#Tails needs a nap

Heading home:

Set after the final battle, Tom and Maddie are excited they have more kids, Sonic is happy to finally find friends like him, Knuckles is worried and Tails is just tired.

After taking down Robotnik and helping clear some of the damage done to Green Hills the Wachowski family headed home.

Tom and Maddie were upfront in the car and Knuckles, Sonic and Tails were in the back.

Knuckles was firmly clutching the Master emerald in his hands as though frightened if he let it go it would disappear, Tails was squashed comfortably between Sonic and Knuckles, fast asleep having been worn out by the chaos of the battle, and Sonic was sitting with an arm wrapped around Tails, letting the Fox snuggle into him as much as the car seat allowed him, Sonic was thinking about everything that happened over the last two days.

Robotnik had returned and was defeated, the master emerald was both real and in their possession, and now Knuckles and Tails were here.

Mind you Sonic was certainly grateful they were here, not cause they helped him and literally saved his life, but because of the company.

As much as he'd loved being an only child, it could be lonely sometimes, with Tails and Knuckles, that was Likely gonna change.

Sonic was brought out of his thoughts by the sound of Tails stirring next to him.

"Sonic, where are we going?" Tails mumbled, the Kit's voice laced heavily with sleep and he looked ready to konk out again any moment.

"We're going home pal." Sonic simply said gently stroking the Kit behind his ears.

"Home, tha' sounds nice." Tails mumbled before yawning and falling right back to sleep.

Sonic chuckled then looked over at Knuckles who was still stone silent.

"You okay there Knucklehead?" Sonic asked.

Knuckles nodded.

"I am fine hedgehog, I am just...thinking." Knuckles said.

"If it's about Egghead, don't worry we won't see him again, or at least for a while." Sonic said.

"I'm aware, but that is not what is on my mind." Knuckles said.

"Then what is it?" Sonic asked curious.

"I helped Robotnik to acquire the emerald and also hurt you, this town and the Fox, will I truly be accepted into your...family?" Knuckles asked.

"Course you will, Eggman manipulated you and used you into doing those things." Sonic said.

"Besides this family always seems to meet in some weird way." He added.

"It's true, when I first met Sonic I shot him with a bear tranquilliser." Tom said.

"And the Fox hit me with a car on our first meeting." Knuckles added casually.

Tom and Maddie both gaped at Knuckles then at Tails.

"Oh my God, are you OK?" Maddie asked him worriedly.

"I am fine, I have quite a strong body so the car didn't do anything serious, besides he was saving Sonic?" Knuckles said.

"Yeah, he even drove it off a cliff to save me." Sonic added.

"I was wondering where that went." Tom muttered under his breath.

He looked at Tails.

"Remind me not to get on his bad side." He chuckled.

He looked back at Knuckles.

"But don't worry about anything Knuckles, you're part of this family now and if GUN or Robotnik want you back they'll have to step over my cold, dead body." Tom said.

"Same here." Maddie nodded.

For the first time since meeting him Sonic thought he saw a smile on the Echnida's face.

"I certainly hope it doesn't come to that, but I appreciate the sentiment behind it." Knuckles said nodding.

After a while of driving in silence they finally arrived home.

Tom, Maddie and Knuckles all climbed out while Sonic coaxed a deep asleep Tails awake.

"Huh, wh're we." Tails yawned not looking too pleased to be woken up and clearly wanting to go back to sleep.

"We're home pal, but I need you to get up." Sonic said.

Tails grumbled slightly from tiredness but with some assistance from Sonic he climbed out the car.

Sonic took in the kit and saw just how exhausted he really looked, his tails and ears dropped slightly and he could barely keep his eyes open.

"Tired bud?" Sonic asked slightly teasingly.

Tails just yawned his tails flicking slightly as he tried to stifle said yawn behind his hand.

"Yeah." Tails added after a moment.

"I can tell." Sonic chuckled giving Tails a scratch behind the ear before taking ahold of the Kit's hand.

"C'mon bud, let's get you some shut eye." Sonic smiled and Tails nodded too tired to reply.

Meanwhile Tom, Maddie and Knuckles were inspecting the damage.

"All in all it's not too bad, we can definitely stay tonight, but we should probably have this fixed soon." Maddie asked.

"I'll get started then." Knuckles said.

"What do you mean pal?" Tom asked confused.

"I have inflicted this damage upon your home and I should be the one to fix it." Knuckles said.

"Honey, that wasn't your fault, that horrible man manipulated you into doing those things." Maddie said.

"But I need to attone for my actions." Knuckles said.

"You already have Knuckles by saving the town, that's more than enough." Tom said.

Knuckles nodded, though he didn't seem fully convinced.

"Now, let's show you guys where you'll be staying for the night." Maddie said.

"We can stay?" A tiny voice asked.

The others turned to see Sonic and Tails behind her, Tails was looking at her curiously.

"Of course Baby, we'd love you to stay with us." Maddie said.

"Yeah kid, you're more than welcome." Tom nodded.

Tails nodded and yawned heavily leaning into Sonic's side.

"Okay, I think that's the signal for bedtime, come on guys." Tom said.

They went inside the house and after being greeted (and licked) by Ozzie they went up to Sonic's room.

Tails gaped in awe as they went into the room.

"Wow, it's so cool in here." Tails said looking around the room in awe.

"Okay guys, get yourselves ready for bed, it's been a long day." Tom said.

Sonic climbed into his bed and Tails went over to the beanbag chair and climbed onto it, humming contently as he lay down on it, apparently finding it comfortable enough.

"We've got a spare sleeping bag in the garage Knuckles, if you'd like it, looks like Miles has already claimed the bean bag.

Knuckles looked over and indeed Tails was stretched out on the bean bag in a ball, mumbling contently as he slept.

Nearby Sonic looked over with a very fond look, Knuckles couldn't help but feel the same.

Knuckles looked back at Maddie.

"Yes please, that would be very nice." Knuckles nodded.

Maddie nodded and soon returned with said sleeping bag, as well as a blanket which she gently draped over Tails.

Maddie then set up the sleeping bag for Knuckles who after thanking her climbed in.

"Goodnight boys, sleep well." Maddie said.

She kissed each of the boys on their foreheads before leaving for Tom's room.

Sonic yawned and stretched out on his bed.

"Night Knux, I hope you like it here." Sonic said.

"Goodnight." Knuckles replied.

Knuckles looked at Sonic, then Tails and with a small smile closed his eyes.

"I think I will." Knuckles mumbled to himself.

Thank you so much! I absolutely have a lot of wips I'd be happy to share, I know it's been a minute since I've been able to upload something to AO3. I've been plugging away at "When the World Breaks" for the past several weeks and it's been pretty slow going :') I've had a lot more going on in the beginning of the year than I expected, so that's derailed writing quite a bit, but progress is still being made! So I'll share a little of Shamar's chapter as a sneak peek since it's been so long in the making <3

“Hey, guys! Long time no see.” Sonic flashed them a grin as two of his friends rushed over to him. “I see ya got a head start without me!”

“We wanted to let you sleep in a bit!” Chip chirped, flying in excited, dizzying circles around Sonic’s head.

“So we thought we’d take Tails’s medal tracker out for a spin and see if we could speed the process along for you,” Amy added.

Sonic’s eyes dropped to the abaya draped over her arm. “Oh, yeah. I can see that,” he snickered.

Rolling her eyes with a “tch,” Amy placed one hand on her hip. “There was a medal in the market, you know. And Tails can confirm it, too. Right, Tails?” She looked to the two-tailed fox as he finally made his way over to them, eyes still glued to his tablet.

“Yeah. But the shopping was definitely a detour.”

“Besides, we’re already ahead of schedule!” Amy waved off, ignoring Tails entirely and prompting him to finally glance up at her with a bland look. “Professor Pickle and I already figured out the next temple is in Adabat before we left. After that, there’s just one more to go!”

“Adabat, huh?” Tails hummed, punching in generic coordinates in the Miles Electric. “Not exactly next door…”

“But not on the other side of the world, either!” Sonic held up a finger. “All things considered, Adabat’s not a bad stop.”

“So, since we wanted to let you get some more rest, Professor Pickle encouraged us to do some sightseeing.”

“He said we could take in some of the sights while searching for the medals. With the emphasis being on the medals and not, you know…” Tails gestured wordlessly to the market around them.

“Okay, fine. You’ve made your point,” Amy sighed. “I still think we should get some kind of refreshment before we keep looking. It’s easy to get dehydrated in heat like this!”

“Refreshments! Yeah!” Chip did a flip in the air, then flopped atop Sonic’s head. “Please, Sonic, I’m so thirsty. It’s so dry.”

Sonic laughed. “Sounds like a plan to me. Let’s get you something to drink—”

“And eat!”

“And eat,” Sonic tacked on, shaking his head fondly. 

“Perfect!” Amy clapped her hands together. “Let’s all get something to eat at a cute little cafe, then you three can go searching for more sun and moon medals while I finish up shopping! I want to pick up a little something for Cream and Vanilla while we’re here. I missed out on souvenirs while we were in Spagonia.”

Tails tucked his tablet under his arm. “I’ll meet up with you guys later. I only got to test my tracker for a little bit in Holoska, so I need more data to make sure its readings are accurate. And I want to see how much we can shave off the time we spend looking for them. The faster, the better, right?”

Sonic leaned his elbow against the top of Tails’s head. “Can’t argue that!”

Amy sighed. “You really are cut from the same cloth, aren’t you?”

“The coolest cloth around.” Sonic winked, then nudged Tails. “But how ‘bout we grab something to take with us on the go? Then we can get right back to our medal mission and that big brain of yours won’t get too dehydrated before the day’s out.”

The look Tails cast him was none too impressed, but he simply released a heavy sigh and pushed Sonic’s elbow out of his personal space. “Fine. As long as it’s a quick stop. We’ve only got so much daylight before we’re slowed down by the Dark Gaia creatures.”

“‘As long as it’s quick.’ Do you know who I am?” Sonic teased.

This is random, but my beloved Treasure’s Embark test came back recently! I honestly expected more Pit Bull, tbh. The breeds listed under Supermutt are Chow Chow, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, and AmStaff. What a broad variety!

Some relatives were listed, but none closer than a 20% match. To be honest, a big part of why I did this test was to try and find her puppies. When Treasure was first found, she had just weaned a litter of puppies, and it’s really unlikely they’re the only ones she’s ever had. Considering the sorry state she was found in (I haven’t gone into it too much on here, but let’s just say the police were looking to prosecute her previous owner for animal abuse, but couldn’t track them down since she was abandoned), I worry about her poor pups. It’s super unlikely, but I was hoping one of them would be adopted into a doting home someday, and that their owners might do an Embark test too. Maybe someday one of them will turn up.

Either way, it’s very interesting! The golden retriever and Chow Chow are a definite surprise! I’m still gonna keep telling everyone she’s a pittie mix though, and she’s 100% good girl!

Chuu has a vice grip on the sofa she’s sitting on if there’s more than 5 people at a party lmao. She’s not gettin up. N o p e. (Can sometimes be lured out onto the dance floor with a Waltzing number, but will rarely stay for longer than 2 songs before she’s found a way to slither out of being an active party participant. She’d rather chill and eat snacks and watch OTHER people look silly on the dance floor.)

Tuesday is ecstatic to be invited to the dance floor- but he only really knows how to do the stuffy Ishgardian Ball Dance when he first gets invited out to a party lmfao. The amount of people present doesn’t really impact his willingness to come out to the dance floor, but once he learns more ways to dance or even how to just, ‘feel it’ and make it up as he goes he gets much more excited about dancing to upbeat or quicker songs. He is Very good at not stepping on Toes :) (almost as if somebody didn’t want to deal with smushed toes…. 🤔)

Tangy is so zazzed to dance. She is…. Not the best at ballroom dancing or like, whatever you wanna call a couples dance, so. Watch your toes! It doesn’t matter how many people are there but being the center of attention can be kinda daunting :’> she’d rather dance to more upbeat music than slow dances so she’ll probs bow out for drinks and a snack during those to take a breather sjfjdkfs … pls also imagine her doing classic ‘dad’ dance moves or something from the Peanuts x3 [cut cos it’s Long 🫢]

….. 🤔 Ishi will gladly dance with a friend (or friends!) at smaller gatherings- and even invite others out to the floor x3 but at bigger more official events? She’s probably grateful for the excuse to step away from whatever Politically Charged Chat she’s been roped into regarding allied tribes or intercity relations. (She isn’t trained in dance, but will readily learn and follow somebody else’s lead •v•)

Mochiie is someone who’s reluctant to take an invite to the dance floor no matter how many people are present if there’s already people dancing and there’s not much space. He’s uh… conscious of his tail. (Poor guy sent a lalafellin couple sprawling once when he got tangled up in his feet, so he tries to be Overly Cautious now)

😂 Colette will indulge a friend in a dance, and relies more on being able to lift/twirl/dip her dance partner for flair - it’s an All-Eyes-On-Them situation. If Eorzean weapons didn’t have a habit of cracking under the pressure she’d probably be a tank. She prefers music with dramatic flair, to match her flashy dancing style. She laughs a lot more when it’s a Smaller group, there’s less performance pressures 🤧 (I should REALLY pose her dancing with Setsuna at some point… I’ll have to bug my partner for some files x3)

🤔🤔🤔 Levraut was the hardest for me to figure out. He’s classically trained in Ishgardian Dance? But he hates it. He thinks the whole thing looks silly, and he’s not so into huge parties (since they’re usually hosted by The Rich And Influential And Expect A Certain Class Of People yk) … he’d be a hilarious ‘sexy lamp’ for someone to dance with though… I think it would take him some time to feel comfortable dancing in the center of everything but he wouldn’t mind kinda grooving in place around the edges.

Until he’s 5 cups in. And then you have to haul him off the dance floor before he makes more of a fool of himself than he currently is, and tries to start a fight with the Violinist, because it quote ‘sounds like you’re killing the cat what made the strings all over again’ (regardless of if that’s true or not; a drunken Lev craves Rowdy Brawling and will Incite It)
