"Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), the Sunshine Stateâs largest power utility, employs all the people you might expect: electricians, lineworkers, mechanical engineers â and a few you might not. For over 40 years, the company has kept a team of wildlife biologists on staff. Their task? Monitoring the giant carnivorous reptiles that reside in one of the stateâs nuclear power plants.Â
Saving the American Crocodile
What sounds like a low-budget creature feature is actually a wildly successful conservation story. It goes like this: In 1975, the shy and reclusive American crocodile was facing extinction. Over-hunting and habitat decline caused by encroaching development had pushed its numbers to a record low. By 1975, when it was listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, there were only 200 to 300 left.Â
Three years later, in 1978, workers at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant in Homestead, Florida happened upon something that must have made them gasp: a crocodile nest along one of the plantâs 5,900-acre âcooling canals.â Rather than drive the crocs away â perhaps the easiest solution â FPL hired a team of biologists and implemented a Crocodile Management Plan. Its goal was unconventional: provide a suitable habitat for the crocs within the workings of the nuclear power plant, allowing both to coexist. Â
Over the course of the next 30 years, FPLâs wildlife biologists monitored nests, tagged hatchlings and generally created a hospitable environment for the reptiles. As it turned out, the plantâs cooling canals provided an ideal habitat: drained earth that never floods on which to lay eggs directly adjacent to water. Over the years, more and more crocs made the cooling canals home. By 1985, the nests at Turkey Point were responsible for 10 percent of American crocodile hatchlings in South Florida. In 2007, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service downgraded the American crocodileâs status from endangered to threatened, singling out FPL for its efforts.Â
The program continues to this day. To date, biologists have tagged some 7,000 babies born at the plant. In 2021, there were a record-setting 565 crocodile hatchlings at the Turkey Point facility.Â
"Reconciliation Ecology"
Turkey Pointâs efforts are an example of what is known in the conservation world as âreconciliation ecology.â Rather than create separate areas where nature or animals can thrive in isolation from humans, reconciliation ecology suggests that we can blend the rich natural world with the world of human activity. Michael Rosenzweig, an emeritus professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona, was a leading force in establishing this concept. The author of Win-Win Ecology: How the Earthâs Species can Survive in the Midst of Human Enterprise, Rosenzweig has pointed out that although human encroachment has typically been considered a threat to biodiversity, the notion that the world must be either âholyâ or âprofane,â ecologically speaking, is simply not true. Â
âIn addition to its primary value as a conservation tool, reconciliation ecology offers a valuable social byproduct,â writes Rosenzweig in his first chapter. âIt promises to reduce the endless bickering and legal wrangling that characterize environmental issues today.â

Dr. Madhusudan Katti, an associate professor in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University, was inspired by Rosenzweig when he did his postdoc at Arizona State. Katti has now been in the field of reconciliation ecology for two decades and teaches classes on the subject. âTo me itâs finding solutions to reconciling human development with biodiversity conservation,â Katti says.
This common ground between development and conservation can be consciously planned, like FPL managing a crocodile habitat at a nuclear power plant or the state-sponsored vertical gardens and commercial farms on high-rise buildings in Singapore. Other examples include the restoration of the coral reef around an undersea restaurant in Eilat, Israel, or recent legislation in New York City requiring patterned glass on high-rise buildings, making windows more visible to migratory birds. Other planned examples of reconciliation ecology can be more individually scaled: a rooftop garden in an urban setting, modifying your garden to earn a âbackyard bird habitatâ certification from the Audubon Society, or even just mowing your lawn less often...
Reconciliation Ecology: Nature's Already Doing It Without Us
But there are countless examples of âaccidentalâ incidents of reconciliation ecology, as well. One of Kattiâs favorites is the kit fox of Californiaâs San Joaquin Valley. âThe kit fox was one of the very first species listed on the Endangered Species Act,â Katti says. Its decline was caused by habitat loss through agricultural and industrial development, as well as the extermination of the gray wolf population, which led to an increase in coyotes. So kit foxes adapted and moved to new habitats. One of these was the city of Bakersfield, California.
âBakersfield, surrounded by oil pumps, would be the last place youâd expect to find an endangered species,â Katti says. But researchers think kit foxes have migrated to Bakersfield because they actually have more protection there from predators like coyotes and bobcats. âThe kit foxes have figured out that if they can tolerate the human disturbance and live with people, then they are safer from all these other predators,â he says.Â
Living in the city has led to some interesting behavioral changes. In the wild, for instance, a female kit fox gives birth to her young and raises them by herself in a den. But in the city, researchers have observed multiple females raising their litters together in the same den. âItâs like a form of cooperative breeding,â Katti says. âThat wouldnât happen in the wild.â ...
The Big Picture: How We Think about Conservation
Reconciliation Ecology isnât just we humans welcoming animals like crocodiles and foxes into our environments, though. Itâs also living with nature in a way that most Western societies havenât done since the Enlightenment. âIn recent years, thereâs been a recognition that the âfortress conservationâ model â keeping nature separated from humans and not thinking of or valuing human-inhabited landscapes â those ideas are outdated,â says Katti.
In fact, in Kattiâs classes on reconciliation ecology, he embraces the notion of reconnecting people with their land if they have been unjustly separated from it. âThe term reconciliation also applies to all the colonial legacies where both nature and people have been harmed,â Katti says. âFor Indigenous communities, the harm done to ecosystems, itâs happened together. So you can talk about addressing both. Thatâs where a lot of my thinking is at the moment.âÂ
A hopeful version of this sort of reconciliation is happening in California where colleagues of Kattiâs who are tribal members are re-introducing âtribal burnsâ in some areas. Controlled burns have been a part of many Indigenous cultures for millenia, both as a way to prevent devastating forest fires, but also to encourage the growth of certain plants like hazel that are used for basket-weaving and other crafts.Â
âThe notion that people donât belong there and âlet nature take care of itselfâ doesnât really work,â Katti says. âThatâs the legacy of Western European Enlightenment thinking â a divide between human and nature. That is a real faulty view of nature. People have been part of the ecosystem forever.â

Ironically the most replies I ever had on Imgur.
OK look here's the skinny on why I don't like GIMP: A long discussion with screenshots
To start with, there's two classes of users:
A: People who never use art apps, don't make art, and maybe tweak a couple of photos for colour balance every couple of years: They love GIMP. They hardly use it or never use it but it's FREE and OPEN SOURCE and they heard Adobe was BAD SOMEHOW because they CHARGE MONEY. They love GIMP. They will die on that hill. GIMP is the best. One day they may even use it.
B: People who are enthusiasts and professionals who actually want to make something and have graphics tablets, strong opinions on CMYK and whether Kyle Webster is over-rated or not. And they don't use GIMP because they tried it and it doesn't do the job.
To go for a comic analogy It's like bystanders telling EMTs their technique is wrong because they saw this Spongebob episode where he used bandaid.
Anyway: Who the hell amI? I feel like I should establish some Bona Fides: not just some random shouty dude. I started out with MS Paint in 1989, then Deluxe Paint Enhanced for PC. I started doing Desktop Publishing with CorelDraw and some non WYSIWYG layout engines. Spent a miserable few years with Quark, moved on to Photoshop... 3 I think. Jettisoned that after it got too bloated (It has a 3D print system inside it!!) In amongst I've tried GIMP, Krita, Clip Studio (Now and back when it was Manga Studio and really didn't want you to use colour), ProCreate, Adobe Fresco, ArtRage, Kai's powertools, 3D Studio (Back before it was Max), Maya, Blender, Inkscape, Serif Studios, Art Studio Pro... I was a graphic designer for several companies, self employed, and worked for Anthrocon doing colour on their badges for around 15 years, as well as creating designs for thier printed work and occasionally keycards, and t-shirts, and designs for badges when they didn't have any art from a GoH. To put it simply I'm not an Adobe Fanboy screeching about people using non-Adobe software. I've seen people who wanted to move to digital give up after buying hundreds of dollars of hardware because they got told GIMP was TEH GOODEST. Anyway...
But every time someone wants to get into art to paint the picture they have inside them, or do some fanart or mess with graphics design, group A crawl out from their bog of incompetence and demand that people use GIMP. Not just suggest it, but actively shout down group B, the people who have experience.
Because Group A would rather push their dogma that paid software is always the wrong solution, than accept that GIMP's frankly shit.
It's just hit version 3.0 after only 30 years. Go team.
Points to note: If you need support for GIMP, the answer is always "Runs OK for me LOL" or "I don't use it but all your problems are because you used Photoshop once." or the good old "Switch to Linux."
In the interest of fairness I'm going to install this new amazing version of GIMP and see if it's any better.
Infamously, the software is so awful that almost all images on Google that you find are pictures of people re-creating the GIMP Logo in GIMP to prove that it is on a par with MS Paint. And it's not a good logo.
First boot:
OK so it opens up a giant panel that tells me I installed GIMP. Presumably a warning. You can't access the actual app unless you've first navigated the splash screen. The app assumes your'e still on an 800x600 monitor. Nice. I suspect the splash screen was supposed to laod over the top of GIMP because... uh... ANYWAY.
Select create Select Make a new image Select a size... hit OK and voila.
Just as a note: Other apps do this in a single panel, or just open the app and let you hit File > new > Select size and bit depth & colour space... which GIMP also skipped.
OK so I'm using a mouse. so let's do a test line then find and turn on the stroke smoothing. Wow!
... This is worthless! Looks like the smoothing amount doens't do anyting, you have to tweak the other option on a scale of 0 to 1000.
For those of you playing at home: That makes no sense, because everything else is 0-100.
Also brave choice to make sure that when you pull up the settings they replace the brush palette... on the opposite side of the screen, and give you no way to switch back.
The setting which are incidentally locked, making them... double worthless.
Fun trivia! If you mis click at the bottom of the brush palette, on the left, it just deletes your tool preset! Genius. Sticking a button for a process you'd almost never do, next to the Undo/redo icons. Chef's kiss. Perfect UI design.
I hear they're making a car. The 'explode fuel tank' button is next to the switch that turns the headlights on. You may ask why they have an 'explode fuel tank' button. Yes. You may ask.
Now having created a text label, I somehow am not allowed to draw outside the text label. This is not normal.
There is no Unselect option at all in the selection menu. Escape does't do it. Hitting option/alt pops up a messages saying there's no selection to remove:
... despite there being a selection to remove.
GIMP's infamously mazelike right click menu that copies the taskbar menu is still around:
Why have one set of menus when you can have two of every menu?

Back to drawing...
Apparently the solution is to create a new layer. One text object is still text, the other randomly rasterised itself and locked the selections to it's own boundary box. That is sub-optional or "entirely stupid, who wrote this garbage?" if you're being formal.
These guys. That's who.
Still got a maze of options including 'Y not use PYTHON to make a picâ˝"
At this point I notice that the vibrant red I pick in the colour picker is showing as desaturated orange in the screenshots. Which is weird because it's supposed to be 8 bit sRGB, aka the basics. But somehow this has been fucked up - GIMP: "Colour accuracy? But Why?"
Let's try an export. a mere four or five clicks later...
... where the hell is it? Let me try that again...
OK. Uh. Great. A third visibly different shade of red to the one I drew with.
At this point, I'm done. I could learn to use the tools easily. I could dig through the manual and look for whatever ass backward UI decision lets you resolve it's inherent flaws like rasterising text at random...
... but if I tell it to use 100% red and it insists on using some buggy kludged system that outputs it to a different shade, then why bother? Nothing you do will come out looking the way you intended.
Meanwhile Clip Studio's over here doing 100% of everything you need for amateur or enthusiast or even pro level art (I created one of Anthrocon's T-shirts in Clip Studio), and it'll run on a tablet and let you draw on $400 of hardware or a desktop and a graphics tablet.

Wait could you explain what you mean by the fia examining Ferrariâs wings before the season started? Is that good for us because weâve already passed it or is that very bad because thereâs something already suspicious? flexi wings:
active TD from Spain onwards
mcl is expected to be ahead
because already last year they were the most "flexible"
they were preparing for fia to ban it
and they were also finding ways to "hide it"
so they are ahead of everyone else
because then fia didn't ban it
and everyone including ferrari and rbr scrambled to make flexi front wing
and now they will be banning it and teams are scrambling to find solutions
while mcl already expected this last year so they are ahead
also rob marshall who came from rbr specialises in finding the grey areas like this
the reduction in flexing is one THIRD which is a whole lot so it is a big aerodynamical change
TLDR: mcl will be hit the least, rbr the most, other suffering teams will be those with narrow set up window
mini DRS:
once again mcl is way ahead in this and if anyone still believes it appeared "on accident" last year and they weren't even aware it could happen, please i beg you to think again (no advantage in f1 is ever accidental)
for ferrari there were rumours of them using the mclaren trick from last year and perfecting it EVEN BEFORE testing
during the filming day in maranello / the car shakedown, they had a special camera mounted at the car pointing at the the side of the rear wing to closely monitor it
someone already had time to alert the fia about it so they came to maranello to make checks of the rear wing
ferrari was prepared for that tho (hence the camera that was added to see what exactly happens during the cars drive in that area)
(cannot really find a clear pic for this but) if you noticed, ferrari had many more of the little "blue dot stickers" on the rear wing - which are a way to measure the flexing of different parts of the rear wing
fia found no rules exceptions during their checks in maranello
TLDR: Ferrari used the grey area mcl was abusing last year in a little different way and prepared well for it
