The Rise of Temperature-Controlled Logistics in West Africa
By EUGENIA EYRAM OPEKU
Temperature-sensitive cargo has never been more in demand—or more vulnerable.
Whether it’s vaccines requiring stable cold chains or perishable foods traveling across borders, the logistics of keeping cargo within a specific temperature range has quietly become one of the most critical concerns in West Africa’s supply chain evolution. Yet, it’s still a topic often overlooked in public discussions. Maybe it’s because it feels too technical or niche. Or perhaps because many assume it's only a priority for pharmaceutical giants or massive food distributors.
But the reality is different.
Across Ghana and neighboring countries, temperature-controlled logistics—also known as cold chain logistics—is not just rising. It’s reshaping how we think about reliability, public health, and regional trade potential. There’s a whole ecosystem growing around it, quietly but steadily.
Let me paint a picture.
A small-scale strawberry farmer in the Eastern Region of Ghana has managed to cultivate a high-quality crop. The challenge isn’t the growing. It’s the journey—keeping the strawberries cool enough so they don’t perish before reaching markets in Accra or beyond. Without temperature-controlled trucks, his products are unlikely to survive the journey intact. The result? Lost income. Wasted food. And a missed opportunity for trade growth.
Now multiply that scenario across hundreds of small-scale producers across the region. The opportunity cost is enormous.
That’s where temperature-controlled logistics steps in. It’s not just about adding a cooling unit to a truck. It's a system—integrated, monitored, and adapted to local realities. At PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, we’ve had to learn that lesson through practical experience. We once handled a shipment of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals bound for a health facility in Tamale. The challenge wasn’t just keeping the cargo cold. It was managing unpredictable road conditions, intermittent power at storage points, and real-time tracking to ensure nothing went wrong.
Things almost did go wrong. We encountered unexpected delays at a checkpoint, and there was a brief moment where internal container temperature spiked. Our team had contingency protocols in place—extra insulation, backup cooling units, and constant remote monitoring. The cargo arrived safely. But it could have gone another way if not for that attention to detail.
That’s the reality of cold chain logistics in our region—it’s a game of anticipation.
But here’s the exciting part. As demand grows, so does innovation. We're seeing investments in solar-powered cold rooms for rural areas. Data loggers that alert handlers via mobile apps if temperatures go off-range. And perhaps most importantly, more awareness from clients themselves who are beginning to ask the right questions about how their goods are handled.
Now, why does this matter at a macro level?
Well, West Africa is poised to play a more significant role in global trade. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is gaining momentum, and with it, the need for more reliable, scalable logistics infrastructure. If we want to export more food, medicine, or even cosmetics—temperature stability becomes non-negotiable.
And Ghana, I believe, is well-positioned to lead in this area.
As the author and someone deeply engaged in this space, I also want to share something we’re proud of. My company, PORTLINK GHANA LIMITED, has been nominated for the 2025 Go Global Awards, hosted by the International Trade Council. The event will be held in London this coming 18th–19th November. It’s not just an awards ceremony—it’s more of a convergence. A space where the best minds in global business meet. A space to share insights, form partnerships, and figure out how we all adapt in this rapidly shifting world.
Being part of that dialogue means something. It tells us that what we’re doing here in Ghana—whether it’s optimizing cold chains or finding creative solutions to regional challenges—is gaining recognition. And that gives me hope.
Because cold chain development isn’t only a technical goal. It’s a human one. It’s about ensuring children get safe vaccines. That food arrives fresh. That small producers don’t lose out because of preventable spoilage. It’s also about trust—because no one wants to do business with a supply chain that lets products rot in transit.
There’s still a long way to go. Infrastructure gaps, erratic electricity supply, and high equipment costs all pose real obstacles. But step by step, company by company, West Africa is moving forward.
Maybe the best part is that we don’t have to solve it all at once. Sometimes, it’s enough to solve one piece well—like a single shipment, delivered safely, against all odds.
That’s how change begins.

To overcome such problems organizations have increased their spending on technologies such as smart refrigerator systems and cloud computing solutions which increased the demand for the monitoring components market.
The increasing need for enhanced connectivity and emergence of IoT solutions is anticipated to further increase the IT spending on cold chain. An organization implementing IT solutions is mandated to adhere to the IT security guidelines of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and other regulations framed by government organizations including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, WHO, and the EU regulation for food and drug safety. The growing installation of sensors and smart connected devices in refrigerated containers provides real-time information. The key vendors of the market include Accenture PLC (U.S.), AT&T, Inc. (U.S.), Cisco Systems, Inc. (U.S.), and Oracle Corporation (U.S.).
Government across regions are taking initiatives to attract the investment in cold chain infrastructure. For instance, the Indian Ministry of food processing industries implemented central sector scheme of cold chain. The scheme provides financial assistance for setting up the integrated cold chain infrastructure to avoid post-harvest losses.
The adoption telematics system would help the companies to reduce the fuel expenses and number of empty of runs. Increasing government investments in intelligent transportation system and implementing telematics regulations to enable smart traffic management is anticipated to spur the telematics application in fleet management.
North American region is showing highest penetration growth in the cold chain market owing to the prevailing large consumer based and increasing penetration of connected devices are the major factors driving the North American regional market. The industry players are likely to target the emerging economies such as India, Brazil owing to the government initiatives such as digital India, introduction of GST.
