HAII!! TY FOR ASKING <3 Probably yeah!! His mass amount of wings does make him a very STRONG flyer. Meaning he can take off very quickly, and kind of shoot himself into any direction- sometimes when he doesn't need to 😭

Some more rambles: Each of his wings sets all work together to fly. His biggest wings put in the most work, used for actually flapping along with the second pair. His third pair are MOSTLY used for stabilizing him if he flies for a large distance (i.e., to the store). But of course those can flap too. Since he has SO MUCH surface area of wing, he catches a lot of wind and definitely could fly pretty fast if he needed too. :D

People only talks about akechi & Joker's duality, but I feel like Ryuji and Joker also have some sort of similarities

I was thinking about this the other day, actually, because in the art book, the notes about Ryuji's design specifically mention how he was designed to counter Joker (not as a stark opposite so much as just... a balance) I have a lot of thoughts on this topic but it's always just been nebulous.... vibes. That I just get, without ever having to explain why. So it was a challenge to put it all into words. Hope it all makes sense ^-^

ANYWAY under the cut bc this is long as hell

Joker and Akechi have a very interesting duality, I will admit. I can see why it dominates conversations on the topic of 'characters Joker has duality with.' I promise I have a point in derailing this post about Ryuji into talking about Akechi; bear with me here. Their similarities serve to highlight their contrasting elements; it's like a bad-end look of what Joker could have been if he'd made different/more selfish choices. That's the whole point of a foil.

Okay now that we've established what a foil is, back to Ryuji.

I think Joker/Ryuji are the opposite of a foil, they're a mirror; where they highlight each other's good traits and their similarities. Not that they have no differences, just that those differences work to make their similarities more obvious.

I rewrote this a couple times and kept feeling it was hard to follow, so I guess I'll start to by outlining a couple key character traits for them each.

Joker is selfless, motivated by his sense of justice, willing to get himself hurt to do the right thing, tactful, on the quiet side, level-headed, intelligent and generally good with people. He's a planner, a 'think before you act' type.

Ryuji is selfless, kind, motivated by his sense of justice, willing to get himself hurt to do the right thing, loud, 'act first, think later,' brash, lacks people skills, often says things without thinking, not super smart. He's a guy led mostly by feelings, and is often the first to want to take action.

There are obvious similarities, and obvious differences. I think at a very basic level, Ryuji's traits help make Joker's more obvious - Ryuji's very emotion-based, more impulsive, 'act first, think later' attitude leaves room for Joker's more level-headed, tactful nature to show, especially early on. In this way they also balance each other out really well just in general - particularly early as that's when Ryuji gets the best characterization, Ryuji's the one spurring on the plot action. He's the one moving them along toward taking on Kamoshida. In contrast, Joker's the one reigning him in when he goes too far - he stops Ryuji from hitting Kamoshida, he makes him stop when they're just walking in circles looking for the castle on the second day, things like that. Ryuji's a character of action and Joker balances him out with more thought and logic. Ryuji's the heart of the team and Joker's the brain (not that I think Joker's cold or unfeeling; just he's much more careful and tactical whereas Ryuji is an emotions-based guy)

Their differences also serve to make their similarities stand out. If they were super samey, with tons of things in common, then no one in particular would be unique. But by having their demeanor, temperaments, and general personalities so contrasting, it means the stuff they DO share - the important stuff; the kindness, the selflessness; the want to help others - really stands out. But that's not the only way their differences serve to uplift their similarities. Back with the Kamoshida arc example, Ryuji's more action-oriented character means he's the one who spurs most of the action in the Kamoshida arc, so you see a lot about his character. But despite Joker not being such an active role, you still learn a lot about Joker's character. He's not as emotional or headstrong as Ryuji is, but he's still shown to care - Ryuji's more outspoken nature both contrasts and compliments Joker's more quiet determination. It provides a vehicle for Joker's characterization basically, by giving Joker a more outspoken companion who can drive the action and leave room for Joker to show his own morals by agreeing and going along with Ryuji. If both characters were more quiet, tactful characters like Joker or more rash, headstrong ones like Ryuji, it wouldn't work the same way (or at all.)

I think there's something to be said for their similarities, too, and how those play into their dynamic. Like I said, I think they're a mirror of one another, reflecting and highlighting the good traits in each other. Their kindness, their unwavering commitment to doing what they think is right, their willingness to put themselves in harm's way to help people they don't even know. It's really easy to see those traits in Joker because Ryuji mirrors him in that way. Every time Ryuji displays that selfless, good guy core, it's a reminder that this is the guy Joker hitched his wagon to. This is the guy Joker chose to help out, because he believes in the same things. Every time Joker makes a selfless decision to help someone, you know Ryuji agrees with him. You know they're on the same page, and so you can learn more about one by looking at the things the other one stands for; each time one of them displays those core traits, you know the other feels the same way. I think this is especially pertinent for Joker's characterization as the protagonist, since most things in a game revolve around the protag primarily and Joker, as a character, does not get a lot of speaking roles for himself - Ryuji's expression of these traits is often a reflection of Joker's feelings/thoughts when Joker himself is often not afforded such explicit characterization. (Not that Joker has no characterization, just that as the protag with limited dialogue that characterization is often less/less obvious than the other main characters)

Without Ryuji there would be no Phantom Thieves. He was the one who activated the nav the first time, he's the reason Joker awakened a Persona, he's the reason they went back into the metaverse a second time, he's the reason they started trying to do something about Kamoshida's abuse of the volleyball team, he's the main voice behind going after him in light of Shiho's suicide. I bring all this up as another element where they contrast each other in an interesting way. At the beginning of the game, from the second we meet him, Ryuji hates Kamoshida. He wants to help the volleyball team so much that he wants to go back into the palace where he almost died. From the jump, Ryuji is mad and he's bitter and he still wants to do the right thing. And at that point in the story, I do not think the same applies to Joker. When Joker awakens to Arsene, there's a moment of doubt - a moment where Arsene asks him, was saving that lady a mistake? Joker's at a point where he's been beaten down for following his sense of justice, and I think there's a degree to which he'd given up on it. That's why Ryuji's the main instigator behind the plot early on (besides Ryuji's more action-forward character.) Because Joker's still a little wary of it. I think this difference in their character is really interesting, because I think if not for Ryuji, Joker might not have ever been spurred into action; he might have ended up believing that pursuing his own sense of justice was a mistake after all. But Ryuji, someone similar in sharing his morals and similar in having been kicked to the ground and outcast for it, hasn't given up. I think seeing that reaffirms Joker's sense of justice; reaffirms that he didn't make a mistake after all. So they're similar in circumstance, but one has knuckled under and one has not. And seeing someone else like him who hasn't given in changes things for Joker.

On a less character analysis, more meta note, I think they have fun duality in both design and gameplay, as well.

The art book mentions explicitly that Joker was more 'classic, gentlemanly phantom thief' but that there needed to be "some offbeat fashion, a bad boy vibe, and a sense of playfulness" to sell the idea of students up to no good. So Ryuji was designed to be that - the book states he is 'completely rid of all the refined qualities the protagonist has.' It outright says 'structurally, he's the opposite of the protagonist' and that his slumped posture is a contrast to Joker's better posture. So from a basic, design standpoint they were absolutely considered opposites.

I think there's a lot to be said for their gameplay in a similar vein, where Joker is a jack-of-all-trades and as the protag with LOTS of persona/skill options, you're encouraged to be strategic and thoughtful with your personas/turns. But Ryuji is not that at all - his play style is super straight forward. He hits stuff. Not that there are no further intricacies to his gameplay but the basic is he has a really high strength stat, so get to whacking stuff. Even other characters with a pretty well-defined role don't get pigeonholed as much, as Ann (the Ryuji of the magic attackers) gets some stat and heal moves, and characters like Yusuke, Makoto, and Haru get more varied and complex movepools with some gimmicks available to them (Yusuke's baton pass related skills, Haru's walls) so from a gameplay standpoint you have the most complex (Joker) and the most simple character (Ryuji) for combat.

I am so intrigued by what this is about!

It's nothing too exciting, haha. I save different versions of my manuscript under similar names- this one was made in june of last year, since the 6-24, and it was sent to two different people for impressions and thoughts, so this is version A, which ended up being the one I kept when I compiled the notes into a single version. BB is Black Butterfly, which is its working title.

It's an urban fantasy book about what happens when you fail so hard at being the chosen one that you get a felony and a demon in your head. It's about a few things. Mommy issues. Daddy issues. The Pacific Northwest Garden Pixie. Witches. The bureaucracy of secret societies. How damaging it can be to constantly be in self-protection mode due to suicidal ideation and how it affects your ability to form friendships. It's about learning your great-grandmother was probably gay and her wife is a giant spider that still lives in the park and is singlehandedly preventing the apocalypse.

It's about getting back up again even though you don't want to.

Here's a bit of it if anyone is bored.

She leaned against the old, silk-smooth wood, breathing out slowly, hands tightening their death grip on the box. Okay. She shouldn’t take this lightly just because all the magic crap was ordinary to her. This wasn’t about Liv and her stupid ego. Amy was in genuine trouble, and she had a responsibility to figure out how to help.

She might not be a witch but she was still a damn human being.

A pair of eyes staring at her owlishly from Deacon’s paperwork wasteland of a desk drew Liv’s attention from the damn box. A flat-faced feline stared at her from a nest of catalogs, its massive bulk trimmed down to a ponderous loaf. The eyes fixed on her were enormous and harvest orange, blinking placidly.

Surprised by the unexpected benevolence, she slow-blinked back to the cat.

The gesture was a reassurance that she wasn’t unwelcome; it seemed Deacon had been right about the gift of cigarettes being welcome.

Liv was glad she’d followed his advice. “Rusty?” she guessed.

The domovoi masquerading as a cat responded in a very faint ‘mrreh’, plumy tail-tip twitching. Liv smiled wryly, glancing down at the box again. She pushed off the door, swaying forward a step as she carefully opened the latch, fingers restless and eager. Oh, wait.

She glanced back up again. “Hey. There’s a fae contract in here–” The cat’s abrupt, and unmistakably disdainful look was so shocking that Liv stuttered out an awkward laugh. “U-umh, and I need to read it. It’s safe for me, demon stuff. Deacon told me to be back here, I’m not trying to kick you out, but if y–”

Liv cut off as the cat gracefully unfolded to his feet, giving her a long look before jumping heavily off the desk. He landed with all the gravity of such a big cat, with a double thump and a flick of his tail. Then he turned away from her, lifted that very impressive tail, and walked directly into the wall behind the desk.

Literally into the wall.

In a tendril of darkness, a shadow crept up the wall from where he impacted, growing and stretching until the last of his tail disappeared. The flat silhouette that had been a cat leapt across the wall, tumbling into the abyss of a sharp corner shadow and disappearing. The domovoi was gone.

“Doesn’t like the fae. Good to know,” Liv murmured to herself, flipping the box open.

There was a weathered vellum scroll inside, wrapped around one of those fancy wooden sticks that old scrolls always had. She picked it up, and held it up by it. The end of the scroll had been decorated with a tassled silk rope. As Liv reached out and grabbed it in two fingers, it gleamed in the much better light of the office; there were strands of gold woven in. Probably real. The scroll rolled out sideways, script unfurling incredibly long sentences that ran the entire length of the damned thing. Luckily it wasn’t too big, or she’d have to put it down on that desk and risk never finding it again. You shouldn’t let go of a fairy contract.

Especially not on top of camouflage.

“Berith?” she said.

“I am here. Of course I am here. Say the Words.”

“Colloquial language conveys consent without the need for rigidity.”

“The Words of the Covenant must be spoken to invoke our bargain.”

Ugh, seriously?

While she appreciated Berith's by the book bullshit for making him predictable, there was always the vague sense that she was taking advantage of him when she used the full formal wording. Yes, yes, it was the contract they'd both signed, but she was human. She could still choose to break the rules. Demons, on the other hand, were bound by the rules in a way that removed the word no from the equation.

So asking the 'proper' way was tantamount to forcing him, and it always made her feel a little gross.

Not exactly the demonic corruption people generally feared.

1: well first of all I love her. But she is a difficult character to write because she is just wildly different from me. Her issues(including being dehumanized, control problems, physical/mental disabilities, social problems) just mesh weirdly for her. combine that with her coded in "gotta be capricious and unpredictable"-ness that she doesnt have a choice over(magic is weird in her world and has a lot of control over its users personality and actions) makes her super hard to write. but i love her sooooo much and i would die for her

2: she doesn't have a romance with a main character, but she does have a romance with Brigit, a side character(wind fairy), who is technically spying on her and trying to get her to join a side in the war going on. The romance doesnt. end well. brigit ends up dying, and i dont think ill ever write something else for her. though she does fall in love really easily and has had a crush on all the other main characters(Aurtaral, Fesi, Senatha) at some point

3: Aurtaral. Theyre complete opposites, theyre childhood friends, theyre kinda the "only one who can defeat you" trope, theyre estranged, theyre really lonely and just desperately want their friend back but they dont understand the choices the other makes and dont think the other has their best interest at heart. it just reallly makes me wanna hug them both

4: idk how i could have an unpopular opinion on her because noone knows about her

ooohh ok ok. tbh this is hard, bc i kinda hate them all lmao (in an affectionate way). and we are going under a read more bc i talked more than expected lmao

1: blair - tbh this fluctuates but I cant ignore that I just enjoy her so much. i love her sarcasm and insecurity and bitchiness and despite all the shit the show throws at her she manages to make most story lines (even the ones i despise) engaging and interesting.

2: jenny - the literal icon <23 i loved her sooo much when i first watched this show as a teenager and the love has done the opposite of go away tbh. she has this mix of deep not knowing who she is and clawing her way to where she thinks she wants to be that you really don't get to see too often in a character. also the show constantly gave her nothing and she made something out of it which rules.

3: dan. he can get on my nerves ofc ofc but I also like that he's just as frustrating as everyone else lmao. i like that he cares, i like that he's selfish but in a way that feels more realistic to a teenager who feels like a fish out of water (that overtime becomes acclimated with the water ofc). I mean he's a v easy character to like and I can appreciate that for it is.

4: serena. tbh this is where it gets a bit trickier bc i do love serena, I think the first season does her well, I think she is an interesting character if often poorly executed. I think narratively they didn't know what to do with her for a lot of the show despite her being a very main character. but i like that she loves with all of her heart, i think her being used by so many people and coming out like she has is really interesting. and like all of everyone on this show, I just think she needs a break - despite her getting a few, she needs more, better ones lmao.

5: eric. lowkey a cop-out answer for me bc I more like what he could have been - but lowkey that's kinda how I feel about all of them lmfao. I like that we get a kid who has been in therapy (inpatient no less) and is separated not bc of his parents but bc of who he is. i wish we had gotten more of his mental health and him exploring and queer culture and what it means to be gay in the environment he is stuck in. but i do like his sarcasm and his inability to take bullshit (altho ofc he is just like everyone else. a bit of a hypocrite) and I love both his relationships with serena and jenny.

now onto ships lol

1: blair x dan. I mean they're a classic; pretty much the only good canon ship on the show tbh. i don't have much to say about them that hasn't already been said a million times. they work together in a way that is crazy to have been thrown away so casually. their banter and care is unparalleled. the pining was so good, the way the intellect works with each other. the way they challenge each other in a healthy and good and interesting way. also such a hot couple

2: dan x nate. tbh this is kinda where it get tricky bc I fuck with gossip girl but lowkey i kinda dont fuck with many ships for it lmfao but i enjoy these boyfriends a lot. like the unexpected but really god and solid friendship (and then to lovers) is just nice and good. and i dont really ship either with serena, i just think both relationships while having their pros, often end up being really one sided and unhealthy but I think these two would actually work bc of the foundation they built and also mutual respect.

3: blair x dan x nate. hmmm are we starting to see a pattern ?? lmfao. but fr see above and also blair/nate was always a mess and never going to last but there is care and love under all of it. they're both just so fucked up from their parents and everything else but strip that away and you have two ppl who do love each other and then you add in dan who they both care about and who loves them both so much. and yeah these three are just such a vibe yk?

4: blair x jenny. they're toxic, they're unhealthy, they're a mess. they're also fucking interesting. two young women torn apart by expectations and their own ambitions that became each others competition in a homoerotic and silly and fucked up way <3 we had an almost friendship that always had the undercurrent of, u are below me, u cannot challenge me. which ofc was impossible for jenny to follow, she cant sit still, she refuses to be controlled like that for too long. just there's so much potential and vibes to them, yeah...

his twin brother, kissing a girl. his mother, following him outside, asking why he cannot be more like his brother. his mother, telling him that if he cannot find a husband and bear her grandchildren, he will die alone, he will be of no use to her, he will be nothing. nevermind that he is twelve, that he is not a girl, that he has the mind of a genius and the passion to match it.

a room full of people staring at him like he is nothing, an ingrained certainty that love will only ever lead to humiliation, and a lifelong determination that romance will never, ever, be for him.

💖 What’s the easiest part of love for them?

understanding. luca is good at understanding people; why they do what they do, what they really mean by it. he is forgiving and ready to move past just about any wrongdoing provided he understands why they did it and feels they are sufficiently apologetic. this trait is very useful for caspar, who is prone to doing idiotic things that luca tends to see right through and easily forgives.
