kneeling over the mutilated body, tess looked over at the man standing silently in the doorway. it was too dark to make out any blood on his skin or clothes, but he was the only one in the house. “did you kill him?”

night spider crashes through the window, hitting the floor with a loud thump! her body's still reeling from scorpion's attack, victim to a strike of his tail; judging from the jolts going up her spine, it must be laced with something. his suit is clearly man-made, meaning there's an obvious weakness somewhere. tess curses herself for not being able to get close enough to inspect it.

" seriously? " she hisses under her breath when she tries and fails to push herself off the floor. whatever scorpion did to her, she'd likely be immobile for a few minutes ( if she was lucky ).

unable to move, she can only look over her surroundings. at first, she thought she'd been tossed into someone's apartment, but it seems to be more of a store than anything else. the trinkets and general aesthetic seem to hint at some type of occult shop. peter would've liked that.

" hi there – miss? " night spider calls out when she sees a young woman from the corner of her eye. " sorry for breaking your window. and probably a couple of other things. can you help me off the floor? i'm in the middle of chasing a criminal here. "

The afternoon sun was weak, barely warming the frozen earth beneath their boots, but at least it was quiet. No clicks, no groans, no distant FEDRA patrols. Just the steady crunch of snow underfoot and the occasional rustle of bare branches in the wind. They were far enough from the QZ that the air felt cleaner, and the relentless tension of their initial escape had eased into the weary, familiar rhythm of cross-country travel.

Tess walked a few paces ahead, her rifle slung low, her eyes constantly sweeping the tree line. Joel was somewhere behind them, probably lagging a bit, lost in his own head as usual. Her attention, however, kept drifting back to the kid. Ellie. She was kicking at a half-buried chunk of ice, humming some off-key tune that sounded vaguely familiar from a pre-outbreak radio station. The kid was a walking contradiction – small and scrawny, yet overflowing with a kind of restless energy and an unnerving bluntness that Tess found herself grudgingly appreciating. She’d certainly made their journey less… monotonous.

"You seem to have endless amounts of questions for Joel, what about me...you got anything you want to ask me kiddo?"

Tess had become a great friend of Kalani's over the time she'd been in town, so inviting her to get lunch wasn't out of the ordinary. It was nice having people to spend time with since not only his wife passed, but his brother too.

"Tess, hi! Sorry, I'm running a little behind. Come on in." Kalani stepped aside to let her inside his home. "I'll just be five more minutes." He continued getting ready, completely forgetting he had his next Melanie Hart novel he was working on splayed out on his desk for anyone in the house to see.

"At least some more shooting and self-defense, but not taught by men. They don't have the first idea of how a woman should use her body to inflict maximum pain. “ ah, ” he reprimands, a light smack of her hand away as she reaches for the bottle before he can. “ let me. you've done it enough for me, ” joel says, meeting her gaze as he twists off the cap of the bottle, pouring it onto the clean cloth. he only looks away as he flips her arm over, taking a look at the wound before beginning to clean it. touch uncharacteristically soft. “ how do the other guys look ? ” he asks, glancing up to meet her eyes for a moment before turning back to her arm.
