The map and the dream
This past month in class, we’ve been traveling, not physically, but through screens, stories, and shared dreams.
London, with its double-decker buses and ancient bridges, came first. It was in our textbook, so naturally, we leaned in. But what began as a reading passage turned into something more: a journey. We watched videos of the London Underground, the bustling markets, the solemn guards at Buckingham Palace. My students laughed at British slang, tried mimicking accents, and asked curious questions about afternoon tea and rainy weather.
Then came Taiwan, my second home. I told them about the night markets, the smell of bubble tea, the kindness of strangers, and the MRT gliding quietly through Taipei. Taiwan felt closer, more intimate. The videos we watched weren't just travel vlogs; they were pieces of my life that I wanted to share. And they welcomed them, warmly.
One day, I showed them the railway maps of London and Taipei—so colorful, so complex, so overwhelming. Lines crisscrossed like tangled threads. My students squinted at the screen, following the maze of colors, before sighing in unison: "I think I'm going to get lost."
I laughed. “Oh, I got lost a lot in Taipei Main Station,” I admitted. “It took me around six months to finally be able to navigate the transportation system on my own.”
They looked surprised but also, relieved. Maybe getting lost wasn’t a failure. Maybe it was part of becoming brave.
What started as curiosity has quietly grown into belief. Not just mine but ours. Now we say it with a soft kind of certainty: One day, they’ll go. Maybe to London. Maybe to Taiwan. At least to these two.
Motivation is a quiet seed. You water it not just with lessons, but with images, hopes, and stories. With a glimpse of the world not as something distant, but something waiting.
My students may not have passports yet. But they have dreams that know their destinations.
And in this little classroom, that’s where it all begins.
What sparked your love for languages or travel? Do you remember the first place that made you want to go beyond borders? I’d love to hear your story. Let’s keep this window open together.

Artículos indefinidos en Inglés: "a" y "an"
Regla Principal:
"a" se usa antes de palabras que comienzan con un sonido consonante.
"an" se usa antes de palabras que comienzan con un sonido vocal.
Importante:
Lo relevante aquí es el sonido y no necesariamente la letra con la que empieza la palabra.
Ejemplos:
"a":
a cat (un gato)
a dog (un perro)
a university (una universidad) — Aunque "university" comienza con una 'u', el sonido inicial es /ju:/, que es un sonido consonante.
"an":
an apple (una manzana)
an elephant (un elefante)

In this episode of The Catholic Bookworm, Kiki Latimer interviews Emily Hicks on her article "Teaching Language Skills to International Students in Catholic Seminaries and the Critical Component of Culture" (November 15, 2023) The Seminary Journal is a journal of opinion, research, and praxis in the field of seminary education and formation for priesthood within the Roman Catholic tradition. In the Spring of 2021, the faculty of the School of Theology at St. Mary’s Seminary & University in Roland Park, Baltimore decided to embark on a common faculty writing project in collaboration with Seminary Journal. The project was coordinated by Fr. Dennis Billy, C.Ss.R. The purpose of this effort on the part of the faculty was to encourage its members in light of the new Ratio Fundamentalis from Rome (2016) and the sixth edition of the Program for Priestly Formation (approved 2019) to delve more deeply into the various academic disciplines offered at the seminary, with an eye to how those disciplines should be taught in a Catholic seminary. It was also hoped that such a project would encourage closer collaboration among the faculty, with the hope of seeing how those disciplines relate to one another and how classroom pedagogy has an impact on the con-tent being both conveyed and received. Another hope was to offer the wider seminary community in the United States and beyond insights into how classroom pedagogy might impact the integration of the various dimensions of priestly formation. Agree??? Read caption..😊🙏❤️🌹 When i was a teen, i used to be so scared of teachers out of my respect for them. That was the decorum instilled in us by our parents. But kids, nowadays i observe, are so sceptical about the teaching methods. They try dictating pedagogy and ambush the teacher's goodwill to teach. On the other hand, there are kids, who give up anything to learn from good teachers. Why is this stark difference in conduct? Who is responsible to the cause and effect of this crisis in the process of learning? How would kids survive without teachers and their values in future? Kindly leave a comment below.❤️🥰 #teacher #teaching #teachingenglish #satexam #student #studentlife (at Chennai, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChEOeUTpjkX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Episode 288: Fr. Thomas Kagumisa on his book Translanguaging: Teaching English to Secondary School Students in Tanzania (November 9, 2023) This book is a synthesis of Tanzanian educators’ core beliefs and perspectives on the effectiveness of translanguaging strategies in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to secondary school students. While the existing literature informs and addresses the topic of translanguaging in a general way, the present study does so with a particular focus on the Tanzanian educational context. The data collected from select participants through an online survey confirmed that translanguaging strategies facilitate lesson comprehension, active engagement, satisfaction, and less stress during the lesson. Conversely, adherence to the English Only Policy (EOP) acts as a barrier toward lesson comprehension, causes tension and a stressful atmosphere, and creates fear and lack of confidence, especially among students with little background in literacy. As a solution, the author recommends adapting specific translanguaging techniques such as the use of insertional and alternating methods, creating opportunities for professional development of English educators, and prioritizing instructional strategies that sustain students’ cultural identities.
