Lowkey wondering how much energy my house wastes when I’m not looking. Energy audit might be the most grown-up thing I’ve considered all month.

Spring Home Maintenance Checklist: Protect Your Home This Spring
Tumblr media
As the chill of winter fades and the warmth of spring emerges, it’s the perfect time to give your home some much-needed attention. Regular home maintenance not only keeps your home looking great but also helps prevent costly repairs down the road. At Kramer Insurance, we understand how important it is to protect your biggest investment. Follow this spring home maintenance checklist to keep your home in top shape for the season ahead.
1. Inspect Your Roof and Gutters
Winter weather can take a toll on your roof. Look for missing or damaged shingles, and check for leaks or signs of wear. Clean out gutters and downspouts to prevent water damage and ensure proper drainage away from your home’s foundation.
2. Check Your HVAC System
Spring is the ideal time to service your air conditioning unit before the summer heat kicks in. Replace filters, check for leaks, and consider scheduling a professional tune-up to ensure your system runs efficiently.
3. Examine Windows and Doors
Inspect your windows and doors for gaps or cracks that could lead to energy loss. Caulk or weatherstrip as needed to improve energy efficiency and keep your home comfortable. Clean window screens and check for any necessary repairs.
4. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Safety first! Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and test them to ensure they are functioning properly. This simple step can make a big difference in protecting your home and loved ones.
5. Inspect Your Foundation and Exterior Walls
Look for cracks or signs of shifting in your home’s foundation. Check exterior walls for signs of damage, such as peeling paint or mold growth, and address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
6. Prepare Your Lawn and Landscaping
Rake up any leftover winter debris, trim overgrown shrubs, and fertilize your lawn to encourage healthy growth. Inspect your irrigation system for leaks and ensure proper watering coverage.
7. Check Your Home’s Plumbing
Inspect faucets, pipes, and hoses for leaks. Look under sinks and around appliances for any signs of water damage. If necessary, schedule plumbing maintenance to avoid potential water issues.
8. Clean and Organize Outdoor Spaces
Spring is the perfect time to clean up patios, decks, and outdoor furniture. Power wash surfaces, check for structural damage, and apply a fresh coat of sealant to protect against the elements.
Protect Your Home with the Right Insurance
While regular maintenance helps prevent costly repairs, having the right homeowners insurance provides an added layer of protection. Make sure your policy is up to date and covers potential spring hazards, such as flooding or storm damage.
At Kramer Insurance, we’re here to help you protect what matters most. Call us today at (765) 896-8852 or visit kramerinsuresit.com to review your policy and ensure you have the coverage you need.
Start the season off right with a well-maintained home and peace of mind, knowing you’re fully protected!

Mastering Garage Door Spring Replacement: A Comprehensive Guide to Safety and Success
Tumblr media
Garage door springs are critical components of your garage door system, providing the necessary tension to facilitate smooth opening and closing. However, due to the wear and tear they endure over time, replacing garage door springs becomes inevitable. Yet, it's a task that requires precision and caution to ensure safety for both you and your property. In this guide, we'll delve into the essential steps and safety measures for replacing garage door springs safely.
Understanding the Risks Associated with Garage Door Spring Replacement
Before embarking on the replacement process, it's crucial to comprehend the potential hazards involved. Garage door springs are under immense tension, and mishandling them can lead to serious injuries or property damage. Therefore, it's advisable to exercise caution and, when in doubt, seek professional assistance.
Step-by-Step Guide to Safe Garage Door Spring Replacement:
Prepare the Workspace: Begin by clearing out any clutter or obstructions around your garage door to create a safe working environment. Ensure ample lighting and gather all necessary tools and equipment, including winding bars, safety goggles, and gloves.
Release the Tension: Before removing the old springs, it's essential to release the tension from the garage door system. This can be achieved by carefully disconnecting the opener and manually lowering the door until it's fully closed.
Identify the Type of Spring: Garage doors typically use either torsion springs or extension springs. Identify the type of spring installed in your system before proceeding with the replacement process. Each type requires different techniques for safe removal and installation.
Remove the Old Springs: Using winding bars and following manufacturer guidelines, carefully unwind and remove the old springs from the torsion tube or track hanger. Exercise caution and avoid applying excessive force to prevent accidents.
Install the New Springs: Once the old springs are removed, it's time to install the new ones. Ensure that the new springs are compatible with your garage door system and follow manufacturer instructions meticulously. Use winding bars to wind the springs to the appropriate tension level.
Test the Door: After installing the new springs, cautiously test the functionality of your garage door by manually opening and closing it several times. Look out for any unusual noises or irregular movements that may indicate an installation error.
Reconnect the Opener: Once you're satisfied with the replacement process, reconnect the garage door opener and test its operation. Make any necessary adjustments to ensure smooth and seamless functionality.
Safety Precautions to Remember:
Always wear protective gear, including safety goggles and gloves, when working with garage door springs.
Never attempt to repair or replace springs without proper knowledge and experience. When in doubt, consult a professional technician.
Avoid standing directly under the garage door or springs while performing maintenance or repairs.
Regularly inspect your garage door springs for signs of wear and tear and replace them as needed to prevent accidents.
By following these steps and safety precautions, you can effectively replace garage door springs while prioritizing safety and minimizing risks. Remember, when it comes to garage door maintenance and repairs, safety should always be the top priority.

Signs of Sensor Compromise
Garage door springs are subjected to constant tension and stress each time you operate your garage door. This wear and tear can lead to a loss of tension and effectiveness over time.

Always try to get a jump on culling old comb in the brood chamber this time of year before my bees occupy both deeps and there are loads of swarm cells. My bees usually overwinter with 2 8f deeps. Since the buggers want to draw wax in the spring , I set strong hives up to be a deep frame factories so I can refresh their brood chambers the next year with good clean drawn comb. Per the steps, 1. Scrape down burr and invert boxes 2. Cull old frames in the upper box (was the lower). 3. Shift frames to so fresh clean comb is centered above brood zone 4. Super with checkerboarded deep that has half drawn comb and half waxed foundation. Write year on foundation top bar so it can be tracked for future maintenance. I then render down wax from the old culled comb and use it to wax new foundation. The timing for doing this maintenance is about always the same time S. discolor blooms. #bee season cycles #bees #honeycomb #springmaintenance #beebloompgh2018 #overwinteringbees (at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)

SOCIAL DISTANCING DAY 66. I conked out asleep on the sofa last night before posting my daily “Covid Insta-Journal The World Deserves.” I bought a new air filter for the furnace, and took this photo so I could get the right dimensions when masked-shopping Home Depot and avoiding people and using the self checkout. That’s probably the main update. #springmaintenance #quarantinelife #stayhome #unlessyouneedafurnacefilter (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAdJlFqgH0U/?igshid=dagik45k9sgu

Your HVAC system only works properly when regular and proper maintenance is done. Seasonal changes like spring can impact your HVAC system considerably. If you don’t maintain the system seasonally, its ability to produce and distribute air evenly and steadily may be compromised. Read our checklist for spring maintenance.
