Suzanne Collins gripping my face with her hands: listen listen the first step to evil is dehumanisation, always, the second you start to see people as less than people no matter what they've done to you that's when you start heading down a path of selfish destruction and violence

#I personally interpreted it as Snow wanting to keep everyone at arms length#including the reader (via spacecakes20)
also I love that suzanne wrote katniss and haymitch in first person pov but with coryo she was like “third person for you… you get some distance, creep.”

so you’re telling me that lucy gray’s reaping was rigged, haymitch’s reaping was illegal, and katniss volunteered to save her sister? that they’re only tributes because the capitol forced the covey to remain in district twelve, punished haymitch for trying to protect his girl, and tried to send a little girl to her death? only for it to backfire when the capitol suddenly found themselves with three kids who refused to play by their rules? the three mockingjays of district twelve? you’re telling me that the systems of violence cannot sustain themselves and will always breed rebellion? huh.

can’t believe suzanne collins called north america “a land full of Capitols” in tbosas and set the reaping on the fourth of july and people still don’t get that the hunger games is a critique of american capitalism. how much more direct is she gonna be in sunrise on the reaping.

Snow's influence in the gradual erasure of the Covey from District 12's culture. In TBOSAS, they're well-known as performers. In Sunrise on the Reaping, they no longer sing in public. Lenore has to cut a deal just to be able to play the piano. In Hunger Games, Katniss, a singer herself, doesn't mention the Covey once.

So I asked my friend what she thought happened to Lucy Gray. She's a teacher and is generally very good at picking up on inferences and subtext.
Her theory was that Lucy Gray probably hid out in the forest for a bit, but eventually returned to District 12 and lived there. And at some point after Snow rose to power, he learned she was there, and he killed her.
This is based mostly on the way Tam Amber says "oh no, not again" when he sees Lenore Dove dying of poison. Seems likely that another Covey was killed with the same poison, and who else would Snow poison if not Lucy? She is the only remaining witness to his role in the 10th games after he kills Dean Highbottom. He also inadvertently confessed to Sejanus' murder to her. She knows too much. And, he's a spiteful bastard who can't stand that his "one love" had desires and dreams of her own, that she was more than a possession to improve his own status.
I like the idea of her mysteriously disappearing and living on as a legend. But I think her ending was probably more tragic than that.
I’m haunted with the thoughts of how long it took the covey to realise that Lucy Gray Baird might have died.
They found her missing one day , and her lover Snow is gone too. They miss her , but they are glad she could run. Travel, like they were meant to be.
How long did it take them to realise that Snow wasn’t with her. How did they feel when they found out that Snow was in the capital. Do you think they had a moment of doubt , wondering if she went to the capital with him?
Do they even know she was betrayed by him? Do they slowly realise that Snow might have killed her? As they see him progress into the man he is.
She truly lives up to her name.
“Yet some maintain that to this day
She is a living Child,
That you may see sweet Lucy Gray
Upon the lonesome Wild.
O'er rough and smooth she trips along,
And never looks behind;
And sings a solitary song
That whistles in the wind.”

sunrise on the reaping raises an incredibly important ethical question: how many generations does it take to erase history, to the point of blind, unquestioning acceptance?
i fear the answer is far fewer than any of us are comfortable with.

Haven’t been on tumblr in a while and just searched to see if there’s been any actual discussion and reflection in this fandom about how the hunger games and sunrise on the reaping are so clearly reflective of western imperialism and colonialism and the oppression and exploitation of the global south and most especially the genocide of Palestinians. Yet I am once again disgusted to find that this fandom would rather engage in shipping and analyzing literary texts for color symbolism than actually look at the explicitly obvious (and overtly stated meaning) of this book and its context in our lives and societies. This fandom has once more shown that it is unwilling and incapable of truly comprehending and internalizing this series. It’s shown racism, indifference, ignorance, and shallowness.
Idk man but if you’re a fan of the hunger games, you should be able to say free Palestine with your whole fucking chest, and just acknowledge the obvious real world connections in your posts and fandom discussions. That’s just the bare fucking minimum, and 99% of y’all can’t even do that
#I hate this fandom#it really makes me sick#i just don’t understand#I love the series but the fandom feels so gross to me when all it wants to do is talk about the stupid trivial stuff#and never any of the real world ugly messy HARD painful stuff#thg#hunger games#ballad of songbirds and snakes#tbosas#sotr#sunrise on the reaping#katniss everdeen#haymitch abernathy#suzanne collins#the hunger games#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#peeta mellark#everlark#free Palestine#Palestine

if nothing else, the Snows were a high status family fallen on hard times financially (impoverished nobility are not a new concept), and Grandma'am fueled neuroses about their status
I feel like it should be discussed more how the grandma'am played a part in how entitled Coriolanus became. Like people always talk about Dr Gaul 's influence but the grandma'am is the one that installed in Coriolanus his sense of specialty and importance to the point that he was convinced that he automatically deserved all that is good in the world also she should be held accountable for the fact that Tigris took on all the responsibility by herself entirely while Coriolanus didn't have to do anything other than his school work like this instuled in him the feeling that other people exist only to serve him and fulfil his needs and it definitely must have led to Tigris having self hatred issues

the whole "everyone hungers for something" tagline is so incredibly stupid
the fact is, they took a pretty good tagline, which would actually be hilarious in the right context, and just completely warped the message. the whole fucking point of the book was to show how dr. gaul manipulated him, using his desperation and literal hunger to her advantage. even though he hated her the whole time, she still made him need her attention and praise. she made him feel smart and talented when he was struggling and needed to feel confident in his ability to fix all his family's problems. she made him feel chosen by singling him out in the way that she did. she made him painfully aware that she could take that away at any moment, and with her attention, any chance at a future for him and his family.
she took a teenager in a horrible situation and made him rely completely on her so that she could mold his brain into whatever she wanted. she could convince him of anything; even things that he never agreed with in the beginning. and all because he was afraid. she could make him think anything; do anything. and once she'd indoctrinated him enough, she was comfortable that he would carry on the legacy she'd left on panem. this was the true downfall of his morals; not the events of tbosas, which was more a breakdown of his sanity. the movie just accelerated that process by putting in both. I would have loved to read a book with the events immediately after tbosas that shows this second part happening separately.
indoctrination is a powerful thing. we've seen it happen in cults of all shapes and sizes. I'd like to point out how suzanne collins gives a nod to the most noteworthy of cults at present, which is not exclusively religious or related to self-help. the MAGA cult is entirely based in fear that america is losing its "greatness" as a result of "wokeness". however, that is a completely irrational fear. coriolanus's fears of living in poverty are very real. yet the manipulation is still the same: a figure of authority telling a vulnerable party to adopt a certain ideology to save themselves from whatever they're afraid of, either explicitly or implicitly since dr. gaul never addresses his financial status. once the authority figure gains their trust, they can make the vulnerable party do virtually anything. it's incredibly dangerous, but highly effective.
so yes, coriolanus did hunger for something. you could call it power, but it absolutely loses the original message when you put it in the wrong context. because it was never about power and control over others. I will not deny that the feeling comforted him, but that was never something he strived for. not without dr. gaul convincing him it was the only way he could ever get what he truly wanted: personal safety, financial security, and most importantly, FOOD.
he did indeed hunger for something. i'll settle for personal power, but not the kind they imply in the movie poster. that something was sustenance. it was literal hunger all along. hence, why the tagline would be kinda funny if it was used correctly. but I don't think funny was what they were going for.

the fact that if coryo had made different choices, he could have just lived in 12 with the songbird he spends his life never getting over anyways, the games could have just faded out, haymitch and lenore dove could have had kids and lived happily ever after and katniss would have been everyone’s cousin or niece… and of course still ended up with peeta somehow because “this would have happened anyway”.
#i mean also after burdocks death (because that prob would have still happened) katniss would have had multiple adults to turn to#and not had to be parentified and she wouldn’t hate asterid as much either#thg#hunger games#sotr#sotr spoilers#sunrise on the reaping#sunrise on the reaping spoilers#katniss everdeen#peeta mellark#haymitch abernathy#everlark#haydove#aberdove#coryo snow#lucy gray baird#coriolanus snow#tbosas#the ballad of songbirds and snakes#lenore dove#snowbaird#✨⚡️#2000
