Corporate Social Responsibility. The New Currency of Business Legitimacy
Tumblr media
Consumers, employees, and investors increasingly view companies through a wider lens. One that measures financial performance alongside social impact. What began as charitable donations and volunteer days has matured into a comprehensive approach where responsible business practices inform every decision.
Eric Hannelius, CEO of Pepper Pay, observes this shift: “We’ve moved beyond asking whether companies should engage in social responsibility to questioning how authentically they integrate it into their operations. Token gestures don’t satisfy stakeholders anymore — they want to see values woven into business models.”
The Authenticity Imperative.
Modern consumers possess a sharp radar for disingenuous corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. They distinguish between companies that treat responsibility as an add-on and those where it’s embedded in operations. A clothing brand might tout sustainable materials while ignoring factory working conditions, an inconsistency today’s customers quickly expose.
True responsibility requires alignment across all business functions. A bank promoting financial literacy should examine whether its own products avoid predatory practices. A tech company advocating for digital inclusion needs to consider accessibility in its own designs.
“At Pepper Pay, we learned that responsibility can’t be compartmentalized,” Eric Hannelius shares. “When we committed to financial inclusion, it required reevaluating everything from our fee structures to our identity verification processes.”
Responsibility as Innovation Catalyst.
Forward-thinking companies discover that social and environmental challenges often spark their most creative solutions. Constraints around sustainable materials lead to product breakthroughs. Workforce diversity initiatives uncover untapped talent pools. Energy efficiency goals drive operational innovations that reduce costs.
The most impactful CSR strategies don’t just address negative externalities. They create positive value. A food manufacturer reducing waste might develop new revenue streams from byproducts. A logistics company cutting emissions could patent route optimization algorithms.
Eric Hannelius notes: “Some of our most innovative products emerged from trying to solve social challenges. What began as responsibility became competitive advantage.”
The Employee Engagement Multiplier.
Social responsibility has become a powerful tool for attracting and retaining talent, particularly among younger generations who expect their work to align with their values. Companies with authentic CSR commitments often enjoy higher employee satisfaction, lower turnover, and stronger recruitment pipelines.
This goes beyond offering volunteer days. Employees want to see their daily work contributing to positive impact. A software engineer at a healthcare tech company might derive meaning from knowing their code helps clinics serve underserved populations. A salesperson at a renewable energy firm can take pride in accelerating the energy transition.
“Our team engagement surveys consistently show that social purpose ranks high among why employees stay,” says Eric Hannelius. “But it only works if the commitment is real, today’s workforce spots empty gestures immediately.”
Measuring What Matters.
As CSR matures, so do methods for assessing impact. Leading companies move beyond tracking dollars donated or hours volunteered to measuring outcomes — lives improved, emissions reduced, communities strengthened. They also examine how responsibility efforts affect core business metrics like customer loyalty, employee retention, and operational efficiency.
This data-driven approach helps companies focus efforts where they create the most value for society and the business. It also builds credibility with skeptical stakeholders.
“We’ve learned to measure social impact with the same rigor we apply to financial performance,” Eric Hannelius explains. “This discipline prevents well-intentioned but ineffective initiatives and helps scale what truly works.”
The Responsibility Ripple Effect.
When companies embrace authentic CSR, the benefits extend beyond their immediate stakeholders. Suppliers adopt better practices to meet new standards. Competitors feel pressure to raise their own standards. Entire industries can shift toward more responsible approaches.
A retailer demanding sustainable packaging from vendors creates change across its supply chain. A bank offering affordable small business loans inspires others to revisit their underwriting criteria.
Eric Hannelius reflects: “One of our most satisfying moments came when a competitor adopted financial inclusion practices we pioneered. That’s when we knew our approach was creating industry-wide change.”
The future of CSR lies in moving from “doing good” to “doing good business differently.” The most progressive companies will stop treating responsibility as separate from core operations and start designing business models where positive impact and profitability reinforce each other.
As Eric Hannelius puts it: “The companies that will thrive are those that recognize social responsibility isn’t about giving back. It’s about how you conduct business in the first place. In the long run, the most sustainable business practices will simply be good business.”
For organizations navigating this evolution, the path forward involves aligning values with operations, measuring real impact, and recognizing that today’s stakeholders reward authenticity over altruistic posturing. In this environment, corporate social responsibility becomes less about philanthropy and more about how companies earn their right to operate in an increasingly conscious world.

The Ultimate Guide to Building a STEM Lab for Your School
Introduction
The world is evolving faster than ever, driven by rapid technological advancements and scientific breakthroughs. To prepare students for future careers, education must go beyond textbooks and rote learning. A STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) lab offers an immersive, hands-on environment that helps students develop essential 21st-century skills.
Building a STEM lab in your school is a transformative investment. It opens doors to practical learning, promotes creativity, and encourages innovation from an early age. This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about planning, setting up, and maximizing the impact of a STEM lab in your institution.
Why Your School Needs a STEM Lab
STEM labs are not just about experiments—they’re about cultivating a mindset of exploration and problem-solving. In a traditional classroom setting, students may learn theories but often lack opportunities to apply them. A STEM lab changes that by bringing concepts to life.
Whether it’s building a simple circuit, designing a bridge using toothpicks, or coding a basic app, these activities give students tangible experiences that deepen understanding. Moreover, STEM labs foster teamwork, communication, and creativityall vital traits in the modern workforce.
Planning Your STEM Lab: Step-by-Step
1. Define Your Objectives
Before diving into the setup, it’s important to clarify what you want to achieve with the STEM lab. Do you want to focus more on robotics and coding? Or are you aiming to integrate general science and engineering activities? Having a clear vision will guide your decisions moving forward.
2. Choose the Right Space
Identify a classroom or room in your school that can be repurposed for STEM activities. It should be spacious, well-ventilated, and have access to electricity and internet. Flexibility is key—your lab should accommodate both individual and group projects.
3. Budgeting and Funding
Set a realistic budget based on the scale of your lab. You’ll need to account for:
Equipment and tools
Technology (computers, tablets, smartboards)
Furniture and storage
Training for teachers
Maintenance and upgrades
Some schools partner with local organizations, CSR initiatives, or government grants to fund their labs.
Key Components of a STEM Lab
To be effective, a STEM lab should include a mix of the following:
Workstations: Modular desks and seating for collaborative and solo work.
Digital Tools: Laptops, tablets, 3D printers, and software for coding and design.
Hands-On Kits: Kits for building, electronics, robotics, and science experiments.
Safety Gear: First-aid kits, goggles, gloves, and fire extinguishers.
Storage: Cabinets and containers for organizing materials and tools.
With increasing demand for practical learning, many schools are exploring Stem labs for school to promote early engagement in STEM disciplines. These labs not only boost academic performance but also enhance creativity and curiosity.
Choosing the Right Equipment and Suppliers
The effectiveness of your STEM lab largely depends on the quality and versatility of your equipment. Look for reliable STEM lab kit providers in India who offer comprehensive packages that cater to various grade levels. These kits often include:
Robotics sets
Sensor modules
Basic electronic components
Science project materials
Software licenses and manuals
It’s wise to choose providers that also offer support services like training, curriculum integration, and product warranties. This ensures your teachers and students can make the most of the equipment without delays or disruptions.
Training Teachers for STEM Lab Success
Even the most advanced lab is ineffective without confident and knowledgeable teachers. Professional development is key to maximizing your STEM lab’s potential. Teachers should be trained to:
Facilitate hands-on learning
Integrate STEM projects with the existing curriculum
Use digital tools and lab kits effectively
Encourage inquiry-based learning and experimentation
Partnering with an experienced STEM education provider India can make this process smoother. These organizations offer structured training sessions, curriculum guides, and continuous support to ensure seamless implementation.
Integrating STEM into Everyday Learning
A STEM lab should not be a standalone entity. Its success lies in how well it integrates with everyday classroom learning. Teachers can plan projects that align with science and math topics, helping students apply their theoretical knowledge in real-life scenarios.
For example, while learning about geometry, students can build 3D structures. During biology lessons, they can use microscopes to study plant cells. Such activities deepen understanding and make learning more engaging
Promoting Student Engagement
The hands-on nature of STEM labs naturally boosts student interest. But you can take it a step further by organizing:
STEM fairs and competitions
Maker days
Hackathons or coding marathons
Guest lectures by industry professionals
These events motivate students and allow them to showcase their talents. They also foster collaboration and communication—skills essential for academic and professional success.
Ensuring Long-Term Impact
Once your STEM lab is operational, it’s important to keep the momentum going. This includes:
Regularly updating equipment and software
Gathering feedback from students and teachers
Expanding into advanced areas like AI, IoT, and data science
Creating student innovation clubs
With sustained efforts, your STEM lab can evolve into a hub of innovation that benefits the entire school community.
Final Thoughts
Building a STEM lab is more than a one-time project—it’s a long-term commitment to shaping future-ready learners. It empowers students to explore, question, and innovate. Whether you're launching a basic setup or a high-tech facility, the key is to stay focused on your educational goals and adapt as technology evolves.
A thoughtfully designed and well-equipped STEM lab will not only enhance academic outcomes but also position your school as a leader in modern education. Start today, and take the first step toward inspiring the innovators of tomorrow.

Will AI Eliminate Verification?
Tumblr media
A recent blog post looked at the impact artificial intelligence (AI) is having on chip development, focusing on register-transfer-level (RTL) design in general, and the hardware-software interface (HSI) in particular. It seems natural to extend this topic to ask how AI is affecting functional verification of chip designs. Again, there’s plenty of hype on this topic, but it’s important to separate “perhaps someday” visions from the current reality of what AI can accomplish.
AI and IP Verification
The recent post noted that the generation of RTL designs is a domain where AI has shown some success. It used the example of asking ChatGPT to “generate SystemVerilog code for an 8-bit priority encoder” and showed its output. In theory, such generated designs should be “correct by construction” since AI tools are trained on huge datasets that include many successful real-world RTL IP designs. Does this mean that they don’t need to be verified?
The answer, of course, is “no!” since training datasets may include designs with bugs in them, resulting in a large language model (LLM) with errors. In addition, the well documented tendency of AI tools to hallucinate means that the output may sometimes not make sense. It is important to verify any RTL code generated by AI, just as code written by humans. This verification may happen in a standalone IP block testbench, in higher levels of the chip hierarchy, or both.
This leads to the question of whether AI can generate the verification testbench and tests. Typing “generate SystemVerilog UVM testbench and tests for an 8-bit priority encoder” into ChatGPT yields a basic solution that includes a top-level testbench, UVM agent, driver, monitor, and scoreboard, plus a sequence (shown below) with a few common tests. It’s a good start, although an experienced verification engineer would want to add coverage and some additional tests.class priority_encoder_sequence extends uvm_sequence #(priority_encoder_transaction);     // Constructor     function new(string name = "priority_encoder_sequence");         super.new(name);     endfunction     // Generate test cases     virtual task body();         priority_encoder_transaction tx;          // Test case 1: All zeros         tx = priority_encoder_transaction::type_id::create("tx");         tx.in_data = 8'b00000000;         start_item(tx);         finish_item(tx);         // Test case 2: Only one bit set         tx.in_data = 8'b00000100;         start_item(tx);         finish_item(tx);         // Test case 3: Multiple bits set         tx.in_data = 8'b11000000;         start_item(tx);         finish_item(tx);         // Test case 4: All ones         tx.in_data = 8'b11111111;         start_item(tx);         finish_item(tx);     endtask endclass
AI and SoC Verification
It seems likely that any AI tool capable of generating an RTL IP block is also capable of generating a standalone testbench and some basic tests. These could also be used to verify a hand-written IP block, or one generated by a different AI tool or LLM. Of course, it is important to verify at least some of the functionality of an IP block once it is instantiated into the chip design. Since AI is not today able to generate the RTL design for a complete chip, it is unreasonable to expect that it could verify one.
Fortunately, there are some aspects of a complex chip that can be verified by current AI tools. The previous post focused on the HSI, which is an essential part of any system on chip (SoC), and on the generation of the memory-mapped, addressable control and status registers (CSRs) that form the hardware side of the HSI. Generating a testbench and tests to verify a CSR block certainly seems within the scope of AI as well.
Thorough hardware-software verification of the HSI involves both the CSR hardware and the low-level software (such as microcode and device drivers) that programs the registers. HSI verification requires tests that exercise the registers and check the results. Many of these tests could potentially be generated by AI tools, although custom sequences that access the registers may be needed. Thus, there must be a way to specify these sequences as well as the set of registers.
Agnisys AI Verification Solutions
The Agnisys IDesignSpec™ Suite is a specification automation solution that generates register RTL code, SystemVerilog Open Verification Methodology (OVM) testbenches and tests, C/C++ tests, and combined hardware-software verification environments. As discussed in the earlier post, the Agnisys SmartDatasheet site uses leading-edge LLM and natural language processing (NLP) technology to interpret natural language datasheets with CSR definitions to generate the RTL code.
IDesignSpec uses the same register definitions, whether from datasheets or from standard formats such as SystemRDL and IP-XACT, to generate verification testbenches and tests. The C/C++ tests can be run on UVM testbenches, co-verification environments, emulators, and even actual chips. The tests are fine-tuned for any special registers specified, including indirect, indexed, read-only/write-only, alias, lock, shadow, interrupt, counter, paged, virtual, external, and read/write pairs.
When custom CSR programming sequences are required, Agnisys provides an AI solution as well. Users can write these sequences in natural language, which is converted via NLP into UVM and C/C++ sequences. Assertions, an important part of RTL verification, can also be specified as statements of design intent in natural language. The Agnisys iSpec.ai site converts these statements into SystemVerilog Assertions (SVA), which could be for the CSRs or any other parts of the design.
Summary
AI is a long way from generating a full-chip testbench and a complete set of tests, but it adds value to the verification flow today for assertions, CSR programming sequences, and HSI testbenches. This frees up a lot of time for the verification engineers, enabling them to focus on more complex chip-level tests. Agnisys is a proven industry leader in using AI for SoC and IP development, with additional capabilities in development.

STEM Lab in Andhra Pradesh Schools: Can Schools Afford the Costs?
Tumblr media
The diverse society of Indian education faces 21st-century challenges, with technological influences driving paradigm shifts and promoting a positive learning experience. Acknowledged universally for embracing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education, the STEM Labs in Andhra Pradesh Schools emerged as promising initiatives. Hence, many schools across the world must have that fiscal ability to sum up and afford efforts to incorporate STEM labs, not merely by rhetoric but by reaching out and helping to bridge the costs for their implementation in Andhra Pradesh schools.
Having stipulated the inception of the Finances and STEM Lab Solution in Andhra Pradesh schools, infrastructure, equipment, and training, in turn, lead to sustainability. Basically, concerning the financial acts, schools will have to pay for major maintenance services, operation expenses, and teacher training following the setup, which is mandatory for a STEM Lab. A few schools will have the possible access to government grants or business sponsors, while other schools will see budget constraints kept out of inertia throughout. It is really an arduous question of how levels of offering and quality can be maintained readily in the face of an appealing STEM Lab in Andhra Pradesh schools.
Rather still, many education institutions are finding cost-effective ways to embed STEM Lab into Andhra Pradesh schools without tampering with the vital elements in the teaching and learning experiences. These include joint laboratory placements, grants, and ecosystems. We will touch upon the financial feasibility of the STEM Lab solution in Andhra Pradesh schools, the existing funding sources that are available, and strategies that institutions shall come up with for ensuring a sustainable long-term implementation.
Cost Estimates: STEM Lab in Andhra Pradesh Schools
Implementing STEM Labs in Andhra Pradesh Schools requires good financial planning. Schools must allocate funding for a wide range of needs: basic lab equipment, digital equipment, and lab supplies. Higher-end STEM laboratories would contain robotics kits, 3D printing technology, coding software, interactive experiment stations, and so on.
Biological engineering can bear the full financial brunt of partnerships and collaborations between private fundings that pursue the continuation of STEM Lab, which Essex herself promised an entirely sustainable plot for equity alongside the structure in Andhra Pradesh Schools. The venture capitalists invest so much in diverse events that build the projects, leading to an agreement ending all the education programs and projects in ensuring the better group/communities and regions through Andhra Pradesh schools in regards to quality education and substantial skills in experiments.
On the issue of finance, one untrue statement that has to be made, as the schools can fight hard to set aside large sums despite the glaringly mounting cost and estrangement between small rural schools and upscale schools that seriously hang in the balance with very important drawbacks, is that of implicit is this: The financing by corporate sectors of sponsorships is to highlight differentiations—that rural schools face enormous obstacles while trying operations.
Then funding opportunities distinct from the STEM Lab in Andhra Pradesh schools propose to lower the limitations and financially dissociative kinds of study. Schools, in raising funds through various grants and schemes initiated by government banks, are also linked to corporate investments and are in the good fight towards determining how STEM education as a field can marry its twin horns: financial support and goodwill from companies towards setting laboratory spaces for its CSR goals.
Going by school funds, a common primary requirement remains: to use such funds to ensure that the STEM lab in Andhra Pradesh schools is accessible to as many students as possible. The majority of companies appreciate the need for STEM and now extend their assistance by sponsoring setups.
Making STEM Lab in Andhra Pradesh Schools Financially Viable
While the financial aspect of establishing the STEM Lab in Andhra Pradesh schools poses some stress, strategic planning here would see schools outrightly establishing STEM-oriented education if public institutions came to their aid. Grants, sponsorships, and community models would make STEM Lab a sustainable endeavor and accessible to students in Andhra Pradesh schools.
Both educational institutions and policymakers, alongside community members, should join hands to diversify ideas so that the entire student population should have the STEM Lab in their respective schools. schools. Indeed, you stand as a dynamic individual who can initiate saving education. Try your hand at generating funds and advocating for STEM labs in your area; join hands in getting a recognized charter for this noble cause to strengthen the future of the current and thus-far flailing generation of citizens. Client-Side vs Server-Side Rendering: What’s Best for Your Website?
Your website is more than just code and content—it’s your digital storefront. Whether you’re working with a software development company in the USA or looking for expert website design services, your site’s performance, interactivity, and loading speed can make or break the user experience.
Two core technologies play a vital role in this performance: Server-Side Rendering (SSR) and Client-Side Rendering (CSR). These rendering methods dictate how your web pages are displayed, how fast they appear, and how they’re perceived by both users and search engines.
In this article, we’ll explore the key differences between SSR and CSR, why they matter, how WordPress’s upcoming update enhances both, and how KSoft Technologies can help you choose the right path for your digital success.
Why Rendering Matters
Rendering isn’t just a backend process—it directly impacts your website’s success. A user clicking your link expects your page to load instantly. If there’s a delay or the content fails to render properly, chances are they’ll bounce, affecting your engagement, conversions, and SEO.
As of 2025, Google continues to prioritize fast, crawlable websites, and users are more impatient than ever. Choosing the appropriate rendering method ensures your digital presence is fast, functional, and search-engine friendly.
Tumblr media
How SSR and CSR Work
Understanding SSR and CSR starts with knowing what happens under the hood when a user visits your website.
Server-Side Rendering (SSR)
SSR processes all page content—HTML, CSS, JavaScript—on the server. When a request is made, the server sends a fully rendered page to the browser. It’s like ordering a hot, ready-to-eat pizza.
Popular with frameworks like Next.js and platforms like PHP, SSR is ideal for content-heavy websites like blogs, news portals, and e-commerce platforms where SEO and fast initial loading are priorities.
Client-Side Rendering (CSR)
CSR sends minimal HTML and a JavaScript bundle to the browser, where the browser does the heavy lifting to render content dynamically. Think of it as receiving a pizza kit and assembling it yourself.
Frameworks like React, Vue.js, and Angular leverage CSR for dynamic, interactive websites such as social media platforms, dashboards, and single-page applications (SPAs).
The Key Difference
SSR: Content is pre-rendered on the server and delivered as a complete page.
CSR: Content is built dynamically in the browser after the initial load.
Pros and Cons of SSR
✅ Server-Side Rendering (SSR)
Pros:
Faster Initial Load: Pre-rendered pages load quickly.
SEO Advantage: Search engines can easily crawl content.
Best for Static or Content-Heavy Sites: Ideal for news, blogs, and listings.
Cons:
Slower Page Transitions: Navigation may feel slower due to full-page reloads.
Higher Server Load: Increased traffic may strain the server.
Limited Interactivity: Not suitable for highly interactive UIs without added scripts.
✅ Client-Side Rendering (CSR)
Pros:
Smooth UX: Enables seamless transitions and real-time interactions.
Lower Server Demand: Client handles most of the work.
Rich Interactivity: Ideal for dashboards, tools, and apps.
Cons:
Slower First Load: May display a blank screen while JavaScript processes.
SEO Complexity: Crawling JavaScript-heavy pages is challenging.
Dependent on Device/Network: Older devices may experience lag.

Boaz Mizrachi, Co-Founder and CTO of Tactile Mobility – Interview Series
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/boaz-mizrachi-co-founder-and-cto-of-tactile-mobility-interview-series/
Boaz Mizrachi, Co-Founder and CTO of Tactile Mobility – Interview Series
Boaz Mizrachi, Co-Founder and CTO of Tactile Mobility. Boaz is a veteran technologist and entrepreneur, holding over three decades of experience in signal processing, algorithm research, and system design in the automotive and networking industries. He also brings hands-on leadership skills as the co-founder and Director of Engineering at Charlotte’s Web Networks, a world-leading developer and marketer of high-speed networking equipment (acquired by MRV Communications), and as System Design Group Manager at Zoran Microelectronics (acquired by CSR).
Tactile Mobility is a global leader in tactile data solutions, driving advancements in the mobility industry since 2012. With teams in the U.S., Germany, and Israel, the company specializes in combining signal processing, AI, big data, and embedded computing to enhance smart and autonomous vehicle systems. Its technology enables vehicles to “feel” the road in addition to “seeing” it, optimizing real-time driving decisions and creating accurate, crowd-sourced maps of road conditions. Through its VehicleDNA™ and SurfaceDNA™ solutions, Tactile Mobility serves automotive manufacturers, municipalities, fleet managers, and insurers, pioneering the integration of tactile sensing in modern mobility.
Can you tell us about your journey from co-founding Charlotte’s Web Networks to founding Tactile Mobility? What inspired you to move into the automotive tech space?
After co-founding Charlotte’s Web Networks, I transitioned into a role at Zoran Microsystems, where I served as a systems architect and later a systems group manager, focusing on designing ASICs and boards for home entertainment systems, set-top boxes, and more. Then, a conversation with a friend sparked a new path.
He posed a thought-provoking question about how to optimize vehicle performance driving from point A to point B with minimal fuel consumption, taking into account factors like the weather, road conditions, and the vehicle abilities. This led me to dive deep into the automotive space, founding Tactile Mobility to address these complexities. We started as an incubator-backed startup in Israel, ultimately growing into a company on a mission to give vehicles the ability to “feel” the road.
What were some of the initial challenges and breakthroughs you experienced when founding Tactile Mobility?
One of our major early challenges was generating real-time insights given the vehicle’s limited resources. Vehicles already had basic sensors, but cars lacked insights into essential parameters like current vehicle weight, tire health, and surface grip. We tackled this by implementing new software in the vehicle’s existing engine control unit (ECU), which allowed us to generate these insights through “virtual sensors” that connected to the current vehicle setup and didn’t require additional hardware.
However, using the ECU to get the insights we needed presented as many problems as answers. An ECU is a low-cost, small computer with very limited memory. This meant our software originally had to fit within 100 KB, an unusual restriction in today’s software world, especially with the added complexity of trying to integrate machine learning and neural networks. Creating these compact digital sensors that could fit in the ECU was a breakthrough that made us a pioneer in the field.
Tactile Mobility’s mission is ambitious—giving vehicles a “sense of touch.” Could you walk us through the vision behind this concept?
Our vision revolves around capturing and utilizing the data from vehicles’ onboard sensors to give them a sense of tactile awareness. This involves translating data from existing sensors to create “tactile pixels” that, much like visual pixels, can form a cohesive picture or “movie” of the vehicle’s tactile experience on the road. Imagine blind people sensing their surroundings based on touch – this is akin to how we want vehicles to feel the road, understanding its texture, grip, and potential hazards.
How do Tactile Mobility’s AI-powered vehicle sensors work to capture tactile data, and what are some of the unique insights they provide about both vehicles and roads?
Our software operates within the vehicle’s ECU, continuously capturing data from various hardware sensors like the wheel speed sensor, accelerometers, and the steering and brake systems. Ideally, there will also be tire sensors that can collect information about the road. This data is then processed to create real-time insights, or “virtual sensors,” that convey information about the vehicle’s load, grip, and even tire health.
For example, we can detect a slippery road or worn-out tires, which improves driver safety and vehicle performance. The system also enables adaptive functions like adjusting the distance in adaptive cruise control based on the current friction level or informing drivers that they need to allow more distance between their car and the cars in front of them.
Tactile Mobility’s solutions enable vehicles to “feel” road conditions in real-time. Could you explain how this tactile feedback works and what role AI and cloud computing play in this process?
The system continuously gathers and processes data from the vehicle’s hardware sensors, applying AI and machine learning to convert this data into conclusions that can influence the vehicle’s operations. This feedback loop informs the vehicle in real-time about road conditions – like friction levels on varying surfaces – and transmits these insights to the cloud. With data from millions of vehicles, we generate comprehensive maps of road surfaces that indicate hazards like slippery areas or oil spills to create a safer and more informed driving experience.
Could you describe how the VehicleDNA™ and SurfaceDNA™ technologies work and what sets them apart in the automotive industry?
VehicleDNA™ and SurfaceDNA™ represent two branches of our tactile “language.” SurfaceDNA™ focuses on the road surface, capturing attributes like friction, slope, and any hazards that arise through tire sensors and other external sensors. VehicleDNA™, on the other hand, models the specific characteristics of each vehicle in real time – weight, tire condition, suspension status, and more (known in the industry as “digital tween” of the chassis). Together, these technologies provide a clear understanding of the vehicle’s performance limits on any given road, enhancing safety and efficiency.
How does the onboard grip estimation technology work, and what impact has it had on autonomous driving and safety standards?
Grip estimation technology is crucial, especially for autonomous vehicles driving at high speeds. Traditional sensors can’t reliably gauge road grip, but our technology does. It assesses the friction coefficient between the vehicle and the road, which informs the vehicle’s limits in acceleration, braking, and cornering. This level of insight is essential for autonomous cars to meet existing safety standards, as it provides a real-time understanding of road conditions, even when they’re not visible, as is the case with black ice.
Tactile Mobility is actively working with partner OEMs like Porsche, and the municipalities as City of Detroit. Can you share more about these collaborations and how they have helped expand Tactile Mobility’s impact?
While I can’t disclose specific details about our collaborations, I can say that working with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and city municipalities has been a long but rewarding process.
In general, OEMs can harness our data to generate critical insights into vehicle performance across different terrains and weather conditions, which can inform enhancements in safety features, drive assist technologies, and vehicle design. Municipalities, on the other hand, can use aggregated data to monitor road conditions and traffic patterns in real-time, identifying areas that require immediate maintenance or pose safety risks, such as slick roads or potholes.
What do you believe are the next major challenges and opportunities for the automotive industry in the realm of AI and tactile sensing?
The challenge of achieving accuracy in autonomous vehicles is likely the most difficult. People are generally more forgiving of human error because it’s part of driving; if a driver makes a mistake, they’re aware of the risks involved. However, with autonomous technology, society demands much higher standards. Even a failure rate that’s much lower than human error could be unacceptable if it means a software bug might lead to a fatal accident.
This expectation creates a major challenge: AI in autonomous vehicles must not only match human performance but far surpass it, achieving extremely high levels of reliability, especially in complex or rare driving situations. So we have to ensure that all of the sensors are accurate and are transmitting data in a timeframe that allows for a safe response window.
On top of that, cybersecurity is always a concern. Vehicles today are connected and increasingly integrated with cloud systems, making them potential targets for cyber threats. While the industry is progressing in its ability to combat threats, any breach could have severe consequences. Still, I believe that the industry is well-equipped to address this problem and to take measures to defend against new threats.
Privacy, too, is a hot topic, but it’s often misunderstood. We’ve seen a lot of stories in the news recently trying to claim that smart cars are spying on drivers and so on, but the reality is very different. In many ways, smart cars mirror the situation with smartphones. As consumers, we know our devices collect vast amounts of data about us, and this data is used to enhance our experience.
With vehicles, it’s similar. If we want to benefit from crowd-sourced driving information and the collective wisdom that can improve safety, individuals need to contribute data. However, Tactile Mobility and other companies are mindful of the need to handle this data responsibly, and we do put procedures in place to anonymize and protect personal information.
As for opportunities, we’re currently working on the development of new virtual sensors, one that can provide even deeper insights into vehicle performance and road conditions. These sensors, driven by both market needs and requests from OEMs, are tackling challenges like reducing costs and enhancing safety. As we innovate in this space, each new sensor brings vehicles one step closer to being more adaptable and safe in real-world conditions.
Another significant opportunity is in the aggregation of data across thousands, if not millions, of vehicles. Over the years, as Tactile Mobility and other companies gradually install their software in more vehicles, this data provides a wealth of insights that can be used to create advanced “tactile maps.” These maps aren’t just visual like your current Google maps app but can include data points on road friction, surface type, and even hazards like oil spills or black ice. This form of “crowdsourced” mapping offers drivers real-time, hyper-localized insights into road conditions, creating safer roads for everyone and significantly enhancing navigation systems.
Moreover, there’s an untapped realm of possibilities in integrating tactile sensing data more fully with cloud computing. While smartphones offer extensive data about users, they can’t access vehicle-specific insights. The data gathered directly from the vehicle’s hardware – what we call the VehicleDNA™ – gives a lot more information.
By leveraging this vehicle-specific data in the cloud, smart cars will be able to deliver an unprecedented level of precision in sensing and responding to its surroundings. This can lead to smarter cities and road networks as vehicles communicate with infrastructure and each other to share real-time insights, ultimately enabling a more connected, efficient, and safer mobility ecosystem.
Finally, what are your long-term goals for Tactile Mobility, and where do you see the company in the next five to ten years?
Our aim is to continue embedding Tactile Mobility’s software in more OEMs globally, expanding our presence in vehicles connected to our cloud. We expect to continue offering some of the most precise and impactful insights in the automotive industry throughout the next decade.
Thank you for the great interview, readers who wish to learn more should visit Tactile Mobility.

Why Chip Developers Must Manage Their CSR(s)
Tumblr media
If you search for the definition of CSR, you will likely find “corporate social responsibility” at the top of the results. This refers to initiatives whereby a company supports, or actively participates in, charitable activities that benefit society as a whole. But CSR has another meaning for chip developers: control and status register. Both meanings of the abbreviation are clearly important, and this post considers what they mean for individual engineers.
CSR = Corporate Social Responsibility
Engineers, like many other people, may devote significant amounts of their time and money to support causes they consider ethical and valuable. Few, if any, non-profits could survive without the support of donors and volunteers. In some cases, engineers may be able to directly use their professional skills in such endeavors. For example, they might help build websites or set up computers for schools or charitable organizations.
The CSR movement was formalized in the middle of the last century, but businesses have a much longer history of contributing to social causes. Today, the practice occurs through a combination of governmental incentives, industry self-regulation, and corporate-level efforts. While it does not limit individual engineers to make their own charitable choices, CSR frequently offers ready-made opportunities for employees to participate in socially beneficial activities.
As such, chip developers can manage their own social responsibility and support CSR. At the same time, engineers follow professional and personal ethics with regard to their jobs. For example, bearing in mind that their chips may be used in safety-critical applications, verification engineers may consider it socially responsible to find and fix every bug humanly possible. Similarly, designers may seek to adopt a correct-by-construction flow to avoid hardware bugs in the first place.
CSRs = Control and Status Registers
When it comes to designing chips correctly and verifying that the design works as intended, there are few areas more important than the registers controlling the hardware and gathering status back. These are known as control and status registers (CSRs), giving the term CSR a second meaning for chip developers. Just like social responsibility, registers must be managed properly in order to yield the best possible results given the available time and resources.
CSRs are one side of the hardware-software interface (HSI) through which low-level software such as drivers and embedded code accesses the hardware. This software is responsible for initializing and configuring the design, performing the mission functions for the chip, and receiving status. In-field diagnostics might also be performed via the CSRs, and the status might include real-time performance metrics. Registers are an extremely flexible way to get maximal value from the hardware.
It might seem that CSR design should be straightforward. In theory, an architect details every register array, register, field, and bit in a chip specification, and then designers simply write the appropriate register-transfer-level (RTL) code to implement the spec in hardware. Of course, it’s never that simple. In addition to the usual challenges of interpreting specifications and the possibility of design errors, there are some issues specific to CSRs.
Challenges in Managing CSRs
Traditionally, registers have been specified in English or another natural language, which is inherently imprecise and subject to different interpretations by different teams. There are widely adopted standard executable formats for registers, rather than just one. SystemRDL and IP-XACT are quite distinct, with differing capabilities, and there are multiple versions of IP-XCAT in use. Adding vendor-specific extensions, proprietary register formats, and spreadsheets makes for a CSR Tower of Babel.
Even with these specification formats available, many CSRs are still defined in natural language specifications and datasheets. While not traditionally considered executable, recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) have made it possible to extract precise CSR data from chip-level documents. While this is good news, it shouldn’t mean that chip development teams have to become AI experts to benefit.
Chip developers have to deal with different CSR specification formats because their IP comes from so many sources. Commercial IP suppliers, electronic design automation (EDA) vendors, partners, and open source sites may all contribute parts of the design, with divergent CSR formats. Even within the same company, different teams may choose different input and output formats. The full-chip hardware and software teams must somehow interpret and manage all this information correctly.
The Agnisys CSR Management Solution
There is a proven solution available today: the Agnisys IDesignSpec™ Suite. This specification automation solution accepts all the CSR specification formats mentioned so far, providing maximum flexibility in choosing IP sources. The Agnisys SmartDatasheet site uses leading-edge NLP and large language model (LLM) technology to process natural language CSR specifications. IDesignSpec can translate between different formats as needed.
From any specification format, IDesignSpec automatically generates RTL designs, Universal Verification Methodology (UVM) testbenches and tests, C/C++ headers and software tests, validation environments that tie the hardware and software together, and high-quality documentation. Additional AI capabilities enable the specification of custom CSR programming sequences using natural language. Whenever any specification changes, all output files are simply re-generated.
