A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting (2020)

If it’s Halloween night and your kids are too little, too scared, or prevented from going trick-or-treating due to a global pandemic, then A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting might be suitable as the night's last movie. The plot is so lethargic, it ought to put its viewers to sleep.
Babysitter Kelly (Tamara Smart) is horrified when a pack of monsters kidnaps Jacob (Ian Ho), the boy she's sitting. Suddenly, Liz (Oona Laurence), a tough-as-nails monster hunter from a secret society of babysitters appears. Refusing to sit by as the Boogeyman/Grand Guignol (Tom Felton) does who knows what to the boy, Kelly accompanies Liz on her investigation.
Based on a trilogy of books from Joe Ballarini (who also writes the screenplay), A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting often feels like the opener of a Disney Channel TV show. It’s got a beginning, middle, and end, the special effects are fine for what this is… but no time is spent defining the characters. It’s like we'll get to the ins and outs of them in a later episode so there's no need to bother with it now.
Everyone we meet is a collection of tropes and clichés, brought to life by so-so actors. Tamara Smart, Oona Laurence, and Ian Ho are just getting their acting careers started. It feels wrong to judge them harshly. The same goes for many of their co-stars. You make excuses until you realize only 1 out of 10 of the humans/creatures you see are even remotely believable or engaging. The picture’s only 94 minutes and it feels like so much longer.
Adults will grow restless watching the bullied math-genius nerdy girl who pines for the hot guy but is stuck babysitting the scaredy-cat whose ice-queen mom has a ridiculously long list of don’ts for the night. It wasn't made for them. Still, this excuse only goes so far. ABGtMH desperately needed a strong emotional anchor to make the story about more than the obvious "confronting your childhood fears" thing. Without it, the underground society of superhero babysitters isn’t anything special and is too silly for you to want more. Nonetheless, we’re teased a half-dozen plot points sure to appear in the sequels this film desperately wants.
The one good thing about this ordeal is Tom Felton. He’s unrecognizable under his monster makeup and has all of the best scenes. The rest is harmless. More accurately, it’s bland. Other than the Grand Guignol, the only entertainment I got came from the casting. We never see Jacob’s father but his mom is portrayed by Tamsen McDonough (rather cartoonishly). I don’t know what’s going on there. Same with Kelly’s father, played by the whitest person in this movie. You look at Canada-born Cameron Bancroft, at Crystal Balint (who plays the mom), and at Tamara Smart. A conversation about the real father must be right around the corner.
Younger audiences may be more enthusiastic about this kiddie adventure. I can only speculate. As an adult, I found it completely forgettable. (November 14, 2020)

Resident Evil (2022)
In today's review, I explore youthful resistance in the face of an established zombie menace. As I attempt a #positive review of the 2022 television adaption Resident Evil #EllaBalinska #TamaraSmart #SienaAgudong #AdelineRudolph #PaolaNúñez #LanceReddick
It is a fact, that while some things remain as timeless as denim jeans, a lot of times, things will inevitably fall out of fashion. While those of a certain age will have fond memories of the Resident Evil franchise, a bunch of less-than-well-received sequels and a constantly evolving market may have limited their appeal to the youth of the day. However, In 2022, the stories of Resident Evil got…

Artemis Fowl (2020)

I feel bad for fans of the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. How unfaithful is this adaptation? They change the titular character from a villain to a hero. If you haven’t read the books you’re also out of luck. Director Kenneth Branagh and screenplay writers Conor McPherson and Hamish McColl are the only ones who understand this story.
12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw) receives a call from a mysterious figure who has kidnapped his father (Colin Farrell). They demand Artemis give them the “Aculos”, a powerful artifact belonging to the realm of fairies. Having no idea where the magical device might be, Artemis orchestrates a complicated plot that will bring it to him instead.
Although he’s given relatable motivations, you instantly reject Artemis' hero status. He’s a stupid person's idea of a genius, meaning he just knows whatever information is relevant to the plot whenever it’s convenient. He holds everyone around him in contempt and has no friends except for his weirdo bodyguard Domovoi “Dom” Butler (Nonso Anozie). Rich and snooty, Artemis is far less sympathetic than the fairy he captures: officer Holly Short (Lara McDonnell). McDonnell is endearing and charismatic. It also helps that Holly is sympathetic towards the humans her people hide from. When she and Artemis become friends, you don’t buy it, particularly not when you learn the Aculos is critical to her civilization’s survival - at least I think that’s why it’s important to them…
Even if you relate to Artemis, there’s no way you’ll follow this plot. It’s too complicated, moves too fast, its rules are poorly - if ever - established, and what you see frequently contradicts logic. Several characters serve no purpose at all, like Dom’s niece, Juliet (Tamara Smart) or the crony under the kidnapper's payroll, Briar Cudgeon (Joshua McGuire). The secret civilization of fairies raises a lot of questions on its own. They have the power to stop time and live at the Earth’s core, meaning they have to use rockets to travel to the surface. If it’s that difficult to interact with humans, how can a troll randomly end up in the middle of the city to tear up a wedding party?
The film walks into the room with an attitude that says “I’m about to marry your mom and there’s nothing you can do about it” but it’s obvious to everyone nothing here will have any consequences whatsoever. This is yet another one of these movies based on a series of books for young adults whose sequels will never happen no matter how many plot threads it leaves hanging. Even if the pandemic hadn’t relegated it to premiering on Disney+, Artemis Fowl radiates the same stink as M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender.
Artemis Fowl has a couple of charming actors but they’re all playing second banana to a protagonist you don’t like. None of it makes any sense, and no one could care enough to untangle this mess to explain it to you. (August 28, 2020)
