How Britain's Boldest Band Swaggered Far From Home To Find Fame And 'Truth' - Billboard, 2005-08-27, Vol.117 (35), p.32-41
Text version of the interview with Paul Sexton below.
Section: STARS
How Britain's Boldest Band Swaggered Far From Home To Find Fame And 'Truth'
It has often been a rocky decade, but Oasis has rolled with it.
Reinvigorating the dreary British music scene of the pre-Britpop 1990s, these dropouts hailing from a Manchester, England, housing project sparkled and soared like the champagne supernova of their famous song.
Steadfast in the belief that it is better to risk a bad opinion than excite no opinion at all, the band raced up the rankings in U.K. rock without looking back. When it hit the top 10 for the first time in the summer of 1994 with "Live Forever," fans knew the title was no empty promise.
The swagger of Oasis' first chart singles earlier that year, "Supersonic" and "Shakermaker," presented an offer that a somnambulant British music industry could not, and did not, want to resist.
But the group's braggadocio was founded in hard work, endless rehearsals and gigs with little glamour from as early as 1991.
Noel Gallagher, then 24, was a Stone Roses fan who had been turned down as the frontman by another popular local act, Inspiral Carpets, and went to work instead as their roadie. Younger brother Liam was a mere 19. The pair even then were prone to the public sparring that would colorfully punctuate their eventual rock conquest.
The decision by Creation Records founder Alan McGee to sign and champion Oasis produced more than just personal riches. Beginning with the band's debut album, "Definitely Maybe," the Creation collaboration sparked a decade-plus career that has grown into a musical landmark for a generation, first in Britain and then around the world.
The history of a truly larger-than-life British rock band has unfolded in the last 10 years. Working with a variety of band members from that day through to the release of their current album, "Don't Believe the Truth," the Gallaghers have walked it exactly as they've talked it.
Except, of course, on those occasions when either or both of the brothers do not care to talk at all and fail to show for interviews. It is a frustration this writer already has experienced and one which, true to form, Liam chose to reprise for this report.
Nevertheless, his older brother was in an expansive yet thoughtful mood as he reflected on the past, present and future of Oasis.
What do you recall of the British music scene you gate-crashed in 1994?
Let me see. Suede were the great white hopes. Blur were a fucking mess. Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine were still getting front covers. It wasn't that long since Ned's Atomic Dustbin. Primal Scream were in absolute limbo, and it was all kind of going down the toilet.
As I remember, nobody looked good, nobody sounded good, nobody was pointing to the sky and going, "Come on, let's have it!" The music press, the writers and photographers were shit; it was horrible.
We were in a rehearsal space in Manchester, in a little room at the Boardwalk. We were doing this set with "Live Forever," "Rock & Roll Star," "Bring It On Down" and "I Am the Walrus." And we were just waiting for somebody. We weren't going to go into East West Records or XL and say, "We're the greatest band in England, you've got to sign us," because then you're automatically in debt to them before they've even given you a pound.
We knew that if we got it right, we would wipe the floor with everyone. Added to that, me and Liam were eminently quotable the whole time.
Now that you have become a long-serving band, does that help you to understand better the motivation behind groups like U2, R.E.M. and even the Rolling Stones?
I'm a massive fan of the Stones, and I don't think anybody should deny them the right to carry on making music. I just wish they wouldn't wear leggings.
In the case of R.E.M., I don't own any of their records, but we kind of meet them on the road every now and again. Peter Buck and the bass player are great, but it's the big blue stripe, there's no need for that.
U2, I love, I grew up listening to them, and I own all their albums. I remember going to see them on the Zoo TV tour and Bono in his alter ego as the Fly was ridiculing the guy with the mullet and the campaigning rock star. It's funny how it's now come full circle, and he's back.
The longer you go on, it magnifies more of what you are. The longer we do it, the more we look like where we come from.
In the case of me and Liam, who've been there the longest, we look like a couple of guys from a council estate in Burnage and always will be. We never went to college, we were kicked out of school and went straight onto building sites. There was no time for pretension.
But you were very single-minded about going after success, weren't you?
When we started off, we wanted the girls, the cocaine, the fur coats . . . we never got to the leather trousers though, thank God. It wasn't like an act, it was almost like working-class people winning the pools. We went bananas. I've got a fleet of cars I bought at that period, and I've never had a driving license, ever. But it was just, "Fuck it, man! I want a Rolls Royce!" You're in that position for a couple of years, and then you think, "This is bullshit. Who am I?"
Do you think it's possible for a long-running band to be on an upward curve all the time? Don't there have to be bad times?
I wrote the first three Oasis albums all before I had a record deal. So I never had to sit down and reinvent the band until [2000's] "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants," and I kind of took that too far. The band never needed reinventing, it was great as it was. You start using different techniques, like drum loops, and we kind of went away from what we were, and it was difficult to get that back.
All the songs off "Definitely Maybe" and "Morning Glory" I wrote when I was 21, so I was then trying to rewrite the script at the age of 31, and you're a completely different character. I do like all the words on "Giants," but I lost the formula, whatever it was.
After a band achieves the iconic status that you did, is that when you start questioning your motivation?
There are periods where you think, "What am I doing?" or "What am I doing it for?"; that's a more scary question. "I've made shitloads of money, I've left my mark in music, why am I still doing this?," and it takes a while to answer that question. It comes back every time we're at the end of a tour and you have three or four months off and then you've got to get back on the saddle. More often than not, the answer that comes back from me is, "What else are you going to do?"
I struggle with this conundrum. It's not a very noble thing to carry on, it's not very dashing. But I often meet people who've been in great bands and you go, "What are you doing now?" and they say, "I'm not doing anything," and I think that's more sad.
So I'd rather be doing something that I think is good. I never even rated that song "Lyla" [the first single off "Don't Believe the Truth"], and then you see 70,000 people going mad to it and singing the song, and you think, "What do I know?"
And watching people doing that on the recent tour, they're not just celebrating their favorite band or some of their favorite songs. They respond to Oasis almost as a complete validation of their lives.
You'll look up at the stands, particularly doing "Don't Look Back in Anger" [the band's second British No. 1, in 1996], and there'll be groups of people just hugging each other, not even watching the band, just singing that song to themselves. It's obviously something that means so much to them. Those songs are now kind of part of British culture. It's a great position to be in.
Did it make a big difference working with American producer Dave Sardy on this album?
There's two things to this. We decided early on that we wanted to use a producer, then it was a case of "We're going to let somebody else make all the major decisions." Luckily for us by the time we got to Dave Sardy, we'd already written all the songs and arranged them all, so all he really had to do was put them on tape.
It's opened our eyes a little bit. I was sick of being a songwriter/producer/band member. I just wanted to be in a band again—I didn't want to be a producer, just the guy that plays guitar and writes a few songs.
Even being the main songwriter and everybody looking to me for approval on everything, it was like, "Hang on, I'm an equal part of this band in songwriting terms now, so it's all our problem if it goes wrong but we'll all share the glory if it goes right." That's why this album being a success, especially with critics in America, it makes it more special.
Your trials and tribulations with band in-fighting and canceled tours soured your reputation, especially in America. Do you feel more well-disposed toward the American market now?
I've never had a blatant disregard for it in the first place. It's just that America is a really delicate flower that needs a lot of attention, and we're not those kind of people.
The reason U2 and R.E.M. and Coldplay are the biggest white rock bands in America is because of their frontmen. Not being negative towards Liam, he's just not Chris Martin, he's not Bono, he's not Michael Stipe. He's Liam. For all intents and purposes, Americans don't get Liams. I think we're musically as strong as those three bands put together, but as characters we're different.
Did starting your own label Big Brother, in 2000, change the way you view the record industry?
Big Brother was started in a haze of ideals: "We're going to sign loads of bands." Then it was like, "How much? Fuck that!" I take all my money out of Big Brother and put it into my own little label, Sour Mash. I've just signed the [Liverpool] band Shack, and I've done a few little things.
But the thing about bands these days is everybody wants to be the next Oasis, and that doesn't mean slogging it out around the toilet [gigs], it means, "Give me the check, I need to go to the Levis shop and I need a 1960s Gibson."
It's all about advances these days, and most managers of these new bands are idiots. We signed to Creation for 50 grand, and we didn't get any money for about three years. You tell that to a kid these days, and they'll vomit.
Have you ever thought seriously about going solo?
I think about it all the time. I'm doing a bit of a soundtrack for some film that's coming out next year. But because I enjoy time off so much, by the time I've had my time off, it's time to do Oasis again. I always think I'll write the songs on the road, come back and in the six months Oasis are not doing anything, I'll put out a solo album. But because I'm [lazy], it never gets done, and by the time I want to start doing stuff, it's Oasis time. I hope it happens before I'm 40, but I'm 38 now.
What about Liam?
I think he'll do it before I will. He's got more songs, and he's a lot more driven in that department, because although he's 30-odd, he's only just started writing songs, so he's kind of where I was when I was 21.
But now, in the United Kingdom, you can't move for bands paying tribute to your influence.
We thought bands would read [our interviews in] NME and immediately form groups, which they did. But it's only becoming apparent now, [with] the likes of Razorlight, the Libertines, the Killers, the Strokes, Kings of Leon and Jet, all these bands are [citing] "Definitely Maybe." They don't even go "Oasis, Oasis," it's that album.
We were the first people to come out and say, "The world's a great place, life is for living. Forget grunge music. Get a pint of Guinness down your neck, and pick that guitar up."

Goodies I’ve Received During My Offline Period! ❤
Since it’s always been a tradition for me to share with all of you what I’ve received on arrival of some of the DVDs, CDs, Magazines and Good’s that I buy; I thought I would make a *little* post of some of the things that I have purchased and has arrived since being offline! :D This won’t be as long since I haven’t purchased much since I was away due to pre-ordering and a hectic December, but I try my best to keep up with what I can :) And a head’s up that some of the photos have the flash on since my room is at the back of the house and the light doesn’t come through my window xD
There’s a lot to get through, so all of it will be under the cut (especially things that could be spoilers) ♥
1. Di Kita Malimot Drama DVD & Magazines!

I pre-ordered the Di Kita Malimot DVD back in August last year. I was really excited to see the Drama for the first time, and I wanted to have a copy of the extras as well as the visual book that came as a bonus. Unfortunately since I don’t have a Blu-Ray player for my laptop (as it’s a laptop without a disc drive), I was only able to watch the extras once on the Blu-Ray player I have in the living room for the TV when no one was home xD The Drama itself is quite funny and good to watch! You’d see them act in ways that you never thought they would, which is a good pick-me-up on days when you’re sad and in need of a laugh xD Overall, the Drama was definitely worth the wait! :D And, the visual book has a text mistake in it as well that was pointed out to SLF, and they made a note on the item page for those who purchased it. But they didn’t request for people to send it back, only to just be aware of it and what the part was meant to say.
The magazine contents for all of them are amazing (especially the photos ♥), and the magazine’s in that photo are:
CDJournal October 2018 Issue
B’s LOG November 2018 Issue
Stage Fan Vol. 3 Issue
Cast Size Summer Special 2018
JUNON September 2018 Issue
JUNON November 2018 Issue
2. Stage Stars & Sparkle Magazine’s (Present)

These were one’s that I didn’t buy myself, a friend ended up getting them for me as a present in November! :D This was actually a big surprise for me since I didn’t know that they were going to get them for me, it just arrived at my door xD So, at least this post allows me to say thank you to them for getting me these magazines and I love them very much! ♥ The magazines here are Stage Stars Vol.3 and Sparkle Vol. 35 :)
3. UTOPIA Albums & Sakiyama Tsubasa Birthday Event Goods

I’ll start with the Birthday Goods first xD I pre-ordered them the second pre-ordering started, which actually happened to be during my lunch break when I was doing my teaching placement LOL! But, there’s a long story with these and the UTOPIA albums. Due to December being a busy and a not very financial month for me (I went on a trip to the city, I had to pre-order the Toumyu nendo’s, and I had to pay for subscriptions, phone bill and Christmas presents), I had to put off getting these shipped out to me (along with the albums), until January this year. Luckily I got paid on the first of the month, so I was able to get them shipped out as fast as I could xD They arrived to my proxy around the end of November. The bromides are literally dangerous and cute, and the pamphlet photos are just as perfect, along with the interview being quite deep interesting! ❤ The contents in this photo are:
Birthday Event Pamphlet
Birthday Event Bromides A, B & C (there was no bonus for getting all 3 of them as that was only during the event run)
Birthday Event Ball-Pen (Pink) & Automatic Pencil (Blue) (it’s one of those pencils that you push on and the lead just comes out, so you don’t have to sharpen it, just buy lead refills xD)

Next is the UTOPIA Albums xD I pre-ordered these in November and they arrived the day before release day to my proxy xD I wanted to have them as a Christmas present, but because of the lack of funds was an issue for me in December, I had to wait >.< I got them online which included the online purchase bonus with 2 RAW photos per album (one as a bonus, one as an extra), and there’s 2 in each of those 4 holders. With the RAW photos and the Trading Cards, let’s just say that bad luck is still on my side, and you’ll know what I mean in a moment xD
After listening to all of the songs in full for the first time (excluding “Dancing☆Samurai” thanks to KENZO and TOMO from DA PUMP collaborating with Tsubasa to make a Music Video for the cover of the song by doing the choreography and producing the MV), I fell in love with all of them instantly! ❤ The lyrics for them all have a purpose behind them and you can really feel the emotion in his voice. For the songs Tsubasa wrote the lyrics for himself, “Re:quest” for Kurogarasu and “Snow Gift”, I was really proud and amazed by them! The lyrics for “Re:quest” gives that dark, powerful vibe, which i feel links perfectly with the theme of his main starring movie “Kurogarasu”. “Snow Gift” was a lot more softer and kind of brings out his loving side. But it could also be perceived as him and his passion and never wanting to let go of it. This is his first time writing lyrics, but I do hope in the future, he will be able to write more songs and let his feelings come through ♥
As for the MV, MV Making Video & Special Movie, the short MV of UTOPIA gave us a preview of most of it, so the last part was a total mystery, and it was really beautiful ♥ As for the other 3 MV’s that were on there, I STILL love them to this very day xD The MV Making Video was short but sweet :) They just showed some of the places he took photos at and a couple of other little things that I had a good laugh at, as I had my suspicion that the Special Movie would give the full making in Macao. And I was right xD But I still loved the Making Video since there was some good shots :D The Special Movie was really good! ♥ The way it started I had a bit of a laugh at, but it was really cute. It follows through the 2 days he was in Macao doing his MV shoot and the photos as well for the cover, trading cards, and etc. He really did seem to have a lot of fun and was grateful to be able to do it in Macao, and Tsubasa would still have his little antics here and there as well xD Overall, I loved all of it! ❤
These are the RAW photos I got:

I got doubles AND triples LOL! As expected of me to end up with the random draw like that, but I still love all of the photos anyway! ♥ They’re all of Tsubasa’s good sides and he’s really attractive in them all ❤ And if anyone has any doubles that aren’t in this photo and I have one of the photos in the triple and double that you’d like to trade with, by all means don’t be afraid to ask! :D If not, I might sell them or do a giveaway xD
The Trading Card bad luck continues to play with me and get worse each time xD So, I’ll let the photo speak for itself:

THEY’RE BOTH DOUBLES LOL! So, I ended up with 2 out of the 5 this time. It’s the same with Crescent Moon, except I got 3 of the same in that one xD I got the two top ones in the MV and Special Movie editions, and the bottom two in the photobook and CD only editions xD The trading card photos are really cute (not to mention quite good looking ♥), and I was super anxious when opening them as well as the RAW photo bonus also. Again, if anyone has a double of the other trading cards and you don’t have one of the ones in this photo, I’d be glad to trade with you! :D If not, again I’ll either sell them or do a giveaway :)
4. Surprise Birthday Present

Since what I’ve purchased is a surprise birthday present for a friend, I’m not going to show or say what they are (hence I took a photo of what it looks like from behind, and put a line in it to keep it as a surprise as it had the name of it on the back xD) since their birthday is still a while away and I don’t want to ruin the surprise! xD I got these off Mercari for a reasonable price and brand new! Thank you to the lovely An, @beansproutsong, for helping me purchase these for me through her proxy! ❤ I have used her a few times and her service fees are very reasonable for second-hand goods and her service is literally 10/10 in every way possible! So don’t be afraid to message her here on Tumblr or on Twitter (@Angelic1408) if wanting any goods that you can’t get shipped overseas, or from second-hand sites! :D She’s one of the friendliest people (out of the many others who are friendly too) who is willing to do a personal proxy for everyone, so don’t be afraid to ask questions or get a inquiry on something :) More info about her proxy service can be found: HERE

Note
If every song from hs2 was a color, what would they be?
[Track 1] Golden
so.... this is “pretty much on the nose” for what color it should be but I see it as sunset golden... except it’s the shadows of the sunset. you know how you try to take pictures on the beach at sunset and it’s all silhouettes? exactly. it’s bright and warm and golden but ALSO dark and an outline of what you’re trying to capture. your [person] is outlined in golden hues and a slight baby pink or bright orange if the sun hits the water just right on the beach... but you can’t see the faces of those in the picture.
[Track 2] Watermelon Sugar
care-free and bright pink. you’re on a beach [again.... sorry] and you’re sleepy in the sun. you have a pink drink in hand [a strawberry daiquiri maybe?] and are dulling the sunlight by way of huge sunglasses because the ocean in front of you is insanely bright blue like the ‘electric blue’ Crayola marker. it’s a song that feels drunk and dizzy and tastes sweet even on the darkest and moody of days. fight me on this. this is my happy song. it is laced with vodka or tequila and only to be thought of as a sunset song. NEXT PLEASE
[Track 3] Adore You
this one is all earth tones... a mossy green, a deep inland lake blue, some rich soil brown, all things to make up a spring-time island. there are slivers of grey and deep heather gray and an occasional metallic gold of sea life below the waters, but also hues of deep red-brown and turquoise (easily confused with black or gray under the ripples of water). it’s grainy like a vintage-film reel and smells of old books.
[Track 4] Lights Up
lights up? it’s dark, y’all. all of the colors are muted and murky, kind of like you’re drunk and trying to make out what is in front of you. it’s a deep green again, a very deep yellow or beige, despite the boldness of the sounds heard. it’s as if you’re trying to fight your way out of murky lake water and as the harmonies grow to be stronger, you’re reaching closer to the top [of the lake/pond/ocean/water]. you can finally take a deep breath of clear air once you come to the top... and it’s a clear pale blue. you made it, babe.
[Track 5] Cherry
this song screams early fall morning to me. it’s foggy, there is a hue over a big field of grey and a slight pink, but it’s too early to tell. soft colors; lilac, an olive green, so many hues of pink and white and the slightest tinge of ice blue. kind of like the most stereotypical farm/field-based Nicholas Sparks movie you can think of, but made it slow-motion and sad and also probably post-rainstorm. there is most definitely a cherry blossom tree in the background and also a small white farmhouse, too.
[Track 6] Falling
periwinkle. violet. a tiny bit of a mustard yellow. the cool hues outweigh the bright character of the yellow without fail but the yellow tries to peak out every so often, clearly outweighed by the darkness of blues and purples. it feels like the morning dew and sticks to you like the humidity of a late summer night before a storm rolls in. you feel clouded by the weight of the world but see an ounce of hope in the peaks of the harmonies, that goddamn yellow peeking though again.
[Track 7] To Be So Lonely
baby blue ONLY for the “little boy” mention. i will not take notes on this. also... this song screams groovy and crunchy colors like burnt orange and a vivid gold color, and also a nice cheery blue. kind of the sky blue you see in cartoons but also a navy blue, too. this isn’t color related but the diversity in instrumentals here is incredible, this song feels like a goddam rainbow, but muted. like a jewel-toned rainbow with some glitter. only because of the use of the phrase “an arrogant son of a bitch”. case closed.
[Track 8] She
smokey and deep red embers of a flame, somehow kept alive by a force unknown. there is a deep purple vibe to this song, too, almost confused by a black or the complete absence of color in the dark of night. there isn’t a single bright thing of this song, save for maybe a spark or fleeting ember from the fire in a blazing orange or yellow. maybe even a white [if things are hot enough]. this song is pink in nature but red in execution, only shown in the light with a deep hue of maroon and gold.
[Track 9] Sunflower Vol. 6
YELLOW! YELLOW! YELLOW! is this even an arguable POINT! it is yellow and orange and bright pink and all things HAPPY because sunflowers are warm and remind me of summer when things are okay and fine and LOVELY. also there is definitely a hint of bright green and blue and a little bit of rainbow sparkle.... but only a little. kind of like only around 1:28-:1:35... you know? it’s sparkly. get out of here if you say it’s not. the “boop boops” are also translucent like bubbles and that’s a FACT
[Track 10] Canyon Moon
transition of afternoon sun to a sunset... like dusk, but a color. oranges and yellows and the preparation that goes into a bonfire. also the golden perfection of a perfectly toasted marshmallow? crisp like the evening breeze... teal and purple with darkness but kept warm by the flames of the lasting embers of the flames in front of you.
[Track 11] Treat People With Kindness (THIS IS MY FAV)
it’s rainbow. don’t even try to fight me on this. this song can only be described as confetti cannons going off at all times. i wish i had more to say but i had too much fun jamming out to this song!!!!! it’s absolute madness!!!! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!! IT’S SO BRIGHT AND NEON AND HAPPY AND I LOVE IT!!!!!!
[Track 12] Fine Line
this one starts as a very, very dark green. it stays that hue for a while but slowly transitions into a brighter blue-green as the song progresses. little glimpses into the future of the melody show itself with golden and pink rays but they’re drowned out by the green-blue until the peak of the song when things transition into “we’ll be alright” over and over and over. it’s like a sunrise after fighting your way through the foliage of a dark night and not sure where you’ll end up. but you make it though it all and finally find the sun... golden and shadowy like this album started as. the change between dark and like are so obvious during this song.

377. Miss Sparkle Radner

I made the mistake of watching the documentary Love Gilda about Gilda Radner a few weekends ago. Why a mistake? Because I cried and cried watching the love a little Yorkie named Sparkle gave to her owner, Gilda while she was going through cancer treatments. Whenever Gilda was waking up from her chemotherapy treatments, her husband, Gene Wilder would bring Sparkle in a little tote bag and when Gilda got up, sparkle would sit in her lap, or lie down next to her.
Around Thanksgiving, 1982, while Gilda and Gene were trying to make their relationship work, Gilda received Sparkle from a friend of the family in Michigan. Gilda said in her book, It’s Always Something, “Sparkle was flown into New York from Michigan, just like me.”
Gilda speculated that Gene finally decided to settle down with her when she showed responsibility when Sparkle accidentally ate rat poison at an airport (from her book):
[...]
in August of 1984, Gilda appeared on David Letterman’s show with Sparkle, because she stated in her book that she was afraid to go out there alone. I think she was feeling the same way in 1986 when she invited her neighbors on Letterman.

When Gene and Gilda got married in 1984 in France, Sparkle came along! When they honeymooned in Rome, she came along too:
1

In 1986, Gilda was diagnosed with stage IV Ovarian Cancer. In late 1988, it reappeared. In a 1989 interview with Bob Costas weeks before her untimely death (she slipped into a coma after going under for a cat scan and died on May 20, 1989).
He brought Sparkle out when Bob asked how Gilda was doing. Gene said that Gilda was doing great and she was out promoting It’s Always Something while Gene babysat Sparkle.

In 1991, in a People interview, Gene said this:
If I need to cry or think a little bit, I’ll go over to the cemetery where she is buried to make sure the tree our friends planted is doing well and the grounds are kept up. I think one of the things that would make Gilda happiest is if Sparkle, her Yorkshire terrier, pee-peed right on top of her grave. One for Mama. She’d laugh. 2

[Translation] SOARA Drama CD Vol. 4 - Track 2 - Part 2

Here’s part 2 of track 2~! It runs from minute 15:04 to the end www I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did~!
Again, thank you to @ryuukia for sharing the files~!
※ Please don’t re-post the English translations without permission. Please like and re-blog instead of re-posting ^^
Under the cut, enjoy~!
[15:04]
JUNYA: I have your songs in a playlist that I listen to, you know?
SORA: Eh? Is that true? That makes me so happy~!
JUNYA: It’s true! At first I only used them to gather info on how students would feel but I really do listen to it a lot.
JUNYA: Normally for my work I listen to a song one can normally dance to but, since your songs have a different feel, I usually listen to “Itsuka no Natsu Matsuri” and uh… ah! “McGuffin,” was it?
SOARA: WOAH!
NOZOMU: So you really do listen to them, Sensei~!?
JUNYA: Yeah. You have a lot of easy to listen to songs. Plus, it somehow… It makes me want to cheer you on.
JUNYA: It makes me feel like I can do my best and look forward, too!
JUNYA: They’re all such wonderful songs.
REN: Uwah~! Thank you very much!
JUNYA: Ah, but…
REN: Hm?
JUNYA: The latest song’s PV that was just released had a different feel again, huh?
JUNYA: The atmosphere (of the song) in general is good, the lyrics are powerful.
JUNYA: It’s a song where I can feel how much you’ve moved forward.
JUNYA: Ah, that’s only my opinion though…!
REN: Ah… That’s…
NOZOMU: Because it’s RE:START! A new departure! A brand-new SOARA! It’s a song about our restart~!
JUNYA: I see now. It really does feel like that.
SORA: Um…! Sensei… What did you think…?
JUNYA: Hm? About what?
SORA: About the new song. Since you’re a pro dancer who’s listened to a lot of songs… I just wondered what you thought of it…
REN: Sora-senpai…
JUNYA: Hm? Ah, I’m sorry! Did what I say sound negative?
JUNYA: I really love it!
JUNYA: It made me feel like “Oh! I love this” and I could feel the dedication that Sora had as the writer of the song.
JUNYA: Like, it made me want to dance?
SORA: Ah, i-is that so…? I’m so relieved…!
JUNYA: You’re amazing huh, Sora-kun.
JUNYA: I knew this already but, you really are a professional composer and everyone in SOARA’s an artist, huh?
SOSHI: Though, the extent of his dancing level is only until the Awa Odori dance. (1)
SORA: Sou~! The Awa Odori is a very wonderful dance, I’ll have you know!
SOSHI: That’s what you’re mad about?
SORA: I’m mad about both! You keep saying “Awa Odori” You’re persistent.
JUNYA: (laughs) Well, it’s not like you have no sense of rhythm and your stamina is not bad so if you get used to dancing, you’ll get better in no time.
JUNYA: Didn’t you do well with dancing during the previous live?
SORA: I did, right? (excitedly) I did, didn’t I~? Sensei gets it~!
JUNYA: My job is definitely to be able to teach Sora-kun who can only dance the Awa Odori dance, a new and fast-paced kind of dance, right~?
SORA: That’s right, uh-huh. yep—Huh?
JUNYA: And so~! Since you’ve gotten one step closer to it, today’s lessons are over~!
JUNYA: Thank you for the hard work, SOARA.
MORI: Thank you for taking care of us, Sensei.
SOARA: Thank you for the hard work!
JUNYA: Alright, I’ll do more work. I wanna finish the dances for the other two songs, too.
SOSHI: Sensei, you like doing choreography, huh?
JUNYA: Well, of course. I’m doing
JUNYA: I love it so much that I… dropped out of university halfway the other year.
[18:30]
SOSHI: Hm?
SORA: Huh?
REN: Hm?
SORA: Uni…versity…?!
NOZOMU: You say…?!
JUNYA: E-eh…? Th-that’s what you’ll react to…?
SORA: I uh… No, no, I mean… Right, guys…?
REN: Y-yes… U-um… Th-this might sound a little pretentious asking this so late but…
REN: How old are you, Sensei…?
JUNYA: Eh? Wait a sec… Wait. Up until now, how old did you think I was?
SORA: Here! Is this the time where we can frankly say what we thought?
JUNYA: Go ahead, go ahead~ Please don’t hold back.
SOSHI: 32 years old.
REN: 34 years old.
MORI: 35 years old?
NOZOMU: 33, single, but has been living together with their girlfriend for 10 years~!
SORA: 31, a father of 2, married early and now your children are almost in middle school.
JUNYA: The scenario for the last guess is too complicated…
JUNYA: (laughing nervously) E-eh…?! Do I look that told?
REN: A-ah, no… It’s not… No, uh… It’s not that you look old but… You seem so professional and have such dignity that uh… (gasps and says with a squeaky voice) Right?!
NOZOMU: (with a not so convincing tone) Th-that’s right~! It’s exactly like that, yeah!
SORA: In other words… Sensei is a lot… younger (than what we guessed)…?
JUNYA: Young, you say… I’m from… the same generation as you guys…
SOARA: EEEEEHHHH?!!?
JUNYA: I’m 22 years old, you know…?
SOARA: 22 YEARS OLD??!?!?!
SOSHI: Really? That’s only a 1-year difference.
SORA: Eh? EH? EEEHHH??! With that face?!
JUNYA: “With th—“ uwah… Saying that kinda hurts.
JUNYA: I-it’s true that my friends often say I look older for my age…
NOZOMU: There’s a limit to how dignified you can be…!
NOZOMU: Even though you look like the kinda guy who would say, “I danced in America when I was younger!”?
JUNYA: I’ll take that as a compliment, okay?
JUNYA: Man, now I understand. No I wonder I couldn’t completely break the ice with you.
JUNYA: I thought that you were just simply super polite people but… I guess that’s how it is, huh?
JUNYA: Ma~n, I’m at a loss. Well, it’s true that I’ve been dancing since I was very young though. But, I’m still a very young person who just started doing choreography.
JUNYA: I’d say about as long as you guys have been performing.
SORA: Eh? Is that so?
JUNYA: Yeah, yeah. I got into the industry at about the same time as you did with yours.
JUNYA: I’ll say this again. I’ll be in your care.
MORI: Y-yes… We’re in your care, too.
JUNYA: Like I said, you’re too formal. Lessons are over so please, speak casually.
JUNYA: You can call me “Junya” too, if you want.
MORI: Even if you say that…
REN: Y-yes… Changing so suddenly is…
NOZOMU: Aw ma~n~ We’re in your care, Junya~! We don’t have that much age difference~!
REN: There’s one who just did it, though!
[21:34]
HINATA: Pardon the intrusion~! Hey youngsters, great work today!
HINATA: Did you break a proper sweat?
REN: Ah, Wakatsuki-san. Thank you for the hard work.
SOARA: Thanks for the hard work.
HINATA: Yes, yes~ Those are faces of people who did their best today~
HINATA: Looks like the lesson went well. All’s well that ends well, I say~
SOSHI: Oh yeah. There’s this person who doesn’t look his age, too. In a different way from Junya, I mean.
JUNYA: Eh, is that so? Manager-san’s not the same age as us…?
SOSHI: What…?
JUNYA: Is he like those people who skip a grade and is a lot younger than us?
REN: It’s the opposite.
JUNYA: Opposite?
HINATA: He looks very young but Wakatsuki-san is 33 years old. He’s married and has two children.
JUNYA: …! 33 years old…?! A father of 2?! For real?!
SORA: It’s totally true.
HINATA: Hm~? What’s this, what’s this? You guys over there, are you talking about me~?
HINATA: Fumufumufumufufufu~ (2) Do you want to know the secret behind this youth~?
HINATA: (laughs) Guess I have no choice~! I shall tell you as a treat!
HINATA: You just have to follow the SNS account that I use for personal stuff~!
HINATA: With the power of my life force and my beautiful angels, I’m sure you’ll get younger just by looking at it~! (sparkles)
HINATA: That’s my secret! It’s familial love! It’s overflowing love!! (more sparkling sound effects)
JUNYA: Uwah… (laughs) His personality is like a celebrity’s…
SOARA: That’s totally it…
HINATA: Oh my~ Mr. Dance Instructor, thank you for giving lessons today, too.
HINATA: How were my children? Did they level up from the Awa Odori?
JUNYA: (laughs)
SORA: Even Wakatsuki-san’s saying that?!
==END==
Translator’s Notes:
(1) The “Awa Odori” is one of Japan’s largest dancing festivals. It’s a celebration held usually as part of the Obon Festival during August. It’s Japan’s largest dancing festival. There’s choreographed street dancing and all that but, just very simple dances that everyone can dance. [Source] Here’s a link to a video of the traditional dances just so we all have an idea of Sora’s dancing level www
※ Please don’t re-post the English translations without permission. Please like and re-blog instead of re-posting ^^

In the making for LIMBO session Vol 1. a creation by NicoNote / wang inc. with full complicity of Rizosfera, deleuzian chaosm-editors. Mastered ready for the soon to come vinyl production of this new album LIMBO SESSION VOL. 1 :: NICONOTE / WANG INC :: RIZOSFERA-NUKFM :: NURKFM014 A duo of the highest level, NicoNote / Wang Inc. The former, an amazing chanteuse of the Italian and European avant-garde song, the latter an acrobatic playmaker of the most radical electronics of the European scene. In this project NicoNote and wang inc. come together to experience the intersection of poetry, vocals and synth together with rarefied and complicated grooves. Poetronics, here is the word that more than anything else comes to the mind. The result is sparkling, years ahead of the possibilities of an encounter between song and poetry and between dance-like blues experimentation and cyber poetry. First vinyl edition, 33 rpm, 140-gram disc, seven tracks, 35 minutes of lyricism and electronic pathos. A must of the new Italian music.
