The Philosophy of Distance
Distance, in philosophy, is not only a physical measurement but also a profound existential, aesthetic, epistemological, and ethical concept. To speak of distance is to speak of separation and relation, of the space between things—whether spatial, emotional, conceptual, or symbolic.
This philosophy asks:
What does it mean to be distant from something?
How does distance affect how we know, value, or experience the world?
Key Dimensions of the Philosophy of Distance
1. Epistemological Distance
Distance in knowing: We are always at a "remove" from the object of thought or perception.
Immanuel Kant explored how we never perceive "things-in-themselves" (noumena), but only phenomena—what appears to us through space and time.
Distance here implies that our knowledge is always mediated by frameworks, perspectives, and limitations.
2. Aesthetic Distance
In aesthetics, distance allows for reflection and appreciation without becoming overwhelmed.
The concept of “aesthetic distance” is the space between the viewer and the art—necessary for engaging with a work without mistaking it for reality.
Tragedy and horror, for example, are enjoyable in part because we are distant from the actual suffering.
3. Existential and Emotional Distance
Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre viewed distance as a condition of human alienation: even in relationships, we are never fully united with the other.
Emotional distance is both a barrier to intimacy and sometimes a defense mechanism or source of freedom.
4. Moral and Ethical Distance
Moral philosophers ask: What responsibilities do we have to distant others?
Peter Singer argues that physical or emotional distance shouldn't diminish moral obligation, especially in globalized societies.
5. Technological Distance
Technology collapses physical distances, but may increase psychological or existential distances (e.g., online disconnection, simulation).
Virtual proximity can mask emotional or ethical detachment.
Why It Matters
In ethics: It challenges who we care for and why.
In aesthetics: It defines the boundary between art and life.
In metaphysics: It reveals how space and time shape being.
In politics: It raises questions about empathy, governance, and global responsibility.
Distance isn't just a gap—it's a lens, a frame, a condition for meaning. It can alienate or protect, illuminate or obscure. The philosophy of distance explores these tensions at the heart of human experience.

Its crazy how not only did no one know i was autistic for a long time, i definitely didnt realize my mother was. when I told her I was, she went 'you know, I think i might be too!'. Meanwhile all my friends who met my mother were like 'hey your mum is autistic af'
Anyway I see it now esp bc she texts me with no awareness of how one typically separates or approaches topics, which is to say she sent this today,
Tumblr media
I guess it slipped her mind to remind me yesterday!!
This post might be more a long lead in to say 'wow my papa's been dead for 20 years jfc'. And you know what? He was autistic af too. My dad's favourite movie was The Producers, because his favourite Broadway show was the Producers. He loved it so much, and would always make us watch his favourite things with that promise: YOU'LL LOVE IT!
Now. The Producers is not a movie appropriate for young children, at the very least because it is difficult to understand satire (heavily nazi based) as a young child. I saw it many times. He went to the Broadway show multiple times over the years and took my sister at least once, around age... 11? I don't think at any point he was concerned it was too mature or difficult, he just really, really loved it and wanted more than anything to share that
It's a trait i recognize so much in myself. When I love something or somewhere, I want to introduce it to everyone I like, so they can like it too.
I was newly 8 when he died, and he was ill a long while before then. Much of my memory is missing or reconstructed. I'm not grieving him still, I'm always still sad for the potential of what might have been. And I'm melancholy enough to post about it a little. Thanks x

Playing with Tim's preboot schooling timeline again:
7th Grade (12): Tim is at an unnamed boarding school. By my own timeline Jason dies in April close to the end of this school year.
(Tim turns 13 and Jason turns 15 over the summer. Fight me on Jason dying at 14 and 9 months, it's the best way to make his listed death date of 27 April work with the rest of the timeline and known birth dates)
8th Grade (13): Tim starts the year at an unnamed boarding school, becomes Robin. At some point after Haiti he is transferred to a local public school for the remainder of the year, while Jack is in hospital.
Note: this ‘year’ covers 1988-1992 in comics, and a good chunk of it is buried in ‘Bruce mourning Jason’ and ‘time Tim spends training’.
9th Grade (14): Tim starts at Gotham Heights High School, which is on the mainland near Bristol not Gotham proper, prior to Robin II. Tim remains at Gotham Heights High for the school year, until early No Man's Land where Jack looks at having Tim study from home in Keystone until they settle in.
Tim then spends the summer holidays and up to Christmas in No Man's Land, turning 15 there.
10th Grade (15): Tim is enrolled at Brentwood Academy from January to close to the end of the school year.
Tim has to take a 10th grade equivalency test over the summer in Robin #107 to prove he's at an educational standard to be enrolled in 11th grade after the holidays. Following this Tim turns 16 over the summer and has moved to live in Gotham proper.
Notes: the real reason Tim probably had to take this test is due to his schooling disruption from No Man's Land, unless Brentwood is not considered to be an accredited school.
11th Grade (16): Tim starts the year at Louis E. Grieve Memorial High School, but within a month War Games happens and he subsequently moves to Bludhaven, where he enrols at John Wayne High School for a couple of days before dropping out completely. Tim spends the rest of this school year living in Bludhaven and then on the world trip with Dick & Bruce.
Tim turns 17.
12th Grade (17): Tim is enrolled in Gotham City High School by Bruce on their return to Gotham. Tim completes part of the school year there, but drops out before graduation.
Noted oddity: Prior to Tim dropping out in the last few issues of Robin, Steph is also at Gotham City High, despite traditionally being considered a year ahead of him, and Steph starting at Gotham University in Reborn.
Way to resolve this: Steph spent at least 6 months studying from home during her pregnancy AND at least 18 months in Africa at Leslie's Aid camp. When she got back to Gotham Crystal enrolled her back in high school while Steph completed applications for university and had whatever schooling she received while in Africa transferred. Steph started at Gotham University as a mid-year entry given the disruption in her education.
Alternately, Tim 'dropping out of school' was him missing the last few weeks of 12th Grade and not officially graduating as he took off to look for Bruce. Steph then proceeded to start university a year 'late' at the start of the academic year in Batgirl 2009. However, this explanation would place Tim at 18 years of age for Red Robin, while we know he was still 17 as of Red Robin #12.

Okay SO i was thinking about the dwemer (always a fun ride) and i was once again wondering what exactly the "fifteen-and-one" (as stated exactly once in the official translation of calcelmos stone) could mean... at first i thought maybe it was something akin to the eight-and-one divines, but the word "avatheled" is what the original dwemeris is. So what if it wasnt anything crazy special and it was just their word for 16? Like, what if the dwemer just had a base-15 number system and so their word for 16 just translates literally to fifteen-and-one.

The Red Planet MARS 🔴|| Reddish Colour Surface|| The Brightest Object in Earth's Sky
Want to Watch the video of The Red Planet MARS 🔴
Go to my youtube channel @InfinityASTRONOMERICA
It's a New Youtube Channel so, Please Subscribe my channel.
About the Video:
Mars is the fourth planet and the furthest terrestrial planet from the Sun. The reddish color of its surface is due to finely grained iron(III) oxide dust in the soil, giving it the nickname "the Red Planet". Mars's radius is second smallest among the planets in the Solar System at 3,389.5 km (2,106 mi). The Martian dichotomy is visible on the surface: on average, the terrain on Mars's northern hemisphere is flatter and lower than its southern hemisphere. Mars has a thin atmosphere made primarily of carbon dioxide and two irregularly shaped natural satellites: Phobos and Deimos.

this is not true. rendering an image using genAI uses about as much energy as leaving an LED bulb on for half an hour. the powershell script bit is more of an ask, but it is probably equivalent to the energy of boiling water for one pot of coffee. a "conversation" of 100 text exchanges is, similarly, about as much as boiling water for one pot of coffee. this is based on carbon dioxide emission equivalents as estimated by tomlinson et al. (2024).
the things exerting unnecessary pressure on infrastructure are x, meta, google, & msoft insisting that nearly every web search & post & document & whatever be processed through an LLM.
we can argue about whether anyone in the imperial core is morally justified in boiling an extra quart of water per day when people are starving, but this exaggeration is easily disproven & casts individual action as The Problem, which is simply not true.

and since I'm talking about puters and data safety "when pirating use a VPN and these extensions and blah blah blah-" yeah that's a good start, but your first step should be using a virtual machine, it's better to fuck up a virtual computer by downloading random files, than to mess up your actual pc/laptop just because you think nordvpn has all your bases covered or some shit firefox alone will not protect you from hot singles in your area
