A Surprising Invite C7
Max had been at her apartment for the last 2 months, only leaving briefly for testings, meetings, fittings, or appearances he needed to make. Otherwise, he had come back to Raela each time as if it were the most natural thing in the world. As if he was meant to. As if her apartment was always his home. Raela had grown comfortable with his presence, always happy to see him return, and Fable was elated to have another presence in the home.
With Fable being at her grandmother’s for a sleepover and cookie baking, Raela had made herself comfortable on the couch to read while Max was out doing some shopping. With the sound of a key in the knob, Raela looked up from her perch, sat with a cup of coffee, grinning as he came through the door, but as she noticed the grim look on his face she felt concern wash over her immediately.
“Max, are you alright?” She asked softly, setting her mug of coffee and her book face down on the coffee table, standing up to walk over to him.
“I want to ask you something, and it would seem I’ve driven myself mad with anxiety about your response.” Max replies softly, smirking as he chuckles to himself. Raela sighs and smirks with him.
“Well then, best get it out so you’re not anxious anymore.” She soothes as she takes his hand, coaxing him over to the couch so they could sit down. As they sat, Raela positioned herself facing Max, one leg tucked under her as the other hung off the couch. Max leaned back and rested his head on his fist, smirking over at her before his face became solemn again.
“You know the F1 75 event is coming up.” Max supplies, his tone more of a statement, both of them having been aware since before the 2024 season was even over. Raela nods, understanding that this means he’ll have to leave, unsure of when they’ll see each other again.
“I know, but I know we can find a way-“ Max interrupts her softly.
“I want you to be my plus one.” He speaks quickly, closing his eyes and grimacing at himself as he clearly mispronounces the word ‘want’ in his haste to get the statement out. Max can feel his cheeks flaring brightly, but soon peaks from one eye as Raela begins to giggle.
“Well, that’s certainly not what I expected. I’m not so sure my mom can watch Fable the entire time I’m in England.” She speaks softly, a look of remorse in her eyes.
“Then bring her with. You have a passport for her already, yeah?” Max states easily, shrugging. Raela’s face morphs into shock, before swinging to deep in thought.
“You’re okay with her just- coming with?” Raela asks.
“Yes. I want you there. You and Fable are a package deal, therefore I want Fable there. Need to have the two best cheerleaders I can think of cheering my name.” Max grins easily, a strong gleam of mischief and a hint of chaos in his eyes. Raela laughs again, louder this time as she nods her head.
“Well alright, I guess you’ll have your cheerleaders.” Max cheered before diving in to hug Raela who happily hugged him back. But at that moment a thought dawned on Raela, making her pull away to look at him.
“Wait- this will have so many implications- the press, your team, the event staff-“ Before she could finish, Max laid a gentle kiss on her forehead, resting his forehead on hers and speaking in an even softer voice after.
“I know. I’ve thought about those too. Raela, I’ve essentially lived with you for two months, and I’ve felt like I’ve found my slice of heaven on Earth. If you’re okay with it, I want those to be the implications.” He moves his head back to look her in the eyes. “My press team needs a little chaos to start their 2025.” He laughs easily, causing Raela to laugh as well.
“Well it’s a good thing I’m a societal nobody and you only have my snapchat.” Raela laughs, warmth radiating in her chest. “I’ll need to discuss this with Justine and Alivia, they’ll want to-“ Max interrupts her softly again, laughing.
“I sort of already did. They were elated that you’d be getting to travel, and have decided to hire Lorenzo temp as your replacement. He works so closely with you already, he was the most obvious candidate. Marigold didn’t even need to storm into the office, Justine went and found her to offer Lorenzo a check.” Raela laughs brightly, shaking her head.
“You really had this all planned out didn’t you, Max.” She smiles, gratitude deep in her eyes. As the hum under his skin and the song in his ears grew stronger, Max knew for a fact every move he made had been right so far. He was just hopeful that he wouldn’t mess it up so soon.
——
As Raela, Fable, and Max approach the O2 arena, Raela can’t help but shiver, Fable’s bright laughter filling the space of the sleek hypercar. Max notices the shiver, gently slipping his hand into hers and giving it a light squeeze.
“Are you alright, mijn dreiging?” Raela chuckles at the nickname he’d given her. ‘My Menace’ after a particularly chaotic day at the mall a month prior. Fans had kept approaching him asking to take pictures, meanwhile she’d completely and entirely gaslit the fans into believing the man in front of them was not the 4 time world champion Max Verstappen but instead her mute cousin Reginald Horinks who just so happened to be an exact doppelgänger. The two had spent that night cackling over boxes of Panda Express about some of the reactions and expressions.
Raela looked over to Max and then back to Fable in the backseat, chuckling lightly to herself as she remembers how Max had to struggle to get the toddler’s carseat into the hypercar. She watches as Fable tries to get a good look at everything around her, wonderment clear on her features. Looking back at Max, Raela nods happily.
“Yeah. You know what, if Fable can be completely unbothered, I can be too. I just really wish I had my comfort hoodie.” Raela chuckles a bit, looking down at herself.
She wore a beautiful but simple navy blue chiffon dress that had gentle bell sleeves, an empire waist, a skirt that hung just above her ankles, and a deep heartline cut that connected with the waist of the dress to highlight her sternum and the simple snowflake locket necklace that hung there. Inside the locket was a blue felt piece that had a dash of raspberry essential oil on it in case she needed to ground herself.
Max smirks a bit to himself at Raela’s response. Raela had shown him a lot about herself, her life, and her world while he’d been basically living with her. They’d gotten to know each other so well that he knew she’d be flawless tonight, and he knew how to read her signs of anxiety right as they start.
“Mommy look!! Curly curly!!” Fable screeches and giggles, making Max and Raela look to see what the little girl had noticed. Max soon barked a laugh, clapping a hand over his mouth. Raela glanced at him, wondering what she hadn’t seen yet.
“It would appear she’s noticed Lando’s curly mullet.” Max murmurs, causing Raela to snort. They could both tell right then that this was going to be a good night with the bubbly toddler along.
——
Raela picked up Fable gently, curling the girls pastel rainbow knee length skirt under her rear to protect from the nippy London night air as much as she could, smiling in relief as Max gently swept his overcoat over Raela’s shoulder and around Fable who grasped the side around her.
“Tanks Maxie!” The girl cooed, making Max’s heart melt a little more than he thought it could.
“Always, maus.” He murmurs in reply, using the nickname he’d picked for her after usually finding the girls mousy brown hair running under foot when he and her mother were cooking or cleaning. Raela smiled as she caught his eye, none of the three paying very much mind to the millions of camera shutter clicks or the tens of potentially over a hundred flashes nearly blinding them.
Max could see her getting nervous, a few of her early anxiety signs starting to show as she nearly imperceptibly nibbled on the inside of her lower lip. Nodding slightly, he turned to rest a hand on her lower back, smiling and waving at the photographers as they walked past. Raela kept a gentle smile on her face the whole time, gently tickling Fable as she walked.
Fable’s giggles gradually drowned out the camera shutters, her face alight with laughter as Raela every so often scritched at the toddler’s side under the jacket. Max couldn’t help his own laughter as Raela continued to playfully attack the small child in her arms as they walked into the arena. After getting inside, he turned to her.
“Giggling child to distract from anxiety. Resourceful, mijn dreiging.” A strong gleam of mischief began to shine in his eyes as Raela shrugged.
“What can I say? Her giggles could cure cancer in my opinion.” A loud laugh erupts from Max, a full belly laugh that causes the man to nearly double over. Raela and Fable begin to laugh with him before Raela carefully passes him his overcoat.
Setting Fable down and crouching next to her, Raela opens the discreet diaper bag that she’d packed and pulls out what appear to be a form of navy blue plastic velcro cuffs. Raela gently fastens one velcro cuff around her own wrist, securing it in place before looking up at Fable.
“You remember what this is for right? Remember how you and mommy wore these at the zoo so that you could run ahead of mommy and mommy could tug you back if she needed” She asks softly, holding the other cuff out for Fable to take. The toddler grins happily and takes the cuff, slipping her hand through and holding it out for her mother.
“I remember! I got to run ahead and umm, see the monkeys, and then you kept me still before I went into a puddle!” Fable giggles happily as Raela laughs softly, nodding as she fastens and secures the toddler cuff, ensuring Fable wouldn’t be able to remove it herself unless absolutely necessary.
“That’s exactly right sweetheart. Now tonight, you’re not gonna be able to do very much running ahead. But we still need to wear these because instead its a really big room full of a whole lot of people, and mommy doesn’t wanna lose her sunshine. Can you keep close to mommy or Maxie?” Raela explains, making sure Fable understands the situation. The girl gazes into her mothers eyes for a moment, eerily seeming to examine the emotions there before grinning brightly and quickly taking a tight grasp of her mothers hand.
“Okay mama!! I can do that!” She grins brightly, moving to stand closer to her mother as Raela stands. As Raela looks up at Max again, she chuckles softly at his blown away expression.
“She’s a very emotionally tuned 3 year old. Trust me, it baffles me sometimes too.” Raela knowingly explains, bumping her shoulder against his.
——
They’d gotten through Sauber, Williams, and the Visa Cash App Racing Bulls (or simply, still VCARB) and Fable seemed to be having the complete time of her life, kneeling in her chair as the lights, music, smoke, and all other effects filled the stadium. As Max watched all of the little girl’s reactions, he couldn’t stop himself from laughing every so often and pointing out her expressions to her mother.
Every time Max got Raela’s attention onto Fable, her heart warmed. Fable was blown away by it all, completely enraptured. Raela decided if anything was a good introduction to Formula 1 for the girl, the F1 75 event was it. Raela decided right then that she would be forever grateful to Max for bringing them, and would have to be sure to tell him as much after the event was over.
Raela had been watching Fable for a minute, making sure her daughter was at least nibbling on her snacks here and there before Max got her attention. Quickly glancing at him, she saw him pointing off to her left, almost behind her with a grimace on his face. Before she had a chance to turn, she heard the voice of Jack Whitehall next to her.
“Hasn’t this all just been beautiful!?” Jack asks towards the camera and the crowds. The crowd cheered in response, excited for the next reveal to come after they’d finished with the Racing Bulls’ presentation. “But what do we have here?! Max Verstappen seems to have brought a beautiful duo of plus ones! Ma’am, may I just say, that dress looks gorgeous on you.” He compliments easily, going a route Raela hadn’t expected he would. She could feel her cheeks warm slightly as she blushed.
“Well, thank you Jack. It’s an honor to get such a compliment from someone so well known.” She responds easily, ignoring the rapid pounding in her ears as the blood rush threatens to deafen her.
“Well, I’d like to think I’m well known, but none so much as the man next to you! How did you meet?” Jack asks, bringing up a familiar topic that seems to ease Raela.
“Well, funnily enough Sergio Perez managed to get one of the Redbull pit crew to lure me into the garage to get a look at the chassis when in reality apparently Max wanted my number.” Raela winks, remembering that thankfully they’d discussed it would be entirely okay for either of them to share this story. Max had said he wanted to cause chaos for his publicity team, and this would be a fast way to do so in his mind. Jack looked stunned and smirked at the pair of adults, mischief beginning to shine just as deep in his eyes.
“So you mean to tell me, at one of the Grand Prix’s last year, Checo lured you into a bait and trap for your number for Max?” He grins, eating this right up. At that point, Max leans over and grins.
“It was in Las Vegas. Sometimes in my heart, I attribute my 4th championship win to her goading me into showing her the car after we’d used that to lure her in. Checo, myself and a lot of our engineers noticed she was wearing our team colours-“ At this point Raela cuts in with a giggle.
“Which could have easily been mistaken for Ferrari if it hadn’t been for the boots I was wearing.” Max laughs and nods his head, putting up one hand.
“Yes, her boots were the deciding factor. But we also noticed she was sketching and writing furiously in this notebook she had, and when Checo and I went to look, she had these elaborate drawings of the angles and mechanics of every teams chassis and had her own notes on which team could improve where. I’ve been mulling over the idea of getting Horner to commission her as a consultant, some of her ideas could be revolutionary.” Max finishes his explanation, Jack enamored the entire way through. The comedian looked blown away.
“So you’re a random woman who’s got a mind for engineering? While looking this gorgeous? I can only imagine.” Jack splutters and smiles gleefully. “What do you do in your day to day?”
“Well actually I’m a senior paralegal at a small firm back home.” Raela answers with a grin.
“A beautiful engineer who knows law?! Be still my bloody heart! Max, you’ve really found a catch. Now, may I ask: What is your name?” The comedian asks, nearly on the edge of his seat. Before Raela could answer, Max leans over.
“Let’s just call her Drei.” He suggests, a smirk playing at the corner of his lips. Drei, close enough to her nickname Rye, but a shortened version of his nickname Dreiging. They’d agreed on it to keep her identity from the public for her safety and the safety of her daughter who was absentmindedly staring around the room paying no attention to the interaction unfolding in front of her.
“Ooo, I can get behind a mysterious nickname. Well, Drei, Max, adorable child of Drei, I sincerely hope you three have a beautiful rest of the evening.” The crowd cheered as the next livery reveal began, with Jack giving a nod to Max and gently leaving a kiss on Raela’s hand. With the man’s microphone turned off, he looked at the pair again.
“I really must say, you two make a sight.” He complimented, happy to have a chance to interact with someone new among the sphere.
“Thank you, and truly it’s an honor to meet you. I was nervous to show up as Max’s plus one but you were so incredible at helping keep me level.” Raela grins at Jack, gently patting his hand.
“Oh it’s no issue! I noticed you were looking a bit blank and the last thing I want is to spook someone who’s clearly new to all that attention.” Max chuckled and nodded along, grateful that Jack had been so friendly.
“This has to stay our little secret, you can’t tell anyone, but my name is Raela. It really is so cool to meet you.” The woman introduces herself, Jack happily taking her hand in greeting.
“No worries. Your secret is safe with me.” Jack winks before standing and making his way to the next point he needed to be at.
——
After Max stood up to go prepare for his own team’s livery reveal, Raela was surprised to find Lando quickly stealing Max’s seat with a grin aimed directly at her.
“You’re the mystery woman!” He crows happily, his eyes gleaming brightly. Raela pauses, taken aback for a moment at Lando’s unabashed greeting.
“I- suppose I am? Yes?” Raela laughs out, a bit confused.
“I’ve caught Max on call with you more times than I could count. I’ve been determined to get him to introduce us, I think I could be a great best friend.” Lando grins, proud of himself for offering his friendship to the woman. Raela could notice how proud he was but she could also tell it wasn’t in the ‘I’m a rich man offering to be this commoner’s friend’ or the ‘This woman is pretty and I’m rich so I want her’ ways of pride. She wasn’t entirely sure, but Raela felt she could describe it as ‘Excitable puppy walks into a room full of people he already knows- except one’ type of pride.
“Well, he never told me as such.” Raela leans in conspiratorially and whispers to him, “I think he may be trying to keep me all for himself.” This makes Lando laugh brightly. At that moment, Max could see them laughing, scowling as he groaned to himself.
“Aye, mate, you alright?” Liam asked off to his right, coming to look over the champions shoulder.
“Yes just- Very aware of Lando’s good looks and charming personality in the eyes of the average good natured woman.” Max responds absentmindedly before realizing what he had said as Liam smirks at him.
“You’re worried your plus one is flirtin’ with Lando.” The kiwi stated, causing Max to whirl his head around.
“I- oh fuck it, yeah. I am. She’s- I’m- fuck.” Max stutters out. Liam looks at the Dutchman in slight concern.
“Max, mate, come on. I’ve never seen you flustered about a woman. Who is she?” He asks gently, coaxing Max to explain.
“She’s the woman who’s supposed to be my whole universe.” He says softly, glancing back out at Raela and Lando who were trying very painfully to not completely laugh during the Mercedes livery reveal. Max had no doubt they were jointly talking shit about George.
“Your whole universe?” Liam scoffs for a moment before Max shoots him a scalding glare making Liam throw his hands up in surrender. Before they could continue, it was time for Max to plaster a grin on his face as they walked out onto the stage.
He glanced down at Raela only to see her staring up at him in complete, unabashed pride, her face aglow even in the dimmed room with a bright grin. His heart leapt in his throat as his grin grew brighter and more genuine as she clapped loudly and cheered for him. As he looked at Lando, the fellow driver gave Max an equally bright grin and a thumbs up as he very pointedly mouthed the words ‘Best Friends!’ before making a slicing motion at his neck and following with ‘Nothing more!’ and then began clapping for his friend. Max chuckled and continued to wave to the crowd.
——
As they finally reached the hotel, a very dead asleep toddler snoring in Raela’s arms as they got to their room, Raela couldn’t stop the grin from blossoming on her features. Gently setting Fable down before discreetly shuffling the toddlers skirt down, she managed to slip a small pair of sweatpants onto Fable before tucking her into the small second bed. Flouncing over to the suite couch, Raela plopped down before sighing.
“Thank you so much again for all of this Max. This has been a beautiful experience, and I’m so glad Lando and I are friends now! You have no clue how much this means to me.” She expresses dreamily, curling up against the driver. Max sputtered for a second at how close she had gotten, not yet having fully cuddled with the woman currently sleepily nuzzled into his side.
Max could feel the subtle vibration along his entire right side where she lay, fighting himself so hard not to try and go further lest she believe him to be insane after. All he could do was gently bring his arm around her as she slowly began to nod off, not even having taken off her dress or makeup yet. ‘But honestly,’ Max thought as he nodded off, ‘This is probably the best moment of my life.’ With the biggest, most relaxed grin he had ever produced, Max fell asleep with Raela curled in his arms and Fable asleep soundly in the bed.

AMES WHAT IF 46 WITH MALLEUS WHAT IF MALLEUS WHAT IF HELP AAAAAAAA
yeah yeah YEAH... I rescinded my usual angst for something sweeter bc ik we're all out in the trenches rn with the c7 update <3
SACCHARINE
Inc: Malleus, Reader, an old bookkeeper guy WC: 2.7k Warnings: Noneee this is nice i promise LMAO. A little Malleus x Reader, but you can def take it as platonic banter or romantic undertone (reader's just out to poke fun) Excerpt: He leans back ever so slightly to peer around the shelf at the new arrival. When his attention locks on them, his eyebrows raise in surprise as he sets yet another book aside. Oh, you. He didn’t know you knew this store.
The bite of winter is a sentimental reminder of home as he pushes open the glass door, listening to the chime of the bell above signify his arrival. He’s almost immediately assaulted by the scent of leather and old pages, mixed with a dash of something cinnamon-like from further within. His footsteps cause the floorboards beneath to groan in protest—how humbling—as the elderly man from behind the counter turns his cataract-clouded eyes Malleus’ way.
“Back so soon?” His voice is as frail as the books his store contains, straining with over seventy years of speaking as he sets his newspaper down. Malleus raises an eyebrow before letting the front door swing shut behind him. He frequently fears the frigid air from outside may take the bookkeeper down. “I could have sworn you just visited yesterday.”
“Did I?” Malleus’ voice is light as he begins to circle the front of the store, his ease making it apparent just how familiar he is with the place. “I fear we’re both losing time, in that case.”
The bookkeeper snorts before lifting his paper up again and adjusting the glasses which perch precariously on his nose. “You’re too young to be talking about losing time.”
“And you’re too old to be bemoaning it,” Malleus shoots back with a slight grin on his lips. Before, he may have been reluctant to exchange banter with the man, lest he offend him somehow. But almost three years of visits has now reassured him that the old man can take whatever Malleus throws—and give it back tenfold.
A chuckle leaves the bookkeeper, followed by a wheeze and a coughing fit. The sound brings Malleus to a pause until he receives a wave of reassurance. At that, Malleus focuses his attention on the books, moving swiftly to the back of the store where the first-edition copies reside. Because money is no issue for him, he’s taken to indulging in rare purchases to sate his curiosity (and to keep the bookstore afloat, although he’ll never admit to such).
He’s starting to form a small pile on the table next to him when he hears the bell chiming once more. He can’t see the front door from the corner where he hides, but he can hear the creaking of floorboards as someone else enters. The bookkeeper coughs again before speaking a greeting, which is echoed in turn by a voice that captures Malleus’ attention further. He leans back ever so slightly to peer around the shelf at the new arrival. When his attention locks on them, his eyebrows raise in surprise as he sets yet another book aside.
Oh, you.
He didn’t know you knew this store.
Your voice is cheerful as you approach the desk, speaking with the bookkeeper about where you may find the textbooks in here. Malleus isn’t trying to listen in—after all, that’s a terribly rude thing to do—but it’s hard for him not to completely lock in on your voice any time he hears it. He’s taking books off the shelves and setting them aside now without even registering it as he continues to listen in.
“—alchemy books. I have a textbook for the class, but some of the concepts are still quite unfamiliar to me, so I’m hoping for… supplemental reading, I guess?” You sound almost bashful as the bookkeeper shuffles out from behind the desk, hobbling his way to the shelves near Malleus and leaving you to trail behind. For some reason, the proximity makes Malleus sink further into the corner, as though he’s trying to hide from you as he grabs the books.
It isn’t that he’s avoiding you like he would Sebek or Silver, should they try to hunt him down in here. More that… well. He feels it slightly embarrassing to be caught holding himself up in this store, even if by the likes of you. He begins to move along the shelves in his bid to escape before being spotted. He would simply leave more than enough madol on the counter to pay for the books and depart into the blustering streets with no further incident.
“Well, I’m not too familiar with what you NRC students need…” The bookkeeper sighs, the sound of books being shuffled around indicating what you’re both up to right now. Malleus is close to rounding the corner to get out of this section when he hears a thoughtful hum.
“But I know someone who is. Malleus, would you mind helping us out for a moment?”
Exposed!
Malleus draws to a short stop with the books cradled in his arms as he reluctantly peers over his shoulder in your direction. He sees the bookkeeper looking from around the shelf at him, and then he sees your head poke out as well. Your eyebrows shoot up and you half-point his way.
“Malleus?” You repeat, confusion lacing your words. Understandable. No one expects the Housewarden of Diasomnia, as you know him, to be trying to creep out of a bookstore on a dull Saturday afternoon. He clears his throat and straightens up before facing you both.
“Prefect. How surprising to encounter you here.” He hums, his voice definitely not betraying the silent yelling of protest that’s playing in his mind. The bookkeeper's face lights up when he realizes you both know each other, and then a cunning glint appears in those milky blue eyes, of which Malleus knows spells out his inevitable demise.
“You two know each other, hm? That ought to make it easier, then.” The bookkeeper moves to return to his desk, but not before patting Malleus’ arm in passing. “I appreciate the help.”
“I never…” Malleus mumbles, before sighing and simply choosing to nod instead. If there’s one thing he’s come to learn from dealing with both his grandmother and Lilia, it’s that when the elderly decide on something, it’s near pointless to argue otherwise. He watches the bookkeeper depart with a scathing look at the man’s back before his expression eases and he turns his attention back to you. Then, he sighs. “What is it that you’re searching for?”
You’re still gawking at him, but it’s with his words that you quickly right yourself again and clear your throat, tugging at the scarf around your neck. “Alchemy books. I have it next term and I’m dead terrified Crewel will end up keeping me after every class. Ace and Deuce have the basics down, but I…”
“—are not from here, and therefore failed to receive it at the elementary level.” Malleus finishes off as he comes to stand by your side. He peers up at the textbooks available with a slight frown. Most of them are so outdated that trying to learn concepts would be pointless, while others have little relevance at all to what Crewel teaches. He hums to himself as you alternate between peering at him and at the shelves.
“Bad selection?” You finally ask, and he nods sombrely.
“Terrible selection.” He speaks louder than necessary and leans back to give a pointed look at the bookkeeper, who once again returns it tenfold. The exchange does make Malleus’ lip twitch up in amusement again before he looks back to the shelves. “I’m afraid that these novels would serve better in aiding you for a history paper than an actual alchemy class.”
“Damn.” You press your hands on your hips as you look at the options despairingly. “Might have to pay out for tutor lessons at this rate…”
Tutor lessons? Malleus isn’t entirely sure of your financial situation, but considering the dorm that you live in, he bets that you sit on the lower end of the wealth spectrum. Paying for additional lessons would be sure to create a dent in your wallet that may become dangerous over time. His smile fades slightly and he narrows his eyes.
“I have a few books back in my room that you can take. They are textbooks, but they are ones that the course no longer uses. I’m not sure how much they’ll help, but they may at least keep you from paying additional costs.” He adjusts his grip on the small library he holds as he looks back your way. “I likely would have thrown them out when I finished at NRC anyway.”
Your shoulders relax as a relieved grin spreads across your face. “Seriously? How much for them?”
“Don’t concern yourself with paying me.” He nudges you to follow him to the front of the store. The bookkeeper watches keenly as he sets the books down to be checked out. First editions, with a few second reprints in the pile. You stand close by his side as you gaze over his selections.
“You got a lot of fantasy books there,” you muse as you begin lifting the books to peer at the covers. Malleus raises his eyebrow while focusing on pulling his wallet out to pay. “Fantasy, fantasy, a harlequin romance looking one,”
“What?” His attention snaps back to the pile at that comment as you laugh over his reaction. He’s sure he put those ones back before checking out.
“I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Although I wouldn’t judge you if there was one or two—a lot of people are suckers for that happy ending.” You nudge his side playfully as the bookkeeper scans the last of the novels. When he reads out the total, Malleus ignores the wheezing sound he hears from your direction before paying it with debit—something Lilia was dead insistent he got. It’s only when the two of you are leaving the store that you finally speak, your voice sounding as though in pain from the words you just heard.
“Seven hundred madol dropped just like that?” You sigh as you put your hands in your pockets. The two of you come to a stop just outside the store as Malleus adjusts the bag he holds to pull on his gloves.
“Well. It was for a good reason.” Snow is beginning to fall around you both in the form of large white flakes as you wait patiently for him to finish. Your red scarf is the brightest thing in this land of bleak white, gray, and orange from the shop lights that you stand in. He thinks it suits you—to be a splash of color against the monotonous world.
You seem to disagree with him as you laugh, your breath escaping in the form of mist that dances to the skies above. “Right. Are you in a rush to head back, or can you spare a few more minutes?”
The question intrigues him enough to look up from where he’s wrestling with his one glove to your expectant gaze. Your expression becomes more amused as you move forward to help.
“I have time. Why?” He allows you to touch his wrist and fix his attire because it’s oddly endearing. The casual compassion that you seem to show for everyone around you is something he can’t relate to—perhaps it’s a uniquely human thing. All the Fae he knows tend to be reserved in everything they do, and yet upon coming to NRC, he’s discovered this is not quite the norm.
_____________________________
Never Peak is precisely the kind of place one would read about in a novel. It’s a quaint location, with murals painted on the walls within and enough windows that the space is flooded with light. Malleus appreciates the warmth that fills his body when he enters the cafe behind you, moving to a nearby table to take a seat. A few patrons send him surprised looks as he settles in and you dart off to the front counter, insisting that ‘you’ll get him something nice.’
He isn’t overly bothered by the looks. He can only hope they won’t turn into questions as he props his chin in his hand and pulls out one of his books. It’s a first edition tale written in a language he doubts many know anymore, if any at all. Blessed be that his tutors drilled these things into his head, lest he ever ‘encounter someone who speaks it!’ down the line. He opens the front cover, wincing at the way the spine creaks in protest and the pages flutter up, before beginning to read the first chapter. He’s vaguely aware of your presence at the front counter, and he keeps a part of his attention on you while waiting for your return.
Fortunately, the line is short enough that you return moments later, announcing your presence by setting down a large porcelain cup in front of him.
“Okay, so.” You also set down a plate with an array of little pastries on it as you throw yourself into the seat across from him. “The guys and I discovered this recently and it’s been blowing our minds ever since. What you need to do is bite into one of these pastries, right? And then don’t swallow the pastry, but instead take a drink of the thing I bought you and swallow it all at once. It’s like abstract art in your mouth, I swear.”
The cup you’ve set down is so full of whipped cream that he can’t tell what kind of drink you bought. He looks between it and the pastries in interest before grabbing the cups handle. “Abstract art in my mouth?”
“Yeah like, pop! Bang!” You explain eagerly as you grab your own mug. You pick up one of the pastries and take a generous bite before following up with a swig from your mystery drink. Malleus stares at you in both amusement and skepticism as you nod your head and wave a hand. “It’s worth it, believe me.”
“Pop, bang.” He mumbles under his breath before following the steps you just demonstrated. He takes a bite of a pastry, his brow furrowing at the creamy sweetness that floods his mouth, before taking a drink from his mug. Whatever you bought has a spicy taste to it, and when it touches the pastry, it creates an explosion of flavor so saccharine that he leans back into his seat in surprise. “Oh?”
“Right?” You’re grinning ear to ear as you wave your pastry. “It’s like the sweetness is amplified by ten.”
You seem so excited to share this moment with him that he doesn’t want to tell you he isn’t exactly a fan of saccharine flavors. The sweetness can be overwhelming to his senses and make his stomach-ache in the aftermath. But you look so eager, and he knows that this makes you feel better for taking the books he offered, that he takes another bite of the pastry and repeats the process. If this will make him curl up on his bed for the next few hours with stomach pain strong enough to cripple a bull, at least it’ll be worth it for the joy you seem to feel in his presence.
“Do you like it?” You ask once more, leaning on the table as he swallows. Malleus takes a breath and sets his mug down. The snow still falls outside, the faint smell of leather from the books still permeates between you both, and warmth is beginning to flood his body from the spiced drink he’s downing in your honour. He looks to your face, to the sunny smile on your lips and the joy in your gaze, and exhales softly.
“It’s wonderful, Prefect. Absolutely wonderful.”

In this ultimate guide, we'll break down every major chord category, give you easy-to-read charts, and help you apply them musically.
What Are Guitar Chords?
A guitar chord is a group of notes played simultaneously to create harmony. Most chords are formed by pressing strings down on specific frets and strumming either all or some strings. There are thousands of chords, but the good news? You only need to learn a few to start playing your favorite songs. Also Read:- How Many Guitar Chords are there ? The Chord Wheel: Your Music Theory Shortcut The chord wheel is a simple circular chart that shows the relationship between chords in each key. It’s powerful because it lets you: - Understand which chords work together (e.g., in C major: C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am) - Build chord progressions faster - Remember which chords belong in each key For beginners, this tool demystifies how songs are written and makes it easier to memorize chords by context. Tip: Keep a physical chord wheel near your practice area. It's a visual reinforcement of musical logic.
Types of Guitar Chords
1. Open Chords Open chords use open strings (unfretted) and are great for beginners. Most common open chords: - C Major - A Major - G Major - E Major - D Major - A Minor - E Minor - D Minor ✅ Pro Tip: Master open chords before jumping into barre chords. 2. Barre Chords These use one finger to "bar" across the fretboard. They're movable shapes—once you know one, you can slide it anywhere. Popular barre chord shapes: - E-shape major barre (e.g. F, G, A) - A-shape major barre - Minor barre chords (E minor shape) 3. Power Chords (5 Chords) Power chords are simple two-note shapes used in rock, punk, and metal. Examples: - E5, A5, D5 - Shape: Root + Fifth (e.g. 1st and 5th fret notes) 🎸 Used in: Green Day, Nirvana, Blink-182 4. Major and Minor Chords These are your basic happy and sad chords. They're triads (3 notes). Major chords = Root + Major 3rd + 5th Minor chords = Root + Minor 3rd + 5th Example: - C Major: C–E–G - A Minor: A–C–E 5. Seventh Chords Seventh chords add a jazzy, bluesy flavor. Types: - Dominant 7 (C7) - Major 7 (Cmaj7) - Minor 7 (Cm7) Why learn them? They show up in blues, soul, funk, jazz, and even pop. 6. Suspended Chords (Sus2, Sus4) Suspended chords replace the third with either a 2nd or 4th. Common shapes: - Csus2 = C–D–G - Csus4 = C–F–G They create tension and resolution in music. 7. Diminished & Augmented Chords Advanced flavors of harmony. - Diminished (dim or °) = Root + b3 + b5 - Augmented (aug or +) = Root + 3 + #5 Use these for tension and drama in progressions. How to Practice All Guitar Chords Efficiently 1. Group by Shape, Not Alphabet Instead of going A to G, group chords by hand shapes. For example: - E-shape major barre chords (E, F, G, A, B) - A-shape minor barre chords (Am, Bm, Cm, etc.) Grouping makes it easier to remember visually and kinesthetically. 2. Use the Circle of Fifths Practice chords in intervals of fifths: - C → G → D → A → E → B → F# → C# → Ab → Eb → Bb → F → C This mirrors how many songs are written and trains your ear. 3. Daily Rotation Routine Create a weekly schedule: - Monday: Open chords - Tuesday: Barre chords - Wednesday: Dominant 7ths - Thursday: Minor 7ths / Maj7 - Friday: Diminished / Augmented - Saturday: Chord progressions - Sunday: Review & jam 4. Play Songs Immediately Instead of drilling chords in isolation, learn songs that use them. This helps with contextual memorization. Should Your Chiropractor Adjust Your Neck, A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding Cervical Chiropractic Adjustments
When it comes to chiropractic care, one of the most frequently asked questions is, "Should your chiropractor adjust your neck?" This question arises from both curiosity and concern, as the cervical spine (the neck region) is a delicate and vital part of the human body. Chiropractic neck adjustments, also known as cervical manipulations, are a common practice aimed at improving the function of the nervous system, relieving pain, and restoring mobility. However, the idea of someone manipulating the neck can cause apprehension for many. In this blog post, we’ll dive deep into the world of cervical chiropractic adjustments to help you make an informed decision.
Understanding the Cervical Spine
The cervical spine consists of seven vertebrae, labeled C1 to C7, which support the head, protect the spinal cord, and allow a wide range of head and neck movements. The top two vertebrae, C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis), play a crucial role in the rotation of the head. The cervical spine is surrounded by muscles, ligaments, and nerves, making it a complex structure that is essential for both mobility and stability.
Given its complexity, the cervical spine can be prone to various issues, including:
Neck Pain: Often caused by poor posture, stress, or injuries.
Headaches: Many headaches, particularly tension headaches, and migraines, are linked to neck issues.
Limited Range of Motion: Stiffness or difficulty moving the neck can result from muscle tension or misalignment of the vertebrae.
Nerve Impingement: Herniated discs or misaligned vertebrae can press on nerves, leading to pain, tingling, or numbness in the arms or hands.
What Is a Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment?
A cervical chiropractic adjustment is a procedure where a chiropractor applies controlled force to the cervical spine to correct misalignments (subluxations) of the vertebrae. The goal of this adjustment is to restore proper alignment, improve joint mobility, reduce pain, and enhance overall function.
Chiropractors use different techniques to perform neck adjustments, including:
Manual Adjustments: This is the most common technique where the chiropractor uses their hands to apply a quick, precise thrust to the neck.
Instrument-Assisted Adjustments: Some chiropractors use specialized instruments to deliver a controlled force to the cervical spine, which can be gentler than manual adjustments.
Drop Table Adjustments: A specialized table with sections that drop slightly during the adjustment, allowing gravity to assist in the manipulation.
Flexion-Distraction Technique: Often used for patients with herniated discs, this method involves a gentle stretching motion that helps relieve pressure on the spine.
The Benefits of Cervical Chiropractic Adjustments
Many patients report significant benefits from cervical chiropractic adjustments, including:
Pain Relief: One of the primary reasons people seek chiropractic care is to alleviate pain. Cervical adjustments can reduce neck pain, headaches, and even upper back pain.
Improved Range of Motion: Misalignments in the cervical spine can limit your ability to move your neck. Adjustments can restore mobility and flexibility, making it easier to perform daily activities.
Headache Relief: For those suffering from tension headaches or migraines, cervical adjustments can reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.
Enhanced Nervous System Function: The spine protects the spinal cord, which is a key part of the nervous system. By ensuring proper alignment, chiropractic adjustments can improve the function of the nervous system, leading to better overall health.
Reduced Muscle Tension: Cervical adjustments can relieve tension in the neck muscles, which is often a source of discomfort and stiffness.
Are Cervical Adjustments Safe?
Safety is a major concern when it comes to any form of medical treatment, and cervical adjustments are no exception. The good news is that, when performed by a licensed and experienced chiropractor, cervical adjustments are generally safe. However, as with any medical procedure, there are some risks to consider.
Potential Risks and Side Effects
Soreness: Some patients may experience mild soreness or discomfort in the neck following an adjustment, which typically resolves within 24 hours.
Fatigue: It’s not uncommon to feel tired after a chiropractic adjustment as the body begins to heal and adjust to the new alignment.
Headaches: While cervical adjustments can relieve headaches, some patients may experience a temporary increase in headaches immediately after treatment.
Stroke: One of the most serious risks associated with cervical adjustments is the possibility of a stroke. This is extremely rare, with studies estimating the risk at about 1 in 1 million to 1 in 2 million cervical manipulations. The risk occurs when an artery in the neck is damaged during the adjustment, leading to a stroke. However, it’s important to note that this risk is lower than the risk of serious side effects from common medications like NSAIDs.
Who Should Avoid Cervical Adjustments?
While most people can safely receive cervical chiropractic adjustments, there are certain individuals for whom this treatment may not be recommended, including:
Patients with Severe Osteoporosis: People with advanced osteoporosis may be at risk for fractures during an adjustment.
People with Severe Spinal Instability: Those with significant instability in the cervical spine, due to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or certain congenital conditions, should avoid adjustments.
Patients with Severe Nerve Compression: In cases where nerve compression is severe, surgical intervention may be required, and chiropractic adjustments may not be appropriate.
Individuals with a History of Stroke: Those who have experienced a stroke or have significant risk factors for stroke should discuss the risks and benefits of cervical adjustments with their chiropractor and primary care physician.
What to Expect During a Cervical Chiropractic Adjustment
If you decide to undergo a cervical chiropractic adjustment, here’s what you can typically expect:
Initial Consultation: Your chiropractor will conduct a thorough examination, which may include a medical history review, physical examination, and possibly imaging studies like X-rays. This helps the chiropractor understand your condition and determine if a cervical adjustment is appropriate.
Treatment Plan: Based on your examination, the chiropractor will develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. This may include cervical adjustments, as well as other treatments like soft tissue therapy, exercises, and lifestyle advice.
The Adjustment: During the adjustment, you will typically lie on a chiropractic table. The chiropractor will position your head and neck and apply a quick, controlled thrust to the cervical spine. You may hear a popping sound, which is the release of gas from the joint as it moves back into place.
Aftercare: After the adjustment, your chiropractor may provide advice on activities to avoid, stretches to perform, or other self-care measures to support your recovery.
Making an Informed Decision
Ultimately, the decision to undergo a cervical chiropractic adjustment is a personal one that should be made based on a thorough understanding of the potential benefits and risks. Here are some key points to consider:
Trust Your Chiropractor: Make sure you are working with a licensed and experienced chiropractor who you trust. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and express any concerns you may have.
Understand the Risks: While the risks of cervical adjustments are low, it’s important to be aware of them and weigh them against the potential benefits.
Consider Your Health History: If you have any underlying health conditions or concerns, discuss them with your chiropractor to ensure that cervical adjustments are safe for you.
Alternative Treatments: If you are uncomfortable with cervical adjustments, ask your chiropractor about alternative treatments. Many chiropractors offer a range of therapies, including soft tissue work, rehabilitative exercises, and low-force techniques that may be suitable for you.
Conclusion
Cervical chiropractic adjustments can offer significant benefits for those suffering from neck pain, headaches, and other related conditions. However, like any medical treatment, they come with potential risks. By working closely with a qualified chiropractor, you can make an informed decision about whether cervical adjustments are right for you. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion if you’re unsure. Remember, your chiropractor is there to help you achieve better health, and open communication is key to a successful treatment outcome.

.
A4: Are they a pessimist or an optimist?
Generally leans more towards optimist I think. Maybe not so much in always believing things will go great, but in thinking it'll be fine if they Dont.
A5: Are they good at handling change in their life?
Yes because see above. she ROLLS WITH THE PUNCHES. even tho it kinda seems like she keeps getting punched and punched and punched and p
A11: Does your OC put others’ needs before their own?
If it's someone she really cares about yea she can Tend to (she's too nice to all of her bandmates). She tries to be Likeable and it does get her far in that sense but girl.......
B5: Do they hold doors open for people?
Yeah but i think she never times it correctly so she's always just standing there awkwardly for 30 extra seconds or accidentally forcing someone too far away to start running to get there quicker.
B8: Is your OC considered funny? Do they believe they’re funny?
Yes to both but I think she can lean towards a little too self-deprecating depending on the audience. Bullied fat girl behavior.
B15: Does your OC enjoy social events, such as parties, clubs, et cetera..?
Yesssss she'll do pretty much anything if invited but concerts are the place to be. Fan of basement shows and small venues with bars. Always seems to know at least a handful of people there every time.
C5: Do your OC’s morals and rules of common decency go out the window when it comes to those they don’t like, or when it’s inconvenient? Aka, are their morals situational?
I think she mainly just treats people the way she'd want to be treated even if she doesn't like them. But I think she'd also hope for someone to be honest and tell her to fuck off if she was being shitty, so I don't think a bit of meanness is off the table. I don't think she has a capacity to be super evil tho she just wants everyone to have a good time (altho sometimes that can lead to conflict in its own way).
C7: Do they believe people change over time? If so, is it a natural process or does it take effort?
I think she believes in both depending on the situation. She believes in the power of shit happening to you and coming out a different person once it's all over. YES she makes excuses for Aspen being nasty to everyone and not trying harder to make her life not suck but she KNOWS what its like to be depressed so she cant JUDGE.
D1: How religious is your OC? What do they practice, if anything? If they don’t associate with any religion, what do they think of religion in general?
She's not religious and doesn't think about it often, but I think her family are probably loosely some sort of Christian/Catholic. She does not enjoy the politics of it or the condescending way it makes her parents act toward her/people act towards others in general most of the time but shes not an active hater. They can do what they wanna do, she supposes.
D5: Do they believe in ghosts? If not, why? If so, do they think they’re magical/tie into their religion, or are they scientifically plausible?
Believes in ghosts because she thinks it'd be fun to go ghost hunting.
E1: Would you say that your OC is intelligent? In what ways? Would your OC agree?
She thinks shes pretty dumb because she didn't do well in school, but shes Not. I think she's above-average in terms of her interpersonal intelligence, they way she communicates with other people, and I guess just 'street smarts' in general. and musically, of course <3
E5: What’s their highest education level? Do they want to continue their education?
She finished high school with lowish-average grades and has been poorly chipping away at her gen ed requirements in college for a few years because she feels like it's expected of her (despite not really having much to do with her parents nowadays). She doesn't really want to continue, though, the sunk cost and aforementioned expectations are the only things keeping her going. Oh and now also Bruno encouraging her to do it bcz hes a nerd.
F2: What’s their ideal home look like? Where is it?
She doesn't expect anything fancy; she just wants to not be a step away from living in her car at all times. She'd like to live in a small house or apartment, maybe by herself or maybe with her bandmates for company. She'd paint it whatever crazy color she wanted and decorate it with all her fun merch. It'd be messy but it'd be hers. She does love Vegas but she'd be willing to move out to Reno or some other big city like LA or NYC or etc..... somewhere with a good underground music scene. She fantasizes about it often.
F7: What’s their “dream career” or job situation?
She'd love to be able to make a living doing music fulltime. If not in a band, I think she'd enjoy being a producer or promoter or doing work for a label or running a venue or something. She doesn't necessarily have all of the skills for that but she dreams big and hopes someone would take her under their wing.
F10: Do they engage in any of the arts? How good do you intend them to be? Would they agree they are?
Shes a musician of course. Her main thing is drumming but she does also write lyrics for her band sometimes (especially pre-aspen) and help with merch ideas and such too. In terms of skill, she thinks it's the passion that counts and shes kinda right, as least for her genre. She's not a super technical player but she is skilled enough to play interestingly and powerfully while keeping it tasteful. She's played for many years it's a result of much practice. I think her band is half experienced musicians such as herself, and half total noobs such as Aspen. it Works tho its Raw.
G2: Who makes up your OC’s family, at least the more important members to them?
She's an only child conceived via IVF (didn't tell her about it until she turned 18). Her mom and (non bio) dad raised her, and I think her grandparents and cousins and aunts and uncles are numerous and part of her life as well, as least when she lived at home. In recent years she's also been ancestry hunting and discovered a few sperm donor siblings that she never really followed through with talking to much + Bruno :) She sought him out mainly because she found out he lived nearby-ish and wanted to know what his deal was, if she could relate to him, etc. Also kinda interested in investigating wtf his issue is and if it's something she should worry about :|
G4: What kind of childhood did your OC have?
It wasn't particularly tortured or anything but u do get bullied by many of your peers and family members for being a weird punk fat (and also gay later on) kid. I think her parents kinda quietly held her to a higher standard/resented her for being herself because they spent so much money and time and trouble just to have a......completely average kid. This was not something communicated with her (until she was 18 as mentioned before) but it was Felt. The relationship with her parents was/is kinda strained because of that + just being a loud and annoying kid in general, but its not necessarily at the point of hate. just Complicated. She tries to avoid them nowadays. She did have friends in school due to her extroversion and pleasant personality luckily, even though she was weird. Probably a band kid.
H2: Is your OC a thoughtful partner, in whatever aspect of that you want to cover?
Yeah, just because shes so niceys and good with people in general, she can really feel out the things that someone might enjoy. But I think she's used to having to be the more giving/attentive/dominant one in a relationship so she gives it a lot of effort. I think its part of why the idea of being with Aspen is kinda exciting to her despite the weirdness of it; she's not used to being the one being obsessed over LOL
H6: Has your OC ever cheated on anyone or been cheated on?
She wouldn't cheat but she does seem like the type to get cheated on kinda chronically.
I2: Do they have any eating requirements or preferences? Allergies, vegetarian, organic-only, religious restrictions…
Fast food only <3
J5: Are they or would they protest for a cause they’re passionate about?
Yes she would do it but shes not super in-the-know politically despite the music scene she's in. If someone invites her tho and it sounds reasonable she will BE there.
L2: What do you consider the biggest themes in your character, if any?
I think the overall theme of everything here is Identity and I think she explores that as well in her own ways. Probably in the most literal way compared to everyone else since shes the protag and everything plotwise is kinda triggered by her seeking out her paternal family for a sense of belonging after feeling rejected by her half family. I think her relationship with Aspen is also important here but I can't say much yet because idk whats up yet LOL. She's kinda got boring protag disease rn but hopefully u can see my vision.

Week 2 - Theory - Polar Patterns
As they're such an essential element of recording with microphones, I chose to give an extended post on polar patterns to explore each pattern in greater depth.
The polar pattern of a microphone dictates its sensitivity to sound in relation to where the sound is coming from around it.
Omnidirectional
Omnidirectional microphones capture sound evenly from every direction, and as a result does not to be pointed in any specific direction. This can be useful in certain circumstances, however this design does mean it cannot be pointed away from unwanted sources of sound.
Typically, omnidirectional polar patterns deliver the best bass response as well as the flattest frequency response. In addition, it is least sensitive to wind sounds and general handling noise. It's commonly used for acoustic instruments in studios or larger sound sources such as a choir or orchestra.
Cardioid
Cardioid is the most common directional polar pattern. It is most sensitive directly at its front, and least sensitive from the back. The pick-up from the sides is reduced, and it is particularly effective at isolating the mic from ambient noise in the room.
In comparison to omnidirectional, cardioid has a greater resistance to feedback, which makes it an excellent choice for live environments. In addition, its typically used to highlight one sound source in particular, such as vocals.
Supercardioid
Supercardioid is extremely resistant to feedback, and as a result produces a very dry signal. It has a narrower direction of pickup than cardioid, with additional pickup at the rear. An example of a microphone using this pattern would be the AKG C7.
Hypercardioid
Hypercardioid features an even narrower direction of pickup than super, with better rejection of background noise. It is most resistant to feedback, however allows a slightly greater amount of pickup at the rear and sides. This style of polar pattern is often used in drum setups to record snares, with a microphone such as an Audio Technica ATM230.
Figure of eight (bidirectional)
The figure of eight pattern captures an equal amount of side from the front and back of the mic, however completely rejects the sides - this pattern features the highest side rejection of any mentioned. It is commonly used in larger diaphragm and ribbon mics to effectively capture sources with their natural characteristics. One disadvantage of this patter is that it has the least bass response, as well as being most sensitive to handling/wind noise.
General comparison
To summarise, I've attached a table below giving a variety of figures across the five common polar patterns:
