Crocheting Different Types of Curly Hair
When using the wig cap technique to make the curls in hair, changing up the appearance is as simple as changing the crochet pattern.
Follow steps 1-5 in wig cap technique of the previous blog post on making fringe styles. The following pointers are a variation of steps 6-9 to change up the curls.
To experiment with the curls, try the following steps out:
1) Decide on length of initial chain
This will impact upon the eventual length of the hair. In this example in above, I made a chain of 18. Note that once you start to curl it in the subsequent steps, the length will get shorter.
Generally, the curlier it gets, the shorter the length will turn out, so you can adjust the length initially by changing the number of chains that you start with.
2) Decide on stitch height (sc, hdc, dc, etc)
Changing the type of stitches used, whether it be sc, hdc, dc, tc or any long stitches, will change width of each curl.
As you can see in previous 2 images above, the curls are getting progressively wider. This generally translates into bigger curls! You can always go as wide as you want - up to dtc, ttrc or even qtc!
3) Decide on number of stitches in each chain (2sc1, 3sc1, 4sc1 etc)
Increasing the number of stitches in each chain will change how coily the curl is! The image just above showing the curls from sc17 to 2sc17 to 3sc17 visibly makes the curl much more dense. Also, much more coily!
4) Vary the stitch height
(e.g. increasing from sl st 1, sc1, hdc1, dc1, tc1 etc)
I often making increasing stitch height along the length of the chain because it has a svelte effect at the end when you let it curl up.
In the example above (which I don't use often), the stitches are increasing until they become very wide at the top (remember to skip 8st to sl st back to main st).
In the second example just above, I usually increase till a certain point and then it subsequently becomes uniform stitches. See the effect after it curls up?
5) Vary the stitches in each chain
(e.g. alternate sc1 and 2sc1 or other variations)
Referring to the image above, I start off with ch11 and then 4 subsequent curls with slight variations. The middle 2 curls are the base comparisons - 2nd one is sc10, 3rd one is 2sc10. Remember to sl st to next main st in round to hold the curls down.
1st curl involves alternating 2sc1 and sc1 along the chain, this produces a curl somewhere between a wavy one and a curly one.
The 4th curl starts off with more stitches in each ch (2sc5) and then reduces to less stitches in each ch (sc5) later on . This creates a flattened effect at the top of the hairlock and the curls only appearing at the bottom.
The variations really depending on what you decide to experiment... then see how the curls turn out!
In my latest ebook release in conjunction with Knotions magazine, theres an entire chapter on making wavy, curly and coily hairstyles, which includes all these above and much much more!
That’s on top of other technique-packed sections on making fringes, hair updo, short hairstyles and facial hair!
The ebook has been released on the knotions site! Do go and check it out! Also stay tuned for the rest of the month for more snippets on what’s inside the book, especially for all ami lovers!

SEARCHING FOR PINK FLAMINGOS IN FLORIDA
Since buying our first condo in 1995 on Anna Maria Island, I have formed a mental image of seeing a wild flamingo. The flamingo is one of Florida’s famous trademarks and even today I still hold that image and think that by some miracle I will see a flamingo flying overhead or prancing nearby on one of our beach walks. Realistically, I know Flamingos are actually quite rare in the Sunshine State of Florida, although they did once inhabit the southernmost point of Florida about a century ago. Now they can only be seen at zoos and conservation areas. Although, recently reported on Feb. 21, 2108 in a paper published in the journal, the Candor, a team of South Florida researchers made the case that the conventional scientific wisdom of almost a century is wrong. They say, Florida in fact has flamingos – real birds, not the plastic kind. Until we know more,  I will suggest one place in our area to go see a real flamingo and that is Sarasota’s Jungle Gardens (about a 20 minute drive from Anna Maria Island Condo Rentals – 601 Gulf Dr. N. Anna Maria Island, Florida 34217
After giving up my arduous search of a pink flamingo, I did get to see some true Florida pink birds, the Roseate Spoonbills at nearby Robinson Preserve. The roseate spoonbill is a large wading bird and just as pink as a flamingo. Not as tall or as svelte as the flamingo, their body is similarly light pink with an almost coral hue and the tips of their wings are a bright reddish pink. While the flamingo has a distinct down turned black bill the spoonbill’s bill is shaped like a long spoon. Both the flamingo and the spoonbill are social animals and live in large groups. On our hike through the preserve we found some spoonbills in a shallow muddy area and watched them “fish” underwater with their spoon shaped bill to catch insects and crustaceans.
We have found Robinson Preserve a great place to see the Roseate Spoonbills in Florida, specifically in the Anna Maria Island area. The best place to see spoonbills is on the 2.1 mile trail which is appropriately named “Spoonbill Trail” and where we found spoonbills looking for their dinner. While walking through the preserve, you’ll enjoy some of the best birding on Florida’s Gulf Coast, no matter the time of day. With trails for hikers, cyclists, and paddlers to explore, this family-friendly preserve is an excellent coastal destination. A variety of birds and wildlife can be seen throughout the preserve with its 637 acres of preserved coastal wetlands.
I do not consider myself to be a true bird watcher, I do not know the names of many of the birds I see, but I do get excited when I sight some of the beautiful, unique birds that inhabit this area. I was especially excited to see these flamingo look-a-likes on our recent trip and couldn’t wait to tell our family and friends. Whether you are a true birder or someone like me that enjoys nature, Robinson Preserve with around 100 species of birds is a great place for Florida bird-watching. And, maybe one day my image will become a reality and I will see a Pink Flamingo!
Robinson Preserve is located at — 1704 99th St. NW, Bradenton, FL 34209

Crocheting Different Types of Curly Hair
Tumblr media
When using the wig cap technique to make the curls in hair, changing up the appearance is as simple as changing the crochet pattern.
**Follow steps 1-5 in wig cap technique of the previous blog post on making fringe styles.** The following pointers are a variation of steps 6-9 to change up the curls.
To experiment with the curls, try the following steps out:

1) Decide on length of initial chain

3) Decide on number of stitches in each chain (2sc1, 3sc1, 4sc1 etc)
Increasing the number of stitches in each chain will change how coily the curl is! The image just above showing the curls from sc17 to 2sc17 to 3sc17 visibly makes the curl much more dense. Also, much more coily!
Tumblr media
4) Vary the stitch height
(e.g. increasing from sl st 1, sc1, hdc1, dc1, tc1 etc)
I often making increasing stitch height along the length of the chain because it has a svelte effect at the end when you let it curl up.
In the example above (which I don't use often), the stitches are increasing until they become very wide at the top (remember to skip 8st to sl st back to main st).

**In my latest 60-page ebook named ‘A comprehensive guide to Amigurumi hairstyles’, there’s an entire chapter on making wavy, curly and coily hairstyles.**
That’s on top of other technique-packed sections on making fringes, hair updo, short hairstyles and facial hair!

**Go check it out...** if not, wait for a sample section of this book at this end of this month which showcases the content page too!
