One of the insightful conclusions in the carousel for the post by @kyivindependent_official with the caption: “Editorial: America is folding. Europe, will you step up?” 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost_ . . . As the week unfolded, the world watched as U.S. President Donald Trump and his team — a group of people who pride themselves on being artful dealmakers — threw away any possible leverage they may have had over Russia. They brought Putin back to the table, took NATO off of Ukraine’s, and said a return to pre-invasion borders was unrealistic.
Trump’s words and actions signal a change of course that is bleak for Ukraine and the free world. He acts like he isn’t just going to let Russia win the war but is ready to help it win.

Free Jimmy Lai!
Recent years, the world has witnessed the suppression of free speech and the stifling of democratic values in various regions. One prominent figure caught in the crossfire is Jimmy Lai, a Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy activist. Lai's unwavering commitment to the principles of freedom and democracy has led to his imprisonment, sparking global concern about the erosion of basic human rights. As advocates for a free and open society, it is crucial to rally support for the release of Jimmy Lai.
Since his arrest in August 2020, Mr Lai has been held in solitary confinement in a maximum-security prison for more than 1,000 days. The trial, which has been delayed for a year, is expected to last for about 80 days.
We have a responsibility to stand up against the erosion of democratic values and the suppression of basic human rights. Governments, activists, and citizens worldwide must unite in calling for the immediate release of Jimmy Lai. International pressure is crucial in demonstrating that the world is watching and will not tolerate the suppression of those who advocate for freedom, democracy, and the rule of law.
Jimmy Lai serves as a stark reminder that the fight for freedom and democracy is ongoing. Advocates for human rights, press freedom, and democracy must come together to demand the release of Jimmy Lai and condemn the actions that led to his imprisonment. By doing so, we send a powerful message that the world stands united in its commitment to protecting fundamental rights and values for all.

Ukraine has a dire need for Patriot air defense systems to save lives, protect vital energy infrastructure, and enable democracy to prevail over autocracy. 🇺🇦💙💛🇺🇦
#Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . Ukraine requires advanced air defense systems to safeguard its energy infrastructure from Russian missile and drone attacks, aiming to prevent power outages as electricity demand nears winter peak levels this summer, Energy Minister German Galushchenko said on April 6.
Russia has intensified its missile and drone strikes against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, launching large-scale attacks on energy facilities across the country. Among Moscow’s targets were the Kaniv Hydroelectric Power Plant in Cherkasy Oblast, the Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant in Chernivtsi Oblast, and Zaporizhzhia’s Dnipro Hydroelectric Power Plant.
“The destruction was significant in power generation and in electricity transmission. The situation is difficult,” Galushchenko told Bloomberg. “We still do not understand the scale of damage as many facilities are still in rubble, and we can’t reach them.”
In an interview with national television on April 6, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on international partners to provide Ukraine with modern air defense systems to defend against Russian attacks.
As Moscow increased its attacks, the shortage of air defense systems in Ukraine became more tangible, particularly in the territories near the front line.
“I will not tell you how many Patriot systems we have. I can say that, to cover Ukraine completely in the future, it is preferable to have 25 Patriot systems, with six to eight batteries each,” Zelensky said.
Official estimates for the total energy losses have not yet been determined, but the magnitude of the damage could potentially amount to billions of dollars, the minister said.
Russian attacks have damaged or completely destroyed 80% of the thermal generating capacity of Ukraine's largest private energy company, DTEK.
Ukraine is seeking energy equipment to replace its damaged machinery.
“Depending upon the situation in July and August, we will ask people to save as much as possible,” Galushchenko said. “The Russians can’t cause a repeat of the blackouts of 2022 and 2023. Even in the case of huge damage, we’ll have basic generation that covers 30% to 50% of our needs.”

To ensure a peaceful and prosperous future for the world, strong democracies are essential and indispensable. 🇺🇦🗳️💙💛📜🇺🇦 #Repost @kyivindependent_official with @use.repost . . . If democracy had its own doomsday clock, it would be at two minutes to midnight. According to the most recent analysis by Varieties of Democracy (known as V-Dem), 72% of the world’s population lived in autocracies last year, compared to 50% a decade ago. For the first time in more than two decades, there are more authoritarian regimes than liberal democracies – and we are not doing enough to address this threat. The reversal has been stunning. In the Philippines, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., won last year’s presidential election, 36 years after a popular revolt overthrew his father’s dictatorship. In Brazil, millions still refuse to accept former president Jair Bolsonaro’s defeat to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced its citizens to rise up against a genocidal occupier. And in Egypt, the last vestiges of resistance to autocracy have been forced into the shadows. On every continent, illiberal politicians are portraying democracy as an impractical historical relic. We must do more to stop this rapid democratic backsliding. During World War II, when democracy was similarly threatened, the free world came together to bring about a more peaceful international order. The multilateral system that was established in 1944 at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, and by the creation of the United Nations the following year, led to decades of relative stability and international cooperation on human rights.
