I've sort of developed a strange relationship with the concept of "realism" in the things I make.

Something I was very into as like, an eleven year old (im not implying this was immature to be into, just that it was formative for me), was speculative biology specifically for dragons, and now, specifically in the case of dragons I find a lot of attempts to make them biologically plausible fully missing the appeal of dragons at all.

Thinking specifically about the supernatural elements of JoM and where the line is drawn. The dagnyds are made from the remains of godlike entities, and are not entirely earthly animals. They have a supernatural origin. It would be fully justified in giving them magic abilities or making magic an aspect of the setting, but have absolutely zero interest in doing so. It doesn't interest me. I think about shit like healing powers or glowy energy attacks and my reaction is just "what does this even add? Why do I need this? Does this make things more interesting?" And it simply doesn't. Healing is more interesting as a prolonged process, combat is more interesting with teeth and claws and metal and blood. These are options which are more realistic, closer to real life, but the realism isn't what makes them interesting: it's physicality.

When I design a creature for this world, I am not thinking about making it biologically plausible, and yet, I try to design things which look like they could 'move under their own power'. There is a sense of heft and mechanical "soundness" which I value more than realism, but often also aligns with looking 'realistic'.

I would say that it's better to serve a narrative than strive for absolute realism, but I don't actually write stories, although I do have ideas for them occasionally. I guess a version of this which is more relevant and applicable is that i prefer to strive for a particular vibe.

I like to think im honest with alot of the writing i do and ideas i present but i can never bring myself to write something purely fantasy, its always gotta be Sci-fi to some degree hidden or otherwise. I've got trouble being earnest about things without bringing out the technological ethics questions. Its a real bad habit of mine that id like to correct or at least address at some point

A long time ago some work buds told me that I was our bosses' favorite And I know I'm bac at taking any sort or compliment or general comment adressed my way but that sounded wild. 1. She's motherly by nature. She's patient with us all. 2. She's a biology professor. We have people from biology on our team. My buds theorized I was her favorite due to the overlap in our careers but newsflash, sadly I'm not a biologist so that argument seemed a bit lacking 3. Although she's kind to everyone the image of her I have burned in my mind is this time she got up from her seat and basically cleaned our mess. This happened after she called my team out because of our performance; team that I lead and team composed by people from a major totally not familiarized with the task at hand. So not only was I the leader I was the only one who wasn't having their first rodeo. So... I took that failure personal. Anyway, today while having our monthly meeting I was explaining our totally half baked ideas and she excited said that she liked one of my proposal to the point she would lend me a book so I can do a bit of research to make the most out of it. And it seems like nothing but.. perhaps I do am her favorite(? Again, it's nothing but books are important and there's 8(? people taking a course she's giving rn yet she chose me to get the book(? Girl I was the slowest writer yesterday, you are giving me so many opportunities and I don't feel deserving of them. And again, the idea of me being a teacher's favorite is wild. I'm not particularly teacher's pet-y and if I were a teacher I ceirtanly wouldn't be picking myself as a favorite. I mean, it's midnight and I haven't found a closure for the speech I gotta present to her tomorrow nor have I looked up the facts I should be drawing on. so... yeah Mrs. Nat I'm so sorry I know you are a free spirit but there's a bunch of great hardworking kids in our project I shouldnt be your favorite, that is setting us both for failure and dissapointment.
