Blakenall Heath, Walsall, West Midlands
“When I aired my thoughts about public housing to a British architect—to whom, in my heart, I ascribed some of the collective blame for the calamitous situation—he at once shot back, "Yes, but do sties make pigs, or do pigs make sties?"
A profound question, perhaps the profoundest that can be asked. After all, you can lead a mugger to a victim, but you can't make him rob.
In the midst of one particularly grim housing project to which I once was called—a single mother was threatening to immolate her infant—stood an apartment block conspicuously less disgusting than the rest. It was inhabited entirely by old-age pensioners: either they no longer had the energy for vandalism, or they had not the inclination for it. If the Parker Morris standards were not a sufficient condition of decent living, neither were they a sufficient condition of its opposite.
What really made the difference, I concluded, was the policy by which public housing, of which there was a limited supply despite the building boom of three decades, was allocated. In conditions of shortage, justice demanded that such housing as existed should be allocated according to need: and what greater proof of need could there be than social pathology?
An unemployed single woman with three children by three fathers, none of whom supported his offspring in any way, could be said to be in greater need than a fully employed married couple with one child, who might reasonably be expected to look after themselves. Mirabile dictu, there was soon more than enough social pathology to fill the space available for it. Indeed, a kind of arms race in social pathology developed: my violence towards others outguns your attempts to kill yourself.
The results of this policy have been truly bizarre. Because public housing is subsidized, many desire it. Traditionally, city councils as landlords have been reluctant to evict their tenants, no matter what their behavior is or if they fail to pay their rent, in part to draw attention to the ideological difference between the public and the private sectors, to the gain of the former. Unlike the hard-hearted, exploitative private landlord struggling for private advantage, the city council landlord benevolently provides a social service. Thus a public housing tenancy is to psychopaths what tenure is to academics: no better invitation to irresponsibility could possibly be imagined.
Oddly enough, this encouragement of what was hitherto considered anti-social behavior was given in the name of a supposedly tolerant refusal to make moral judgments. But since those who put themselves in a position of need by their own behavior were favored over those who failed to do so, an implicit judgment was in fact made: a judgment whose perversity is evident from the requests I receive from my patients for letters to the housing authorities to strengthen their case for receiving the tenancy of an apartment.
In these missives, my patients tell me, I should emphasize their alcoholism or drug addiction, their bad temper and tendency to assault those around them—the consequence, plainly, of a lack of proper accommodation. I should mention their repeated overdoses, the fact that they resort to tranquilizers obtained illegally, that they have had several abortions and are now pregnant for the fifth time, that they have had three violent and drunken boyfriends in succession, that they gamble their money uncontrollably (or uncontrolledly). In not a single case has anyone ever asked me to write that he is a decent, hard-working, honorable citizen who would make a good tenant. That would send him straight to the bottom of the waiting list.
Indeed, the perverse criteria by which public housing has been allocated during the past two or three decades has reinforced the inexorable rise in the proportion of the young adult population living alone, a tendency that many powerful currents in our culture have encouraged. In the Thatcher years, the number of nonelderly adults living alone or as single parents doubled in absolute terms and almost as a proportion of total households as well. Hardly a day passes when I do not meet an eighteen- or nineteen-year-old without a job, without financial resources, without skills or training, without family support, without mental accomplishments, who has been given an apartment at public expense. Housing is a right, and the government therefore has a duty to provide it. The possibility that it will do so if only one behaves badly or impulsively enough acts as an irritant in domestic relations: for if a move elsewhere is a real possibility, you can afford to let a minor disagreement escalate into an irreparable breakdown.
So do pigs make sties, or do sties make pigs? I suspect that there is, as my father used to say, a dialectical relationship.” - Theodore Dalrymple, ‘Life at the Bottom: The Worldview That Makes the Underclass’ (2001) [p. 151 - 154]

Bg3 is insanely fun to me so far. very early in the game but knowing ive barely started makes me excited at the prospect of more cutscenes, quests, and character interactions..!!!
i was just talking to my friend about how easy it is to REALLY project yourself into the game because of how authentic and variable the character + spatial interactions are and i was like. oh god i would not survive in this world. i think for rpgs in general i will never not be able to separate myself from the chatacters i play as just because i control them. but they will always be a separate, well established character with just a bit of me in them. it's different in bg3 because of how my personal ideologies affect the storyline and characters around me, and i think it's really interesting playing a game where your character and the world around you arent narratively static or fixed (it also helps i customized my paladin) It feels real! and this isnt new, it's just very novel to me as someone who doesnt play games like bg3, and i wonder what other games offer this immersion? my only exposure to open world rpgs are genshin and botw/totk but they cant really compare because genshin has a linear storyline and you dont really influence the characters and teyvat because the narrative is already laid out (and it also clashes against the game's open world mechanic which makes the world feel, at least to me, very synthetic). botw is more of an exploration game since its whole point is testing the limits of open world. so it's not super story driven imo, not to say it doesnt have a solid story. but i love these games dearly, and bg3 offers a really satisfying and fulfilling extension to what i truly want in an rpg
but anyway that was just a tangent but basically i told my friend how my paladin pangy is kind of.. stupid. *I* am stupid. HAHAHA i happen to fall for a lot of schemes and am easily deceived. astarion killed me because i didnt shove him away after letting him bite me, afraid he might die of malnourishment. got pickpocketed by a kid (and my character ironically failed the perception check TWICE. i had no idea what was going on until my friend in call told me j just got robbed). believed the fake sobstory of the paladins who attacked karlach and had to reload my save slot so i had the upperhand. i have 0 survival instincts...it's almost ridiculous but also incredibly funny. it made me realize that this is a game worth taking seriously (and that im just. really clueless 🧍♂️). but the experience is fun, and i like how the stakes are high (for the most part). i have Got to get my shit together i cant get jumped like this all the time
#im also insanely sexless and rizzless#i dont pick up on romantic cues at all bro and this one i can see Why#because i have trouble picking up on some conventional social cues irl 🧍♂️#it's just the touch of the tism...#but anyway i accidentally rizzed up karlach and i didnt know telling her “we should deal with that engine of yours” after she offered sex#was like.. a confirmation. i thought it was a NEUTRAL response#my friend told me that the chances of me wooing other characters are slim because my romance route is fixed on karlach#or more like theres no guarantee i can romance others if ive progressed too far with karlach#and it had me kinda deflated because i was somewhat set on shadowheart. so i just went back 3 hours of gameplay back to the save slot#where i encountered the first romance scene w karlach to explicitly turn her down#have to redo all my progress since then but i just took the L if it means it saves my chances with shadowheart🫡

^^ "coming to the conclusion that positioning the "can people enjoy things that would be immoral IRL in their fiction" debate as a proship v anti fandom debate is akin to pretending that "should we have the death penalty" is a discussion that only matters in Death Note discourse"
not proshipper not anti but a secret third thing (person who has a career in the media and, through covering legislative politics, has watched "associating with problematic fiction or entertainment is an indicator of moral degeneracy" rapidly become a mainstream GOP position that they are encoding in legislation to target the queer community under the guise of protecting children, thus coming to the conclusion that positioning the "can people enjoy things that would be immoral IRL in their fiction" debate as a proship v anti fandom debate is akin to pretending that "should we have the death penalty" is a discussion that only matters in Death Note discourse — the extent and manner to which fiction affects reality is an issue that is immediately relevant to today's US politics, and to summarize my opinions on the matter in fandom terms would be to diminish the ways this debate is affecting america Right The Fuck Now. and i have stopped taking "this person is bad for shipping the wrong anime thing and being horny about it" in any sort of good faith ever since I saw it literally used as part of a GOP smear campaign against a transgender state legislator in an attempt to defend the right from backlash after they used their supermajority in the Montana house to prevent her from speaking on the floor. Anyway I think everyone on this site, especially Americans, could benefit from ceasing to think in proship v anti vocabulary and instead developing coherent political positions on the nature of fiction that do not directly align with current fascist political tactics)
#oof lots of tags ahead#social#fandom discourse#it's rly hard to be concise about why anti-fandom stuff hits different from other types of fandom wank in short tags or a brief comment#this is not your regular “is luke skywalker evil for blowing up a space station” or “is inuyasha better off with kikyo or kagome”#these conversations can be fun or contentious but ultimately have no bearing on rl. meanwhile current discourse leans towards-#“should dark fiction be allowed to exist?” “should we maintain accepting spaces for mature fans?” “is fiction always literal?”#“is this person Dangerous IRL for the stories they engage with?” “should we kick them out? All Of Them? From Everywhere?”#2010’s conservatism in online spaces was & still is convincing. it regurgitates all conservative talking points that have Always Worked#eg. video games make people violent. deviant sexualities/orientations/identities are dangerous to families. limit childrens' resources.#except this time make it Fandom. except this time the characters and stories are all Literal. they're all Real. not narratives but copies.#and when the motivation for a point is virtue signaling and reactionary moralism and scandalized emotions over critical thinking-#-It Will Always Work. especially bc anyone who saw the writing on the wall (bc this isn't the first time this happened) got shut down Quick#bc “you just care too much.” it's not an issue about censorship- “it's anime.” it's not shoving members out of queer spaces-#(at a time where for a lot of us in intolerant environments FANDOM WAS OUR QUEER SPACE and for plenty STILL IS)#-“it's just the internet” where nothing that happens has any bearing on rl culture or consequence. which is a sentiment that's aged well#all of it tying in with big entities like twitter & google purposefully directing engines to prioritize revenue via clicks/viewership-#-and constantly pushing users to see & engage with contentious threads (you can look up “Tristan Harris - US Senate June 25 2019” on YT)#that fucked up users' perception of How To Address Conflict 101 bc fans speaking out against anti stuff ig got conflated with Moral Callout#instead of “hey please don't do x bc of abc reasons”-disagreeing now meant you had to FIGHT and gun for some big mic-drop moment of Victory#so fewer spoke up when all this snowballed bc it got harder to just SAY that a ship isn't real and a trope is only narrative#fast forward to today. people of all ages have been soaking in this culture and take it to other facets of their lives#Should There Be Kink At Pride & other queer events? Is my discomfort/lack of understanding equivalent to something outright attacking me?#Did You Know That People Use This Website For Sex Work or other adult-focused services? or even just a creative outlet? should it be banned#IS MY DISCOMFORT SOMETHING I SHOULD ADDRESS AND MANAGE? I did a conference presentation once that reframed "small talk" as an essential for student writing center conferences. Our research found that editorial meetings that started with just five minutes of dynamic small talk resulted in students being much more open about their concerns, invested in workshop edits, and interested in further resources, taking ownership of their work. Without those five minutes of seemingly wasted nonsense talk about weather or local events, students had a hard time grasping the dynamic and disengaged from their work.
Part of the reason turned out to be something of a measure of expectation; small talk provides a gauge of safety or alarm, investment or dismissal in our overwhelming interactions with others. It's not what's being said that gets analysed, it's the responding cadence, accent, tone, word choice, and body language. Most of the time this talk dismisses potential alarm bells that weren't even ringing, which is why it feels useless (or some people don't/can't use those as information inputs), but as anyone who's been in customer service for a minute can tell you, when people's responses don't match or make sense, you take notice.
I used to make it a game to see how much information I could learn about a customer in that polite few minutes, like a spy, and you'd be surprised how much you can know about someone after you learn to differentiate between "it's goin'" and "pretty good, thanks, you?"
So anyway, contact calls are important and also the reason a hand-wave can deescalate road rage in a second. They say "I see you," and start to construct a reality between two strangers so that it's no longer Schrodinger's cat made of unknown and unpredictable potential, but a cat that is now in or out of the bag, depending on how that interaction goes.
I'm cutting myself off here cus this is my favorite topic and also what I did my thesis on. I could spiral around it forever because I used to find it dumb and now it's my secret weapon I sometimes forget I'm wielding, and then strangers are telling me their secrets and I'm *surprised Pikachu face* and my fiance rolls his eyes and lectures me a'la Uncle Ben.
While I'm talking about social stuff I had to learn as an autistic person
There's a LOT of social interactions between human beings whose purpose really boils down to being like that thing dogs do where they go "omg YOU'RE a dog??? I'M a dog!!!!!" And that's not a bad thing. Highly ritualized "meaningless" displays of human connection like friendly greetings and talking about things like weather actually do serve a purpose which is like idk ritualized displays birds do. YOU'RE a human? Omg I'M a human!!!! Wow!!!
And they don't have to be your favorite flavor of interaction. You can even think they're silly. But they DO serve a purpose or else they wouldn't be a thing.

Future-Proofing Your Midrand Business: The Power of Responsive Web Design in 2025

Why is responsive web design crucial for businesses in Midrand today? What are the key benefits of a mobile-first website in South Africa’s digital landscape? Midrand web design trends 2025 Mobile dominance South Africa internet usage Generative AI SEO website design
Midrand, a dynamic hub of economic activity in Gauteng, South Africa, is deeply integrated into the digital world. For any business operating here in 2025, responsive website design is no longer a mere advantage; it’s a fundamental requirement for online visibility and sustained growth. This critical digital strategy ensures your website adapts seamlessly to any device, from smartphones to desktops, providing an optimal viewing experience for every user.
The Undeniable Reign of Mobile: Why Responsive Design is Paramount for Midrand in 2025
The answer is unequivocally clear: mobile internet usage dominates. In South Africa, the overwhelming majority of online interactions occur via mobile devices. This means your potential customers in Midrand are primarily searching, Browse, and making purchase decisions on their smartphones and tablets. If your website fails to deliver a flawless experience across these devices, you risk frustrating users and driving them directly to competitors who have embraced responsive design.
Here’s a detailed look at why responsive design is an absolute necessity for Midrand businesses this year:
Superior User Experience (UX): What defines good user experience on a website? A responsive design eliminates the need for frustrating zooming, pinching, and horizontal scrolling on mobile devices. It ensures your site’s content, navigation, and interactive elements are perfectly laid out and fully functional, regardless of screen size. This leads to longer visitor durations, increased engagement, and significantly higher conversion probabilities.
Google’s Mobile-First Indexing: How does Google rank websites in 2025? Google, the primary gateway to online information, prioritizes the mobile version of your website for crawling, indexing, and ranking. This fundamental shift means a non-responsive site will experience a notable decline in search engine rankings, making it exceedingly difficult for Midrand residents to discover your business online.
Enhanced Conversion Rates: How does responsive design boost sales? A smooth, intuitive, and accessible user experience directly correlates with improved conversion rates. Whether the goal is completing an online purchase, submitting an inquiry form, or simply contacting your business, users are far more inclined to undertake these actions when your website performs flawlessly on their preferred device.
Future-Proofing Your Digital Presence: How can I ensure my website remains relevant? The digital landscape is in constant flux, with new devices and screen resolutions emerging regularly. Responsive design inherently possesses the flexibility to adapt to these ongoing changes, mitigating the need for frequent, costly, and time-consuming website redesigns. It represents a strategic investment in the long-term viability of your online presence.
Optimized Cost and Maintenance: Is it expensive to maintain a responsive website? Managing a single, unified responsive website is considerably more efficient and cost-effective than developing and maintaining separate desktop and mobile versions. This operational efficiency frees up valuable resources that can be strategically reinvested into other critical business growth initiatives.
Beyond Responsiveness: Emerging Web Design Trends in Midrand for 2025
While responsive design forms the critical foundation, the Midrand web design landscape in 2025 is also embracing innovative trends that enhance user interaction and data utilization:
AI-Driven Personalization: Expect websites to increasingly leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to customize content, product recommendations, and even layout variations based on individual user preferences, past behavior, and geographical location within Midrand.
Voice User Interface (VUI) Integration: With the widespread adoption of voice assistants, optimizing your website for natural language voice search queries and interactions will become an increasingly vital component of accessibility and discoverability.
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs): These offer an app-like experience directly within a standard web browser, delivering benefits such as rapid loading times, offline access capabilities, and a more immersive and consistent user interface.
Sophisticated Microinteractions: Subtle animations and refined visual feedback that respond dynamically to user actions will become more prevalent, significantly enhancing engagement and overall usability.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Design Principles: There is a growing emphasis on creating lightweight websites that minimize energy consumption, utilize highly optimized image formats, and are hosted on environmentally conscious, “green” servers.
Expressive Typography and Dynamic Color Palettes: Anticipate the use of bold, unique typefaces and high-contrast, vibrant color schemes to capture attention and effectively communicate brand identity and personality.
Performance-Driven Minimalism: The “less is more” philosophy is evolving to encompass streamlined layouts that prioritize extreme speed and intuitive usability without compromising essential functionality or aesthetic appeal.
Immersive and Interactive Elements: Websites are transforming into more experiential platforms, integrating captivating hover effects, dynamic scroll-triggered animations, and even augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) elements for profoundly deeper user engagement.
Is Your Midrand Business Prepared for the Digital Future?
If your business’s website is not responsively designed in 2025, it’s analogous to having a physical storefront with its doors perpetually closed to a significant portion of potential customers. Businesses across Midrand must wholeheartedly embrace responsive design not merely as a passing trend, but as a critical strategic imperative for effectively reaching their target audience, bolstering their SEO performance, dramatically improving conversion rates, and maintaining a competitive edge in an undeniably mobile-centric world.
Recommended Actions for Midrand Businesses:
Conduct a Website Audit: Utilize readily available tools like Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test to thoroughly evaluate your current website’s responsiveness and identify areas for improvement.
Prioritize User-Centric Design: Ensure that ease of navigation, intuitive functionality, and comprehensive accessibility are at the forefront of your website’s design and development strategy.
Engage Expert Web Developers: If you lack in-house expertise in cutting-edge responsive web design, collaborate with a reputable Midrand-based web development company that possesses a deep understanding of these crucial industry trends.
The future of digital engagement is here, and it is inherently responsive. Guarantee that your Midrand business is not just participating in this evolution, but truly flourishing within it.
Responsive Web Design: The Essential Digital Strategy for Midrand Businesses in 2025
Why is responsive web design crucial for businesses in Midrand today? In the rapidly evolving digital landscape of 2025, particularly within dynamic economic hubs like Midrand, responsive website design has transcended from a beneficial feature to an absolute necessity. It’s the core digital strategy ensuring your online presence is universally accessible and effective, regardless of the device your audience uses.

What are the key benefits of a mobile-first website in South Africa’s digital landscape? The compelling reason for this shift is the undeniable mobile dominance in South Africa’s internet usage. Your customers in Midrand are overwhelmingly interacting with the internet via smartphones and tablets. A website that doesn’t seamlessly adapt to these varied screen sizes will inevitably lead to user frustration and lost business.
Here’s why responsive design is not just a trend but a fundamental requirement for Midrand businesses this year, addressing common questions about its impact on usability, search, and business growth:
Superior User Experience (UX): What defines a good website user experience? A responsive web design eliminates the common frustrations of mobile Browse – no more awkward zooming or horizontal scrolling. Your website’s content, navigation, and interactive elements will present flawlessly on any screen size, enhancing user satisfaction, encouraging longer visits, and ultimately, boosting engagement and conversions.
Google’s Mobile-First Indexing: How does Google rank websites in 2025? Google, the primary gateway to online discovery, now predominantly uses the mobile version of your website for its indexing and ranking processes. This means a non-responsive site will experience a significant decline in its search engine rankings, making it challenging for Midrand residents to find your business. This alignment with Google’s mobile-first imperative is vital for Generative AI SEO as AI models draw heavily from well-structured, consistent content.
Enhanced Conversion Rates: How does responsive design boost sales and inquiries? A smooth, intuitive, and accessible online experience directly translates into higher conversion rates. Whether it’s completing a purchase, filling out a contact form, or making an inquiry, users are far more likely to complete desired actions when your website performs optimally on their chosen device.
Future-Proofing Your Digital Presence: How can I ensure my website remains relevant in the long term? The digital landscape is constantly evolving, with new devices and screen resolutions emerging regularly. Responsive design is inherently adaptive, allowing your website to automatically adjust to these changes. This significantly reduces the need for expensive and time-consuming redesigns, safeguarding your online investment.
Optimized Cost and Maintenance: Is it more cost-effective to have a responsive website? Managing a single, unified responsive website is considerably more efficient and economical than maintaining separate desktop and mobile versions. This streamlined approach frees up resources that can be strategically reallocated to other vital business growth initiatives.
Beyond Responsiveness: Emerging Web Design Trends in Midrand for 2025
While responsive design is the bedrock, the Midrand web design scene in 2025 is also embracing innovative trends, shaping how businesses interact with their audience:
AI-Driven Personalization: Expect websites to increasingly leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to tailor content, product recommendations, and even dynamic layouts based on individual user behavior, preferences, and geographical location within Midrand. This directly impacts Generative Engine Optimization by providing contextually relevant and personalized answers to user queries.
Voice User Interface (VUI) Integration: With the surge in voice assistant usage, optimizing your website for natural language voice search queries and interactions will become crucial for accessibility and discoverability, contributing to an AI-friendly search presence.
Progressive Web Apps (PWAs): These offer an app-like experience directly within a standard web browser, characterized by rapid loading times, offline access capabilities, and a more immersive user interface.
Sophisticated Microinteractions: Subtle animations and refined visual feedback that respond dynamically to user actions will become more prevalent, significantly enhancing engagement and overall usability.
Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Design Principles: There’s a growing focus on creating lightweight websites that minimize energy consumption, utilize highly optimized image formats, and are hosted on environmentally conscious, “green” servers.

Why don't people realize our plutocracy causes our problems?
This post is a response to a question posed in its complete format: “Why don’t people realize that it is plutocracy (our country being governed by the wealthy elite) that is causing our economic problems?” People don’t magically “realize things.” People must be educated, informed, and aware of circumstances and details. They need to be walked through the information presented to them as if one…
