a rec from my bestie! this is The sound of young women trying to make it in indie pop in the mid 2020s. all her songs sound roughly the same, so if you like this one you’re in luck. very very easy vibe setting music to have on in the background and putter around. this sounds mean but it is the tuesdaysong pick, i did like it, i simply don’t have much commentary about it

little bit lighter on trying books out this week, bc i listened to twelve hours of audiobook while making this dress and am chewing on Cahokia Jazz by Francis Spufford courtesy of a rec from @blysse-and-blunder. alt history jazz age noir-ish murder mystery, what if the Mississippi cultures did not fall and endured to the present age as their own state, Cahokia, within America? it’s yummy delicious so far, i’m about halfway through but work has been So busy this week which really cuts into my reading time.

The Haves and Have-Yachts by Evan Osnos (read by the author) is a series of essays on oligarchs and badly-behaved American aristocrats that is worth it just for the opening essay on superyachts. genuinely fascinating deep dive on how they’re made, how they’re maintained, and what people do on them. luckily the rest of the book with more of a focus on white collar financial true (alleged) crime is just as good. i had an excellent twelve hours with it while sewing.

both of these books are leaving my home: they were at a thrift store that almost exclusively carries cookbooks and christian self-help so it felt like more of a rescue situation. the one on the left, Fuzzy Sapiens by H. Beam Piper, has a really godawful pidgin the legally-not-ewoks speak that is not a pleasant reading experience. the one on the right, Stormtrack by James Sutherland, is tightly plotted and well written, bc this is still the era of scifi where you were expected to publish minimum five short stories and novellas and interview thirty working scientists before embarking on your own scifi full length novel, but this novel is very heavy on academic infighting and workplace straight up fighting, which stressed me out real bad. both of these were DNFs.

here’s the thing. taping one million sheets of paper together is extremely tiresome but using the office printers and stealing tape from the office is free and getting them printed on plotter paper at an actual printer’s is Not free. so we suffer i suppose.

similarly, this is all by hand bc none of the sewing machines in my home are operational. people in my life have been horrified by this but hand sewing 1/8 to 1/4 inch long running stitches (even when french hemming skirt hems) simply doesn’t take that long. all the edges are pinked, but i think i will go back and whipstitch the edges on the armscyce bc traditionally that is a place i am rough on my clothes.

anyway. remember those floral sheets from last week? i have used one and a half of them (plus two pillowcases and a little bit of the gray sheet to mock out the bodice and make the lining) to create this

i have a number of beefs with this pattern. i think a closely fitted, lined bodice was too ambitious for a return to sewing (despite my MANY opinions about commercially available apparel, i have not made anything more complex than an apron in more than a decade). also, some parts of this pattern (sleeve hems) are straight up incorrect. that bitch should not be an inch casing folded over twice, eating up two inches of sleeve. it should be an inch TOTAL. it also does Not give any tips or hints for making sure your all your skirt and bodice seams align, no real guidance on elastic, and i find the notching inadequate. not really a confident beginner project, more like an easier one-day project written for an experienced sewist.

however. as a very results-oriented bitch i am a firm believer in any project is a good first project if you want the results enough. so we are chugging along it’s just less fun and taking longer than i want it to.

i extended the bust panel as laid out in the helpful accompanying video bc this is patterned for a b cup (lol). i also combined on the fold and extended the largest mirrored skirt panels to take advantage of the fact i had an entire twin bedsheet’s width available to me. partially for more fullness and partially for less waste, but unfortunately this kind of eliminates the ability to put pockets in the side seams bc there are no side seams on the skirt. i Could have cut this pattern out on fabric in a more sensible manner, but i did want most of the rose vines running a specific way. the roses are a little too large and busy to effectively pattern match so i simply didn’t bother other than making sure all the grainlines ran in roughly the same directions. i think i still ended up with some bodies pieces at a 90 degree angle from the skirt but again. this pattern is very busy. so i am not too pressed. to be very blunt about it, i think people will mostly be looking at my tits in this dress and not necessarily the dress itself.

with the downfall of joanns i had to go to two different local quilt shops, neither of which carried trims or zippers, and ended up at a florist supply shop for trims and walmart for the zipper bc my other local option is hobby lobby and im going to continue my lifelong streak of never setting foot in a hobby lobby. the novelty trim has about twenty yards and the picot is FIFTY YARDS. and both of them together cost $11. i WILL be returning to that shop for all my polyester grosgrain needs. i am going to stack the picot + novelty like so for the drawstrings and add a shoulder detail, and then i think im going to add picot up the inside of the thigh slit and use it as ties instead of elastic on the gathered sleeves? there’s fifty yards i might as well get my use out of it on this dress yanno?

i am NOT excited to set this invisible zipper by hand but i do want to wear this dress :( a little funny to me that im making a cotton/poly dress by hand at great trouble, when i don’t normally pick those up commercially (if i MUST, i would rather have a greater than 50% cotton blend). this is such a fun brain puzzle tho. god i missed this

In der Nacht zu Mittwoch von Frankreich her in den Südwesten erneut kräftige Gewitter mit Sturmböen , Hagel zwischen 1 und 2 cm und Starkregen zwischen 15 und 30 l/qm in kurzer Zeit.
