Bridge Collapse in Mississippi Claims Three Lives, Leaves Four Injured

Three Dead and Four Injured in Tragic Bridge Collapse
A devastating bridge collapse in Simpson County, Mississippi, on Wednesday left three workers dead and four others critically injured. The accident occurred while a work crew was preparing the bridge for demolition. The structure, located on State Route 149 over the Strong River, had been closed to traffic since September 18 as part of an ongoing replacement project. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) confirmed the tragic incident in a press release, emphasizing that the bridge had been out of service for nearly a month.
The bridge collapse took place approximately 40 miles south of Jackson, sending shockwaves through the local community and beyond. Governor Tate Reeves expressed his condolences on social media late Wednesday, confirming the deaths and injuries. He noted that county first responders, alongside state authorities, had rushed to the scene to manage the aftermath of the disaster. Reeves referred to the collapse as a “tragedy” and commended the efforts of emergency personnel.
Federal and Local Officials Respond
The accident has drawn attention from state and federal officials alike. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg addressed the incident on social media, stating that the Federal Highway Administration is actively working with Mississippi state officials to understand the circumstances that led to the premature collapse. The focus of the investigation is expected to be on the safety protocols in place during the demolition and the exact cause of the structure’s failure.
Simpson County Sheriff Paul Mullins spoke to local media, confirming the loss of three lives and the severe injuries sustained by four others. According to Mullins, the work crew, consisting of seven men, was using heavy machinery to dismantle the bridge when the structure suddenly gave way, plunging the workers approximately 40 feet into the river below. Terry Tutor, the Simpson County coroner, confirmed these details in a separate interview with The New York Times.
As of Wednesday night, no further updates had been provided by local authorities. Efforts to reach both Mullins and Tutor for additional information were unsuccessful. The construction company responsible for the demolition, T.L. Wallace Construction, has not yet issued a statement. Calls to the company on Wednesday went unanswered, leaving questions about the firm’s role and responsibilities in the incident.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Concerns
In the wake of the bridge collapse, MDOT has committed to a thorough investigation of the incident. Department spokesperson Anna Ehrgott stated that an inspector was present at the site when the bridge fell, but fortunately, they were not harmed. Ehrgott assured the public that MDOT would share further details as they become available, and she stressed the department’s commitment to ensuring the safety of both workers and the public during such projects.
While the cause of the collapse remains unknown, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of ongoing infrastructure projects in Mississippi and across the country. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to review demolition practices and safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The community in Simpson County mourns the loss of life and hopes for the recovery of the injured workers, as officials seek answers in the aftermath of the catastrophic collapse.

I’ve been keeping track of 2019 book releases with pan rep. Is anyone surprised? It’s not an easy task, as books with pan rep aren’t often mainstream or talked about a lot even in book circles.
I mean, an author can have extremely popular queer books, even having them turned into movies, but people will still barely talk about their book that has pan rep.
So I was constantly digging and searching over the past few months, and I came up with an okay sized list. Understandably, most of these releases are from the first six months of the year. I’m hoping as we get further into the year, later releases will start popping up. And as always, I will update this list as need be.

My Five Key Songs Of November 2022
Cassette tapes and sermons.
In all honesty, I can’t believe that this is the penultimate monthly round up of the year. And yes, I do say every month that I can’t believe that month has passed so maybe this is a larger issue about me looking at the passage of time but we won’t delve into the matrix on that today. Instead, we’ll take a look at my five key songs for November as the year 2022 draws to a close.
First up, ‘Pick Up The Change’ by Wilco.
I really don’t know how I feel about Wilco. Still. No idea. I spent the first half of this month listening to their music almost exclusively, in particular their debut album ‘A.M’ and I liked it a lot. But for some reason I’m still slightly hesitant and I’m not sure why that is. What I do know though is that I could have lifted a number of songs from ‘A.M’ to feature here however, really I think it should be ‘Pick up the Change’. This track in particular seems to be encapsulate the sound sound of the early days of Wilco and shows glimmers of whats to come. It is laidback and feels like it should be playing in the background of some nineties romantic coming of age comedy. Probably filmed somewhere in Canada, in the autumn, lots of baggy jumpers and people listening to Walkmans. I realise now that I have sort of describe myself there so maybe thats why this era of Wilco does do it for me but as for the rest of it, I’m still not sure. Can you have an existential crisis over a band from Chicago?
Second on the list, ‘Lost in Paradise’ by Ali, Aklo.
When I come to do my round up pieces for the year I have no doubt that ‘Lost in Paradise’ will feature somewhere. ‘Lost in Paradise’ is the ending credits song for the first half of the first series of ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ and it is wonderful. The song itself is brimming with life but when its teamed with the visuals of that ending sequence, its perfect. If you’re familiar with anime shows then you’ll know that the opening and ending sequences are not to be missed and this particular one from ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ is a prime example of that in my eyes if not the defining example. There is one moment in particular featuring my favourite character dancing which never fails to make me smile from ear to ear and when I hear that particular part of the track it makes me smile all over again. The only thing I need to do now is get the dance that they do in that sequence down in time with the song then I will be the true fan of both the series and the track and oh boy what a track it is.
Third up for November is ‘Artificial Colouring’ by XWaves and Runners Club 95.
I have been listening to the tape of XWaves’ ‘Peak Internet’ over and over again throughout November. ‘Peak Internet’ is an expertly realised album and one that does exactly what it sets out to do which is to capture that golden era of the internet when nothing worked quite as it should and this new technology was novel and had this sort of charming quality to it. Like the early series of ‘The Simpsons’, it had this intangible quality which over time has sort of gone by the wayside a little bit. Ofcourse, it is still there but maybe not in the capacity that we would like. ‘Artificial Colouring’ seems to manage to roll all of those feelings into one song, as do the other entries on the album, and with an appearance from the ever brilliant Runners Club 95, this is maybe my favourite song on the record. A lot of my favourite songs I often describe as calming and that tracks as I am often looking for gentle, soothing music. ‘Artificial Colouring’ is those things but its also something more. It is in itself a vessel to another time, its nostalgic sure but if anything its a bullet striking right to the heart of days gone by whilst all the while being completely new itself. It is a masterfully worked calling card for one of the best artists out there.
The penultimate song for this month, ‘Like a Ship’ by Pastor T.L. Barrett.
Now I wrote about this particular song a couple of weeks ago and how mesmerising it is. When I featured this track as the album of the week I spoke about how if any song was going to make me religious it would be this one and now that I have been listening to ‘Like a Ship’ more and more since then I can say one thing for sure, it is transformative. No, it isn’t making me run out to join any religion but when I listen to it I can’t help but think about spirituality and how it impacts people. I don’t need to write that religion is a complicated subject, we know that, it is entwined with the history of the human race and at times for the better and others for the worse because when it gets bad it gets oh so bad. We know that, as humans we are fully aware. Its sort of why I put my faith in the world and the humans that occupy it as foolish as that might sound at times, if not most of the time. ‘Like a Ship’ though, seems to validate that to an extent. It validates it in the respect that through the voices of the congregation it shows that having some sort of faith can elevate you and bring something of worth no matter how big or how small. If it works, it works and ‘Like a Ship’ works. It absolutely works.
And finally, the song of the month is ‘Love Rhythm’ by Karate King.
Right. Was it ever going to be anything else. The song of the month for November had to be a track from ‘Alluring Grace’ and ofcourse its going to be ‘Love Rhythm.’ I still can’t believe that for my first of its two (so far) album of the week pieces I didn’t go with ‘Love Rhythm’. I can’t believe it because when I listen to this track in particular, as the opening of this album that I adore, I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. When we watch the same film or show over and over again its because we know that it is going to bring us something that we need. We can anticipate the feeling of happiness or whatever it may be that is about to be bestowed upon us. Yes, it is good to discover new things but the comfort of knowing something and melting into it is paramount. When I hear ‘Love Rhythm’, I melt. I feel safe and calm as I check into this album and know that for its duration its going to be an exquisite ride. I may not know how I feel about Wilco but I know how I feel about Karate King. Its love (rhythm).
So there we have it, my five key songs for November 2022 with ‘Love Rhythm’ making its way onto the end of the year playlist which will come as no surprise for regular readers. As we begin to move into the latter stages of the year it is ofcourse the time when we look back and take stock of the year that has gone by. 2022 has been a year that I’m going to need some more time to with to try and find the right words for. The good thing is though, that I’ll have some wonderful music to accompany me as I try to find the right words.
-Jake, a man who leapt out of his seat at that second Argentina goal yesterday evening, 27/11/2022.

Stanley Plumly, T.L. Huchu: 'The Landscape of the Spirit World, in the Shape of Autumn'

[Image: “Footbridge: The Shape of Autumn,” by John E. Simpson.] A few days ago, whiskey river shared a fragment of a poem (the italicized lines below) ostensibly about autumn — but, like many, many descriptions of the seasons, actually speaking of deeper mysteries, and deeper rhythms: Spirit BirdsThe spirit world the negative of this one, soft outlines of soft whites against soft darks, someone…

That Particle of the Dove
David Hume, T.L. Huchu, and some thoughts on cynicism: 'That Particle of the Dove'
(Aside, before getting into the gist of today’s post: You’re welcome, whiskey river.)

[Image: “City Utilities Cabinet, San Luis Obispo, California (June, 2022),” by John E. Simpson.] How the minds and everyday interactions of latter-day college students work is unknown to me. But in the late 1960s and early ’70s, a sort of breezy cynicism was everywhere in the air I breathed, an infusion…
