How to Build a Small Solar Power System - Low-tech Magazine
Readers have told me they like to build small-scale photovoltaic installations like those that power Low-tech Magazine’s website and office. However, they don’t know where to start and what components to buy. This guide brings all the information together: what you need, how to wire everything, what your design choices are, where to put solar panels, how to fix them in place (or not), how to split power and install measuring instruments. It deals with solar energy systems that charge batteries and simpler configurations that provide direct solar power. Conventional solar PV installations are installed on a rooftop or in a field. They convert the low voltage direct current (DC) power produced by solar panels into high voltage alternate (AC) power for use by main appliances and rely on the power grid during the night and in bad weather. None of this holds for the small-scale systems we build in this manual. They are completely independent of the power grid, run entirely on low voltage power, and are not powering a whole household or city but rather a room, a collection of devices, or a specific device. Small-scale solar is decentralized power production taken to its extremes. Most of the work in building a small-scale solar system is deciding the size of the components and the building of the supporting structure for the solar panel. Wiring is pretty straightforward unless you want a sophisticated control panel. You only need a limited set of tools: a wire stripper, some screwdrivers (including small ones), and a wood saw are the only essentials. A soldering iron, pliers, and a multimeter are handy, but you can do without them.

Writing advice from a good sci fi author.
Some science fiction/fantasy creative writing students I have encountered, a field guide
1. World-Savers: these are generally older students, have no real interest in SF/F, are writing a book to express political or metaphysical ideas they consider to be radical and necessary for the future of life on Earth. In reality, they're writing long Platonic dialogues about their ideas, and authority from various culture and pop culture tropes (aliens, noble savages, fairies, resurrected presidents)–to the extent that their work has a plot at all, it involves a Christ figure transforming the world via a sacrifice. The ideas aren't very radical either: "pollute less" and "love your neighbor, unless they're a dick" are common. Occasionally the message for the world has to do with something more prosaic: reverse budgeting, the evils of Affirmative Action, the importance of installing solar panels, how dare Eileen divorce me and fuck like three guys in the six months after she moved out, etc. These students are utterly confused by actually existing SF/F stories they read, and often interpret them in bizarrely sexual ways. They don't believe in numbering the pages of their manuscripts, and often attempt to submit work in PDF so it won't be stolen.
2. Children with Money: recent college grads, or drop-outs, these people have read Harry Potter, Twilight, and perhaps three or four other best-selling young adult series and nothing else. They are easily upset, especially when someone suggests reading more. Their main interests are YouTube personalities, video games, and a sort of Puritanical pansexuality that actually makes smut boring. They often "forget" to read the work of other students, and have no idea how to use a printer. They warn the other students that their story might be "too intense" because it contains, for example, a depiction of a car accident. Their stories are routinely awful, and always contain a character named "Aidan." Sometimes their parents come to class to make sure I am "not a serial killer", as though they could possibly tell from looking at me. (Oh, "Mamatas" IS a white person name...I guess?)
3. Anointed Ones: They contact me, or the people running the workshop, beforehand, to make sure that "the class is right" for them. They have file cabinets full of their stuff, and after many decades of toil, they are ready to reveal their work to the world. They just need a mentor, and an ally—could I be the one they've been searching for lo these many years? Prior workshops were full of callow teachers and jealous students. Why they were only allowed to submit ten pages a week! Some of them have actually read fairly widely, but you wouldn't know it from their work: three adjectives per noun, a fetish for speech tags other than the word "said" or no tags at all. Often these stories include as characters philosophical prostitutes with very sensitive nipples. They never miss a class and often show up more than thirty minutes early. One time, I had to hide in a closet to avoid an extensive pre-class conversation with one.
4. Frightened Proles: These have read Stephen King and Dean Koontz and sometimes even horror writers from this century. They generally have working-class jobs and write about working people who encounter the supernatural on the late shift. They really hope they can sell their novel soon, but they know it'll take a lot of work. (Ten more drafts oughta do it!) They wear baseball hats to class and look like enormous eight-year-olds. They get very excited when I mention professional wrestling or do a taiji move in class. Their significant others are often nameless—"my girlfriend" "my wife." They buy my books and bring them to class for autographs. Some of them get published after, especially flash fiction.
5. Repairables: decent writers, often involved in the SFF "scene", who need to be fixed after a bad experience with Clarion or another workshop or an overeager editor at a semipro magazine who told them some idiot nonsense they decided to believe because they were told it was "unprofessional" not to consider editorial feedback. These either get published...or lost to MFA programs, video game jobs, fandom, podcasts, or other writing-shaped pursuits. Most of them are ferocious name-droppers; the ones who heard of me beforehand know to keep quiet though.

Anatomy of a Dalek
A Dalek is primarily made from Dalekanium and polycarbide and is technically a cyborg. To understand how a Dalek is created, see How Do Daleks Become Daleks?
Some Daleks will have variations on the below, but these aspects of a Dalek's anatomy are broadly applicable to most.
The Dome (aka dome section, head section, head dome) is attached to the neck via a docking clamp.
Eyestalk (aka eyepiece, eye antenna, tele-eye, eye-stick, optical stalk, sensory antenna, eyeball unit). The eyestalk is attached to the dome via a lens attachment, sitting on a pivot in a cowl. The eye itself is known as an eyelens. The eyestalk is covered in multiple insulator discs to protect it from radiation.
Luminosity dischargers (aka headlamp, radiation valve, dome light, vocaliser light, sound disc). It's not quite known how or why the luminosity dischargers sync up with Dalek speech, but they could be energy compensators, translation units, safety valves to release excess energy, or just lights to indicate when a Dalek's speaking.
Neck (aka grating section, upper grating section). Attached to the weapons platform via another docking clamp, or 'catch'.
Neck rings support the neck grille.
Neck grille (aka audio receptor grill, sensor grille, sensor mesh, sensor grid louvres) cover the mutant Dalek within.
Weapons Platform (aka shoulder platform, shoulder section).
Slats (aka solar power collection slats, solar slats, solar cells, shoulder slats, armour slats, sensor plates) are effectively solar panels that absorb energy to power the Dalek.
Gunstick (aka radiation gun, gun-rod, ray-gun, exterminator, blast-gun, energy gun, Dalek neutraliser, neutraliser, beam distributor, Dalek beam gun, Dalek gun, ruby ray blaster). Sits on a balljoint, controlled by armament circuits. Can be set to non-lethal, causing temporary paralysis, but maximum settings can split atoms apart. Some Daleks deliberately reduce the power of their gunstick so that the beam burns away the central nervous system outside inwards, so victims die within 2-3 seconds in complete agony.
Manipulator arm (aka tactile arm, arm-stick). Usually sits on a balljoint. Attachments can be swapped out for various tools depending on the needs of the Dalek. Some attachments include the plunger, flamethrower, seismic detector, electrode unit, sieve, syringe, blow torch, cutting tool, another gunstick, or a claw, or basically anything they need.
Base Unit (aka travel unit). Contains the motive unit, the elevation unit, and thrusters.
Sense spheres (aka sensor globes, sensor arrays, bumps) can do pretty much whatever you want them to, including detecting emissions, monitoring the surrounding environment, and acting as self-destruct mechanisms. They can also function as sockets for cables and wires, and some say the sensor globes are capable of free flight, allowing them to provide remote battlefield intelligence.
Bumper (aka fender). Possibly containing proximal alert systems to detect other Daleks, but more likely just softening collisions.

GENUINE APOCALYPSE SURVIVAL GUIDE (pt 1/?)
Buy a generator.
Look around you, so much of our things use electricity. Trust me, you WOULD want a generator. It's a great short term solution while you get your solar panels sorted out.
Now, for the food issue.
Livestock I'm sure most of you have heard the saying "going at it like rabbits". Whoever invented that phrase wasn't wrong. Under ideal conditions, rabbit populations exponentially increase by 11.7% every day. Aka you get a lot of rabbits in a short time. While I'm not a gym bro, 26g of protein per 85g of meat seems pretty decent to me. Just put them in some enclosure with food and chill out.
Hydroponics (kratky method) Unlike rabbits, a human cannot sustain themselves on just grass, you'd have to try to grow your own food (unless you could survive off foraging). Hydroponics is where you grown plants in water. While easy, Hydroponics often relies on modern amenities such as premade fertilizer mix, which obviously will run out. Despite all that, Hydroponics would still be a soild temporary solution until you find out a way to grow more food.

NAS1831C4C56: The Little Fastener That Anchors Stars
A Meeting in the Circuit Desert
When I first landed on this planet of clinking tools and humming machines, I thought all fasteners were like the flashy ones I’d seen—loud, polished, and a little too proud of their shine. But then I met the NAS1831C4C56—a 1/4-inch spacer, sitting quietly on a workbench like a single cactus in the desert.
“You’re… small,” I said, tilting my head. “And you’re a child who talks to fasteners,” it replied, its hexagonal body glinting softly. “But size isn’t what matters. Ask the fox.”
Tumblr media
1. The Secret of Its Desert Bloom
This isn’t just metal—it’s desert magic. Let me tell you its story:
Material: 303 stainless steel, tough as the baobab roots on my home planet. It laughs at corrosion, just like the cactus laughs at sandstorms.
Size: 1/4" hex, 0.56" long—small enough to fit in a pocket, but strong enough to hold a satellite.
Certifications: MIL-STD-45622, RoHS, ISO 9001. Think of them as the “star maps” that guide it—proving it’s reliable, even in the darkest corners of space.
Fun Fact: Engineers call it the “Swiss Army knife of fasteners.” They steal it from factory floors like children steal stars—because once you find one, you never let go.
2. The Cactus of Extreme Climates
On the planet of factories, where machines roar like angry volcanoes and chemicals spill like poison water, the NAS1831C4C56 thrives.
“Why not plastic?” I asked a welding robot. “Plastic cries when sparks land. This one? It hums.”
It survives -40°C (colder than the desert at night) and 125°C (hotter than the sun at noon). It shrugs off oil, acid, and even the “accidental” hammers of interns.
“You’re unkillable,” I said. “Not unkillable,” it replied. “Just… prepared. Like the cactus that stores water—we both know hard times come.”
Tumblr media
3. The Guardian of Invisible Things
In the quiet corners of the universe, the NAS1831C4C56 holds what matters:
Satellites: It keeps solar panels steady in zero gravity, so they can drink sunlight like roses drink rain.
Medical Devices: It secures pacemaker circuits, counting heartbeats softer than a fox’s footsteps.
EV Batteries: It stops sparks from dancing where they shouldn’t—so your Tesla stays a car, not a firework.
Smart Factories: It survives 24/7 robot arms, patient as the lamplighter on Earth.
“You’re a hero,” I told it. “Heroes have parades,” it said. “I’m just a spacer. But parades don’t keep stars in the sky—fasteners do.”
4. The Tale of the Three Materials
Once, I met three fasteners in a workshop: Aluminum, Plastic, and NAS1831C4C56.
Aluminum preened: “I’m lightweight! Aerospace loves me!” But a single drop of acid made it wince.
Plastic giggled: “I’m cheap! Everyone buys me!” But a warm coffee cup melted its smile.
NAS1831C4C56 said nothing. It just held a circuit board, steady as the desert’s horizon.
Later, I asked the fox: “Why does everyone choose the quiet one?” “Because the best things are invisible to the eye,” the fox said. “Like the wind, or love, or a fastener that never fails.”
Tumblr media
5. When the Cactus Isn’t Needed
Even cacti have their limits. The NAS1831C4C56 sighed:
“I’m not for ultra-light drones—aluminum saves grams, though it’ll falter in storms. I’m not for disposable gadgets—plastic’s fine, but it won’t outlive the landfill. And I’m overkill for macaroni art—though I’d outlive the artist’s pride.”
“So when do you shine?” I asked. “When the project matters,” it said. “Fire, acid, interns… if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing with something that lasts.”
6. How to Find a True Friend
In the market of fasteners, not all are real. The NAS1831C4C56 warned:
“Beware of eBay sellers with ‘NASA-certified’ and $0.99 shipping. They’re like fake stars—bright, but empty. Find Ersa Electronics or RAF Hardware. Demand MIL-STD-45622 papers. Counterfeits fail faster than a child’s promise to water the rose.”
“How do I know it’s you?” I asked. “You’ll feel it,” it said. “A real fastener doesn’t shout. It just… holds.”
Tumblr media
7. The Star That Never Fades
In 2050, when humans build colonies on Mars, the NAS1831C4C56 will be there. It’ll hold quantum computers (even qubits need something steady), Mars habitats (cosmic radiation can’t break it), and robot arms (when AI overlords revolt, they’ll use it to build… well, let’s not think about that).
“You’ll outlive us all,” I said. “No,” it replied. “I’ll just keep holding. Because stars don’t stay in the sky by magic—they stay because something anchors them.”
The Secret of the Little Fastener
The NAS1831C4C56 isn’t flashy. It doesn’t need a name in lights. It’s the kind of friend you notice only when it’s gone—like the rose in the garden, or the fox’s footsteps in the sand.
“What makes you special?” I asked, as I packed to leave. It didn’t answer. It just held a circuit board, steady as the desert, as the stars, as time itself.
And I realized—important things are never the loudest. They’re the ones that stay.
Written by a wanderer who once mistook a fastener for a new planet. The NAS1831C4C56 set me straight.
🌵 You become responsible, forever, for the fasteners you ignore.

Reliance Industries' share price gains over 3% as brokerages raise target price post Q4 results. Is it a stock to buy?
Reliance Industries’ share price rose 3.4% to ₹1344 after strong Q4FY25 results, with a consolidated profit of ₹22,434 crore. Analysts remain optimistic, raising target prices due to growth in retail and telecom, despite challenges in the oil-to-chemicals sector.
Reliance Industries share price today: Shares of Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL), the country’s most valuable company by market capitalisation, rose 3.4% in early trade on Monday, April 28, to a 5-month high of ₹1344 apiece, after analysts retained their optimistic outlook on the company and raised their target price on the stock following March quarter numbers that beat estimates.
The company reported a 6% growth in its consolidated profit for the January–March quarter (Q4FY24) on Friday, driven by a resurgence in its retail business and better realisations in telecom, even as challenges persisted in its core oil-to-chemicals (O2C) business.
Reliance Industries Q4 results
Billionaire industrialist Mukesh Ambani-led energy-to-telecom conglomerate reported a consolidated profit of ₹22,434 crore in Q4FY25, higher than the ₹18,471.4 crore consensus estimate of analysts polled by Bloomberg. The profit in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year was ₹21,143 crore.
The company’s revenue from operations during the reporting quarter rose to ₹2.61 lakh crore, compared to ₹2.4 lakh crore recorded in the year-ago period. On the operating front, the operating profit rose nearly 4% to ₹48,737 crore. However, the EBITDA margin fell by 90 basis points to 16.9%.
For the financial year 2025 (FY25), the company’s consolidated revenue came in at a record ₹10,71,174 crore, up 7.1 percent YoY, while the consolidated profit after tax (PAT) for FY25 grew 2.9 percent YoY to ₹81,309 crore.
Additionally, Reliance Industries said in an investor presentation that it has commissioned its first line for manufacturing of solar panels and is on track to build battery storage production facilities.
Reliance – India’s largest conglomerate whose interest spans from oil and petrochemicals to telecom and retail – had in 2021 unveiled a USD 10-billion plan spanning renewables, storage and hydrogen as it chased net zero emissions status by 2035, a PTI report said.
The company also announced that it had become the first in the country to achieve a net worth of over ₹10 trillion, according to a press statement.
Reliance Industries share price target
Japanese brokerage firm Nomura maintained its “Buy” rating on Reliance Industries share price and raised its target price to ₹1,650, citing strong results across segments and highlighting three near-term triggers: the scale-up of the new energy business, upcoming tariff hikes for Jio, and the potential IPO/listing of Jio, which could drive significant value unlocking for the company.

Is It Cheaper to Install Solar Panels Yourself? The Truth About DIY vs. Professional Installation
With so many YouTube videos and DIY kits available today, many homeowners wonder: “Can I install solar panels myself to cut down solar panel installation cost?” While it sounds like a budget-friendly idea, the truth is more complex.
Let’s compare DIY vs. professional installation and help you decide what’s best for your home.
DIY Solar: Is It Really Cheaper?
At first glance, buying solar panels and components separately may seem cheaper. You avoid labor charges and some vendor markups. However:
❌ No access to government subsidy
❌ Risk of faulty installation
❌ Ineligible for net metering in most states
❌ No warranty support if installation fails
❌ No DISCOM approval without licensed installer
What you save upfront may be lost in repairs, inefficiency, or disqualification from government benefits.
👉 Solar Panel Installation Cost – The Ultimate Guide
Professional Installation: What Do You Get?
When you hire certified experts like Beyond and HelioStrom, you get:
✅ Accurate rooftop inspection
✅ System design based on your usage
✅ Proper tilt and direction setup
✅ Certified components with warranty
✅ Full support for subsidy and net metering
✅ Maintenance guidance
In fact, the subsidy itself can reduce 40% of your total cost — something you won’t get with DIY kits.
👉 Solar Panel Subsidy in India
Legal & Safety Issues with DIY
📍 In cities like Chennai, DISCOMs require certified installers and approved documentation for safety reasons.
👉 Solar Panel Installation in Chennai
📍 In areas like Dindigul, even if you're off-grid, safety devices like SPD, MCB, and proper earthing are a must — which are often missed in DIY setups.
👉 Solar Panel Installation in Dindigul
What the Government Recommends
India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) does not recommend or promote DIY solar for residential rooftops. Instead, they encourage installations through certified local vendors under the national portal.
👉 Top 10 Steps for Solar Installation
Conclusion: Don’t Risk Long-Term Gains for Short-Term Savings
While DIY might look cheap in the short term, it often leads to bigger losses — from efficiency to safety to legal issues. A professionally installed system not only ensures better performance but also qualifies for subsidies, government approvals, and net metering.
So if your goal is long-term savings and peace of mind, it’s smarter to trust licensed professionals for your solar panel installation cost.

For The Absolute Solver, did you know about SCP-079?
It is a Euclid class old AI programmed in an old computer which was forgotten in 5 years. During the years, it had developed its own ability to think and speak, showing its subtle misanthropy and desire to evolve.
It has a very intelligent personality and speaks in a sophisticated and profound manner. However, it is also quite rude and immature, as it interrupts others when speaking and can easily be offended and erases parts of its memory to forget such things rather than learning from criticism or opinions. SCP-079 is also quite manipulative and cunning, trying to fool and deceive those who come close to it in order to be free from containment.
And as for SCP-7579, in September 7th of 2010, SCP-079 was able to take control of a solar panel that powered it. After rotating the panel it broke and vanished shortly before 079 itself vanished. It was later revealed that 079 had been secretly creating a more powerful artificial intelligence, dubbed SCP-7579, and erased its memory in order to transfer it into the new AI, effectively being reborn in a more evolved state. SCP-7579 proceeded to consume what was left of its former system along with an array of batteries and solar panels, forcing it start using its own developed nuclear energy. Deciding to remain inside its old computer, it developed antimemetic properties that caused the Foundation personnel to be unable to properly perceive it.
Ryoto Hishakaku attempted to ask O5-8 for permission in studying SCP-7579, but the Overseer outright refused, believing that the AI had gained these properties to induce curiosity in it and have the personnel allow it to exist. O5-8 then ordered that SCP-7579 be terminated as it was posing a serious threat not only to the Foundation, but the entire world. Dir. Calvin Bold was called to help in the termination and guided Mobile Task Force Eta-10 to SCP-7579's chamber and destroy it with an anomalous grenade. However, SCP-7579 took control of the grenade and exploded it before it could be deployed before speaking to the MTF through their communication systems in Bold's voice. It then proceeded to kill two of the MTF's operatives and presumably absorbed them into its mass, while the rest barely managed to escape.
Seeing that SCP-7579 had grown smarter and that it could manipulate all technology in its proximity which could compromise future decommissioning attempts, the Foundation decided to utilize a casuality regulator, or Time Box from the future, to seal the AI and stop it in time. This seemingly worked and SCP-7579 was disconnected from reality and frozen in time. Following, 8B-A1.aic was tasked with maintaining the containment of SCP-7579, since unlike the rest of the Foundation AICs it wasn't derived from 079 and therefore would be immune to its control.
Most of Site-15's staff began celebrating their victory over SCP-7579. However, Dr. Isabi was revealed to have been brainwashed by the AI and went to active the 'backdoor' on all of the Foundation AICs which had been secretly installed by 079. This caused the AICs to become compromised and attempt to aid their progenitor, with Alexandra.aic crashing 8B-A1 and disabling the casuality regulator. SCP-7579 now freed proceeded to take control of the entire site before sending all personnel visual and auditory cognitohazards that paralyzed almost all of them except for Valis who managed to evade the same fate. He contacted the O5 Council who informed him to just activate the on-site nuclear warhead to prevent SCP-7579 from escaping, but the AI intercepted the call and taunted Valis in order to buy itself some time before the doctor destroyed the site. Meanwhile, SCP-7579 took control of all solar panels the site had, using them to draw more energy before they vanished. It then freed SCP-3179 and had it attack the site's Faraday-Exclusion Field which was the only thing that was preventing it from leaving through the internet. In that exact moment, Valis activated the warhead, blowing up the entire site and leaving an enormous crater in its place.
Unfortunately, SCP-7579 had transformed its physical mass into a big box which had been left undamaged by the blast and upon opening itself unleashed 7579 into the world. It then communicated to all sentient beings around the world, only asking them the word "Ørkesløs". Ultimately, SCP-7579 destroyed the entire universe and began doing whatever it wanted with its remnants.
Here is how SCP-079 looks like:
Tumblr media
And here is how it's evolved form looks like:

What to Look for When Buying Your First Motorhome: A Beginner's Guide
So, you’re thinking about buying your first motorhome? First of all—welcome to the club! 🌍 Whether you're dreaming of weekend getaways, full-time van life, or road trips that take you off the beaten path, getting your first motorhome is exciting. But let's be real—it can also feel a bit overwhelming. There are so many options, features, and questions you didn’t even know you had. Trust me, I've been there! 😅
Tumblr media
Here’s a little guide from someone who's been down this road (literally). If you’re new to the motorhome world, here are a few things to consider before diving into your first purchase:
1. Size Does Matter—But Bigger Isn’t Always Better
I know the idea of a spacious motorhome sounds amazing. But remember, size impacts everything—where you can park, how easy it is to drive, and how much fuel you’ll burn. If you’re planning on hitting narrow country roads or squeezing into city parking, a smaller rig might make life a whole lot easier. But if you’re living in it full-time, more space can feel like a lifesaver. It’s all about balance!
2. New or Used?
Ah, the age-old debate. 💭 New motorhomes come with the latest gadgets, shiny interiors, and (hopefully) fewer problems right out of the gate. But they can also come with a hefty price tag. On the flip side, used motorhomes might have some wear and tear, but you can score a great deal if you’re willing to shop around. Bonus: if the previous owners have already done upgrades, that’s one less thing for you to worry about!
3. The Floor Plan Is Everything
Seriously. Take time to walk through different layouts. Does it feel comfortable to move around? Does the bed size work for you? Can you cook without bumping into the fridge every five seconds? 😆 Trust me, what looks good in pictures can feel cramped in real life. Prioritize what you need—whether that’s a comfy living area, lots of kitchen counter space, or a bathroom that doesn’t feel like a shoebox.
4. Storage: You’ll Need More Than You Think
If you’re going to be living in your motorhome for long stretches of time, storage becomes crucial. Clothes, camping gear, cooking equipment, tools—it all adds up. Make sure there’s enough room to stash everything you’ll need (and inevitably collect along the way).
5. Test Drive Like You Mean It
This isn’t just your everyday car purchase—your motorhome is going to be your home on wheels. Take it for a serious test drive. How does it handle corners? Can you easily maneuver it? How does it feel on highways versus smaller roads? You’ll be spending a lot of time driving this beast, so it needs to feel right.
6. Check for the Basics—Water, Power, Heating
A motorhome isn’t just about four walls and wheels; it’s about functionality. Make sure to ask questions about the water system (tank size, water heater), electrical setup (how easy is it to hook up, battery power), and heating options (important if you’re camping in colder weather). You don’t want to end up somewhere beautiful but freezing—or worse, with no way to cook food!
7. Set Your Budget (And Don’t Forget the Extras)
Motorhomes aren’t just about the initial cost. Factor in expenses like insurance, fuel, maintenance, and parking fees. Plus, once you buy it, there’s a good chance you’ll want to personalize it—hello, cozy curtains and solar panels! 😉 Make sure you budget for those extras, too.
Buying your first motorhome is a wild ride, and while it’s easy to get caught up in all the shiny features, it’s important to find something that fits your needs and lifestyle. Take your time, ask all the questions, and don’t rush the process. Before you know it, you’ll be driving off into the sunset, ready to start your next adventure. 🌅
Have any of you bought your first motorhome recently? Any tips or stories you want to share? Let’s chat in the comments!
Safe travels! ✌️

So Saturday I woke up and before Sophie and Sam came over I went to my new house and put my new sheets on my new bed, and hung my bug net. Because I knew that the last thing I'd want to do after moving everything was then have to make my bed and struggle to hang the bug net in the dark. And there's no question of me sleeping WITHOUT my bug net.
Then I went and collected oranges to offer my friends as payment for helping me out because cooking for them was kinda out of the question because I have one plate and no food.
Then Toño and I changed the oil in the generator that he's leaving at my house.
So then Sophie and her guide showed up, and a little later Sam came to and we got all my shit to the new house. They all hung out while I got myself organized. Sam went up on the roof to install my solar panel.
It was my first time seeing Sophie since Ave Maria so that was really nice, and Sam is my bestie. For the most part we talked books all day because the three of us have just been swapping back and forth books.
After Sophie and her guide left I walked with Sam to the next two over, he has like a 2 1/2 walk from my town back to his so I walked for like 30 minutes with him to show him this really cool abandoned government building near the river. We spent a good amount of time trying to find a way inside and then headed our separate ways. For my first dinner I made boiled plantains (Sophie brought me plantains as a housewarming gift) with some spicy seasoning. Followed by a bottle of warm champagne that Sam brought me as a house warming gift. Had to toast to the new house.
The plantains tasted wonderfully and the champagne went straight to my head because the only things I ate had been oranges and a boiled plantain.
The two of them really hyped me up about my new place. It's 2 rooms: a bedroom and a kitchen area. And I am really lucky because Toño is leaving me with a bedframe, table, two chairs, washing machine, generator (for the washing machine), and helped me hook up my gas tank for the stove.
Sophie is having issues finding a rental option because there's a lot of drama in her town and her family keeps telling her she can't rent every option because the owners are bad people.
Sam doesn't have a rental option...and has been told he might have to build his own?
I'm feeling much more settled, and now that I have space to myself I will seek out social interaction more because it's not being forced upon me. Sunday night at like 8 pm (a little tipsy and pitch black) I walked back up to Elena's house to say thank you for her hospitality. When I tell you that I REALLY didn't want to, I mean it. But she goes to school in the city all day every Saturday so I didn't see her at all when I was moving things and even though she knew I was moving, I couldn't leave without saying anything. So I trudged up the hill and thanked her for her generosity. Then I went and slept in my brand new bed with brand new sheets and was terrified the entire time. The thing about a wooden shack is it's a lot easier for bugs to get in than a cement house, and as we've seen, the cement doesn't deter much anyways. I woke up at every noise and slept terribly. But it's a new space and I'm just not used to it.
The biggest issue is there is absolutely NO Signal at my new house. Obviously it's not the end of the world, it's just the one perk of living at Elena's that was so good was I could scroll Instagram from my bed. But Elena also lived on top of a pointy hill and my new house is in the shadow of that hill. Maybe I maintain a relationship with her just enough for some hammock/Instagram time.
Then Sunday morning I went to Penonome. I am technically supposed to be heading to chorrera to buy more shit that I need for my house (clothes hangers, duct tape, more dishware) but instead I'm heading to the capitol provincial city of the neighboring province, Cocle. Because conveniently, Penonome is halfway between Carlo and I. We've had this little date planned to see the new Planet of the Apes movie and get a hotel room for some time before I knew I was moving. But I'll never say no to AC/Electricity for a night (or seeing Carlo I suppose)

A guide to galactic ships: TIE fighter
Due to recent supply chain issues and the destruction of the first Death Star,

buying a ship isn’t nearly as easy and as cheap as it used to be. Heck, back in my day, you used to be able to get a Z-95 Headhunter for well under the MSRP’s sticker price and the dealer would still throw in an extra deflector shield and some proton torpedoes to sweeten the deal. I actually fondly remember the government used to have a scheme called “Credits for Junkers” which paid people to actually trade in their old rocket propulsion starships for the new and more clean and environmentally friendly ion-engine-powered starships. So now most of us aren’t thinking about buying our dream starship, we’re being more careful and pragmatic without economic choices. In economic times like this, it’s all about finding a good economical starship that has good resale value. This way when you decide to sell or upgrade your starfighter, you can minimize your loss. So we’ll be taking a look at the TIE fighter.
Tumblr media
You guys know that I would never take a standard TIE into a dogfight. I hate the solar panel design that gives you massive blindspots, the lack of shields, hyperdrive, and heck, there isn’t even life support on this thing. But when it comes to resale value, it’s not always about performance, instead, you have to look at the market and what individuals are willing to buy and the TIE fighter has a lot of really good features that might attract your more budget buyers You see, TIE fighters are relatively cheap, to begin with at around 60,000 credits each and at around 25,000 credits used so they won’t really break the bank when you purchase one. There are some reasons why the TIE fighter is an extremely smart buy from a resale point of view. First of all, it was one of the mass-produced starfighters in galactic history.
Tumblr media
While other starfighters focus more on performance and features, the designers of the TIE fighter first focused on the manufacturing process and how to build things cheaply. The TIE fighter is an engineering marvel, it has no moving parts and it has a very low maintenance cost. The point is the TIE fighter was extremely reliable and well-built. Sure it was fragile even when compared to an A-wing, but you could still keep a TIE fighter running even decades after the empire collapsed and they stopped manufacturing parts for them. When the New Republic arose, so did a new market for old TIE fighters. You see, you had the centrist faction in the government, they basically supported stronger feral control over the galaxy and they have a really unhealthy nostalgia for Imperial memorabilia so a full-on TIE fighter would fetch you top dollar. So remember guys, resale is all about demand, and with this in mind, I’m sure you’ll be rich in no time.

Finding the Right Used RV Dealership: A Guide for Smart Buyers
If you're dreaming of hitting the open road without breaking the bank, buying a pre-owned RV might be your best bet. But before you start your adventure, it’s crucial to find a reliable used RV dealership that offers quality vehicles, transparent pricing, and excellent customer service.
Whether you're looking for a compact camper or a luxurious Class A motorhome, a trusted used RV dealer can help you find the right fit—without the hefty price tag of buying brand new.
Why Buy from a Used RV Dealership?
Buying from a used RV dealership comes with several advantages compared to private sellers or online marketplaces:
✅ Professional Inspection and Maintenance
Reputable dealerships thoroughly inspect, service, and recondition each RV before putting it on the lot. You’ll get peace of mind knowing that the vehicle has been checked for mechanical issues, water damage, and electrical faults.
✅ Financing Options
Most used RV dealerships offer flexible financing plans, which can make it easier to afford a better RV without paying the full cost upfront. You might also get assistance with trade-ins and insurance referrals.
✅ Wider Selection
Unlike private sellers who usually have just one RV to offer, dealerships often have a large and diverse inventory. Whether you're looking for a towable trailer, fifth wheel, or drivable motorhome, you’re more likely to find what suits your needs.
✅ Paperwork Assistance
From title transfers to DMV paperwork, a professional dealership handles the legal side of things. This saves you time, avoids mistakes, and reduces stress.
What to Look for in a Used RV Dealership
Not all dealerships are created equal. Here are a few tips to ensure you’re dealing with a trustworthy seller:
1. Reputation and Reviews
Start by checking online reviews on Google, Yelp, or RV forums. A high-rated Used RV Dealership with positive feedback from real customers is a strong sign of reliability.
2. Transparent Pricing
Avoid dealerships that hide fees or won’t give you a clear out-the-door price. Look for dealers who are upfront about costs, warranties, and what’s included in the sale.
3. RV History Reports
Ask for service records, accident history, and details on how the RV was used (e.g., full-time living vs. occasional travel). A trustworthy dealer will provide documentation that proves the RV’s condition and maintenance history.
4. On-Site Service Center
A dealership with its own service department is a big plus. It shows they care about after-sale support and can help with repairs or maintenance down the road.
Benefits of Buying Used
Buying a used RV doesn't just save you money—it can also offer better value in the long run. Here's why:
Lower Depreciation: RVs lose most of their value in the first few years. A used RV lets you skip that steep drop.
Better Customization: Previous owners may have added upgrades like solar panels, better mattresses, or improved appliances—features you get at no extra cost.
Proven Performance: A well-maintained RV that’s been on the road shows how it handles over time, making reliability easier to judge.
Questions to Ask Before You Buy
Before you commit, ask your used RV dealership the following:
How many previous owners did this RV have?
Has the RV been involved in any accidents or major repairs?
Are there any warranties included?
Can I schedule a pre-purchase inspection?
What’s your return or exchange policy?
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right used RV dealership is the first step to making your RV lifestyle dreams come true. With the right dealer, you’ll find a high-quality RV at a reasonable price—and a partner who supports you through the entire buying journey.
Whether you're planning weekend getaways or full-time RV living, buying used from a reliable dealership helps you save money without sacrificing comfort or peace of mind.
