'The Iron Angel: The Tale of Maria Røntgen' - Chapter 1: Welcome to Megaton

(A Fallout 3 Fanfiction)

Please be advised: the following story is based around my own playthrough of Fallout 3, and is basically one loooooonnnnnnngggggg spoiler. So, obviously, SPOILER ALERT. Maria Røntgen is my own original character I've created for this story, but all other assets are the intellectual of Bethesda Softworks. Please support the official release.

As Maria pushed the door open and took her first step into the open air of the wastes, her eyes flooded with the harsh light of the midday sun. Squinting, she held an arm up to shield her eyes with a wince.

The air was hot - hotter than she'd ever imagined, but as her eyes slowly began to adjust to the light, she found herself in awe. Looking over the rocks and out to the wastes, she was seeing the open sky for the first time in her life, and an endless horizon that she could barely fathom.

Strange... she thought to herself. I'd always heard the sky would be blue. I guess that must have been more common during pre-war times.

Maria adjusted Butch's switchblade to settle on it's clip on her belt and started making her way down the dusty dirt path.

As she continued down the way, she started to hear the faint sound of shrill music; it sounded like a flute being played through a tin can, accompanied by a harsh snare drum.

As she rounded the corner and into the small abandoned town of Springvale, she watched a strange floating mechanical orb as it patrolled back and forth along the broken streets, paying her no mind.

Over the rocks and sandy hills, she could see the shadows of what appeared to be a large metal structure. Curious, she made her way closer.

When she arrived, she had to crane her neck up to see it's entirety; a massive composition of sheet metal and scrap with what appeared to be a jet engine over the centre of it. A robot in a cowboy hat, about the same height as Maria, stood alert outside the entrance of the structure.

"W e l c o m e   to   M e g a t o n." No sooner than the robot spoke did the engine whir to life, slowly pulling two large slats of metal aside to reveal a door.

"E n j o y   y o u r   v i s i t."

"Er, thanks." Maria cleared her throat, pulled open the door and stepped into the settlement.

"Whoa..." Maria breathed, her eyes taking in the sight before her. An entire city constructed of scrap metal towered around her, bustling with wastelanders of all kinds. Down the path to the centre of the settlement sat a massive black bomb. Maria's stomach dropped at the sight.

"Well, lookee here. Another newcomer." A man's voice pulled Maria out of her awe. She turned to see a bearded, dark-skinned wastelander in a leather duster and a cattleman hat drawn over his eyes. "Hope you're not here to cause trouble."

"Oh, uh, hello," Maria stammered. "My name's Maria; nice to meet you mister..."

"Simms. Lucas Simms." He held out a hand for her to shake, tilting his chin up to make eye contact with her. He seemed to be regarding her with caution. "I'm the town's sheriff. I keep the peace around here."

"Oh, you'll get no trouble from me, Sheriff." Maria raised her hands in surrender with an easy smile. "Though, it seems you folks don't seem too concerned about danger... has anyone considered dealing with that bomb down there?"

"If any of us knew how, we would." Lucas shrugged and clicked his tongue. "Why, you volunteerin'?"

"I don't know about that - I've got a pretty basic knowledge on explosives, but nothing as dire as a bomb. Especially one of that size."

"Well, if you do find a way to disarm it for good, there's a hefty reward waiting for you." Lucas patted her shoulder. "Just don't go messing with it unless you're sure."

"No arguments here. Besides..." Maria's eyes started scanning the faces of the town's residents. "I'm really just looking for my father."

"Your father?"

"Yeah, middle-aged man, about yay tall..." Maria held her hand up higher to her father's approximate height. "We came from Vault 101 not far from here."

"Hm, can't say it rings any bells. Sorry," he shrugged. "But most folks swing by Moriarty's Saloon up the path around the edge of the walls. He might be able to point you in the right direction."

"Thanks; I'll head there next, then." Maria gave him a curt nod and started to step by him when he stopped her with a firm hand on her shoulder.

"But just a fair warning - don't trust the man." Lucas spoke low, his tone grave with his warning. "He'd sell his mother for a slice of rotting Mirelurk meat if he had one. He's not your friend, alright?"

"Thanks for the warning, Sheriff; I'll be careful."

Maria followed the path up to the saloon, and pushed the doors open.

"Come on, ya piece of junk..." a raspy man's voice grumbled over the sound of static. "Work, dammit."

Maria noticed a bartender tinkering with a hissing radio, his back turned away from her. An attractive woman with short red hair and a form-hitting sky blue jumpsuit leaned in the doorframe of a small room at the other side of the bar, rolling her eyes.

"Give it up, Gob," she sighed, taking a drag from her cigarette, leaving a trace of cherry lipstick around the stark white tip. "It's not the radio - it's GNR. Something's been up with their signal lately."

The bartender seemed to be ignoring her as he shook and smacked the radio, muttering raspy profanities under his breath. Maria slowly made her way up to the bar.

"Why-" he adjusted the antenna.

"Won't-" he fidgeted with the tuning dial.

"You-" he shook the radio with both hands.

"Work?" He smacked the side of the radio, earning him a solid two seconds of clear sound before the static returned.

"Er, excuse me, sir?" Maria tapped the man on the shoulder and nearly jumped out of her skin when he turned to face her. "JESUSFUCKINGCHRIST."

The bartender was only a few inches taller than Maria, with a ill-fitting white tee shirt and cargo pants, a dirty bar towel hanging from his pocket. However, where Maria was expecting to see a typical face - nose, flesh and all - she saw what appeared to be either a talking corpse, or the most unfortunate burn victim she ever imagined she'd see.

There was a triangular pit where a nose should be and wisps of light brown hair in frayed patches on his scalp. His eyes seemed to have once been baby blue, but had now taken on a milky gloss, fading their colour only slightly. Every patch of visible skin seemed to be covered in the same kinds of burns, revealing deep red scars, purple veins, and muscle tissue. In some places, skin seemed to be in the process of sloughing right off.

"What's the matter?" He sighed, placing the radio down, his brow bone rising as he folded his arms. "Never seen a Ghoul before?"

"A Ghoul...?" Maria gulped, feeling her heartbeat slow back to a normal pace. Not sensing that he was hostile, she took a seat at the bar as the initial shock passed. "What's that?"

"Well, not all of us got to hide out in a fancy vault when the bombs dropped." Gob gestured to the vault jumpsuit she was wearing. "Some of us got a big dose of radiation. Most of 'em died, obviously, but those of us that didn't, well..."

"And people call you Ghouls?" Maria frowned. "That doesn't seem right..."

"Well, look at the way you reacted when you saw me." He shrugged, picking up a shot glass and wiping it, moving his eyes to his task. He seemed to be masking a long-standing exhaustion on the subject. "When you've got a face like ground Brahmin meat, folks don't always treat you the best."

"I am sorry about that - I just..." Maria felt guilty about her reaction, now. "I've never seen a.... Ghoul before. I wasn't expecting it."

"S'alright, kid. Ya get used to it after a few decades."

"Though, now that that first shock has passed, well..." Maria trailed off, regarding the bartender curiously for a few seconds. "It's really not so bad."

Gob's eyes snapped back up to meet hers in shock.

"Really? Ya mean it?"

Maria did meant it. Despite his burns, she could see his eyes were still bright and expressive, and his smile, though crooked, was a kind one that made her want to smile back. He had rather broad shoulders despite his relatively lean frame, and strong hands, no doubt from his labours of work. He had the slightest belly that complimented his build surprisingly well.

"Mmhm." She gave him a genuine smile. "It's the eyes - you're very expressive."

"Well, I dunno about that..." He looked down sheepishly, fumbling with his towel. The red-haired woman watched from where she lounged just within earshot, smiling slyly at the exchange. Finally, Gob continued. "Still, even if you're just saying it to be nice, I like t' hear it. Most folks just spit in my face."

Maria frowned. "I hope you don't mean that literally."

"Well, I-"

"What the hell're ye doin', y'idiot?" an older man with shaggy white hair and a beard emerged from the room behind the bar, yanking Gob from where he had been leaning on the bar as he was speaking to Maria. The Ghoul let out a pained grunt, but made no effort to fight back. "I don't pay ye to chat - go make yourself useful!"

Maria looked to the red-haired woman who looked at the ground with a frown to avoid watching what was happening. It seemed as though this wasn't particularly surprising to her- or to any other patrons for that matter. Maria stood from her seat and pushed herself away from the bar, moving to walk around it, earning her a look of either shock or terror from the red-haired woman.

"Come here!" the white-haired man barked, raising his arm to backhand Gob as he knelt helplessly at his feet. "Ye useless waste of skin-"

"Hey!" Maria called out. When she was ignored, the man raised his hand again to strike Gob a second time. Without thinking, she rushed forward and grabbed his arm. "Stop that!"

"Fuck off!" the white-haired man shoved her to the ground, turning his attention to her. "What gives ye the right to interfere with my management, aye?"

"Management?!" Maria squeaked, realizing this must be the infamous 'Moriarty' Lucas had warned her about. "You're beating the poor man! What the hell is your problem?"

"Man? Hardly." Moriarty scoffed. He looked like he was about to approach her when Gob interjected.

"Wait, wait!" He rasped, putting himself between them with his hands up in surrender, hunching to make himself appear as small and meek as possible, shaking in fear and avoiding looking in Moriarty's eyes at all costs. "I-I'm sorry - I started talking to her and I just got carried away, that's all."

"Ye think I give a shit about your excuses?" Moriarty let out a wry laugh. "Just get back t'work, you lazy sack o' skin."

"Yes, sir...." Gob gave Maria an apologetic nod and scurried back to his place behind the bar, frantically cleaning glasses and focusing on looking as busy as possible.

"Now. Before I kick your ass out of my bar, what the hell d'ya want?" Moriarty folded his arms, glaring at Maria. "Ye don't have a drink in yer hand, after all."

"I'm looking for my father," Maria sighed and shook her head, pulling herself back to her feet and dusting herself off. "From Vault 101 - like me."

"Ohh, I see - the little baby brat from the vault's all grown up." To Maria's surprise, Moriarty's expression seemed to light up with genuine recognition. "And ye figure I'll be tellin' where yer dear ol' dad ran off to, aye?"

"That was the plan, yeah..."

"Ha! Well, ye can forget it," Moriarty scoffed, shoving past her as he flicked a cigarette between his lips. "Ye can get yer drinks and a bed here if ye've got the caps. That's the extent o' my generosity for brats that stick their nose in my business."

"But-" Maria tried to speak further, but the man was already out the door, slamming it behind him in defiant finality.

"Shit..."

"Tough break, kid." A sultry voice broke the awkward moment of silence. The red-haired woman from earlier had her arms folded as she spoke. "But that's Colin for ya. He can be a real bastard. Name's Nova, by the way."

"Pleasure to meet you, Nova." Maria sighed, slumping into a seat at the bar, watching Gob taking inventory with a clipboard, his hand still trembling. "Why is he so horrible to him?"

"Well, he treats us all like shit." Nova spoke plainly, taking a seat beside her and lighting up another cigarette. She offered one to Maria, but it was turned down. "But he treats poor Gob the worst out of all of us. Just because he's different, maybe?"

"It's not right." Maria found herself gritting her teeth at the thought.

"You don't know the half of it." Nova chuckled. "You know that asshole bought him off some slavers way back? Says he can earn his freedom if he works off his debt."

"When will that be?"

"Never." Nova dabbed her cigarette on the edge of the ashtray. "He charges him rent and board, too - so he'll never pay it off."

"What?!" Maria squeaked. "But that's just slavery!"

"And that's why he's been here for 15 years."

"Unbelievable..." Maria grumbled and shook her head. "And now he won't even tell me where my father is. What a dick."

"Hm..." Nova took another puff of her cigarette and thought to herself for a moment. "Hey, Gob."

"Hm?" He turned and walked over to the bar, eyes darting past them to the door to make sure Moriarty wasn't coming back. "What is it?"

"You think Colin's files have any info on that handsome man from the vault from earlier?"

"Are you kidding? He has dirt on everybody on that stupid terminal." He leaned in conspiratorially to speak with Nova. "Think you can give her the password? Help her out?"

"I don't know, Gob..." Nova winced with a shake of her head. "If Colin finds out, I'll be out on my ass so fast my head'll spin."

'"C'mon, Nova..." Gob pleaded. "I'll do all your errands for a week."

"You really wanna help her that bad?"

"I feel kinda bad - she almost got beat because of me." He frowned, shuffling his feet sheepishly. "No one's ever stuck up for me like that before."

"Gob..." Maria was touched. "Look, neither of you need to put yourselves at risk for my sake, alright? I'll ask around town - there must be someone else who knows something."

"Doubtful. Colin keep tabs on everyone here." Nova extinguished her cigarette and sighed. "No one'll wanna tell you anything if it'll just piss him off."

Nova clicked her tongue and thought to herself for a moment. Gob looked at her with pleading eyes, and she grinned before coming to some sort of silent conclusion.

"Alright, kid." She chuckled. "I'll tell you the password. But if anyone asks, you didn't hear it from me, okay? And Gob; you're running my errands for a month, got it?"

Gob and Maria sighed in relief. He went back to his task and Nova leaned in to whisper the password in her ear.

"Thanks, Nova!" Maria was about to slide away from the bar, but Nova gently pulled her close again to whisper into her ear again.

"Thanks for sticking your neck out for Gob. You've made a lifelong friend in him, I hope you know that."

Maria smiled and gave her a quick nod in thanks as she rushed to the backroom behind the bar, hoping she could find what she needed before Moriarty came back from his apparent smoke break.

As the hour grew late, the air cooled and the moon rose over the scraps of Megaton. Few stars could be seen through the smog, but Maria still found herself enchanted by the vastness of the open sky; and her eyes were glued to the waning moon - something she'd only ever heard about in songs and books.

Stretched out on an old, discarded couch by the community bunkers, she pulled Butch's jacket further over her shoulders and let out a heady sigh. Since Moriarty had conveniently decided to double the price of the rooms, Maria had no choice but to sleep elsewhere for the night.

So my dad's gone off to find this GNR radio station... Maria pulled out Jonas' glasses and sniffled idly, wiping off a leftover smear of blood from the frame with her sleeve. I guess I need to get to D.C. somehow.

Holding the glasses to her chest, she felt her eyes begin to well with tears.

I hope this ache goes away eventually... She wiped her eyes on her arm. I'll need to get my hands on some supplies before I even think about traveling that far. Guess I'll need to get my hands on some caps somehow.

Tucking the glasses away, she stretched out on the couch and felt sleep begin to take her.

I'll ask around in the morning. I'm sure there's something I can do around here to round up a pocket-full of caps...

"Well, I'll be damned!" Walter whistled, nodding in approval at the repaired pipes that had been giving him hell for the past few weeks. The man had one damn job in this gods-forsaken town, and it was made much harder when the water pipes had burst in three areas all at once. "You managed to patch 'em up in record time. Nice work, kid!"

"No worries, Walter; happy to help." Maria wiped the grime from her hands on the pants of her jumpsuit. She silently thanked Stanley for teaching her what he knew about maintaining the Vault's water system. "Clean water's hard to come by - it's a necessity of life, after all."

"Right you are, girl. Here you go." The mechanic handed her a handful of caps. "I know it's not a lot, but it should at least be enough to get yourself something nice."

"Thanks, Walter. I guess I should go check out this Craterside Supply I've heard so much about."

"Yeah, Moira'll be happy to help you out. She's a nice girl." Walter chuckled. "Might also be one of the strangest girls you'll ever meet, too."

"Take care." Maria gave Walter a polite pat on the shoulder before walking by him to Craterside Supply just down the walkway.

"Welcome to Craterside Supply!"

Right away, Maria was greeted by a woman in coveralls and blood orange hair. She had a spark of mischievous intelligence in her expression as she tinkered at her workbench with some sort of contraption that Maria couldn't identify.

"Hello - I'm about to take off on a bit of a long journey, and I just need something a little heftier than a switchblade." Maria counted the caps on the surface of the counter. "And maybe some food and supplies if I can afford it."

"You wouldn't happen to be heading north, would you?" The shopkeeper stopped tinkering, regarding Maria with a hopeful smile. "I could really use a research assistant!"

"A research assistant? For what?"

"Well, I'm writing a book, you see. I'm calling it 'The Wasteland Survival Guide' written by Moira Brown." She practically bounced with excitement at the thought. "It's going to save so many lives once it's written and out there in the hands of those poor souls out wandering the wastes."

"Why not just do this research yourself?"

"What? I'd get myself killed out there!" Moira scoffed. Maria appreciated her willingness to speak so candidly. "I need someone who can handle themselves out there."

"Does it pay well?" Maria raised an eyebrow. "I could really use the caps."

"You won't just get caps." Moira beamed. "You'll get supplies, new gadgets, and best of all - the very best survival skills that you can only get by being put in dangerous and traumatic situations!"

Maria stared at Moira in silence for about ten seconds, noting the shopkeeper's complete lack of concern from what she'd just said.

"That..." Maria trailed off. "...sounds awful."

"Pfft - nooo!" Moira shook her head with a flick of her wrist. "I think you'll find the rewards far outweigh the near-death experiences. So whaddaya say?!"

Well, this could be my opportunity to get my hands on the supplies I need... Maria sighed. "What's first?"

"You'll do it?!" Moira bounced and clapped her hands excitedly. "What do you know about radiation sickness, scavenging and... landmines?"

Maria gulped, somewhat dreading what she may be agreeing to.

TLDR

• Maria arrives at Megaton and makes a good impression on Lucas Simms; she has some knowledge on explosives, but not enough to disarm the bomb at this time.

• Maria meets Gob and Nova at Moriarty's Saloon. Having never seen a ghoul before, Maria is spooked by Gob's appearance at first, but when they start talking and she realizes that he's friendly, she warms up to him quickly and even admits to finding him oddly charming.

• Moriarty catches Gob conversing with Maria and starts to beat him - Maria jumps in to stop him and gets knocked to the ground. Before Moriarty turns on her Gob manages to convince him to stop. Moriarty refuses to tell Maria anything about her father's whereabouts and leaves the saloon to have a smoke.

• Nova is hesitant to help Maria at first, but between Maria's willingness to be so kind to Gob, and with Gob practically begging her to to help, she finally agrees to give Maria the password to Moriarty's personal terminal.

• Maria finds out her father has gone to D.C. and was headed to the GNR Radio Station.

• Moriarty doubled the price of the rooms at the saloon for the night, forcing Maria to use the old, discarded couch outside the common quarters. She laments about her losses and makes a plan to scrounge some bottlecaps together to try and get her hands on some more supplies before she makes the long journey.

• She helps Walter fix up the busted water pipes around Megaton; thankfully, she has some decent knowledge on repairs since Stanely taught her a few things about the Vault's water system maintenance way back. He hands her some caps and points her in the direction of Craterside Supply.

• Maria meets Moira at her shop and learns that she's in the midst of writing a 'Wasteland Survival Guide.' Moira asks Maria for help with some research in exchange for caps, supplies, gadgets, etc. Maria agrees.

Day 9!

It took her the better half of a month to get home. 

One fearful night spent easing herself from the train yard terminal, the roof creaking at every movement she made, and another army crawling on her belly out of the trainyard itself.

The day she spent under the building’s foundation, too tired to continue but too anxious to rest, was the longest day of her life. She didn’t dare make a sound, taking shallow breaths as she waited. Watching raiders mill about, learning their patterns. All this while only several feet from the pile of bodies decomposing in the sun.

She had to crawl past the pile that night, feeling eyes against her skull as she went. Sightless eyes, like stars in the sky, watching her every move. She didn’t stop crawling till the trainyard was just a dot in the distance, wouldn’t even turn her pip-boy screen on to check the map.

Crazy Wolfgang found her, a mile or so outside of Springvale. The otherwise chatty merchant was stunned into silence as she emerged over the horizon, head down and limping. Talk was small and far between as he escorted her the rest of the way to Megaton.

“Honest, didn’t expect to run into you out here,” He had commented, a hesitance unbefitting of the charismatic, if not eccentric, trader, “Or at all.”

She didn’t answer. Too focused on watching her bare feet scrape against the cracked asphalt, mourning the absence of her red high-top sneakers in silence. She tapped the empty bottle of water rhythmically against her leg as she went.

He cast a worried look her way but didn’t press her silence. It was clear as crystal that something had happened. Something awful.

As the caravanner and wanderer approached the gates to Megaton, something caught her eye. Among the debris and trash that littered the outskirts of Megaton laid a familiar pile of scrap.

She slowed to a stop, following the trail of junk with wide eyes. Pieces of scrapped Giddy Up Buttercup parts, some old motorcycle engines, miscellaneous scrap, and repurposed snack boxes that she knew housed intricate bits of computer parts. The bent visage of a very specific Vault Tec Bobblehead confirmed it.

This was her junk.

What the hell was it doing here?

Crazy Wolfgang said something, but the thumping in her ears tuned him out as she shook. Palms aching as she dug her nails deep into the flesh there. The lone wanderer stormed past, eyes watery and focused, through Megaton’s straining gates.

It was like she wore blinders, ducking through the gate before it was fully opened, feet pounding against the dirt with purpose. She shoved past gawking residences before she caught the cowboy hat in the distance.

“Simms!”

Her voice was still foreign to her ears. Husky and gruff, barely quenched from the scavenged bottle of dirty water she’d found earlier.  

The sheriff jumped, wheeling around to face the lone wanderer. Her chest puffed exhausted, labored breaths rendering her speechless as she stood before him.

Her vault suit was on the bomb.

Why was her vault suit hanging from the damn bomb?

She tasted blood again, cutting her still tender tongue up against her chipped teeth as she seethed. Was this an eviction? Was she robbed? Why would they throw all her shit out while she was away? It was only a month!

After all the shit she’s put up with, everything she’s done to help, was it not good enough for them? Were they so ready to get rid of her once the opportunity showed itself?

“You’re gonna get us all killed!”

That woman’s voice rang in her ears, deafening as that dead woman’s words shook her to the core. She tasted blood and saw red.

Suddenly she was back in the Vault, alarms blaring rendering her deft and blind as she struggled to evade guards, residents and radroaches alike. Over the alarms she can make out the words that they had screeched at her as she sobs, a lost little girl looking for daddy.

“Useless!”

“Worthless!”

“This is all your fault!”

She should have just died then. The overseer should have killed her. The raiders should have killed her. The fall should have killed her. She should be rotting away with those other women in the tower or joining them in an unmarked grave.

She was barely nineteen.

It wasn’t fair.

She felt hot tears leak from her eyes, bringing her back to the present as she hummed with insecurities and fury. Unaware of the internal struggle, Simms was rendered mute, stunned into silence at the sight before him.

“Praise Atom! Our heroine lives!” Confessor Cromwell cried from his place behind Sheriff Simms. As he raised to join the pair, she noticed flowers and candles littered the ground near his feet. Offerings of scrap and caps, parchment notes, nuka cola bottles housing flowers.

They held a service for her.

The angry tears subsided. Her knuckles cracking as her hands twitched into fists at her side. Her lip quivered, tears slowing to a stop as she takes in the scene. Knees buckling, Simms barely catching her before she thumped to the ground. Like dead weight, her body couldn’t stay up any longer.

She kneeled before the bomb, Simms comforting her and Confessor Cromwell praising her safe return as she wept.

They thought she was dead.

okay so we’re starting off with our leader! hmm... i’d say that he has a geo vision

why? idk, i’m half sure it’s based off how calm and composed he is; i do kinda think jungwon is a picture of maturity and elegance (he literally has to take care of six children wdym)

it was kinda hard for me to choose a weapon because i kept going back-and-forth from sword to polearm, but my final pick for him would be polearm

yes this would mean that he is zhongli

a polearm would probably suit him because i see him as the kind to want some kind of control over his weapon (not saying he can’t control a sword). at the same time i feel like he’d want something lightweight which won’t bring him down

i think he’d work with the knights of favonius. working with the liyue qixing could also work for him, but considering the tension between the adepti and the qixing + the social climate of liyue makes me think that he’d want somewhere more calm

this one theory i’ve read says that hydro vision users have a strong sense of morality and justice (i guess i also interpreted it as balance) and heeseung seems like the kind of person who does

for weapon, i think he’d prefer to use a sword. we see that he’s good in a lot of areas when it comes to being an idol, so he’d perhaps want that versatility in the weapon he uses as well

i don’t see him particularly associating himself to any organization, so i think he’d simply be a wanderer. he goes from country to country as a vagabond, battling monsters along the way in order to perfect his skills

at the same time, i also see him making a lot of friends and having a bunch of connections from just about any corner of the land (more to acquaintances i suppose? heeseung doesn’t seem like the kind to let people in very quickly)

is probably very curious on elemental reactions and might be studious in a way; he would want to learn alchemy

likes stopping by mondstadt’s library when he needs to look up on something. probably keeps in contact with alchemists too

pyro vision, hands down. i was considering an electro vision for him at first but the amount of passion he has in doing the things he loves (primarily hip-hop) screams pyro to me

he would also have a claymore because let’s be real, he’d want something to get the job done quick; claymores are literally the weapon that causes the most damage

yeah he’d be diluc. or xinyan. whatever your pick is

association... i think he’d be a part of the adventurer’s guild. he strikes me as the kind of person who’d want some kind of reward for something he does for fun (in this case, mora. and a bunch of other items you can get from katheryne once you complete your daily commissions)

this is probably how he meets all his friends. if he wasn’t a part of any association, i don’t think he’d have many (not saying that he’s unable to make friends, he’d choose not to unless necessary)

strives to be a well-known adventurer, probably takes up more commissions than the average one

likes spending time in places with good ambience, food, and booze. probably is a regular at angel’s share and liyue’s street food stalls on days he comes to town

i think he’d have an electro vision. it’s something about the way he fiercely cares for other people that makes me think that this suits him best

okay hear me out but i think he’d be amazing with a bow and arrow. he seems to have the tenacity and upper body strength for it, and i don’t think he’d particularly want something that could do a quick kill, like a sword or claymore per se

uhh... yeah he’d be fischl, i suppose. idk this realization was a bit weird to me but it doesn’t seem so far off from happening

sometimes uses his skills to shoot at fruit from trees; it’s a pretty good party trick

okay so i know this is stereotypical but... cryo vision. honestly, having a geo vision would also be possible but remember that one time childe said something around the lines of the goddess of cryo having such a warm heart and she loved so much to the point it froze? yeah i think i’m basing him off the tsaritsa-

weapon would be a sword. i considered choosing a polearm for him but i think he’d want something slightly heavier that would get the job done, but not necessarily a claymore. do i think he has the capacity to use a claymore if he wanted to, though? sure why not

also seems like the kind to wander around the city when things start to calm down for the day; if he’s not being tasked on a mission, he sometimes likes to head out to huaguang stone forest

okay i think he’d have an anemo vision (and this is not because he reminds me of venti). there was another theory that said that anemo vision-holders are hard workers who sometimes don’t give themselves enough rest, and sunoo seems to make the cut. he’s crazy hardworking at things he know he’s lacking at and strives to improve

i think he’d have a catalyst (yes!! we need male catalyst characters!!); i can see him absolutely fascinated by the way catalysts work like... “there’s no solid object engineering the attacks so... what is that? it seems so cool!”

i hope you’ve realized that you’ve opened up pandora’s box by asking me this question. its also incredibly broad, so i could go in like multiple directions.

uh i guess i’ll start with saying, I really hate the concept of the Maxson’s Brotherhood taking jurisdiction of The CW. It’s not obviously outright canon, but a lot of insinuations can be made about how much they expanded in the capital in fo4. I also saw some hc on a reddit post that pissed me off so hard that it made me vehemently hate the idea of it. 

I’ve made a post about it before but I think after establishing Temple of The Union for Hannibal, that eventually by 2287, it’s evolved into a settlement and his crusade against slavers in the capital wasteland gains enough influence for general volunteer militia (akin to the minutemen of the commonwealth) for the Capital Wasteland. A predictable enough name for the settlement would be Lincoln, though the militia themselves would probably go by something different. Asides from being the hub for the militia, it’s a refuge for wastelanders, and has a strong focus in teaching self defense in a manner of ways, and education. I find that vastly more likeable than anything involving the bos bc I like the cw to maintain it’s independence and be something like, city-states somewhat. Also I view the bos to be like cringy army recruiters.

I also like to think by 2287, Megaton has expanded to include the Springvale ruins that have since been in the process of rebuild. Rivet City, despite losing Dr.Li has probably made a lot of progress irt growing less/non irradiated food with hydroponics, thanks to vault 101 opening and sharing their build plans/etc. Plus I have never seen a problem with cars being a thing in fallout, since theyre used by the ncr, and the chosen one drives one in fo2. So I think Rivet City mechanics (I like to think rivet city has mechanics that work on the pre war fighter jets lol) and scientists rework pre war car engines to run on electricity. Im not a science geek, but it’s definitely feasible. So long haul caravans outside of the CW become more common, farmers/ranchers sharing produce becomes easier as well. 

Anyways in self indulgent kookoo crazy ari land. (YOU CAN STOP READING HERE IM INSANE PAST THIS) My general (not cleaned up) timeline for Andrés post fallout 3, is by July 2278 he wakes up out of his coma, which he was in for about 6/7 months. by August, his daughter pops out, because him and Amata had sad breakup sex during trouble on the homefront lawl. Andrés suffers from radiation sickness for several years, though its more severe the first year. No he does not become a ghoul because thats just not my vibe. His immune system becomes very fucked up though, I havent thought about it extensively enough to go too deep into it. But don’t worry he still has hot potent dad nut. And by 22 him and Amata have a son (medical insemination like I said they moved on before their daughter was born) who’s born in like March 2280. They love each other still, but as best friends, and why not have another kid with your best friend. But On Purpose This Time. By 2286 Andrés and Butch tie the knot because they’ve been dating for like 8 years. In 2288 Amata has a kid with Freddie Gomez (they had a relationship of a few years beforehand), does Andrés feel awkward about it ? yes, he suffers from overprotective misogyny LOL. But he gets over it. Dogmeat has a few litters over the years (girl dogmeat is canon in my heart) and they keep one, they name it Junior. Dogmeat passes away in 2291. Entry 3: The importance of personal marketing, branding and your unique value proposition

Personal branding is as important as ever in an era where attentions spans are getting shorter. Making a memorable and solid first impression on some of your written documents is a key way to getting you ahead of the pack. (Heitzman, A. 2022). In a competitive job market, not necessarily with our internships but in the future, a good personal brand can be the difference in you being shortlisted or not. 'It results from what others think and say about you when you’re not in the room or overall your reputation' (Heitzman, A. 2022). Personal branding/marketing is also becoming increasingly important in the digital age. Whether it’s a public social media account, or a completed LinkedIn page.

Unique value proposition or otherwise known as a unique selling point is simply a concise statement used by individuals to prove that they are superior to their competitors relevant to the job they're applying to. My Unique proposition is something I have thought about, and I've come up with my previous industry experience with Bentleigh Greens in 2019 as well as the Holmesglen degree over the last two years where I have completed work-related practice with VAFA clubs in marketing and sponsorship, and journalism work with Springvale Lions baseball club. Specifically with Bentleigh Greens, learning at a young age how to use photoshop to create social media designs as well as conduct post-match interviews and write match reports is a fantastic differential to have compared to others. 

"Certain personal brands like 'experience' and 'professionalism' are associated with competence" (Rangarajan et. al, 2017). It’s also important to represent warmth, kindness, humility and a personality through texts like a cover letter or resume as these are specific traits regarding organisational culture that most employers are looking for. (Rangarajan et. al, 2017). Relating to our internships, a passion for sports and expressing yourself through media is something I will mention at the start of my cover letter and resume, not only because it’s important to add for a potential interview but because these are the best qualities to show off to sport organisations looking for an active intern. 

This week, I learnt what my Unique Value proposition is and am currently preparing for the interview process of these internships. Some of these internship roles will be competitive between us as classmates so this is a good starting point.

Spoilers for chapter 9 of Homuncular Nature!

Kaeya’s position in the Knights

Yes. I’m aware. In fact, I went to the wiki while writing the chapter to check the teams in the Knights and their jobs.

Albedo is the Chief Alchemist. If he occupies most of his time with research, then why is he the head of a team that would have conflicting intensive time-consuming work such as criminal investigation? Mind you, this is a non-canon interpretation because we don’t get much info on the teams, but I think Investigation refers to research rather than detective-like investigation. While Albedo proved in the Irodori event that he’d be a very adept detective/criminal investigator, research aligns much better with Albedo’s role as Chief Alchemist and his and Sucrose’s roles within the Knights. Sucrose must be affiliated with the Knights because the patterns on her clothes are shown usually in Knight characters or uniforms, but she doesn’t mention investigating criminal work in her voice lines or stories. If she’s Albedo’s subordinate, we could reasonably guess that she is also a part of the Investigation Team. Two principal members of the Investigation Team who have done no investigation lead me to believe that Investigation is perhaps a bit of a misnomer, and their job is actually to research and engineer scientific or alchemical solutions to the Knights’ problems. This means they are also probably see less combat than, say, the Cavalry.

On the other hand, we’ve seen in Kaeya’s story quest and other events including him that he does do investigative work, catching the Abyss’s movements or making arrests. The Cavalry implies a combatant unit, but we haven’t seen any other members so far; the wiki attributes this to most of them being on an expedition with Grandmaster Varka. We know that Diluc used to also be the Cavalry Captain before retiring from the position, and that he thereafter went on to individually investigate and exact vigilante justice on the Fatui and the Abyss. Diluc may have had prior experience with investigative work, something Kaeya does now, implying that in part, the Cavalry Captain’s duties include some degree of criminal investigation. If he’s a captain, Kaeya also has command over troops to help with his investigative work. No captain is in complete isolation from their team, and therefore I assumed that part of the Cavalry helped Kaeya with investigation.

Putting that aside, I only brought them up in a few sentences at the beginning of Albedo’s interrogation scene, and these details were irrelevant to pretty much the entire chapter. Why question it? For all intents and purposes, the Knights don’t exist to anyone but Albedo because the setting has only been Amestris. I was only using them in those paragraphs to compare with the Amestrian military, and show how Albedo conceptualizes the differences.

Though the Knights and the Amestrian military are both the main military forces of their respective countries, the Knights are an exclusive organization, since they have tests for joining that even Noelle couldn’t pass on brute strength alone. The Knights are looking for quality over quantity, and because of that, their force is limited, but this suits them because Teyvat is peaceful. So far, we haven’t seen any countries beefing with each other, and Mondstadt is such an isolated city that they hardly see any enemies besides monsters, and there’s never any political dispute besides maybe the Lawrence clan stirring things up. Not to mention, Mondstadt is small, the smallest of all the nations we’ve seen so far, with all its citizens (besides Diluc and Dawn Winery residents and Springvale residents) residing within walls surrounded by a lake.

As opposed to the Knights, Amestris is a much larger and much more powerful military organization, owing to its sheer size. Yes, Amestris has more people, but also they’re a military state. They’re not going through a careful testing and vetting process like the Knights are; they’re looking for quick recruits and power in numbers. They value quantity over quantity, but that scale means that infiltration is possible and easy, which is why they have internal investigations for crimes of officers, and why they could arrest Maria Ross in FMAB and Albedo in HN. This is something that would not happen in Mondstadt, because Knights are largely regarded and trustworthy and are carefully selected, maintaining a system of interior trust that Amestris cannot.

I had hoped to convey all of this in less words, since this really wasn’t the point of the chapter. I really do think hard about all this stuff. So yes, I do know.

Forgetting Albedo’s cunningness

Please don’t recommend watching them. For avoidance of doubt, I have watched them. Many times, in fact; I show them to my friends and analyze the animation of them a lot. I’ve been playing the game since 1.0 and I haven’t missed a single event or quest that includes Albedo.

I assume that you’re referring to three situations in particular when referencing those two events and his story quest: 1) Albedo hiding after the avalanche to draw out the impostor, 2) Albedo hiding the fifth portrait with the water-activated ink to reveal to only the Traveler after the festival that the fifth Gokasen was modeled after Scaramouche, and 3) Albedo lying to the Traveler that their results are ordinary when they in fact are not. While yes, these are good signs of his cunningness and wit, I believe all of them can show a lot more.

Scenario 1 specifically is a good display of Albedo’s tendency to hold people at arm’s length and try to handle issues himself. While he did to some degree use the Traveler, Eula, Amber, and Bennet’s unawareness of his plans to make sure they acted normal with the impostor, this ultimately culminated in the escalation of problems when Eula figured out that it wasn’t Albedo and the impostor attacked the group, forcing Albedo to step in and help them kill it. Albedo ensured that he was the only one in the group with all the information, telling little to none of it to the others, who could’ve helped plan a way for him to capture the Fell Flower without a violent confrontation.

We believe that Albedo keeps his homuncular nature a secret by necessity, but what would actually be the consequences of revealing to Mondstadt that he’s a homunculus? Maybe he gets ostracized for being different, but it’s not like he’ll be captured and studied or experimented on; he’s the Chief Alchemist and literally the boss of any Knights-affiliated researcher. He is an indispensable asset to Mondstadt as a captain to one of the Knights’ teams, and we know that Mondstadt isn’t mean to foreigners by how they treat the Traveler, who everyone knows is some kind of Outlander. The only thing that may have concrete consequences to reveal is that he may lose himself and attack Mondstadt someday for yet unexplained reasons, because that makes him a direct danger to Mond, but that’s not something he needs to reveal along with him being a homunculus. If there are no real consequences, why doesn’t he reveal himself? He’s hiding, and maybe a secretive person by nature. We get to know everything about him because we as the Traveler are privy to all information about all characters by main character syndrome, but barring the Traveler, the only people who know about him are people who were told or had to know, like Alice. This is the sort of secret that he could even reveal to just a few select people that he trusts not to tell others, like Sucrose, but he doesn’t. His handling of the situation in Shadows Amidst Snowstorms and his general circumstances in Mondstadt reveal that maybe even if he is close to or trusts people, he doesn’t trust them with his secrets.

Now, Scenario 2 is an event that is very Kazuha-centric, so I can’t say I paid as much attention to Albedo as I did to Kazuha, but this is Albedo in a very low-stakes situation. He is not in the country he loves, nor is there any direct danger to the people he loves. For all intents and purposes he’s enjoying himself at a festival where he gets to make deductions and lead the team to different clues, but the clues lead to a story of the past that is completely irrelevant to him. I think Albedo is honestly just having fun being witty here, since he really could have just left the final painting blank, seeing as the public ate it up with a few pretty words from him about personal interpretation. There is maybe some slight danger of drawing Scaramouche’s attention by painting him for the public to see, but it’s from the backside and Albedo could excuse it as coincidental resemblance. Again, this is Albedo in low stakes, having fun drawing, and he chooses to hide a secret in plain sight, as a treat for only those privy to the information. This may show that he in fact enjoys being in the know about something that a vast majority of people aren’t aware of, which is cunning yes, but also indicative of general secretiveness, as is Scenario 1.

Scenario 3! Why does Albedo not tell the Traveler that they have unique results? Albedo himself points out parallelism between him and the Traveler, saying that they are both composed of substances that have yet to be fully defined. They’re both outsiders to Mondstadt, and Albedo has found definitive physical proof of this. But he chooses not reveal this to the Traveler, who is beloved by the citizens of Mondstadt already, saving the Traveler the burden of having a secret to hide from everyone, because if they don’t know their own secret, then they have no fear of it being revealed. I think this suggests that further than Albedo not trusting people with his secret(s), he’s actually afraid of them being revealed.

Now we head into more heavy interpretation, so not really canon. Why is Albedo afraid of his secrets being revealed? As covered before, there wouldn’t be severe consequences, and he could just tell a few trusted confidants. My belief is that it stems from a lack of understanding in people and human behavior. If he tells them one thing, he only has his own statistical estimation of their probability of telling others and that probability is never 0. One leads to many, and many people knowing means he loses his prized secrecy. Or, maybe he feels inclined to tell someone one thing, but who’s to say it won’t escalate to telling them something that will have consequences, like him being a danger to Mondstadt? I don’t think he’s experienced in interacting with humans, having only traveled with Rhinedottir before coming to Mondstadt. Mondstadt also had to be a relatively recent development, since no one has commented on him not changing— people age, and if he doesn’t, I think they would notice after a decent amount of years.

This is the interpretation that I’ve written 78k words of Homuncular Nature with, and I don’t think I’ve broken from it a single time. Fundamentally, Albedo doesn’t understand human interaction and human behavior, but this fic has been about pushing him to experience it, giving him friends and enemies and people to love and hate. A lot of event content about Albedo shows that he’s still pretty isolated from Mondstadt, being able to perfectly avoid people or disappear while people aren’t watching. There’s no way for him to do that in Amestris, in Central especially, because he’s on his own in a world he’s unfamiliar with and surrounded by people at the same time. He needs to make connections himself because he doesn’t have Rhinedottir’s letter or Alice’s reputation. Thus, we get a lot of Albedo figuratively floundering on how to talk to and hug people whereas everyone else sees him as uptight, perfect, maybe aloof and cold. Albedo certainly has cunning, but mostly in situations where he holds all the information. He’s still gathering information right now, and has no room to be tricky when he’s also concerned with keeping his secrets in a place with heavier consequences for revealing it and balancing that secrecy with enough trust in people to get him places.

Not to mention, in this chapter in particular, Albedo is experiencing grief for practically the first time. Rhinedottir did not tangibly die, nor is her disappearance absolutely final. None of the friends he’s made in Mondstadt have come close to dying because almost all his friends are capable fighters and Mondstadt is a pretty peaceful place. Hughes dying is not something he can solve, and he has to confront and come to terms with that, leading ultimately to his self destructive behavior in the chapter. In an emotionally vulnerable state, where he is physically unhealthy and exhausted, he is cornered. Albedo is running on 6-7 hours of sleep and has been awake for 36 hours. Coming off the guilt of not being able to do anything to save Hughes, the homunculi are offering him two options— agree to their terms and keep Hughes safe on his own terms, or oppose them and have hell rained on him. There is no room for being cunning, especially when his opposition is an army the size of which he can’t even fathom, because Teyvat’s medieval cities and towns can’t hold a candle to the sheer population and size of Amestris. He doesn’t have enough knowledge to hold over them and hide from them, and they know too much about him. Maybe he’ll get his turn to be cunning later, but he sure as hell isn’t in any position to be now.

Albedo’s inactive Vision

Thanks for pointing that out. I started writing this in early winter 2021 fresh after Albedo’s 1.2 event and a rewatch of FMAB. Inazuma was not a thing, and all the lore we had to go on for Visions was that they were proof of the wielder’s connection to Celestia. I went on my yearlong hiatus Autumn of last year, either before or around the time 2.0 was released. Albedo’s Vision is so largely irrelevant to the fic so far that I haven’t gone to the effort of changing that detail in Chapter 1, and honestly, I don’t think I will. We don’t know what happens if a Vision wielder is separated from Celestia, because in Genshin, there is no place far away enough from Celestia except for maybe other worlds the Traveler twins have visited, which are irrelevant to the game and likely won’t ever be brought up. A one-directional causation (death causing an inactive vision) does not guarantee an exclusive relationship, where a Vision can only be inactive if the wielder is dead.

First five star bias

This means nothing to me. My first five star was Qiqi and I now have had enough of her (hahah she’s C3 ;v;)

Jokes aside, to be honest I quite disliked Albedo’s character design at first, thinking that the bright gold inner lining of the hood clashed too much with the blue of his shirt. His 1.2 event and story quest really won me over, and he’s been my unparalleled favorite since. It’s a bit cheesy to say, but I do base a lot of my interpretation of Albedo on myself, albeit with certain things like secrecy and social awkwardness extremely dialed up.

I understand having a bias towards Albedo because I’ve literally written more than 78k words about him, going through drafts upon drafts for chapters. I don’t think having a bias towards a certain character gives us any entitlement to impose our characterizations of them on anyone else, seeing as we’re not even the creators nor the original writers of the character. Full knowledge of a character is reserved only for the one who created the character, and we as fans can only interpolate and interpret what we can from what they decide to show us.

Conclusion

The thing is, I wouldn’t offended by this comment if it didn’t seem to assume that I haven’t done my research or watched source material. I assure you I’m extremely thorough about the details, especially now that I feel extra pressure to be, with so many readers. I didn’t expect for this fic to become a big thing, and it brings me great joy to see a lot of people talking about it and telling me they enjoyed it! If you didn’t enjoy it, fine, I accept valid criticism. Someone once respectfully commented that I don’t write Nina childlike enough, and they’re absolutely right! I have no idea how children work nor do I have any desire to interact with them in any capacity. There are many flaws in Homuncular Nature due to a lack of planning in the early stages and because it’s not beta read, since I don’t really trust anyone enough to beta read for me, and because the people I would trust to beta read haven’t watched FMAB or played Genshin. I don’t claim that it’s perfect. I know it’s not. I only ask that you acknowledge that I’ve put a lot of thought into it.
