly about Moominpappa, but here's where the children being called children almost stops entirely;
In Moominsummer Madness Moominmamma says children once (it's unclear who exactly she's referring to, but she says it while telling them that the tea is getting cold), another time when she's mourning Snorkmaiden and Moomintroll getting lost and uses "Moomin-child" in the same dialog, and that's it.
In Moominland Midwinter there isn't a single use of the word child.
In Tales From Moominvalley, none of the instances of the word child or children are used to refer to the original main cast.
In Moominpappa at Sea Moominmamma uses "my child" as a term of affection towards Little My once.
In Moominvalley in November, there are only 4 instances and only one of them truly implied that Toft was a child.
What could this mean? Well, it could mean that the children have grown up after Moominpappa's Memoirs, how old exactly is terribly up for debate (this is a problem with vague ages in general but I'm not going to speculate exact age ranges myself).
We know that in the first 4 books they are children, even vocabulary aside they certainly act like children (you've already listed some of the evidence yourself). But afterwards it gets really tricky. Are they teens? Adults? Is there really a big time skip in Moominsummer Madness?
Snufkin starts smoking in Moominsummer Madness, the legal age of smoking in Finland is 18 years, but we know Snufkin is certainly not a law-abiding citizen so he could very easily be smoking earlier than he should. But otherwise there's definitely a lack of that childish game-playing that we had before; they aren't playing pretend, they aren't stuffing themselves in sweets, they aren't as small as they used to be next to the parents.

I think the main reason why people age the characters up is that the later books seemingly do so, and the staff of Moominvalley 2019 have confirmed that Moomintroll is 16 at the start of the series (so, by that logic, Moomintroll would be about 19 or so in the end of season 3). There's also a few things off about other adaptations that misdirect people into thinking they're not children, such as Snufkin, and the comics most certainly not depicting them as children.
Because of the most recent adaptation, alot of people view them as teenagers. And alot of depictions of them as adults are either what-if scenarios exploring the avenue of them being grown up or simple claims justifying people doing.. things.. with them.
I wouldn't find this an issue until people start using specific versions of Moomin and misrepresent their ages unless it's specified that their work takes place in the future of that version.
(Also I have soooooooooooo many issues with that timeline but I am not going to go into it)
moomins adultification problem
I recently read some posts by  @writers-in-moominvalley and felt inspired to do my own. so i decided to make
moomins adultification problem
what do I mean by this? I mean that the community treats moomin like an adult/teen when he…. isn’t. sorta. so to explain,  MOOMIN IS VERY MUCH A KID. in the moomins debut book “moomins and the great flood” moomin and sniff are shown to be young. both in height difference and in behaviour
Tumblr media Tumblr media
moomin is shown as small, infantile, and naïve. hell, theres even a scene in the book where moomin and sniff eat so much candy in a willy wonka type candyland that they get tummy aches and even throw up!
Tumblr media
comet in moominvalley also takes it time proving this theory further, moomin spends his time building a swing and playing with sniff at the beach. moomin is shown to not particularly care about the pearls worth, but rather it being pretty, later, he goes home and gives it too his mom. hes still shown to be very childish, such as the scene nobody seems to remember from the books in which they walk into a store, take some things, and then are surprised once its revealed that they have to pay. luckily, the old lady running the store is kind and decides to let them take these things without paying. moomin is also shown to be naive in this story and desperately tries to impress snorkmaiden and fantasizes a bit.
in finn family moomintroll he plays hide and seek with his friends, as well as doing many things children would do like playing tarzan. notice something? this is not “teenage behaviour” some people point out there are time skips between books, which is correct, but ill let this timeline here do the talking
Tumblr media
so why do people age moomin up? After a helpful comment I decided to rewrite this, perhaps they were introduced to moomin through the moominvalley 19 series, which ages up moomin.
