Here it is! The final update before Act 5, and there was a pretty huge reveal saved for this one regarding the current owner of the queen’s ring.

But first!! After abandoning her people to die in the wreckage of Prospit, WQ arrives on Earth and reveals that she’s the owner of a special spirograph shaped key. She uses this to repair the egg-shaped command station, but it might have a couple other uses too.

- WV’s appearifier has a spirograph key toggle, allowing it to move from Earth to the Incipisphere (p.748). Presumably if moved, he could appearify items from the kids’ planets, Prospit, and Derse.

- PM’s sendificator has this same function (p.1128).

- More mysteriously, the locked room of WV’s command station has a spirograph key toggle that points to each side of a frog (p.1411). Its associated device only has one big blue button. Obviously this station was attuned to the frog temple on Jade’s island, both in its appearifier coordinates and homing mechanism. So I wonder if moving this dial attunes it to the frog temple in the Incipisphere, allowing it to travel there instead. I think that’d make sense, but wouldn’t be a super exciting reveal as we’ve already seen what happened in that temple, so I’m holding out for a more surprising reveal.

It feels good and right to see all four exiles hanging out together (plus Serenity) after following their individual stories and seeing how they ended up here. All of them dressed in rags, standing on equal ground, their chess ranks meaningless in this new planet they’ll build together – although PM is still wearing her mailbox crown. WQ speaks to WV and seems to know what he has, which is her once-discarded ring, last seen with dream John on the battlefield, now hidden in WV’s trusty knife. WV, a nonviolent protester who’s never been seen wielding any sort of weapon for combat, has held this knife close since Act 2 (p.683). This makes a lot more sense if the knife was actually a cover for another object.

I kind of assumed that the queens’ rings would only work inside Sburb sessions, mostly because Snowman isn’t wearing hers in the Intermission, and I assumed she’d want the power if she could get it. Still, I guess she’s untouchable even without it, so twelve (!) prototypings might just be an inconvenience. If her head grows strange appendages with the prototypings then her 8-ball hat would never fit. Anyway, the ring WV holds is glowing with all four orbs, so it looks like it still works, and also contains whatever Jade prototyped.

sidenote: I saw someone on a forum calling for Jade to prototype her furry Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff poster to SBAHJify Jack, which is an idea I kinda love.

Any one of the four exiles could wear this ring and gain its powers. WQ reclaiming it is really too obvious, plus she already gave up the crown, and the idea of her abdicating and then reclaiming her power at a moment that suits her doesn’t feel good to me personally – if she can reclaim power at any moment, then she never really gave it up. WV has been carrying the ring around for a long time and never put it on. He’s against the monarchy, and even if he struggles to imagine a power structure outside of it, he dreams of democracy at least in theory. Putting on the ring would go against his stated ideals, and wouldn’t fit with how he’s presented in the narrative as the little guy who has no structural or magical power but manages to rise up anyway and challenge those who do.

PM and AR both make more sense as recipients, in my opinion. When she abdicated, WQ gave PM both the crown and ring, functionally turning both the symbolic and actual power over to her. Both of those were lost to enemy hands, and are now returned. WQ has already symbolically re-crowned PM the leader, and could now turn over the actual power to her. If this happens, I’m not sure PM would actually use the ring (she’s already pretty powerful in her tenacity, diplomatic skills and swordplay), but there is something meaningful in the mail carrier finally being the one to receive the mail, instead of deliver it.

AR’s recent arc focused on him not being powerful enough – he was terrified of Bec’s creation in the frog temple, scared enough that he still surrendered when he saw WV’s pumpkin with the Bec carving much later (p.1363). And even though AR wanted to expose DD’s mutiny, he knew that DD was too powerful to take into custody (p.1924). So AR is the only one of the four exiles who actively seeks power, and might actually want to wear the ring. Obviously I don’t love the idea of the ultimate powerful item ending up in a cop’s hands, and I also don’t think people who seek power are the best ones to receive it. But if the ring is going to be used against Jack somehow as the counterpart to his powers, it’d be interesting if instead of Sburb’s classic ‘light vs dark’, the war becomes ‘old guard vs new guard Derse’, with an AR fighting for the status quo and Jack fighting for radical change – both of which would actually be bad outcomes for the kids, meaning they’d end up fighting against both sides of the war.

However, I have a wild card theory. Recent pages specifically showed that WQ brought her entourage to Earth, just to leave them behind. An entourage led by Ms. Paint, whose adventures these are, in a story that makes extensive meta-references including to the site it’s hosted on (p.112, 327, 831, 1167). That site, in-universe, holds a Midnight Crew adventure starring Spades Slick, who is alternate universe Jack Noir, who wears the Black Queen’s ring. Who better to fight against Jack than the entity who already controls the very medium he exists in? So I’m calling it now – Ms. Paint is gonna show up and wear the ring, return to the Incispisphere, and use it to help the kids take down Jack. It’s bigger than light vs dark, it’s one side of the fourth wall against the other.

Before any of that (in the ring’s timeline, at least), dream John will have to deliver the ring to WV, as he’s now seen in the clouds, and Jade will have to prototype her sprite to make that fourth orb shine, meaning waking John will have to return to LOWAS and finally get her into the Medium. So both versions of John have a critical mission, and he’s going to be working double time. Difficult, considering only one version of John can be active at any given moment. I am excited, though, to see John take over from Jade as the character whose two versions are alternately active in the story and doing important jobs; I think that’ll be one of the big shifts in Act 5.

Finally, there’s a very smooth transition into the second recap, via another cloud John sees in the sky. Like the bunny and the queen’s ring, the fourth wall’s journey is wrapped up. Grandpa stole the wall from Jack at some point during his adventures in the Medium, because he’s always collecting ‘trophies’ from his travels, including things he has no right to (for example, his collection of mummies) – and in this case, he wanted to experiment with its powers. ‘Treasure hunter’ and ‘scientist’ are both in Jade’s long list of Grandpa’s ‘occupations’. Jade plays with this wall and tries to copy its design, but is unable to get it to work (p.790), because as the fourth wall, its power exists outside of Skaia (the source of her talents) and outside the story itself. But its presence in her house explains why Jade is closer to the fourth wall than other characters, and has some ability to communicate with the player – for example, letting them play with her modus (p.808-12). Neat. ‘chalk another riddle up in the solved column’, as Rose would say (p.1858).

Final question: has Grandpa communicated with AH, and what does that mean if he has?

Ok so we DO actually have some stuff to announce this time! Nothing that Most Of You will ever encounter, but stuff!

Over in THE DISCORD, the lovely Hex entered a CODING FUGE STATE in response to bandodgers on Dreambubble and, in about a weeks' time, crafted into being a few new COOL MOD FEATURES AND STUFF that will be transferred over to Newparp when that bad bitch is done cooking.

To start: the live searches menu!

(The IP and the code have both been edited and are fake as hell, don't worry)

Mods will now be able to view all currently-happening searches plus all searches that happened over the last hour, with live updates keeping us abreast. We can also hit that funny lil yellow button to TAKE YOUR SOUL, changing your search parameters to only connect to a mod, who will then yell at you.

This has also allowed us objective knowledge that yeah, all those searches yall get that throw you into a chat with a character you don't have checkmarked? That's just DB being a rickety old lady that's full of glitches and suffering the madness of age.

These new features have allowed us to UNBAN VPNs AND REIGONAL PROVIDERS as we can now functionally shadowban you and you can't dodge it for secret code reasons I don't understand. We had someone breaking the no ageplay rule openly relent and say they were gonna leave after three hours staring at the spirograph, this is a huge W.

Just like the fact that Dreambubble now has a typing indicator on the chatbar. Everyone say thank you hex!

To proceed: Modchecking

Dreambubble, and by extension newparp, will be able to detect whether you're using a modded character and allow you to filter based off whether someone is modded or not, seen below:

I think this is neat! More userside curation. You can't even turn off modifier detection, its automatic. So if you think someone is dodging, DB is probably just being old.

In the background, Hex has been spending their time tinkering away with the DB/Parp databases. The point of this is to make the data within (all your delicious delicious chats and characters) easier for other database frameworks to work with by standardizing the schemas. As it stands both of these are overwhelmingly reliant on redis, so having more wiggle room on this can literally only be a good thing.

In other news: Dev will likely slow down a bit at some point in the next two months due to some life stuff with Hex that isn't my place to disclose. Just keeping y'all in the loop on that.

⦬ 1-, 2-, and 3-point perspective

Three pairs of new tools provide ways to easily sketch drawings in Tux Paint using 1-, 2-, and 3-point perspective, as well as adjusting the different perspectives' vanishing points. The drawing tools are similar to the Line tool, except only certain angles are possible, based on the position of the line relative to the vanishing points. For example, in 1- and 2-point perspective, lines may be drawn vertically and horizontally, but diagonally they must always be angled toward or away from the vanishing point(s).

🧊Isometric, Dimetric, Trimetric, and Oblique

Another new set of tools provide ways to sketch drawings in an isometric projection, plus two other orthographic projections, dimetric and trimetric, as well as oblique. For the latter three, it's possible to adjust various drawing angles that each tool allows.

🟒Epitrochoid and Hypotrochoid

Two new tools have been added that draw "centered trochoid" curves — patterns created when one circle rolls around the inside or outside of another circle. The resulting shapes are similar to those created by devices such as the Spirograph. The radii of both circles, plus the position of the virtual pen relative to the moving circle, may all be adjusted.

A “Stupid” Slumber Party

Summary: Jeff and Sumo find themselves indulging in some slumber party fun while Clarence is away. However, Sumo may be a bit too ticklish for one certain activity.

Author’s Note: The slumber party episode of Clarence gave me so many fic ideas for Jeff and Sumo! Hope you guys enjoy this little fic! Gotta of course tag @fluffleetoast 💖 @madhippiekisser

With Clarence gone at “that stupid slumber party,” as Sumo liked to call it, Jeff and Sumo were left to entertain themselves. They tried Spirographs, board games, even pretending to be Clarence to try and figure out something to do. But nothing seemed to work. All the two had accomplished were awkward silences and random outbursts. They sat on Jeff’s bed wondering what to do next.

“I bet Clarence is having soooo much fun~” Sumo suddenly commented, adding a little hand gesture which made Jeff crack a smile.

“Yeah! Baking cookies and doing each others nails.” Jeff pretended to look at his newly painted nails. “Having pillow fights.” Jeff softly hit Sumo with a pillow and giggled in a high pitched voice.

This caused Sumo to giggle along with him and soon the two were just laughing. Sumo decided that maybe a pillow fight wasn’t such a bad idea. He grabbed the pillow and whacked Jeff in the side.

Jeff seemed a little surprised at first, staring at Sumo’s smiling face for a sec before grabbing the other pillow and hitting him back. The room was filled with giggles and feathers as the two battled with their fluffy weapons.

“Okahay! Okay! I gihive!” Jeff surrendered when Sumo managed to snag both pillows. They even read some teen magazines that Jeff’s moms used to own when they were younger. And he couldn’t lie; the quizzes and articles were actually pretty interesting and funny. Sumo even finding his eyes glued to the pages.

While reading, Jeff came across a page about manicures and pedicures. He never really had anything against painting his nails despite his comment from earlier. In fact, he’s even had mani/pedi nights with his moms multiple times. He actually found the process quite enjoyable. The fun colors and designs, as well as the intricacy and detail work, gave his brain something to focus on. His moms were impressed with how great Jeff was at not making a mess too.

“Hey, would you wanna try painting our nails.” Jeff stammered, unsure of how Sumo would respond. Sumo seemed a bit weary at first. “Uhh- isn’t that girly stuff?” He set his magazine down.

“Well, I guess girls are usually the ones to do this kind of thing. But it’s actually pretty fun. Plus, you and Clarence painted your nails black that one time.” Sumo smiled at the memory Jeff recalled. “Yeah I remember. I mean, what else is there to do right?” Sumo shrugged.

Jeff internally jumped with joy. It was something he didn’t like others knowing he enjoyed so much. And being able to share something like that with a close friend was special. Jeff went to his mother’s bathroom and grabbed the basket of nail polish and tools. He instructed Sumo to sit on the ground while he started working.

He first started with filling his nails, much to Sumo’s dismay, complaining it felt weird. But soon it was time for the actual nail polish. Sumo picked out a dark green color, saying it reminded him of a swamp his family goes to to catch craw daddies. Jeff cringed at the thought of walking through a gross swamp, but complimented his choice nonetheless.

They chatted and told stories while Jeff carefully painted each individual nail. Being sure to wipe off any that got on Sumo’s skin. Sumo intentionally moved his hand at one point and got a big streak across his hand. To which Jeff scolded him and only made Sumo laugh. He promised not to move again though. And he didn’t. He liked the attention Jeff was giving him. Even better yet, he liked the way it looked when it was done.

“There. All finished.” Jeff twisted the cap back on the nail polish and admired his work with a proud smile. “That color looks really good on you, Sumo.” Jeff complimented.

“Oh, you think so?” Sumo smiled, imitating the way Jeff mimicked people looking at their nails earlier. “How long does it take to dry?”

“I’d say a good ten to fifteen minutes. In the meantime, I could paint your toe nails if you wanted to.” Sumo suddenly got kind of nervous. He’s never painted his toes nails. Let alone have someone else do it. But he was having fun, and Jeff looked like he really wanted to. “I mean, sure. How about… that color.” He pointed to the bright red nail polish sitting at the top of the pile.

“Ooh nice! That’s one of my mom’s favorites. And don’t you dare kick me. If I get nail polish on the carpet I’m dead.” Jeff grabbed the nail polish and shook it to get it ready. Sumo chuckled. “I’ll try not to.” Jeff glared at him. “Okay okay I won’t I promise.”

Sumo took off his socks and set his feet on the pillow Jeff placed down for him. Jeff offered Sumo a teddy bear to hold since sometimes Sumo tends to fidget. Sumo took the bear and held it against his chest.

“Okay, now put these cotton swabs between your toes so they don’t touch while I’m painting them. It helps the person doing the nails not make mistakes.” Jeff handed them to Sumo and waited till he was done.

Sumo sat back against the bed and relaxed. Jeff opened the bright red polish and reached out to hold Sumo’s foot to steady it. Sumo almost jolted at the touch. Why did he have to be so sensitive?! He internally yelled at himself to stay still and not make a sound.

“I wonder if Clarence would ever let me paint his nails. Maybe you can paint mine next, although I think you’d make a mess. No offense Sumo- Hey, you okay?” Jeff noticed Sumo gripping the Teddy Bear and a slight flush of pink along his cheeks. Sumo looked up and got a knot in his throat. If Jeff found out about how ticklish he was he was doomed. Jeff wasn’t the most touchy person in the world, but he’d take advantage of his weakness whenever given the opportunity.

“Y-Yeah I’m fine. The polish is just a little cold.” Sumo lied. His hands slightly loosening their grip on the stuffed animal. Jeff shrugged and commented on how he knows it can be a bit cold at first and that he’ll get used to it. But to Sumo, he couldn’t focus on anything except for the tickly touch of the small brush and Jeff’s fingers holding onto his sole.

Everything in him was telling him to move and run away. But he was stuck. If he moved, he could knock the bottle over or even worse, get some on his feet to which he’d have to scrub off. Which even tickled doing himself from past experience with mud.

The sensations got worse with each toe down the line. He barely managed to not move during the second, but the third ultimately ended up breaking him. Jeff gently moved his hand to hold onto Sumo’s toes and start painting. Sumo squealed and attempted to pull his foot back. His face going down to hide against the teddy bear.

“Sumo, did you just squeal?” Jeff looked up confused. Sumo kept his head down, fear of his face being even more flushed.

“No! Of course not. I just… sneezed- Yeah I sneezed.” Sumo hoped Jeff would believe him. Oh who was he kidding who sneezes like that?!

“That didn’t sound like a sneeze. Do you have a cut or something? The polish can burn if it gets into an open wound so-“ Jeff once again was taken aback by Sumo letting out a high pitched noise when Jeff grabbed his toes and ran his finger along them looking for cuts. It wasn’t till Sumo looked up slightly that he saw the blush and it clicked. A smirk grew on his face. A plan hatching in his mind.

“Bless you.” He said, making it clear to Sumo that he was falling for his lie. At least, that’s what he wanted Sumo to think. “Oh uh, thank you.“ Sumo couldn’t believe Jeff fell for it. He thought he was smarter than that, but he was glad it seemed to work.

“For the last couple nails, I’m gonna need to adjust my hold.” Jeff kept himself from smiling in fear of Sumo catching onto his plan. Jeff turned around and grabbed his ankle into a headlock. Why did he need to use a headlock with painting nails? Sumo’s eyes widened with realization.

“Hey uh, I don’t really think- GAH!” Sumo yelped when he was pulled so he now laying on the ground. Jeff still had his ankle locked in place. His eyes widened when he saw Jeff look back and smirk. “I didn’t know you were ticklish Sumo.” Sumo gulped. Jeff wouldn’t-

“I- I’m not. I don’t know what you’re- hehehehey! Quihihit it!” Sumo started giggling when Jeff wiggled his fingers against his foot. He tried kicking, but Jeff was stronger than he looked.

“Well that didn’t last long.” Jeff commented at the immediate giggles he received. Sumo just squeezed the plushie tighter to his chest while trying even harder to pull at his legs.

“Jeheheff! Stahahahahahap!” But he didn’t. He kept going. Jeff started scratching along the arch of his foot and couldn’t help but chuckled at the high pitched noises it got. Jeff’s fingers were sending tickly electricity up Sumo’s legs with each poke and scribble.

Sumo started whacking Jeff’s back with the teddy bear, so much so that he managed to catch Jeff off guard with a whack to his side causing Jeff to fall over.

Sumo quickly pulled his legs to his chest, the stuffed bear muffling his leftover giggles. Jeff recovered from his small hit and turned around to face his friend. Anyone would agree that it was actually pretty adorable. Sumo, the little gremlin that he is, never really gets flustered like this. Jeff liked this look on him. For once, Jeff was going to be the one making Sumo beg through giggles instead of Clarence and Sumo teaming up to do the same to him. He’s been the victim of too many tickle attacks from that duo.

“Don’t think I’m done with you yet, Sumo. This is for all the times you helped Clarence tickle me!” Jeff was of course being playful as he said this. Bringing his hands up and wiggling his fingers. Sumo tried throwing the bear at Jeff, but only succeeded in losing his only weapon and shield.

“Noho! Jeff this isn’t fahair!” Sumo put his hands up to try and grab at Jeff’s hands. Jeff knew Sumo could get away at any point. He was strong and crazy enough to get out of pretty much any situation he didn’t want to be in. That being said, Jeff knew Sumo was having as much fun as he was. So that’s why he didn’t feel any remorse when he suddenly pounced and started squeezing Sumo’s sides.

“JEHEHEHEHEHEFF! GEHET OHOHOHOFF!” Sumo’s arms slammed down to his sides. His legs kicked lightly and he desperately tried to grab at the offending hands. He couldn’t lie to himself that he wasn’t having fun though. Roughhousing like this was something he loved to do, especially with his close friends.

“No way I’m still getting my revenge. Although I don’t think you mind it all that much.” Jeff teased while moving his hands to Jeff’s stomach. Forming his one hand into a claw while the other squeezed at his lower side.

“GAHAHAD! SHUHUHUT UHUHUP! *snort* NOHOHAHAHAHAHA!” Sumo used one hand to cover his now blushing face as the other tried to block his midriff.

“Oho my gosh what was that?! I didn’t know you snorted when you laughed, Sumo!” Jeff was treating this like an experiment than revenge. Which little spot could make his friend let out a snort or where would make Sumo get lost in giggles?

“AHAHAHAHA! IHIHI *snort* DOHOHN’T!” Sumo tried turning to the side to cover his stomach. That only made Jeff squeeze the new area that faced him and Sumo turn back over. This little game went on for a little bit before Jeff grabbed at Sumo’s hips to keep him still.

“GAHH! JEHEHEFF! NAHAHAT THEHEHERE!” Sumo sacrificed Jeff seeing his flushed face to grab onto his wrists, only holding on and not pulling, however.

“Not here you say? How come? Does it tickle~” Jeff found himself getting lost in the role. He understood why Clarence and Sumo tickled each other all the time and even went after him. It was fun. He continued to squeeze and knead into the newly discovered tickle spot. For Sumo, it was a spot his older brothers abused a lot when he got on their nerves.

Sumo started kicking his legs at Jeff. Even landing a good hit to the others knee. “Hehey watch it!” Jeff exclaimed reaching to squeeze right above Sumo’s kneecap. This caused a shrill squeal to escape from Sumo’s lips. Jeff had to pull his hands away to cover his ears for a moment. Sumo breathed deeply and wrapped his arms around his waist.

“You jeherk! Thahat was soho mehehean!” Sumo spoke through his leftover giggles. His arms rising and falling with his chest. A wide smile and a little pink still spread across his face. Jeff chuckled and sat next to Sumo against the bed.

“Oh please. That was me being nice. Just be glad I didn’t go for your neck.” Jeff punctuated his sentence with a scribble to the back of Sumo’s neck. Sumo immediately whipped around and grabbed Jeff’s hand with both of his.

“Nahat the neheck or you’re aha dead mahan!” Sumo’s expression was one of pure joy. He couldn’t stop the giggles or little butterflies that flapped in his stomach. Jeff appreciated these moments between the two. They could have their differences, but at the end of the day they’re best friends who have fun together.

“Don’t worry I’m done. For now at least.” Jeff helped Sumo sit up. He grabbed the teddy bear and handed it back to Sumo who gladly accepted and hugged it. There was a moment of silence before Sumo spoke up.

“So I guess I’m too ticklish for a pedicure then.” Sumo motioned to the one foot that only had three nails painted. Jeff laughed and grabbed the bottle of nail polish.

“I could always finish. No full on tickles this time I promise. But you don’t have to hold in your laughter now.” Jeff went to sit back in front of Sumo. Sumo nodded and agreed. He did want to know what it looked like finished after all. So Jeff continued to paint Sumo’s toes. A few giggles filling the silence from both parties.

Once he was done and the polish was dry, Sumo admired Jeff’s work. He was impressed. The color actually looked really nice and he loved the way the glitter shimmered in the light. “Dang, Jeff! It looks amazing!” Sumo spun in a circle to further show his appreciation. And maybe because inside he was feeling really beautiful.

“No problem. Like I said, I’ve gotten plenty of practice with my moms. They were never as ticklish as you though.” He gave Sumo a quick poke to his side. Sumo jumped and smacked Jeff’s hand. Before the two knew it, they were dancing to Bro Down and weren’t even worried about what Clarence would do. They didn’t need to. They had each other, and that was enough.

First of all, Explore by Micheal Guy Bowman is a great track. Secouldny, PM is here!!!!!! AR soon.. :DD. As usual i didn't pay attention to them, so I will properly engage with them this time :3. Dave’s flashes are coming soon which I am really excited for aswell. Dad and Mom both get moments here as well, Dad Egbert being a gentlemanly badass, i love him so, aswell the reveal that Mom Lalonde knows more than we thought, having the Skaianet Spirograph near her house and opening a gate to help Rose along her journey, ( which is the start of the arc of what Rose will learn later on. ( Most of this is just my interpretation really btw... ) Mom Lalonde secretly knew what Rose’s destiny was and acted like a ditzy wino to cope. She was patient with her Rose, genuinely loving her in her own way despite her flaws. 12. “You are the most infuriating person I have ever known.”

Percy hadn't meant to mention to Jason very casually over text that he'd just gotten home from dropping Annabeth, Piper and Will off at the airport. He was texting too many people at once – his mom, Hazel, Leo, Annabeth – when Jason's message had come in. Too late to backpedal and not wanting to outright lie to Jason, Percy had explained the situation with Piper's family as delicately as possible.

Not an hour later Jason was pounding on the apartment door to be let in. When Percy opened it he found Jason wild eyed, pale, a little sweaty and struggling to catch his breath on the other side.

"Did you run here?" Percy asked, stepping aside to allow Jason in.

Jason shook his head, heading straight for the couch to collapse onto it. He carried a tie in hand, the top three buttons of his collar undone. "Traffic was backed up bad, so I had my driver let me out a few blocks away."

"And ran from there," Percy concluded, letting out a heavy sigh.

"I think I need to go to Malibu," Jason replied, his breathing slowly beginning to even out, but the other signs of stress not fading.

"That might be the worst idea you've ever had," Percy said as he took a seat in one of the living room's arm chairs, "and you bought that tie."

Lifting the tie in question – a blue thing with a flower like pattern that reminded Percy of those spirograph things kids at school always had but he could never figure out how to use – Jason frowned. "I like this tie."

"Exactly," Percy agreed. “It’s stupid.”

"Distracting me isn't going to work," Jason said a second later, but Percy thought a couple more comments like that and it just might. Percy didn't have time for distractions, though, because Jason pulled out his phone. "Do you think it's too late to catch a flight?"

"They caught the last one out tonight and that was like two hours ago, so yeah," Percy told him, mind working to figure out how he could talk Jason out of this monumentally bad idea.

Despite Percy telling him there were no more flights out that night, Jason's fingers were still flying across his phone screen. "I think the family jet is at LaGuardia right now. They could probably have it ready in an hour or two."

"You are the most infuriating person I have ever known," Percy said flatly, both because Jason was considering this at all and because he could so casually say things like, the family jet is at LaGuardia. "Okay, think about it this way – it's going to take you two hours to get the plane ready, then like six hours of flight time to LA. That's eight hours total, plus however long it takes you to get to the hospital from LAX."

"Yeah, which means I need to leave now so I can get there in time if she needs me," Jason insisted.

"Or," Percy pushed, "in eight hours you'll get there and it'll be weird because everyone is fine and now you've made the birth of her sister really awkward for her."

The possibility of making things worse got through to Jason, who stopped and slouched back into the couch, staring blankly ahead. Percy watched as Jason seemed to register where he was in real time, taking in his surroundings, the panic in his expression transforming into something more like longing. “I just feel like I should be with her right now.”

Percy understood Jason's desperation, he really did. If it were Annabeth going through something like this, Percy would have moved heaven and earth to get to her, probably even if they had (God forbid, he hated even thinking the words) broken up. That didn't mean it wouldn't be a terrible idea if he were the one doing it. Piper already had the floodgates thrown open on her emotions that night, on top of the general instability she'd been suffering since graduation. Adding Jason to the equation would just complicate things for her that much further. Maybe it would be a good complication, but it might also be a terrible one, and that didn't feel like a risk they should be taking.

“Believe me, I begged them to let me go, too. I get it,” Percy said, trying to pour his understanding into the words. They both knew he could only marginally understand what Jason was going through, but he hoped the sentiment still held. “Let’s wait until we hear from them. If something goes wrong, we’ll head out together – either on your stupid jet or the first flight in the morning.”

“Is it okay if I crash here until then?” Jason asked, the yearning lilt to his voice matching the longing in his eyes.

That longing was something Percy understood, too. Annabeth and Piper’s apartment had become kind of a second (maybe third would be more accurate) home over the last few months. There was a reason Percy had gone there, rather than back to the brownstone, after dropping the girls and Will off at the airport. Being there calmed him. That apartment was a respite from the world, every nook and cranny filled with the love Annabeth and Piper had for each other, contagious and healing. It must have been the same for Jason.

“Sure,” Percy agreed, figuring neither of the girls would mind him making that executive decision in their absence. “You had dinner yet? I’m hungry.”

Homespork Act 3: Insane Mindscrew Haymakers (Part 3)

FAILURE ARTIST: We cut to PM, WV, and AR in the far but not that far future. WV is trying to obey the letter’s direction to give the package to PM but AR keeps shooting. Yet WV and PM take cover behind a rock and WV is able to complete the task. The letter calls PM “Miss Mail Lady” so we now have a gender.

Back to Dream Jade. She flies to another golden tower and peers in on John sleeping. This bedroom is also defaced like his one in the waking world, plus there’s a creepy harlequin doll next to him. She isn’t sure if he got her present or if she even sent it, so she decides she’ll ask later.

CHEL: Dream John is fitfully asleep, but Jade intends to let him wake up on his own. Here, it’s established that Dream Jade does not know everything waking Jade does, as she decides she needs a system to remind her of things, which in the waking world she has (remember the COLORFUL REMINDERS).

The moon on which the city is now revealed to be placed is moving close to Skaia, the gargantuan sphere of cloudy blue sky mentioned by Nannasprite as the crucible of creation. Apparently it’s not safe to be outside during the “eclipse”, so Jade heads back to her tower.

FAILURE ARTIST: We cut to John alchemizing a bunch of stuff, some useful and some never to appear again. One of these things is a Cosbytop computer and that hasn’t aged well. John feels like it’s both his birthday and Christmas and though he thinks that’s impossible these pages came out a few days before Christmas. This fourth wall wink and nod comes up during another alchemizing frenzy.

CHEL: He contemplates a “1980s time-lapse montage” but instead we have to sit through him alchemising everything item by item.

GET ON WITH IT!: 12

Though he does come up with some useful stuff, including a rather snappy suit. By combining his glasses with the PDA he gets hands-free internet, and the sledgehammer, telescope, and Sassacre book together create the TELESCOPIC SASSACRUSHER, an extremely powerful weapon which unfortunately he can’t lift. Nannasprite’s ectoplasm and the gushers make healing candies, and ectoplasm, the fake arms, and the PDA solve the giant hammer problem by making REMOTE GHOST GAUNTLETS. One of the funnier items is a steam-iron-hammer he calls the WRINKLEFUCKER.

Dave, meanwhile, is STILL strifing with Bro, who apparently doesn’t notice or doesn’t care about the fact that the city is being flattened by meteors around them. Not doing a good job of showing “yes, this fight should be taken seriously”.

TIER: Neither does Dave for that matter, fucks given remains at a cool absolute zero on this roof.

GET ON WITH IT!: 13 HURRY UP AND DO NOTHING: 6

CHEL: At least it’s captioned FINAL ROUND now. Surrounded by watching crows, Dave hurls himself at Bro, and their collision results in the snapping of Dave’s sword, the bisection of Lil Cal (hooray!) and, somehow, the splitting of the picture of the record on Dave’s T-shirt; not cutting the cloth, turning the picture of a whole record into one of a broken record, which it will remain for the rest of its time in the story. Lots of analysis has been done by fans about how this represents Bro’s abuse shattering Dave’s true inner self, but in the context, it just looks like even sillier cartoon physics than we already had, if one even notices it (in the rush of visuals it’s easy to miss the first time round). It probably doesn’t help that Bro never actually says anything (nor do either of the other living adults), so we don’t really know what his thoughts on the matter are.

ARE YOU TRYING TO BE FUNNY?: 12

Dave goes flying, rolling and skidding across the roof, landing in a rather battered-looking heap but with no serious harm done, and Bro chucks the game discs at him and… flies off on a hoverboard which I guess he has? Yet again, not adding to a serious tone here. Are hoverboards normal in this universe? Like the sylladexes, it was never established. Dave messages John, matter-of-factly telling him “bro just kicked my ass”. It’s still unclear how literal John thinks this ass-kicking is.

BRIGHT: This is apparently a universe in which some form of combat with one’s guardian is apparently routine, so John might well be thinking of Dave’s strifes with Bro as just a more intense version of a normal practice. On the other hand, by that same token, there’s nothing at this stage to say it isn’t just a more intense version of a normal practice. In fact, both John’s and Dave’s reactions suggest this is the case.

The problem really comes later on. If Dave’s situation is going to be taken seriously, then so should everyone else’s. Right now, although there are suggestions that all is not well, the tone of the text takes none of these situations seriously. It keeps everyone on a more even footing.

CHEL: Back on the golden moon, the eclipse is happening; during same, the moon and Jade’s tower thereupon, which are chained to the planet, swing right inside Skaia, surrounding it with clouds. On the surface of the clouds, we see images of events which happened earlier, including John’s house in the Medium, Rose’s house aflame, the tree in the desert, and the meteors falling on Dave’s city. This, we gather, is from where Jade obtains her mysterious information!

Dream Jade types messages to John, while the Dreambot types them out on a keyboard in the real world so he can actually get them. We proceed to see the same conversation about the package and SBurb we saw when Jade was first introduced, but this time I think a recap of it is actually pretty useful, especially the reference to the explosion. What happens is a little hard to parse, but as far as I can make out, a cloud shows a vision of a meteor emerging from a space portal, and the meteor actually emerges from the vision, becoming a cloud in the process. Said cloud-meteor then passes into a vision of Jade’s island when the volcano was still active and strikes down as the real meteor did in that time period. Jade, in her tower, hears it; I guess this is why it’s not safe to go outside during the eclipse?

In the volcano vision, we pull into a close-up shot of the lava-filled crater beneath the volcano, and a very familiar featureless canine head starts to emerge from it. Creepy.

Jade leaves the tower to check, and finds a vision of the lava with a blossom-like lit-up spirograph emerging from it, but when she tries to look, vision-Bec blocks her view of it, as the real Bec flies back and forth in front of the Dreambot. She messages John again, saying Bec doesn’t want her to go near the meteor crash site.

In John’s dream tower, the bed is empty; Dream John is now hovering outside it, eyes firmly shut. Jade sees him and drifts toward him, while John’s eyes slowly open. (This bit fuelled a fair amount of shipping at the time.) We see again the shaped clouds and the slowly approaching silhouette of Jade, revealing this to be the time when John fell asleep earlier, and at the exact same moment, real Jade and real John awake.

Again, we have a repeated conversation, this one being the one where Jade implores John to wake up. Now we know what she meant! Again, I think recapping this is reasonable, but maybe it could have been trimmed down so we just got the important points? That should have been done with all the repeat convos, really.

TIER: Personally speaking the little blurbs of repeated conversation shown during the flash would've gotten the point across without having to completely rehash the conversations.

With Jade awake properly, we get another convo rehash (now with proper context from both sides). Jade then consults her COLORFUL REMINDERS, as the visions of past and future events visible in the clouds as she sleeps can get very confusing very fast and the things help her put everything into usable info! With is fitting because dreams are trippy and easily forgotten. Jade notes two things: that this time there wasn't that much of future being shown, and that this is the first time that her dog guardian Bec has shown up a dream.

Bec has apparently never let Jade wander into the weird temple that is such a strange landmark of her island, but with the overpowered pooch taking a nap at the feet of his master's corpse, this is a good a time as any to try and pull one over him!

As Jade zip lines towards the temple and Rose continues construction on John's house, we cut back to Dave in the aftermath of the strife.

Dave is slightly saddened by poor Cal's “unfortunate” bisection (personally I was hollering because fuck that thing Jesus). His strife kind has also been turned into a ½ bladekind, courtesy of Bro fucking up his shit blade. Fucking rude man.

BRIGHT: Fighting with half a sword never seems to��hinder Dave, but it still seems a silly thing to do when Bro quite possibly knew Dave was headed into heavy combat. It’s funny at the time though!

FAILURE ARTIST: When I first read Homestuck, I was sad Bro didn’t seem to care about Lil Cal, but with later revelations...would be better if that puppet never existed.

TIER: Dave attempts to grab the beta that he worked so hard for, but wouldn't ya know it his dang inventory is all filled up. Mostly with useless crap, as Dave admits as well. After a quick setup change for his modus, Dave finally has the beta! Congrats!!

CHEL: *looks pointedly at GET ON WITH IT count*

TIER: While Dave attempts to pester her, Rose has finished building up John's house, which marks the end of how much more she can help John as his server player. There's not much else to do for her till Dave shows up. She's also nearly done with John's gift, that'll show him that Rose is the God King of, and I am quoting right now “facetious sentimental gestures”. That's a peculiar and slightly worrying sentiment to have. What an adorably wordy yet cheeky little goth.

With that, we jump back a few months into the past, when it was Rose's 13th birthday. She's opening a package from John (signed under his old handle ghostyTrickster) containing the gift of knitting stuff (yarn and knitting needles) and a very dorky yet endearing letter from the blue boy. What a goof.

Rose is then pestered by one of the trollslum inhabitants, this one by the name of grimAuxiliatrix! They type Like This, And I Think It's Very Neat. Also quite verbose this one. Like personally I kinda need to carefully read and reread their words to get what the fuck they're trying to get to. In this case, it's politely bitching about humans while weird time related fuckery gets explicitly name dropped. Mainly the weird situation that is the trolls being/not being from the future. It's as confusing as it sounds.

CHEL: I think here’s the first indication that the trolls aren’t just other humans. Meanwhile, notice that one of the names in the Trollslum is “centaursTesticle”. Lovely. That character will, as the handle suggests, be the source of a LOT of CALL CPA PLEASE points. But anyway.

GA: No We Arent From "The Future" GA: But We Are All Already In Agreement That You Dont Get It And Never Will TT: I thought you said we spoke in the future. GA: We Did GA: Your Future GA: For Me It Was Only A Couple Minutes Ago TT: I understand. TT: You exist in some temporal stratum through which you have communication access to various points of my timeline. TT: It's not that complicated.

TIER: While that confusing thing keeps happening, we jump on over to a younger Dave, whole record shirt and dumb not-Kamina anime glasses wearing. He too is opening a birthday gift, which consists of his iconic aviators and a letter as well. The letter is just as endearing as the one John sent to Rose. Might just be my bias talking concerning how much John is undoubtedly and unchallenged my favorite character overall.

CHEL: I think so too, but I’m still giving him a point for him telling Dave his “gay butt stinks”, even though he is a twelve-year-old boy - it never gets called out or presented as bad that the kids say -ism-based insults until near the end, and that part has its own problems which we’ll get to then. The rest of it’s cute though.

CLOCKWORK PROBLEMATYKKS: 11

I’d like to bring up another webcomic which is known for its incredibly offensive humour; R. K. Milholland’s Something Positive. Specifically, I’d like to contrast the offensive humour of it with the offensive humour of Homestuck. In S*P, the point of the offensive humour is that the characters saying or doing the offensive thing are horrible people who should not be emulated, and even they disapprove strongly of homophobic/racist insults. Here is one of the tamer examples, from 2003 (so later comics have no excuse). Please note the character saying all this is both very drunk and very frustrated by having read a lot of terrible writing at the time, and his decision to do this comes back to bite him later.

In contrast, the point of Homestuck’s offensive jokes seems to be that either offensive things are inherently funny or the writer doesn’t realise why they’re offensive.

John tells Dave he thinks he needs to get out of his brother’s shadow, showing no concern for Dave’s actual wellbeing; more evidence that either they don’t know about the strifes or don’t care. The gift John has given is the glasses worn by Ben Stiller, which John suggests could replace Dave’s current anime shades. John worries that they’re “sort of a shitty present”, which again makes me wonder about the Egberts’ financial status - we weren’t able to find an actual figure for them but those things would cost thousands, so what the hell makes him call them “shitty”? How much did Hussie think movie memorabilia cost? Name of the count aside, we’re using it for when their economic statuses are weird in general, so here we go again:

WHITE SBURB POSTMODERNISM: 8

TIER: Dave too is dealing with a trollslum inhabitant, this one by the name of adiosToreador. It's around here that the trolls typing starts to get head tilt worthy. As Dave so eloquently puts it, toreador types like a tool. I mean, lOOK AT THIS, lOOK ME IN THE EYES, aND TELL ME THIS AIN'T RIDICULOUS.

CHEL: AT opens by telling Dave he’s awful, and Dave responds with frustration at having to deal with the trolls yet again. He complains that he’s “wasting good material on you guys” and that there’s no substance to their trolling; he also mentions one of them thinking he was a girl, which I think is the original source of the fandom’s popular female-to-male transgender Dave headcanon.

FAILURE ARTIST: I think it’s just that Dave is a popular character.

CHEL: I don’t know, it started well before the fandom started getting really enthusiastic about assigning identities to everyone, from what I saw, but maybe.

TIER: My two cents concerning this matter is that it's probably a combination of the two. Dave seems to resonate quite well with a great majority of the fans, so from what I've seen they more readily project onto him.

AT: i KNOW WHAT YOU'VE DONE, AT: oR WILL DO, aCTUALLY, AT: iT'S THE MOST AWFUL THING, tHE WORST YOU CAN EVER DO,

CHEL: The readers immediately start wondering what this thing is, but Dave is unconcerned, and immediately accuses AT of perving on him. Here is where the CALL CPA PLEASE count really starts to ramp up, because on one hand, yes it’s hilarious to watch the tables being turned, but on the other, this coming out of a boy who literally just turned thirteen that day is… uncomfortable for a lot of adult readers, especially since we know his home has obscene material lying around all over it and as mentioned before that can really mess up a kid, even if Bro was not in fact putting him in his movies directly.

Anyway, I’m giving one CPA point for each of those elaborate descriptions. AT, perturbed, announces his intention to leave, but Dave continues.

FAILURE ARTIST: Yeah, that’s also a thing. But I’d say it counts as one big joke.

CHEL: Does the Vietnam joke count as a separate one? I’m not sure what the general attitude to those is since about half of 20th-century British comedy revolves around WW2 jokes and no one minds those.

CHEL: All the counts aside, I can see what Hussie was going for and the general idea’s still amusing, culminating in one of the funniest bits in the comic when all this leads up to adiosToreador [AT] blocked turntechGodhead [TG] - I think we’ve all wanted to be Dave here. I’m fully aware that this sequence was meant to be somewhat uncomfortable, but given that Hussie later tries to tell us that Dave’s home life scarred him for real, yet he presented this as funny, it adds to the general feeling of Hussie berating the reader for laughing at the comedy. I think he was just trying to pander to the woke side of the fanbase with that, but we’ll get to it when we get there.

Closer to present time, Jade puts her gift to John on top of the monument. The gift disappears, just as Jade planned. Back in the future, PM looks at her drawing showing where she’s supposed to go. The drawing seems to be inaccurate until the tower is shot down. It turns out AR accidentally launched a rocket at it. AR tries again to hit the criminals but is distracted by PM’s beauty. Instead, AR shoots the mobile station. WV throws a can of Tab and PM grabs the package in a clever callback to SBaHJ’s sock ruse comic.

PM gets the package to the Appearifier and Sendifies it into Jade’s toddlerhood, back when Grandpa was alive and shooting butterflies. Inside the package is a letter from John, a too-big t-shirt with a blue ghost on it, and pumpkin seeds. So we have the root of Jade’s friendship with John and the others and her interest in gardening. That’s a very elaborate time loop.

CHEL: Get used to elaborate time loops. Anyway, the letter’s painfully adorable again. John thanks Jade for her years of friendship and for being the reason he met Rose and Dave. He gave Jade pumpkin seeds because future Jade had been upset that her pumpkins kept disappearing so he wanted to help her grow more. Unfortunately his declaration that three people is “almost like, TOO MUCH FRIENDSHIP” was cute at first glance, but given how he has no contact with anyone but them that we see, it becomes a tad creepy. Did he not expect to ever have any friends, or more than one friend? The implication that Dadbert kept him locked in his room all the time is looking more and more likely!

We cut to a cartoon sound effect, WHOP, and You bear the vicious brunt of this story transition directly in the face, “you” now being Archagent Jack Noir. Jade is instructed by the prompt to “Play guitar to summon giant lily pads”, which she does, and it works… somehow? I’m not sure how that happens. Anyway, she uses the lily pads to hop over to the frog temple, finding in it a wall covered in tiny lime green glowing symbols.

Cut back to Dave, who has finally succeeded in installing the beta, and not a moment too soon as Rose’s room is now full of red light, soon to be aflame. Rose is calm enough to join Dave in a SBaHJ joke, and we go into the act-ending animation, [S] Enter.

Dave dramatically sips his fortunately-really-apple-juice and draws cartoons as the game loads, while Rose plays with Vodka Mutini and Jade scurries through the temple. For clarity’s sake, I’ll describe each character’s actions in a separate paragraph.

Rose leaps out over the drop, successfully catches it, and is in turn caught by a long purple tentacle....

Flaming whirlwinds approach the house; Rose swings the bottle to shatter it, and the meteor lands.

In the temple, we see an enormous flower atop another countdown device, noting four-and-a-half minutes till disaster, but Jade suddenly falls asleep again, waking up with only nineteen seconds to go. Unlike John randomly falling asleep mid-battle, this has been happening often enough to seem to be a legitimate problem with a story-based cause. Keep an eye on that.

Dave, meanwhile, is still in his room, which is now filled with crows. He seems flustered at first, but in a later shot he’s back at his computer with a crow perched on his head, seemingly fine.

Back at John’s house, Nannasprite opens up his newer copy of Sassacre’s book and starts to inscribe the very message we read earlier, so she didn’t in fact know about it during her life. Seems odd that she’d bother doing this rather than just saying it, though, especially since when she finishes, she drops the book into the chasm, where it plummets through grey clouds, emerging over a dark-blue land scattered with tiny lights and black rivers. John, covered in oil, runs up the many stairs of his remodelled house, smashing imps left and right with single blows from the WRINKLEFUCKER and directing the SASSACRUSHER with the GHOST GAUNTLETS to take on the ogres. When he reaches the top, he slams his hammer down one last time and bounces upwards to the spirograph portal, entering whatever’s on the other side. Fade to white.

Generally, a very good flash! Exciting but doesn’t sacrifice useful information for drama, and now two characters have reached their current goals but more is still going on. Lovely music too. I think the Flash animations are one of Hussie’s greater strengths here.

FAILURE ARTIST: The animation was what drew me into Homestuck and this is a particularly good one.

CHEL: A couple of static pages wrap up the Act; we pan out from John’s house to see it and the pinnacle it’s perched on are now looming above the same dark-blue land covered with thick clouds that the book fell onto, which we now see is in fact an entire very small planet. Curtains close.

So that’s the end of Act 3! What does everyone think?

FAILURE ARTIST: It was fun seeing Jade and the Exiles but sad thinking about how underutilized they ended up. Especially poor AR.

BRIGHT: This is where the elaborate time loops really started to kick in, and I’ve gotta say, I’m not a fan. I recognise that they’re a key feature of Homestuck, but I found some of them too confusing on my first read through. (Though they do make more sense on subsequent reads.)

I think on the whole this Act is quite well paced. I really loved the bits with Jade, and a lot of nifty background info gets introduced without being infodumped.

TIER: I wasn't even aware that webcomics on the internet were a thing at this point, but I do believe that it's around here that Homestuck's popularity was starting to pick up, no? This chapter went a lot deeper into the strangeness of the game to!

FAILURE ARTIST:

Homestuck was popular but I don’t think it became a phenomenon until Act 5 when the trolls were fully introduced. Lots of people even skipped Acts 1-4 and the Intermission to get to them. I think a lot of the pre-Act 5 fans were my age (20s) while after that many were teens or tweens. Admittedly, I didn’t do much in the fandom except check the SA thread until Act 5 came around.

CHEL: I don’t think I got into it until Act 6 - I remember the first time I got further than a few pages in I gave up when the Alpha kids got introduced because it was way too complicated.

As for my thoughts on the act, well… Before, I was able to more or less chalk up the racist/sexist/fatphobic/homophobic remarks as being from the characters’ mouths (they are, after all, twelve to thirteen years old) and not the author’s, but they don’t really get called out by the narrative and Hussie has sufficiently drained my goodwill that I have to complain, and I suspect after recent events that it actually was him speaking there, if you get my meaning. Most of the dialogue is still as sweet and funny as I remember it being but those bits really taint it. Hypothetical rewrite would definitely remove those.

I’m in two minds about keeping Dave’s hurricane of euphemisms to AT for said hypothetical rewrite; on one hand, considering his home situation, it’s worrying, but on the other the whole point of the joke is to make AT uncomfortable and it’s hard to do that without making comments that would also make the reader uncomfortable. Maybe if Dave’s home life was adjusted a bit the reader would be more easily able to assume he just picked them up from Urban Dictionary.

Speaking of Dave, his storyline here is where we really start to see a thing which is a recurring problem with the comic. Namely, reliance on theme and symbolism over what is actually happening. If Hussie was indeed trying from the beginning to portray Dave’s situation as serious abuse, then he shouldn’t have chosen to represent said abuse with ridiculous cartoon physics while literally portraying Dave as unharmed onscreen. Dave’s behaviour does hint at some issues, but they’re easy to pass off as related to other things, and swords so sharp they cause printed pictures to change are not most readers’ first assumption for the cause.

Other than those, though, I think we’re still mostly fine; none of the problems are problems with the underlying structure of the story, so it wouldn’t require a huge retooling. That state of affairs will continue on for another couple of acts, but when it fails, it fails.

Re bonjour Tumblr ça fait un moment que j’ai pas écris mais l’envie est revenue. On est en pleins confinement actuellement. Avec Animal Crossing sous le bras les jours ne sont pas trop long. On sait aussi que normalement on pourra commencer à penser à sortir d’ici le 11 mai.

Je vis le confinement pas trop mal pendant une bonne partie de la journée ... mais le soir y’a toujours un moment où ça va plus ... et j’en ai marre d’attendre. j’ai envie de faire pleins de trucs mais il n’y plus de temps.

Je joue à Animal Crossing une bonne partie de la journée en pensant à ce que je pourrais faire d’autre mais le moment où j’arrête, le moment où il est temps de faire ce que je pense depuis le matin ... plus rien ... le vide

et je trouve un nouvel écran où mettre mes yeux pendant les prochaines heures ...

Here Grandpa was able to indulge his passions like never before. Due to the multiple colors of monsters, he likely explored all four planets, plus Prospit and the dark kingdom. As the Incipisphere is untethered from Earth time, of course Grandpa would visit the period of its history when it’s most exciting to be there with the most diverse lifeforms. Grandpa returned to late 20th century Earth, built hit house based on the Prospitian towers, mounted his trophies, and began raising his granddaughter.

I’ve seen a lot of speculation that Grandpa Harley is a future version of John, or that the four guardians previously played a session and Grandpa stayed behind in the Medium, etc, but I don’t think those are necessary for the story to make sense. I do like the link between John meeting his nanna, who died when he was young, and now getting to meet Jade’s grandpa who died when she was young, both of whom have interacted with his ‘inheritance’ of the Sassacre book – like John being the heir extends outside his own family (at least, outside his biological family).

After the copper giclops absconds holding the Sassacrusher and Grandpa (drawn in copper silhouette) absconds holding the Sassacre book (weird to connect the two of them like that, I know that Grandpa kills other creatures indiscriminately and without mercy but I’ve seen no evidence that the giclops is so bad).

So in the comic, past, future, John and PM are all interspersed, although John’s story stays linear, which sets some guidelines. It does make me sad that this happens in a way that takes a lot of agency from John – he doesn’t get the chance to find his dad’s car and see that the parcels are missing and try to solve the minitablet puzzle himself, he gets the command from PM soon enough to avoid that whole challenge. I think the timeline could have been played with a little more to allow John to at least reach the car before PM’s memory was prompted, and she still could have swooped in to give John a nudge in the right direction if he was struggling to solve this. John has been saved by other people a lot and it’s not satisfying if he never succeeds on his own terms.

The close ups on the minitablet make it really clear that these are stone age captchalogue cards, with the same broad function but a long time delay between ‘captchaloguing’ and possessing the item, while on Earth the technology was instant and at people’s fingertips. This fits especially well with Jade’s new fetch modus, which is interesting as the Pictionary modus was chosen through a reader poll while the minitablet system is author-created.
