Can You Hear The Thunder?
Chapter 9: Revelations
Dew realizes that maybe his feelings for Aether really do lie deeper than just a pack bond. The ghouls finally begin to prepare for the tour, getting their first experience with their instruments, and Dew gets over a fear of his.
Another bits and pieces chapter before the ghouls head out on tour (which was totally meant to start next chapter but uh… that seems unlikely.)!
Just fyi this one has a mild smut scene – if you want to skip it, just skip the whole dream sequence in italics. There’s also some light body horror in the scene with Dew and Ifrit, with a simile to teeth if you’re not good with dentist stuff (beginning at the line "The day the first spine broke free of his skin..." until "The other young ghouls...")!
Also, check out this drawing I did of the scene with Dew and Ifrit from last chapter!

With the weather continuing to improve day by day, Aether had suggested they make the most of their relative freedom with a trip to the lake. Dew had wrinkled his nose at the proposition but, buoyed along by the general excitement in the pack, made no complaint about the idea. While Aether raided the storage to find swimming trunks and sunhats, Dew filled a basket with various snacks; if he was going to spend the day next to a dark, cold body of water, he at least wanted to be eating well while doing so.
The excited atmosphere was contagious, with even Dew chatting and laughing as they poured out of the Den and down the hill to the lake. The sun overhead was warm on his skin, while the breeze blowing up from the lake made a cool contrast. All around them, the air clung to the scents of springtime; of new green shoots on the trees and early pollen drifting heavy in the wind. Far above them, birds twittered and rejoiced at spring’s arrival in their own ways.
Dew grew nervous as they made the final turn on the path down, half expecting it to be the same deep and terrifying black expanse shrouded in fog from the last time he had been there. Instead though the air was as clear as crystal, the water glinting a rich blue-green beneath the azure sky. Across the lake from where they stood, the trees thinned out and a bright green meadow stretched as far as the horizon, with no hint to where the Abbey’s ground ended and the world beyond began. With the other shoreline visible Dew could at last appreciate its beauty; it certainly wasn't as scary as he had thought before.
Mountain gasped as he saw the lake for the first time, his eyes widening to take in the sight.
“Dew!” He admonished jokingly, “You told us the lake wasn't worth seeing!”
Dew winced sheepishly, feeling slightly guilty that he had let his initial dislike of the place withhold it from the others. He didn’t get to dwell on such thoughts for long though, suddenly having to leap out of the way as Ifrit barrelled past him, tossing his mask to the ground and heading straight for the water's edge.
He was, of course, already shirtless as he sprinted in swimming trunks for the shore, showing no signs of the aversion to water that Dew had. Clearly it wasn’t a blanket fire ghoul thing. Ifrit ran straight into the water but only made it a few steps before friction with the liquid tripped him up, sending him face-first into the lake with an almighty splash. He shrieked, undignified, at the cold as steam began to rise around him from his high skin temperature.
Instinctively, Dew hopped back from the spray of water droplets, not wanting to get splashed.
“Housecat.” Mountain rolled his eyes with a grin, stripping off his own shirt in anticipation of following the fire ghoul into the lake. “Half water ghoul and you don't even like water.”
Dew silently prayed for someone to change the subject; Mountain got closer and closer to realising the truth every day. Thankfully Aether was, as always, there to answer his silent plea.
“You're sure you're fine staying on the dock?” Aether appeared behind Dew, resting a wide hand on his shoulder as he checked in with him and Zephyr for the umpteenth time. Both nodded, having already done so many times between the plan for a lake day being proposed and now.
Dew then tried to pretend to be focussed on digging for something in the bag of snacks he had brought, rather than on the quintessence ghoul as he too divested himself of his extra clothes. With his arms lifted over his head, Dew had an uninterrupted view as he stretched to untangle his horns from the cotton shirt. He already knew how broad and soft Aether was, not least from having spent a night wrapped in his arms, but now he really saw just how deliciously plush the rest of him was.
From behind a curtain of blond hair, Dew stared at how his belly rolled over the waistband of his shorts and felt his fangs itching to sink in and bite. The second-hand swimming shorts were clearly several sizes too small for Aether as they clung tightly to every part of him, with even the bottoms of the legs holding onto his thighs and pressing into their flesh like Dew imagined his fingertips would. Less subtle than he had intended on being, Dew was swiftly caught staring by Aether.
“Bit snug, eh?” Seemingly undeterred by Dew's eyes on him, he wriggled his thumbs under the waistband and ran them along the tight elastic to demonstrate his point. “I should buy my own when we're out on tour!”
The trunks sat even lower on his hips than before when he was finished, and Dew had to wrench his gaze away before the urge to run his tongue along the red marks left on his skin became too much.
Still though, he watched as Aether and Mountain jogged down the deck, feet slapping on the sun-aged wood. His eyes were torn between the line of flexing muscle of Mountain's long, lean thighs, only emphasised further by how short the human swimming trunks were on his unnaturally tall ghoulish body, and the small dimple in Aether's back that was almost hidden by the gentle dusting of dark hairs that covered most of his torso. Dew was part disappointed and yet part relieved as they leapt off the pier, out of sight and into the water below.
He and Zephyr stayed well back from the trio of ghouls in the lake until the risk of being splashed was over. Before long though, the air ghoul sidled up to Dew as he was still looking apprehensively at the pier and the water beneath it.
“Want to go sit on the dock?” They asked gently, giving Dew the space to refuse. He considered for a second longer, before resolving to push silly fears aside and nodding. If a fire ghoul such as Ifrit could manage to bob around happily in the lake, he could surely manage to sit quietly beside it. Still, as they walked down the sun-bleached planks of wood Dew had to concentrate on not thinking about the water flowing under them or the creaking of the boards beneath his feet.
It was better when they sat down, and the lapping of wavelets against the legs of the dock becoming background noise alongside the breeze rustling in the trees and the laughing shrieks of their packmates. Dew closed his eyes and let himself feel the warmth of the spring sunshine cut through with the cool winds occasionally blowing up from the lake below. It really wasn't so bad, he realised, grateful to Zephyr for pulling him out of his comfort zone when he himself had been hesitant. Or perhaps the suggestion to sit together had been as much for them as it had been for him; he noticed that they also hadn't entertained the idea of swimming for a second.
“You're not a fan of water either?” Dew asked curiously.
“Not really,” Zephyr wafted their feathers free of their arms with a small smile, “even when these are hidden they still get wet. I'd need a full glamour to keep them dry, and I'm not confident enough with it yet.”
Dew hummed in understanding before they were interrupted by Ifrit shouting for their attention, waving his arms from some distance away.
“Yes, we're watching!” Zephyr called back with a laugh. “Splash us, and you're back in the noisy AC room for a week – alone!”
Giggling but grateful nonetheless, Dew watched as Ifrit dipped below the water and swan just below the surface with only his spines poking out above it.
“Oooo, you're such a fearsome sea monster!” Zephyr gasped, mock-serious, when he resurfaced again with an expectant grin. Despite the clear coating of sarcasm on the air ghoul's words, Ifrit seemed delighted as he dove back under the water again.
“I guess we could get our feet wet...” Dew mused after a while, finally getting comfortable with the lake's noises surrounding them. The wood beneath his bare feet as he sat cross-legged was also beginning to feel too hot even against his own permanently warm skin. Zephyr smiled and nodded, so Dew did his best to roll up his leggings as far as they would go while Zephyr just pulled up the hem of their culottes.
Together, they carefully lowered their feet into the cold water until their legs were hanging freely off the dock. The cold was startling but refreshing as it tickled Dew’s ankles. Zephyr added to the cooling effect as they began to waft their feathers around, creating a gentle breeze that lifted Dew’s hair off the back of his neck.
Way out in the centre of the lake, Dew thought he saw a head pop up above the water. The glare of the sun was too strong however, and by the time he had shielded his eyes and focused on the pale dot, they were gone again.
He ended up laid flat on his back, his body absorbing the sun shining on the dock while his feet cooled off in the water. He didn’t know how much time passed before he next heard splashing beside him. Dew cracked his eyes open, wincing at the bright shock of the sun with a small hiss, and pushed himself upright to see Aether pulling himself up onto the pier to sit beside him. Water droplets from the lake still clung to the dark hair on his body, like condensation dripping from a cold drink on a hot day. Dew thought he looked just as tempting as one, his mouth watering as he was once again struck with the desire to bite.
Mountain and Ifrit too were soon clambering out of the water to join them, and Dew found his mind spinning in circles as his eyes tried and failed to focus on each of them all at once. He instead flopped onto his back again with a huff; damn those unfairly attractive ghouls, and damn him for wanting what he couldn’t – or at least shouldn’t, each for different reasons – want.
After a moment, he felt movement next to him and the warm radiance of the sun disappear. When Dew opened his eyes he saw Aether standing hovered over him, casting a shadow but thankfully already dry enough from the intense spring sunshine not to drip on him.
“You alright? Ready to eat something?”
Looking up at Aether, Dew realised what a unique view of him he had as he felt blood rise in his cheeks despite their already warm temperature. Had Aether’s borrowed swimming trunks not been several sizes too small, he would have been able to see straight up the legs. Dew didn’t know if that was better or worse than their revealing tightness though: from this angle, the bulge pressing against the front of them was unignorable. Unhelpfully, his mind supplied the answer that yes, he was indeed very ready to eat something, but maybe not quite the picnic food.
Luckily, just as Dew was deciding whether or not to have a crisis about that, Ifrit and Zephyr caused a distraction of their own. The air ghoul, faced with no reservations and unable to resist their mate after hauling himself up onto the dock with his arm muscles flexing effortlessly and looking for all the world as though he should be advertising something, had launched themselves at Ifrit. While Zephyr had attempted to dry Ifrit with a gust from their wings as they moved, it had instead thrown him off balance, almost accidentally sending the pair toppling back into the water. They teetered on the edge of the pier, saved only by the frantic flapping of Zephyr’s wings.
With the potential crisis of a soggy air ghoul averted, and Dew distracting himself and pretending he hadn’t wanted to do much the same to Aether by aggressively sinking his fangs into an apple, the pack set about demolishing the food they had brought.
The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur of sunshine and gentle laughter as the pack lounged around on the shore, until the temperature threatened to drop as the sun headed home. The ghouls staggered to their feet to begin their own trudge back up the hill to the Abbey. Progress was far slower than it had been on the way down earlier on, the soporific effect of the sunshine making itself known in all of them.
Given that, it was no surprise that everyone fell asleep quickly that night. Even Dew, usually one to stay up late and wake early had given in to a never-ending succession of yawns and called it a night. He had even forgone his nightly glamour practice, falling firstly into bed and then to sleep soon after. For once though, it was not a dreamless sleep, nor even one brushed with the faint, watercolour strokes of vague emotions and impressions that usually constituted what Dew would consider a dream. Tonight, it was as though his dreams were being projected into his mind by the sun itself, as luminous and vivid as the stained glass windows in the Chapel.
Dew was back out on the dock, with the sun beating down from above as it had been earlier. This time though he was alone, with no Zephyr beside him and no Ifrit shrieking and splashing in the water. The typical haze that coloured his dreams was there at the edges of his vision, his only clue that this wasn’t real life.
Below, under the surface of the water, Dew sensed something stirring. He knelt down, peering over the edge of the dock to stare into its depths. A chill passed through him, a cool tug in what felt like the very depths of his soul. The small lance of terror he felt as he stared into the blue depths and saw a stream of bubbles rising to meet him was cut through with anticipation. When Aether burst out of the water though it felt somehow incongruous, as though Dew had been expecting someone else.
Before Dream-Dew could dwell on that for too long however, he was once again distracted by the sight of Aether pulling himself out of the water to join him on the dock. This time, Dew let himself stare unabashed, watching Aether’s biceps flex beneath the thick layer of soft yet weathered skin he knew covered them. In his dream, he let himself reach out and touch, to feel Aether’s pulse flow beneath his skin where it was racing as Dew could already tell his own was.
Dew saw hands seek out the waistband of Aether’s shorts once again, thumbs dipping inside to adjust the pressure of the tight elastic. This time though the fingers were long and spindly, with not a trace of the rugged and cracked knuckles he associated with Aether’s large hands to be seen. The vision shifted and morphed in Dew’s head as he registered that they were his hands, and that he could feel what they did. Soft, was the first word he called to mind, before the chill of his water-cooled skin also registered beneath Dew’s infernally warm fingertips. He ran them along the red mark left by the shorts, just as he had wanted to do before, feeling how the crinkled fabric had left its matching imprint against Aether’s skin, and caressing it as though he could smooth the offending wrinkles back out.
Dew’s eyes flicker up to Dream-Aether, only to see him gazing down at him as if he had hung the moon and the stars in the sky. He would know after all, as a quintessence ghoul, Dew supposed. He glanced back down to see Aether’s own hands hanging limply by his sides; uncast actors in the play of Dew’s sleeping mind. His own hands relinquished their hold on Aether, even as his fingertips protested the loss of the quintessence ghoul, to catch Aether’s and place them on his hips. Their large span perfectly stretched to hold on so tightly to his hip bones that Dew felt as though Aether was reaching in to hold him directly by his skeleton.
Returning his attention to the shirtless chest of the ghoul before him, Dew let himself do what he had felt he could never do earlier, back in the real world. He ran a finger through the wet trails of hair on Aether’s chest, indulgently swirling a pattern with the very tip of a careful claw. The urge to taste was strong now, even stronger than it had been during the day. The part of Dew that recognised the situation as a dream must have been in control because he let himself follow through on the desire, leaning in close enough that he could hear Aether’s heart pounding in his chest.
He stretched out a delicate forked tongue, tasting the air around him like a snake: the tang of lake water, the slight dampness of old wood and the itch of pollen. Most of all though he tasted something that could only be Aether. It was like an electrical storm, the air just before lightening struck. It was intoxicating, and Dew couldn’t resist any longer. He leaned in even closer, tracing the patterns he had drawn before with the tip of his tongue.
It felt like licking a battery when he heard Aether’s breath catch sharply in his throat. The sensations took over his brain, draining any rational thought Dream-Dew may have still been holding on to. He could tell his claws were digging into the roll above Aether’s hips, but from the way the quintessence ghoul was gipping him back and panting in his ear it was clear he was unbothered by it. Dew felt half-mad with lust as he proceeded to follow the path of damp hair lower, to where he can feel another, stronger temptation calling to him.
Along his way, his lips grazed the red line left by the shorts that had so caught his attention before, brushing them along the mark that stood out bright against his muted lavender skin. Once again Dew’s fangs begged to bite and this time he didn’t hold back, sinking them into soft flesh. The whine Aether released into his ear was desperate, accompanied by a rush of breath that harmonised with the breaking of wavelets beneath them, and a twitch of the quintessence ghoul’s hips.
Dew felt almost drunk with power as he pressed apologetic kisses to the bite marks he left, before shifting to a new patch of skin and repeating the process; bite, gasp, kiss. By the time Dew let his attention fall to the one part of him that had remained hidden from him earlier, the part most desperately calling out to him, Aether was a quivering mess.
Sprawled out on the dock with Dew kneeling above him, the quintessence ghoul felt like he had been trapped by a cunning predator, yet one he was more than willing to let devour him. Slowly yet deliberately, Dew reached his thumbs back under the waistband of Aether’s swimming shorts, red eyes flickering up to meet violet in silent question.
“Please…” Aether all but whimpered, the first word spoken between them.
It was what Dew needed to hear, pulling at the fabric as he had longed for Aether to do earlier. While he hadn’t been granted a view before, his sleeping mind was more than willing to fill in the blanks. If Dew’s mouth hadn’t already been watering following its earlier exploration, he knew without a doubt it would have started to now at the sight before him.
Dew had barely got a tentative hand on Aether before the quintessence ghoul was a panting mess beneath him. Flushed an even deeper violet than his cheeks, Dew let himself take a moment to just stare, before giving in to the competing urges of his fingertips, tongue, and every other burning inch of his skin.
He was so distracted by the warm weight of Aether in his mouth, and how he was pulling such pretty noises out of the normally so restrained quintessence ghoul, that it took him a moment to realise the burning in his core wasn’t just from the warm sun overhead but from his own desire. Aether’s hands had been wandering too he realised, one rubbing small and grounding circles into his hip under the fabric of Dew’s ever-present leggings while the other danced questioningly between them. It begged him to lose the camouflage he wore like a second skin, to let it explore lower.
Dew pulled back to meet Aether’s gaze and saw him looking back with a mixture of almost delirious desperation and concern at his pause. Dew smiled though, feeling muscles sore with underuse pull as he did so, and nodded. He could have sworn he heard Aether breath a small thank you before his lips were on Dew’s, the taste of himself flooding his mouth and making the quintessence ghoul groan louder than before.
They eventually broke apart again though, Dew now also short of breath as he let Aether shimmy the tight black leggings down his thighs as he continued his exploration of Aether’s torso and all that laid beyond with his mouth. He didn’t get to for long though, before the quintessence ghoul was effortlessly flipping them over to return the favour, nipping at the delicate skin behind Dew’s ear with his fangs until he too was letting out embarrassingly high-pitched mewls of his own.
It was later than Dew normally woke when he eventually regained consciousness in the syrupy warmth that follows a pleasant dream, the morning sun already streaming through the curtains he once again had forgotten to close. He let himself bask in the feeling, every muscle in his body feeling an unwound kind of relaxed he hadn’t felt in a long while. He could even feel the unfamiliar rattle of a satisfied purr building low in his throat.
Eventually though the memories of the dream all came flooding back. The heat under the covers suddenly felt like too much, sweaty and claustrophobic instead of the enveloping comfort from when he woke. Dew groaned and rolled over, crushing his face into the pillow. He thought he’d been doing well at letting himself feel such thoughts, he was a ghoul after all, a hell-born being, sin incarnate. Clearly His absence from the Pit had been having some effect after all Dew thought, cursing himself for once again allowing the human emotions of guilt and shame to creep into him.
As he lay in bed, wondering if it was easier to continue to rot in too-warm discomfort or to get up and face the object of his night-time desires, it was unclear if Dew would have been reassured or not to know that across the hall, Aether was awaking from a very similar dream.
Continuing his endeavour to move past his unwanted reactions to things that should be second-nature to a ghoul, Dew had resolutely thrown himself out of bed, into the shower, and back into everyday life with his pack. Everyone was slowly developing a routine, even without the structured schedules of rehearsals yet it mostly only included when they woke, ate and slept. Still, the ghouls continued to settle and grow comfortable with the Abbey and, as they did so, so too did the Abbey’s inhabitants slowly get used to the pack.
At last, they were starting to get fewer stares at mealtimes as everyone became accustomed to the new faces and their novelty wore off. Still though, it was clear from the way that conversations would stop and start as they passed by that they were still a topic of interest. As a result, the pack had generally decided it was preferable to spend their free time within the Den where possible, interacting with others in the Abbey only when it was necessary.
Part of the attention they drew surely came from how fast news of the two mated ghouls had spread; something not unheard of but certainly something many the crossmated ghouls of the Abbey had been instantly jealous of. In fact, Aether had told them, the last ghouls to find their mate in such a way had been the previous band ghouls Alpha and Omega. The latter had been summoned with the fire ghoul's name emblazoned on his chest, the word being spoken and the bond being struck only seconds later when introductions were made.
Alongside rumours of their bond, whispers of Ifrit's mark in particular had spread around the Abbey. How so, no one could quite work out, especially since all the ghouls were required to be masked outside the Den. They could only assume someone had caught a glance of Ifrit as he had walked to the Chapel for his mask binding on his first day topside. Nobody wanted to consider the alternative; that someone had been peering into their private patio, the one place within the Abbey walls that they could enjoy the outdoors without their restrictive human forms.
It was on one of many of such sunny afternoons spent lying outside that Dew began to wonder just how Ifrit had coped in the Pit; if talk of his hidden soul mark had spread like wildfire around an Abbey full of ghouls from all areas of the Pit, many with uncommon marks of their own, however had he managed before with his spines on full display? Dew’s mark had at least been possible to hide from those who didn’t know him, but Ifrit’s was impossible to miss.
“Hey, If?” Dew asked, unsure if there would ever be a polite way to launch into such a personal question. “What was it like for you in the Pit?”
Ifrit looked up from where he was laid on his front on the warm stones, spines pointing up at the sky.
“How so? Like, what was my clan like? The terrain?” He chuckled at Dew’s half-finished question, which the smaller fire ghoul realised he had left the most important half of inside of his head.
“With your soul mark. How didn’t you get bullied for it?” Surely the other ghouls had had something to say about it, Dew thought. He didn’t want to reveal just how much he knew about the attitudes of other ghouls from experience, lest Ifrit ask him too many follow-up questions, but he suspected he guessed something anyway from the look he gave Dew as he rolled onto his side to face him properly.
“Who’s to say they didn’t?” Ifrit smiled wryly. “They sure did have a lot to say about it at first, though.”
Dew felt guilty at the assumption that Ifrit had had an easier life. With his cheerful and optimistic demeanour, it was easy to forget that he wasn’t just a regular fire ghoul sometimes.
“How did you deal with it?”
Ifrit shrugged, his spines rattling.
“It was a lot to cope with to start, I guess. Everyone had their own ideas about what it meant and how I should feel about it.” He saw Dew’s expression, how he was clinging onto his every word as though they held the key to his own happiness.
Ifrit knew very little about Dew’s clan from the Pit; they were rather small and mostly kept to themselves. He supposed that in an environment like that it would have been impossible to hide from the judgemental stares and pitying looks though. Disguised by Dew’s innocuous questions, and despite Ifrit’s frequent struggle to read between the lines of a conversation, it was very clear to him that Dew was seeking guidance. Whether it be with a soul mark of his own or something else, Ifrit felt an unfamiliar fraternal instinct to pass on whatever advice he could.
“Promise me Dew, never let anyone else tell you how to feel about something. You can’t let them get you down, that’s the only real trick.” He reached back to stroke his spines with a reverence he had never felt for them before meeting Zephyr. “This is the hand I got dealt in life, I couldn’t control it! But what I can control is what I do with it, how I let it affect me.”
It was the first time Ifrit had admitted out loud that his life had been anything less than perfect before. He had always been a cheery ghoul, the kind of kit that every adult around him had had a soft spot for; independent, outgoing and optimistic to a fault. Growing up, he had been told time and time again that whichever ghoul or ghoulette had his soul mark was surely blessed, that they would be lucky to have him.
Approaching adolescence, Ifrit had been relatively unbothered by the idea of his soul mark coming in, however. He knew he was nearing the age when they started to appear, but there was so much else of worth in the world for him to discover still, the childish curiosity and naivety of youth still strong in him. A soulmate could wait; they were something the adults had or wanted, and Ifrit was in no hurry to grow up. As such, he had been entirely unprepared for his soul mark to develop earlier than almost any other ghoul’s had in living memory.
It had started with a prickling in his spine, a strange ticklish sensation that he had brushed off entirely. After that his vertebrae had started to protrude slightly from his spine, the small bumps gradually becoming noticeable enough to the point that his parents had noticed. They too had written off the new development, saying that he must be losing his baby fat and was surely just about to have an adolescent growth spurt. Excited at the prospect of growing taller, maybe even one day outgrowing his own father, Ifrit had seen no issue as the bumps down his spine continued to grow millimetre by millimetre.
The day the first spine broke free of his skin was the first time anyone, Ifrit or otherwise, had taken the changes happening to his body seriously. It had started when he woke with a dull ache at the top of his spine, very similar to the feel of his adult fangs coming in, and the feeling that the skin covering his bones become paper this. Throughout the morning the area around the topmost vertebrae on his spine had becoming increasingly inflamed, burning red-hot and sore. By nightfall, the strange growth on his bone had erupted free with tremendous pain although, thankfully, with minimal blood.
A healer had been sent for as the calciferous lump continued to grow; slowly, but noticeably so, as the hours passed. When they arrived however, there were two more small spines emerging beneath the first and Ifrit was sobbing uncontrollably as the pain only spread further down his back. There had been nothing they could do besides give the young fire ghoul a sleeping draught and hope the town elders could shed some light on what was happening to him.
Several days later, the spines had all broken through the skin and the pain was slowly subsiding for Ifrit, but with the respite from the agony of the still-growing spikes came the knowledge neither he nor his family had been prepared for: they were a soul mark. Long ago in the fire ghouls’ history, such spines had been more commonplace without being soul marks but now they only meant one thing, and it was something that Ifrit hadn’t even known to be afraid of. The ghoul they came from must be quite a bit older, the elders concluded, given how young Ifrit was when they appeared and how rapidly they had grown. They must have been waiting to come in for a while, impatient and unrelenting. By a process of elimination, they had decided it must be from an air ghoul, but any more details than that they were unable to ascertain.
In the coming weeks, the spines finally stopped growing. They were still sore at their roots, making leaning against them in any way difficult, but that pain too was finally subsiding. The mark had clearly tried to hurry him along, to rush him into an adulthood he wasn't ready for, but he resisted. Still struggling to come to terms with what they represented for him, Ifrit just wanted to get back to playing with his friends.
The other young ghouls themselves seemed mostly either curious or indifferent at first, with some even finding their friend’s strange new feature an exciting novelty. Soon though, as news of what they actually were spread through the adults of the clan, one by one the kits had taken on the attitudes of their parents and begun to shun Ifrit, or worse to outright hurl insults at him, repeated from harsh words spoken and heard at home.
Normally such a happy ghoul, Ifrit had struggled to push back against the expectations of those around him. It had taken years of forced smiles and pretend cheerfulness for Ifrit to claw back even a fraction of the social circle he had once enjoyed. He remained on the outside even then, friends with a rebellious set who were more than happy to use him as a symbol for their youthful protests against authority, but unwilling to let him get too close. All the while, he continued to endure the suspicion and distain from others who refused to see past the spines.
For all that Ifrit’s marks had stolen from him, they hadn’t succeeded in taking his natural optimism. That had been something that followed him all the way to maturity, and now to the surface. Even now, as he considered how best to explain to Dew how he had coped, he found himself wanting to gloss over some elements and spare Dew from the details he found most troubling. Ifrit knew that wasn't what he needed to hear though.
“Things were pretty bad, especially at first. Other ghouls can be very close minded.”
Dew nodded; he knew that only too well.
“I think I managed by knowing none of it was my fault. Every nasty thing anyone said, it was all just a reflection of their own hatred, and it's impossible to control that.”
It was the first time Ifrit had admitted that his life before had been anything less than perfect, and it only made Dew appreciate his unwavering optimism more. He thought he could understand it for the first time too; it had been something that annoyed Dew, but he was finally starting to see it as simply the other fire ghoul's reaction to the same bad situation as he had been in. Really, they were just two sides of the same coin, each trying to survive in their own way.
Dew sighed. He had known better than to hope that Ifrit had some magical solution to erasing all the problems his soul mark had come with, but learning it was just his naturally sunny disposition that had kept his head up made it harder for Dew to ever hope to emulate it. They were too different in that way, despite the many similarities between their circumstances.
“It wasn't easy, it still isn't always.” Ifrit said, reading Dew's thoughts. “I'm not blind; I see how others here look at me. But as I see it I either look past it, or I let them win and make me miserable. The ghouls in the Pit were bullies, the ones up here are just ignorant, but that doesn't excuse them though, and bullies don't deserve the satisfaction of getting under your skin. Just think how much you could upset them by being happy, that's the sweetest payback of all.”
That made Dew smile – living well out of spite; that was more his style. If he ever ended up back in the Pit, he'd try to keep that in mind. Even now, maybe he could try and apply a similar ethos to his topside life.
Due to Aether’s assertion that their infinite free time would end once rehearsals began, the ghouls were taking every opportunity they could to slack off. On one such afternoon though the rain had made an unwelcome reappearance amidst a spell of sunny days and Dew found himself bored and pacing the Den. He was itching to go for a walk in the grounds or something – what were they even supposed to do on days like these when it was so foul outside? His grumbling eventually attracted the attention of Mountain, who was managing to entertain himself indoors just fine, much to Dew's annoyance.
“You can still go out there, you know.” He laughed gently as Dew dramatically flopped backwards over the back of the couch he was sat on, a puddle of blond hair surrounding the upside-down face that landed almost in his lap with a huff. How Dew didn't hurt his back with stunts like that, Mountain would never know. “We're not made of sugar!”
Dew wrinkled his nose.
“What's so bad about the rain anyway, compared to a shower?” Mountain laid his book aside and turned to face the fire ghoul better before tacking on a joke. “You do shower, right?”
Sticking out a forked tongue, Dew considered the first question for a moment.
“It's wetter.”
Mountain laughed, not unkindly, at the ridiculous statement.
“I thought you'd say it made your hair frizzy, or it was cold, or something.”
“Nah, I can keep myself warm enough.” Dew shrugged, choosing not to acknowledge Mountain’s equally correct assumption about him fussing over his hair.
“You liked having your feet in the lake the other day though, right?”
“Yeah...”
Although Mountain's line of questioning was making Dew slightly uncomfortable, he was putting in such an effort to understand him that Dew was willing to humour the earth ghoul rather than simply shutting the conversation down.
“That was just my feet though, not everything–” He gestured vaguely at the space around his head. “And the shower just goes where it points, y'know? The rain's everywhere, and it gets in your face and you can't just step out of the stream of it?”
Dew realised as he spoke just how ridiculous it must sound to Mountain, but the earth ghoul gave no reaction that would suggest that. He nodded instead, looking as though he didn't fully understand but was trying to, nonetheless. His quiet gave Dew a chance to think for a moment.
“I guess I'm just not really used to it. We never really had rain in the Pit, and when we did it was so full of sulphur and ash we tended to stay well away because it made such a mess of everything.”
“Well, I can't promise you'd stay clean if you went out there right now, the ground tends to become a bit of a mud bath, but the rain itself is clean enough.” Mountain saw Dew's gaze flick longingly back to the window, even from his upside-down position on the couch. “Wanna give it a try anyway? You can always shower after.”
Dew considered it. Aside from the obvious, that his clear dislike of water was interfering with his hybrid ghoul story, he did want to get used to everything that happened topside even down to the unfamiliar weather. He did hope to stay here for a while, after all. The fabric covering his arms was thick, surely that ought to hide the soul mark he knew would start glowing the second it touched water. If so, the rain seemed like a silly thing to be afraid of. Dew supposed he would have to face it eventually – one way or another they were bound to end up somewhere rainy out on tour, and his human disguise would certainly suffer if he appeared to be frightened of the weather. Besides, he could always try to glamour his arms if needed, turning the luminous mark into something more akin to a tattoo.
“Sure.”
Mountain got to his feet with a grin and began heading to the door, but before he made it more than a few steps he heard light thumping and what he could only describe as a squeak coming from the couch, before Dew spoke again, mild panic rising in his voice.
“Mount...” The fire ghoul was still bend backwards over the back of the sofa, folded at such an angle that Mountain's spine hurt just looking at him. Dew's feet paddled pathetically in the air, and his red face wasn't just caused by all the blood running to his head. “I think I'm stuck.”
Shaking his head fondly Mountain grabbed Dew's hands, pulling him up until his feet landed safely on the ground again.
“Ready?” Mountain asked, making no further comment. Dew nodded sheepishly. “Let's go then!”
Dew paused on the threshold as Mountain threw open the french windows. Zephyr, sat in their usual perch beside the doors where the natural light was strongest, looked on with a mixture of amusement and confusion as the earth ghoul walked out into the pelting rain. With a deep breath, and a final check that his sleeves were fully covering his wrists, Dew stepped outside to join him.
He shrieked as a wet droplet his him square in the face, wiping it away only for five more to replace it. Nevertheless he persevered, padding carefully across the slippery paviours of the patio until he reached where Mountain was waiting for him on the grass, his toes wriggling in the vibrant green.
“All good?” He asked, before taking off towards the tree line at a light jog when Dew nodded in confirmation, his dampening hair swinging in front of his face. It really wasn't as bad as he had thought, Dew had to admit. He gave chase, having to run flat out to keep up with the earth ghoul's long strides. The feeling of the wet grass splashing under his pounding feet was more fun than he had expected, distracting him from the cold raindrops still pelting his face.
Stopping under the trees, Dew took a moment to roll his leggings up as the ankles began to get soaked. He snuck a look at his arms as he did so; the sleeves were doing their job perfectly, with his mark still totally hidden.
“C'mon, follow me!” Mountain seemed to be filling with new life as the rain poured around him, as though he was himself a plant relishing being watered. He took off again when Dew was ready, skirting around the edge of the trees until they came to a path that ran parallel to the one leading down to the lake. They followed it for a short while, the dirt already churned up from the rain and their footsteps splashing messily around them. Dew couldn't find it in himself to care, for once.
As the path opened up upon reaching a clearing, the rain suddenly got even heavier, a rumble of thunder echoing in the far-off distance. Mountain stopped in the centre, staring up into the clouds with his eyes shut against the onslaught of water as a sunflower turned her golden face to the sun.
Dew wasn't feeling quite comfortable enough with the never-ending cascade of raindrops to follow his lead just yet, instead tossing wet hair over his shoulder and letting himself relish in the feel of the squelching wet grass and earth beneath his feet. Mountain eventually joined him, the large ghoul giggling like a kit as he ploughed past Dew to wade further into a deep patch of mud. Dew hadn't intended to follow him that far, but he sunk deeper into the puddle than expected, swiftly finding himself in up to his mid-calf.
“Did you bring me out here just to play in the mud?” He asked incredulously. “Earth ghoul.”
Mountain did indeed look blissfully happy stood knee-deep in his element, planted in the ground like a tree.
“Maybe?”
Dew huffed a laugh, clenching his toes to feel the cool earth squelch through them. It was more satisfying than he imagined, enough so that he soon began to forget about the tickle of the falling rain on his cheeks or how his hair and clothes were swiftly becoming soaked, and instead focus on only the sensations of nature around him. There was more than just the dull rainclouds and the mud out here; he could also hear birds twittering their displeasure in the trees and could see how all the greenery and flowers in the clearing grew brighter as they drank deeply.
“Alright, this is quite fun.” He admitted grudgingly, pulling a foot free of the mud to hear the ground ooze to fill in the voids it left behind. The sticky brown earth coated every inch of his leg, and he tried to set aside the instinctual squeamishness the mess threatened to cause in him. “But I'm not explaining this mess to Aeth when we get back.”
The rain felt like such a silly fear to have developed, even though he knew it had its roots in the soul mark he had been trying so hard to forget. Quashing it so quickly though, both by demonstrating to himself that his mark would not act like a beacon through his clothes and though Mountain’s easy-going, unperturbed attitude around his wariness, made him believe he could tackle anything.
Zephyr caught them sneaking back into the Den a while later once the rain had stopped, their hair plastered to their faces from the rain and mud splashed up to their knees, both wearing matching grins from ear to ear. Despite his assertions that he could keep himself warm just fine, Dew was shivering slightly. It was a comical sight, seeing the tallest and shortest ghouls like this with matching guilty but unapologetic expressions, twin trails of muddy footprints showing their path across the patio.
The pair had paused in the doorway, considering how best to get to their rooms to clean up without continuing to drag mud all across the common room floor. Zephyr rolled their eyes, and wordlessly got up to pass the half-drowned ghouls a towel from the kitchen.
It was only a few days later that they finally received their summons to the band room. Aether answered a timid knock on the door to a pair of terrified looking siblings, clutching a piece of paper with the details. Tomorrow morning, they would begin their preparations to become the newest incarnation of the nameless ghouls of the band Ghost. It was a day that was long overdue, Aether had thought; every day that passed brought them one day closer to the tour without having ever touched their instruments.
The chatter on the way over was excited but subdued, everyone being more than aware of the importance of the day. When they arrived in the harshly lit corridor the two newest ghouls looked around the new environment with interest, but Aether swiftly directed them into the band room seeing that the lights inside were already on. That wasn’t before Dew noticed that one of the coloured bulbs above the smaller practice rooms was illuminated red today, however.
In the main room, the previous band ghouls were already waiting. No one had made any move to set up, but it was clear they were in an environment that was familiar to them; lounging around, leaning against amps or perched on the drum stool. They barely acknowledged the entrance of the newer ghouls, beyond letting their conversation fall conspicuously silent.
“Alright, let’s get this over with.” The largest of the ghouls, a fire ghoul, clapped his hands and announced by way of introduction, making no secret of the fact that their help wasn’t voluntary.
The other three ghouls in the room slowly got to their feet, their faces a mixture of bored and sullen. Dew realised that the giant brute of a quintessence ghoul was notably missing, which surprised him as he thought he was mated to the fire ghoul from how close they stuck in the dining hall, yet he was thankful for his absence whatever the situation. As the pack nervously split up to join their elemental counterparts, Dew tightened the strings on his hoodie. Glamoured by the mask his fire ghoul horns weren’t visible, but he had no desire to attract any more attention from Alpha than necessary.
While the ghoul wasn’t being outwardly hostile, there was nothing friendly in his demeanour. He was large, taller than either Ifrit or Aether and broader too, and appeared to be from a similar region of the Pit to Ifrit judging from his dark hair and thick black horns. They, while the same curving shape as Ifrit’s and also appearing to be formed of sharp, carved obsidian, glowed with a deep indigo blue light, shot through with occasional red-brown sparks. That was something Dew hadn't seen before. Still though, he thought he knew this ghoul's kind well enough already; Alpha could crush him like a bug if he so desired.
Mist, being even shorter than Dewdrop, cut a less imposing figure than the fire ghoul, although Dew knew better than to underestimate a ghoulette on size alone. Hell knew how he had experienced enough of that when he was younger and still figuring himself out. He had also seen his fair share of other fire ghouls make that mistake, only to return licking their wounds with tails between their legs. Dew hurried to join her before she could call attention to him.
“The new water ghoul, eh?” She questioned sardonically. Having briefly met before, there was no time spared on formalities like introductions.
“That’s what they tell me.” Dew shrugged.
“Whatever the Clergy say, I guess.” Rolling her eyes, Mist turned away to lead him to the cupboard that stored the guitars.
Dew saw Aether looking around, not in confusion about where his own mentor as but with a sadness on his face. He knew the quintessence ghoul already had the basics of the guitar down after his demonstration the other day, but it was clear he was disappointed to miss his own official handover alongside the rest of his pack.
“You got it, right Aeth?” Alpha asked, clapping the quintessence ghoul on the back as Ifrit practically bounded up to them with excitement. There was a touch of real concern in his tone, but he made no apology for his mate. Aether nodded silently, before Dew turned most of his attention back to the water ghoulette in front of him. He needed to focus; these next few hours would probably be some of his most important ones in the Abbey when it came to learning his role.
He still didn’t fully understand what had gone on between Aether, Terzo and the previous ghouls, but knowing that Aether already had some experience with guitar made him wonder if some of the acrimony came from Omega realising he had been training his own replacement. That had to hurt, Dew thought. He itched to ask Mist, but tried to focus. Now wasn’t the time: he needed to learn his role here and not jeopardise his position out of curiosity for a ghoul he had no right to pry about.
Carefully but without embellishment, Mist walked Dew through how to set up his guitar; what cable went where, what the various knobs on both the bass and amplifier did and how he should be tuning his strings. She was cold in her manner but not uncaring, stopping to make sure Dew was following what she was doing and understanding.
“You were summoned for this, so actually learning to play should come naturally to you,” she explained, demonstrating how to attach and adjust the strap before placing it over his head, “but there’s some things that still need to be taught. These instruments aren’t like anything you’ll have seen in the Pit.”
Dew glanced over at Aether, alone in the corner and practicing a small riff over and over with headphones on. He hadn’t been summoned for this, Dew knew, but seemed to be coping regardless. Could it really be that Aether was learning truly from scratch, without the divine assistance of His summoning’s will?
He felt a flicker of pride for the quintessence ghoul’s determination, followed by a greater understanding of his deep-seated worries. He knew Aether feared that he would be deemed inadequate, a poor representative of the Church and all they stood for, as evidenced by how he tried to control even the smallest things like how the ghouls presented themselves around the Abbey. Dew was certain Aether would be ready in time for the tour with or without assistance from Below; with a drive like that, how couldn’t he be?
“You like him, don’t you.” Mist smirked, thawing slightly as she spotted Dew’s stolen glances at Aether.
Dew snapped back to copying the fingering of a simple riff she was showing him, but that didn’t stop her from snickering at him before answering his unspoken question.
“He’s a good guy, just in an awkward position. Meg’s being hard on him, but I’m sure you can understand why.”
Shrugging, Dew tried to act indifferent while simultaneously hoping Mist would tell him more. He didn’t want to look like he was prying, as much as he wanted to know everything there was to know about the quintessence ghoul. Luckily, Mist seemed happy to talk.
“You know Aether was on tour with us last time, right?” She lowered her voice, although between Ifrit’s enthusiastic plucking of a disjointed tune and the hammering of earth ghouls on drum kit it was unlikely anyone else could hear them talking in the corner. “We all thought it was a bit strange, Terzo bringing his assistant ghoul out on tour at first. Especially because – and don’t tell him I told you this – he had a bit of a rough start here, with his glamour and everything. Meg was worried he’d be a liability, so he kept an eye out to make sure nothing reflected badly on our pack, y’know?”
Dew nodded, remembering Aether saying his first weeks topside had been a struggle.
“Well it turned out Aeth was doing fine by that point, but Terzo literally hadn’t summoned a single other ghoul for him to form any bonds with, just other Abbey ghouls who got split up and scattered all over the place. We all felt a bit sorry for him, but Meg really took him under his wing, taught him some bits and pieces of reading tabs and playing the guitar and stuff to help him feel more involved.”
“And now he's replaced him,” Dew mused aloud, finally understanding where much of the tension between them could have come from, “I can see why he’s upset.”
Mist nodded sagely. That had to hurt; Dew imagined it would feel almost like a betrayal. He itched to ask Mist more, but he could see Alpha looking their way and knew this wasn’t the time. Dew needed to use these precious hours to learn his role in the Abbey and the band, not jeopardise his position out of curiosity for a ghoul he had no right to pry about.
“Show me that last riff again?” He asked instead.
When the ghouls later returned to the Den they were exhausted, both mentally and physically. Several amongst them also had sore and red fingertips, although Aether had reassured them that callouses would form in their place. Still though, it was with a sense of accomplishment that they went to sleep that night; the scope of the work that lay in front of them clearer now they had all made a start.

Have you ever thought about what kindof musical themes would be associated with your OCs? Like, what their theme tune or leitmotif might be played on, that kind of thing?
First off im so sorry for not replying earlier ive kept this in my drafts for like a year
Rubs my hand evily like a little hungry fly YEEEESSS YESSSS YESSSSSSSSSS
Honestly tho i dont rly have much (if any) musical knowledge to be able to use precise or specific terms for musical theory stuff or the right name for certain instruments, so overall i can only try describe the ~vibe~ for what each character/setting would be, also since i was given the opportunity to talk about the topic ill just go ham and talk way more than what was asked bc honestly what are the chances of being asked about this in the future? Hashtag yolo 2012
This is gonna get long so i apologize in advance to those who dont care. ill try to clump characters together by emojis, first emoji for setting/universe and second for character
👼💖For cupid/arisu i imagine music box notes, happy pop and "sparkly" over-the-top cheery music like magical girl anime openings, one of the main musical inspirations for her and a song i like to listen to when i draw her is pururin and dokuro-chan's op
👼💚Levia-tan/himari would also have the music box motif but in lower notes, a song much more subtle than cupid's but slowly building up energy over time until it's ready to snap.
🍄🐐 Juandice would be folk music, but often getting off-key as to give an unsettling tone. A song i think that enclapsulates his vibe perfectly is AJJ's A Song Dedicated To The Memory Of Stormy The Rabbit (ive been meaning to do a juan animatic to this song for a while now but i never get around to it)
🍄⛪ father rot id like it to be very unsettling off-key strings. Maybe a little bit of carnival sounding music but very very faintly. Kinda giving you a vibe the guy isnt good news but at the same time there's something unnatural about him it just makes you curious
🪐🛸 ak-47 happy cheery chiptune music, voice synthesizers (aka vocaloids etc) and breakcore, something like Anamanaguchi, METAROOM, pinocchio-p's older music (hello there earthling, nina, loney ufo)
🪐🍀 clovers is a tough one, i can imagine it being a song structured in three parts where the first is the normal theme, something more old school sounding like DS soundfont. Think pokemon BW's soundtrack. The second part is a more raw, loud, incomprehensible type of music like Shinsei Kamattechan, specifically Ikareta NEET. Third part would be a much quieter, sadder version of the first part melody. Think of how Snowy during genocide route in Undertale.
😈🗡 Alma would be metal instruments, specifically guitar riffs
😈🍥 carol would be trash metal/grunge, bass
😈🏥 cirrus would be either drums or piano. I like Unreasonable Behavior from offgame and Alone In Town from silent hill as examples
😈🦇 fontini would be music box and intense sounding music. At the price of oblivion from homestuck is a good example
😈🦟 dominic would be spanish guitar.
😈⚡paloma indie rock/acid rock guitar
😈⚔ rouxinol.. im not sure. Something very intense and intimidating sounding, but i dont know instruments that much. For now i can just say in my mind it sounds like something out of carpenter bruts music
😈💎 lyre would be a specific genre of pop that idk the name. Venus by lady gaga, heavun by hemlock springs, glorious by muse.
👿🐦 corbin would be among "instruments that arent instruments" like industrial noise music. Music that sounds like it was composed entirely out of regular warehouse tools. Dentist drills included
This isnt all of my ocs but if theyre not included then its bc i dont have much in mind musically for them

I love my dentist because they're always playing the randomest thing on Netflix in the exam rooms. In here I have seen the awful Junji Ito cartoon, some very low rent German singing contest show, and today, a group of luxury vacation influencers looking for sasquatch somewhere. A guy in a bigfoot suit approaches their hot tub in broad daylight on a wide open deck and they all try their best to look shocked and terrified when he enters the frame. Now they're going to a remote ranch run entirely by autistic adults. The influencers are constantly going WOOOOOO! like they're on spring break and every time they walk up on someone the worker gets this Oh Fuck Oh No Oh Shit look on their face. One of them explains to the interior design influencer how rocks are formed and she says "I will never look at a rock the same way again." I was kind of disappointed when they tipped me back to clean my teeth so I missed the part where the workers take the influencers into the hills to look for grizzly bears at night. I'm sure it went great.

IKE & TINA TURNER: THE GREAT RHYTHM & BLUES SESSIONS

The 1980’s have treated Ike and Tina Turner quite differently. Tina has become a contemporary superstar recording somewhat glossy “Pop” material (albeit of high quality). Ike, meanwhile, has struggled, having to deal with a variety of legal problems while seeing his personal problems with Tina dragged through the media incessantly. In the process, his once immense contribution to R&B history has been somewhat overshadowed.
There was an earlier time, though, before the general public was made aware of their personal trials and tribulations, when the Ike and Tina Turner Revue was one of the hottest, most durable, and potentially explosive of all rhythm and blues ensembles. Fronted by Tina, one of the rawest, most sensual, and impossibly dynamic voices in black music, the Ike and Tina Revue was an ensemble that dripped musical discipline while manifesting nearly unbearable tension, the combination eventually giving way to wave upon wave of catharsis. At their height, only the James Brown Revue could operate on the same level.
The Ike and Tina Turner story starts deep in the heart of the pre-World War II Mississippi Delta. It was in the jumping town of Clarksdale that Ike was born in the fall of 1931. As a child he was fascinated by the piano playing of blues man Pinestop Perkins (whom he heard via Helena, Arkansas’ King Biscuit Radio Show). Before he was eight the youngster could be heard rattling his own set of 88’s. Less than ten years later he had joined a large swing ensemble going by the name the Top Hatters and run by a local saxophone playing dentist.
After Turner served a stint in the capacity of disc jockey for Clarksdale’s WROX, a number of former Top Hatters came together under a new guise, Ike Turner and the Kings of Rhythm. By March 1951 the Kings of Rhythm, through the intercession of B.B. King, cut four sides for Sam Phillips’ Memphis Recording Service. Phillips, in turn, leased the recordings to Chess Records in Chicago who issued two of them under saxophone player/vocalist Jackie Brenston’s name. Part boogie and part incipient rock and roll, “Rocket 88” by Jackie Brenston and the Delta Cats became a number one R & B hit in the spring of 1951. Ironically, Ike Turner’s first taste of Success didn’t even mention his name.
From late 1951 to 1956 Ike proceeded to play the role of talent scout and producer [or the California-based Modern Recording Company (taking a brief timeout in 1953 to record a few tracks by Billy “the Kid” Emerson, Johnny O’Neal and himself for Sam Phillips’ fledgling Sun label). During his tenure with Modern he waxed sides by the likes of Elmore James, B.B. King, Rosco Gordon, the King Biscuit Boys, Johnny Ace, Junior Parker and, of course, the Kings of Rhythm.
Having moved his base of operations to East St. Louis in 1955, Ike also changed record company affiliations, recording the Kings of Rhythm and producing others for Cincinnati’s King/Federal complex. Perhaps the most notable record he was associated with at King was Billy Gayles’ incendiary “I’m Tore Up.” By 1958 Turner had moved his activities to Eli Toscano’s Chicago-based Cobra and Artistic labels. A couple of records were Issued by Toscano before Turner recorded two further releases for a local St. Louis label, Stevens Records, under the name Icky Renrut in 1953 (the pseudonym was a device designed to circumvent outstanding contractual obligations elsewhere).
It was at this point that Tina entered the picture. Born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee in November 1939, Tina spent the first fourteen years of her life living in a number of small, largely rural western Tennessee hamlets with names such as Brownsville, Ripley, and Spring Hill. Her mother had moved to St. Louis in 1950. Five years later Tina followed suit. There she met Ike and the other Kings of Rhythm at what had become the band’s home base, the Club Manhattan in East St. Louis. Her sister, Alline Bullock, was dating drummer Gene Washington. Anna Mac Bullock was all of sixteen.
After a few months of nightly inveterate Kings of Rhythm worship, Tina got up and sang with the band. Astonished by her combination of emotion and up-against-the-wall power, Ike Turner let her take the occasional spot with the band. Soon he offered Anna Mac Bullock a job. Still in high school, she had acquired a new vocation.
In 1960 the Kings of Rhythm cut a demo of the Ike-penned “A Fool In Love”. Copies were dutifully sent to all the important independent record companies then recording R & B. Only one, Juggy Murray’s Sue label, expressed interest. Murray was sure he smelled a hit and, in his mind, Anna Mae Bullock was the key. After flying to St. Louis and impressing this notion upon Ike, he signed the band to a four-year deal. Ike, wisely, changed the name of Anna Mae to Tina, and the Kings of Rhythm became the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. A new age had dawned in the lives of all concerned.
“A Fool In Love” climbed its way to the #2 R & B slot while stopping at #27 Pop. Other hits quickly followed on Sue over the next four years including “I Idolize You”, “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine”, “Poor Fool” and “Tra La La La La”. All were Top 10 R & B and all also saw some Pop action, “it’s Gonna Work Fine” being the most successful going all the way to #14.
The Ike and Tina Turner Revue had arrived. Ike, though, unfortunately combined an acute sense of impatience with a workaholic personality. The result meant that Ike subscribed to the John Lee Hooker school of doing business; i.e. record at any opportunity for anyone who happened to be willing to put cash on the barrel head, regardless of their taste in packaging or their ability to promote or distribute the product. The results were threefold: Ike and Tina are perhaps the most over recorded R & B ensemble of all time; the various records issued under their name tend to be uneven, at times suffering from substandard material; and sorting the various recordings out tends to be problematic. That said, they still managed to place twenty-five records on the R & B charts for nine separate companies between 1960 and 1975.
The Ike and Tina Revue was always hyperactive, constantly playing shows (often a mind boggling three hundred plus a year), rehearsing and recording. The latter occurred virtually anywhere they found themselves with a few days to kill and an available studio. After sessions were completed, Ike would debate on who he would sell the tapes to. Such practices make it near impossible to precisely date these recordings but they appear to have taken place in 1967 or 1968, the sessions conducted in Memphis at the Royal Recording Studio, the same studio that Willie Mitchell and Hi Records would use to cut all of AI Green’s, Ann Peebles’ and Syl Johnson’s early seventies hits. They were originally issued over the course of a series of albums released in 1968 and 1969 on Ike’s Pompeii label, distributed at the time by the Atlantic subsidiary, Atco Records.
Ike took production credit and wrote a number of the songs. Also prominent in the composition department is one Mack Rice. A former member of The Falcons, Sir Mack Rice had scored big with “Mustang Sally” on Blue Rock in 1965. When Ike Turner ran into him in Memphis he was working for Stax Records both as an artist and writer. His “It Sho Ain’t Me” is closely modelled on the Stax sound developed by Otis Redding on ballads such as “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”, the latter a song that Ike and Tina would do well with in 1969. In contrast, Rice’s “Betcha Can’t Kiss Me” is a mid-tempo chugger fueled by Tina’s ever impassioned vocal pyrotechnics. The Chipmunk effect on the backup vocals is just a little too cute. Asked about it in 1990, Mack Rice just laughed and said that was Ike’s idea.
Other highlights abound, where Tina’s concerned most notably with Ike’s own “I’m Fed Up” and Wayne Carson Thompson’s “You Got What You Wanted.” On these and other songs included here, Ike has created arrangements set in keys that at various points are nearly too high for Tina’s range. The result is a characteristic strain that manifests itself in much of what Tina sung in her years with Ike. It’s a technique that Isaac Hayes and David Porter used to great advantage with Sam and Dave at Stax. In recent years Tina has said that she didn’t like singing this way. That may be the case, but the results are undeniably chilling. Ike contributes his share as well, turning in strong bluesy stinging guitar lines on B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby” and Bobby Blue Bland’s “I Smell Trouble.”
Three of the songs included here, “It Sho Ain’t Me”, “Too Hot To Hold”, and “Beauty Is Just Skin Deep” were released as forty-fives under three different monikers; Ike and Tina Turner, Tina Turner and the Ikettes respectively. Those listening closely will notice that it is not Tina singing on the latter; rather it’s a typically anonymous Ikette. Typically, anonymous because Ike felt that if people knew their names and they had hits, the individual Ikettes would be able to leave and start careers of their own. Instead, this way he owned the name “The lkettes,” paid the singers salary that entailed roadwork and sessions, and kept all the royalties himself. “Make ‘Em Wait” was the flip side of the “Beauty Is Just Skin Deep” and is definitely sung by one of the Ikettes and, to these ears, “Poor Little Fool” is also delivered by one of the backing girls.
None of these records were hits in the era of rampant psychedelia but such does not belie their eminent quality. Ike may have been a dubious businessman but nonetheless he was an absolute master of rhythm and blues guitar, he possessed a fine ear, a superb band and, in Tina, one of the great rhythm and blues voices of all time. Enjoy.
